Website Changes are Here! At long last, your Chapter website has gone through some changes. If you attempt to login and are unsuccessful, please click “Forgot Your Password?” link on the right hand side of the http://www. naswaz.com homepage. You will then be sent a password reset link by email which will allow you to log in. You will find that our Chapter Events section includes a “Community Calendar.” Indeed, January, February and March will be very busy months. In addition to our Social Work Month activities in March, we also have monthly networking events occurring in every branch, continuing education workshops in early and late-February, social work cinema events and other lunch and learn opportunities. Please explore the “Community Calendar” for opportunities to connect with social workers near you! Social Work Day at the Legislature: 2/19 & 2/27 This year’s legislative session started with an announcement by the Governor of her plans regarding Child Protective Services. It is as important as ever that social workers pay close attention to developments at our Capitol. NASWAZ Branch 1 will discuss public policy at a lunch and learn on Friday, January 31st

in Phoenix at the Fillmore Commons. In addition, NASWAZ has scheduled two dates for Social Work Day at the Legislature: February 19th and February 27th. Social work professionals and students (current and future NASWAZ members) are welcome to attend! Register online for these events and more at http:// www.naswaz.com. Space is limited! New Request to Speak System at the Arizona Capitol Perhaps you have attended Social Work Day at the Legislature or an advocacy event at the Arizona Capitol in Phoenix in the past. It is likely that you registered at one of the kiosks in the House or the Senate so you could take advantage of the electronic “Request to Speak.” Just prior to the legislative session this year, the Capitol replaced the old “Request to Speak” system with a new system. They did not, however, transfer all names over to the new system. If you want to weigh in on bills from the convenience of your home, please consider visiting the Capitol on your own or at one of the Social Work Day at the Legislature events scheduled for February 19th or February 27th. For more information about the “Request to Speak” system changes, go to: http://azleg.gov/rts/ rts.asp

The President’s Pen By Suzanne M. Schunk, LCSW NASWAZ Chapter President

2014: New Hopes and New Challenges A happy and healthy 2014 to all of you; it already promises to bring many challenges to us as social workers. Just a few significant issues: Nationally, NASW struggles as the organization membership continues to fall and many ideas are being proposed for streamlining or combining aspects of Chapters to make NASW more efficient. Our AZ Board of Directors and executive director (ED) are concerned and working to ensure that our issues and unique qualities are preserved as we move forward. It is our hope that the final outcome will be healthy for both National and for our Chapter. Here in our state, the Legislature is starting and Child Protective Services is a very large concern with many bills, ideas, and issues already being discussed. Our Public Policy Committee has identified CPS as a major priority and will keep all of you informed, as we shall need your advocacy; members of the NASWAZ Board of Directors and the ED are also weighing in on the issues. Just last month, NASWAZ had an article published in the AZ Republic about the positive outcomes associated with CPS staff having BSW or MSW degrees (see NASWAZ website) and a copy of that, as well as the research, were provided to the Legislature and the Governor. Given all the crises and media coverage, 2014 appears to be the best opportunity to truly 4

impact the future of CPS that the state has ever had. NASWAZ had input into and supports the recommendations of the professional child welfare community as synthesized by Children’s Action Alliance which can be found at http://azchildren.org/cps-forum-transcriptand-recommendations. It is our hope that all of this work will lead to far better safety and permanency outcomes for AZ children. NASWAZ will also be active on other legislative issues including the implementation of the Medicaid (AHCCCS) expansion, reinstatement of safety net human services funding, immigration, etc. In addition, as you know, this is an election year, and we already know that we must help to support the ballot proposition to overturn the implementation of HB 2305, as it makes sweeping and negative changes to AZ elections law. It is our hope that this ballot initiative will pass and protect voter access and rights. Lastly, I am excited to celebrate with all of you the selection of our very own NASWAZ member Adrienne Decker-Delgado as the National NASW Social Worker of the Year for 2013! Her work to develop and implement a free, user-friendly website to assist Maricopa County professionals and the community in finding appropriate resources was revolutionary and it is our hope that this website can become a state-wide resource. If you have not seen it, go to http://www. findhelpphx.org.

Coalition Spotlight: Arizona Coalition to End Sexual & Domestic Violence

Over the last several years, there have been many discussions between the Arizona Coalition Against Domestic Violence (AzCADV) and the sexual assault community about the possibility of creating a single statewide coalition that addresses both domestic violence and sexual assault. After exhaustive discussions with the Arizona sexual violence community, state agencies, the creation of an internal committee to work toward a transition, the support and much needed technical assistance of RSP and OVW, and honest and direct conversations with the sexual assault coalition, we received official recognition as the 24th state wide dual-issue coalition from the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and the Department of Justice, Office on Violence Against Women in August! In November 2013, we invited all of our members, those of who have been with us as domestic violence providers, those providing services to victims of both domestic and sexual violence, as well as those who are new to the coalition as sole service providers to victims of sexual assault, to work with us as we transition from the Arizona Coalition Against Domestic Violence to a new statewide coalition that is working to end violence against women, men and children in our state. This community meeting focused on conversations to change our name, mission and vision statement as well as expand our strategic objectives for the coming two years. New Name: The Arizona Coalition to End Sexual and Domestic Violence New Mission: To lead, to advocate, to educate, to collaborate, to prevent and end sexual and domestic violence in Arizona. New Vision: We envision a world in which all individuals are safe and communities champion respect and quality. We are thrilled to officially start working on these issues together as we have always felt that they are so closely interconnected.

ASU Social Work PhD Scholar’s Club Advocacy Handbook The Arizona State University's Ph.D. Social Work Scholar's Club and the Arizona Chapter of the National Association of Social Workers (NASWAZ) are proud to announce the posting of the Arizona Legislative Advocacy Handbook for Social Workers 2013-2014 edition. This advocacy manual began as an effort in 2011 when the club’s president, Marcos Martinez, returned from a national social science conference with a guidebook of professional advocacy for psychologists. The club, also comprised of Vice President Elisa Kawam and Secretary Chris Fike, quickly realized that such a manual did not exist for the state of Arizona and set out to produce one. The manual specifically was intended to provide a detailed reference of Arizona’s political landscape for social work professionals and students alike. In collaboration with NASW-AZ, the manual was finalized in mid 2013 and includes (1) a description of the importance of advocacy; (2) how the Arizona legislative process operates; (3) how to improve policy at the state and national level, and (4) helpful advocacy resources. The Social Work Scholar's Club and NASW-AZ hope that readers will use the manual to positively impact laws, rules, and regulations that affect programming for Arizona’s most vulnerable. A copy of the manual will be available online on the Chapter website under “Advocacy.”
