CASA RAÍZ

Inspired by the vernacular architecture of Dominican Republic and its traditional multi-generational homes, “House of Roots” is intended for loved ones to live alongside each other without lacking privacy. The design incorporates shared space for outdoor dining to promote interaction and connection to nature. Its seperate housing units allows to amplify the space for newer generations, while ensuring a sense of tranquility for older members of the family.

EDGEMERE COMMONS

With the infusion of water at the core of its inception and design, this project aims to reclaim the unique qualities possessed by the site of Jamaica Bay. Engaging the nearby gardens, farms and schools, it serves as a succession plan for the transfer of knowledge brought to the area by migrant gardeners that would be lost in time. Made for multigenerational use, to facilitate education, the celebration of cultures that make up Edgemere’s diverse fabric.

With rising sea levels the design aims to mitigate flooding. The pods go against the instict to block out the water. Instead, allowing water to run through thre site, redirecting it away from neighboring streets and homes. Meant to be impermanent, the modules’ materiality of wood and bioconcrete permits for con-habitance with marine life, ushering opportunity for residents and visitors to learn about the species that dwell in the living edge.

Serving as a salt shed and public community space in the heart of new york city, the design aims to attract the public realm in a manner that invites pedestrians to engage with the structure. Ramps interweave the floors preventing each level from becoming isolated islands. Varied flood heights provide open space and sights to the surrounding skyscrapers.
