Birla Institute of Technology, Mesra

The Institute Building of BIT Mesra

Welcome to BIT Mesra! Your first steps into the institute mark the beginning of a whole new phase of life. THEY SAY college is a place to rediscover yourself in ways you never imagined yourself to be. Leaving behind the rigors of the school and coaching days and the debacle of intensive counseling, welcome to your very first year at Birla Institute of Technology! The time has come to step into the world of yet another memorable journey that life has to offer and be a part of the legacy that this institute is. This Deemed University was established in 1955 to offer students across the nation the very best in technical education, together with facilities such as a Central Library, Central Computer Aided Design Laboratory, Central Computing Facilities (CCF) along with 21 academic departments in the various engineering, architecture, management, hotel management, pharmaceutical and other disciplines. It was the first in the country to establish a department dedicated to Space Engineer-

ing & Rocketry way back in 1964, and since then the college has only kept soaring higher. The first glimpse of the main building from amidst the trees is a scene that never fails to enthrall - whether you’re starting your first semester, or bidding adieu to your final. Being an entirely residential campus, it provides accommodation to over 3200 undergraduate and postgraduate students and 550 members of faculty and staff. The infrastructure includes research laboratories, lecture halls, workshops, sports facilities, gymnasium and a central library with over 100,000 books, journals and electronic databases. To make sure the students enjoy a comfortable and convenient life in campus, various amenities are provided such as co-operative shops, canteens, three ATM’s, coffee shops, a 100 Mbit/s LAN Connection, medical stores and a dispensary, sports complex, and a music room around various locations of this 780-acre campus. Keeping up with the times has never been enough at BIT as it has always been either at the top of ranking surveys or the first among initiators of path breaking ideas. Among many other amazing facts, BIT holds the patent for the formula of the famous Benadryl cough syrup, while some critical components of the Large Hadron Collider at CERN have been designed right here in the campus. From the introduction of new aca-

Our alumni have joined world class universities in USA, UK, Europe, Canada etc. We expect you to be exemplary achievers in whatever fields you undertake during your stay in BIT Mesra. We expect you to participate in the activities of the clubs and professional societies, which will provide an opportunity to acquire leaderships and professional skills, which cannot be obtained in a formal classroom education. You are entering the institute at a time when there is a stiff global competition all around. To succeed in this global competitive situation you should have excellent skills,

demic programmes to re-structuring the current ones, from improving infrastructure to upgrading teaching skills, the student’s welfare has always been the focal point in BIT’s larger picture. A strong and well-networked Training and Placement Division ensures ample job and internship opportunities for students of every discipline. Top placements at companies like Facebook and Microsoft in the last two years have been all over the news. At the same time, students inclined towards higher studies secure positions in some of the best ranked universities, including top IIMs for an MBA, and various Ivy League Universities for an MS. Apart from the academic hub, there are twenty one student run clubs which cater to everyone’s social, cultural as well as technical interests - from technical and cultural clubs associated with international bodies, to clubs focusing on the various forms of performing arts and culture. The two main college fests, Bitotsav and Pantheon, together with a host of other events hosted throughout the year provide a platform for every student of this institute to both technical and cultural events throughout the year. In a nutshell, be rest assured that the next few years of your life will be the ones worth remembering all through. The rest of this guide is aimed at familiarizing you with some of the most important aspects of life in this institute, from the various dos and dont’s in campus, to maps of the entire institute, from various facilities to avail during your free time to a list of events held throughout the year.

The NCC Camp in the institute aims to instil a sense of discipline in the rigorous lives of students who go on to lead their lives in the technical sphere. They are trained as supporting personnel to active soldiers, playing important roles in planning, engineering and strategy. Students attending special NCC Camps during the summer are offered scholarships to reward their dedication.

THE MUSIC ROOM, situated in a quiet corner of the sprawling campus, houses a variety of instruments including acoustic, electric, bass as well as Hawaiian guitars, a full set of drums, keyboard, tablas, harmonium, sitar, and even a bongo. Musical equipments including guitar and bass amplifiers, microphone and cables ensure proper processing and amplification of sounds produced for a wholesome experience. “Music is the most creative form of artistic impression,” said Mr. Mrinal Pathak, Professor-in-charge of the Creative Arts Department. ”Art and culture are integral parts of every person’s life, and must be molded into the necessary forms to satisfy one’s creative aspirations.” The wide range of instruments ensure that the musical aspirations are catered to for students with different tastes, both western as well as classical. The music room is available for usage 24x7, through the president of the Music Club, who needs to be given prior information about the time of usage. Welcoming words from the Dean of External Relations and Coordination, and Head of the T&P Division

The foremost success stories from the immediate preceding batches

Inspirational stories of people driven by their own entrepreneurial ambitions

THE T&P DIVISION has been actively contributing to a variety of success stories for more than five decades in this institute, meeting the needs and trends of various sectors of the industry. The preceding batches saw their own share of bright individuals which serve to inspire all forthcoming batches. The average salary saw an increase from 5.05 LPA to 6.29 LPA in the preceding year, excluding international offers. The batch of 2013 (popularly known as the 2k9 batch) saw the induction of three students, Rounak Tibrewal, Kaustubh Karkare, and Piyush Garg into Facebook, with unofficial international offer figures ranging in the previously unheard-of 8 figures. This hugely popular success story overshadowed the likes of even the famous offer figure of 56 LPA by Microsoft to two students from the 2k8 batch. Also, Vishnu Mohandas and Taha Bin Jawaid successfully grabbed offers from Direct-i, one of the most sought-after employers in the country. Apart from these, the institute also sees admissions into top IIMs among students driven towards the management sphere. Some notable names would be Ankur Bajaj (2k9 batch) and Abhinav Mishra (2k8 batch), both of whom are currently pursuing their MBAs at IIM Kolkata. The institute thus sees an impressive list of top achievers every year, with new heights being scaled every successive year.

THE INSTITUTE sees a number of people take to setting up their own paths for the future with creative ideas and an immovable drive to see them to fruition. A few of the most notable stories are listed below. • LENSKART.COM (VALYOO TECHNOLOGY) Lenskart is a leading online shopping portal which gives customers the liberty to own sun shades, spectacle frames and contact lenses for people who like to spice up their life. Lenskart offers great discounts and refreshing offers doing rounds every now and then. • VOICETREE VoiceTree Technologies is a Packaged Cloud Telephony company focusing on building simple-to-adopt and use telephony solutions for businesses. • ETHEREAL COLOURS Ethereal Colours has its origin in a deepseated passion for photographing, filming and writing about the world around us with a fresh and inquisitive approach. This literary extravaganza persuades you to let the writer and the poet in you out of the closet, while also testing your ability to speak your mind in debates and JAMs. Other offbeat events include Panchayati Raaj, Marcos, and Whatchamacallit (an event organized by NAPS). The highlight of Rostra, however, is the Youth Parliament - a Parliament simulation by the students, of the students, for the students. GENESIS

A battle of wit, brains, spontaneity and humour is what comprises Genesis. Essentially a quizzing and speaking event, it provides an interesting variety of events beyond quizzes, debates
