F L I P T H E PAG E F O R OU R E XC LUS I V E INTERVIEW WITH JEAN! NAPCP Newsletter October 2016 | 11

Jean, where and how did you start as a photographer? I was always that girl with a camera, but it was never used for art or money...just for fun and friends. But a huge appreciation for art and photography has been inside me ever since I can remember. In early 2006, we were getting ready to move to China for 5 months for my husband’s internship and he suggested we get a “real camera.” For some reason, that simple thing sparked my interest and I became obsessed with the world of photography. I lived and breathed photography for the next year and a half. I studied everything I could get my hands on, took classes, and practiced in every kind of light possible. I officially started my business late 2007.

What is one piece of advice you have for all photographers? Owning a photography business is not a one person job, as much as we all try to make it be so. Save your business, your time, and your sanity by outsourcing the things that either you aren’t good at or hate doing. Personally, I have released editing, album design, house cleaning, taxes, and packaging/shipping. Of course this means I had to adjust my pricing, but my sanity and time has magically returned to me, and I continue to love what I do.it doesn’t seem like a good fit. It’s really hard, but it saves my sanity!

What is your hope for attendees of your class, The Art of Capturing the Real, at the 2017 NAPCP Retreat? This class is for those who want to see and capture differently. We have to accept that our clients aren’t going to magically stand in perfect light, move gracefully within that light, interact with each other flawlessly, and we get to just sit back and capture it all. I am excited to share with my class the tips, tricks, and tools I use to capture emotion, motion, and “real moments” that separate a cute image from a breathtaking image. It’s obvious in your work that you are a great lover of the natural world. Is there someplace special on your bucket list that you’d love to visit? Ahhhhh, you’ve hit my soft spot...travel. My family and I traveled around the world for one year from 2014 to 2015 and hope to do it again in a few years. We travel whenever we can and photography just happens to fit in perfectly with that! I have many bucket list locations, but I have my sights set on the Faroe Islands for our next adventure.

Thank you so much Jean! NAPCP Newsletter October 2016 | 17

Three Tips F O R M I N I S E S S I O N S | BY J E A N S M I T H

1- Frequency - If you choose to offer mini sessions, hold them infrequently or only every few years. If you offer mini sessions too often or at the same time every year, clients will expect them and wait to hire you only for mini sessions. 2- Exposure - Mini sessions can be an excellent source of exposure because several people are getting sessions done by you in a short amount of time. Reward or give an incentive for people sharing their images on social media. 3- Purpose - The beauty of mini sessions is that you can cater them to exactly what you want for your business or photography future. Maybe you want to photograph only children in the future. Offer kids-only mini sessions. Maybe you want to get into children’s commercial photography and need a portfolio. Offer a styled only set of mini sessions. Maybe you want to earn money for a charity. Announce family sessions with 50100% of the profit going toward a charity. And the list goes on and on.
