It’s all about love!

Attendees of the charming and memorable 2017 NAPCP Retreat have returned home, and

we’re all settling back into business and routines. We’re tickled pink that those who attended the final NAPCP Retreat are following up and sharing ideas with one another, both in the private Facebook group for attendees and in the NAPCP Member Community! New friendships were made and old ones refreshed, business expertise and marketing campaigns shared, and the coastal California weather kept us all on our toes. It was a marvelous and purposeful experience – one we’re elated to share with you through these pages!

The thrilling moment we announced Becca Wohlwinder, of Becca Wohlwinder Photography,

as 2016 Photographer of the Year also took place in Santa Barbara! You can view the Facebook Live video of the revelation in the NAPCP Member Community. Congratulations, Becca!

Speaking of Photographer of the Year, our First Half 2017 International Image Competition is

Triple Scoop Music W I T H R OY A S H E N

You have said that music can change the soul of a video. What about your own background in music helps you communicate this to clients of TSM? Music has been a big of my life for as long as I can remember. I’m one of triplets actually and my Mom would entertain us by playing songs on her guitar and singing to us. I loved it! I started playing guitar in elementary school and went on to spend 20 years playing in bands and performing around the world, releasing albums and placing music in TV shows and Hollywood films. In a sense, you are a champion both of the music industry and your clients, passionate about communicating the importance of proper music licensing and giving talented independent artists another platform. Tell us about what these relationships mean to you. In business and in life, relationships are super important. You’ll always go far when you focus on helping other people! When we started Triple Scoop Music in 2006 we had many friends that were professional photographers who needed great, emotionally-matched music that was legal for use in their businesses and within the slideshows they would sell to clients. We also had lots of incredible musicians and Grammy winning artists as friends who were interested in finding new avenues for their music. We took the time to build something that met the needs of both groups of friends by matching easy affordable music licensing with award-winning artists - and that’s how Triple Scoop Started. Since those early days we’ve grown into the world’s leading music service for creative professionals, but we still have the same approach: If your #1 focus is helping your clients and customers and building great relationships, you’ll grow your business.

We’d love to hear one of your best boutique branding tips! I’ve actually created an online video course showcasing some incredible tips and techniques on how to supercharge your photo marketing, branding and sales. It includes examples and inside tips used by some of the industry’s leading photographers. It’s free to watch and will help you become a master at marketing your photo business using images and music! Click here to watch it now. About Roy: Roy Ashen is an award-wining musician, songwriter and the CEO and Cofounder of Triple Scoop Music, the acclaimed music licensing service for Professional Photographers and Event Filmmakers. Tucked between the mountains and the Pacific Ocean, the Canary Hotel provides Old World respite in the heart of one of Southern California’s most picturesque cities: Santa Barbara. It was here in the “American Riviera” that NAPCP members and friends came together for the 2017 NAPCP Retreat. This year’s meeting was our most intimate yet. We reached outside of child photography and communed with celebrated photographers across genres for the express purpose of acquiring knowledge and developing ourselves and our businesses. Our theme of “Enjoy the Journey” was evident across activities, classes, live shoots and mentoring. Together, we moved forward. Continue with us as we spotlight our community’s fruitful week of inspiration and enrichment.

Our days together began with a phenomenal marketing session lead by our very own Alice Park, NAPCP Co-Founder. Alice’s guided exercises were designed not only to produce revenue-generating marketing plans, but for attendees to look inward and bring life to their long term goals. Each NAPCP Retreat attendee and speaker received a personalized 2017 NAPCP Marketing Guide, designed for paramount business and personal success. For photographers who were unable to attend the Retreat and all other creatives and entrepreneurs who wish to take advantage of our tailored-toyou annual planner, the Marketing Guide is currently available for purchase in the NAPCP Store. Or, take advantage of our Introduce a Friend to NAPCP promotion by February 15th, and receive the 2017 NAPCP Marketing Guide as a gift!

SPEAKERS

Our eclectic group of Retreat speakers discussed an array of topics important to attendees. SEO expert Rob Greer blew our minds with a presentation that had photographers filling up Rob’s “free time” with added on mentoring sessions. The sounds of furious notetaking filled the room as Rob laid down the ground rules of SEO and humorously but firmly declared to us that ellipses and smileys should be banned from our professional prose … :)

Intimate breakout sessions with the Retreat speakers filled our days. Keri Meyers of Keri Meyers Photography presented on a deeper look into posed newborn photography including how to market to potential clients, how to prepare clients and build a relationship, the shooting process, posing with confidence, editing to achieve a polished and consistent style, and presenting and selling finished work to your clients. Jean Smith of Jean Smith Photography rode the momentum

of her live shoot with more tips and tricks to think like a lifestyle photographer, including how to use tools such as lighting, lenses, and interaction with the subject to create more natural looking images that are filled with real emotion. Heidi (Hope) and Shaun Guerard of Heidi Hope Photography shared the combination of marketing techniques and financial planning that has helped them transition their business plan from surviving weeks and months to years and decades. Jennifer Kapala of Jennifer Kapala Photography lead her students through a variety of exercises designed to help them get clear on their desires for 2017, and the steps to take them there.

Mandy Johnson of Mandy Johnson Photography shared strategies to identifying who one’s ideal client is, where to find them and how to gain them as a client. Then, she showed step by step how to sell (without really “selling”) while maintaining the relationship so clients remain longtime clients. Sarah Lane of Sarah Lane Studios taught on how to implement a successful program just for tweens that will make them feel incredibly special while boosting Sarah’s students as leaders in an un-tapped market!

NAPCP award winners Becca Wohlwinder and Stephanie Neal also lead everyone through an image critique session to help us prepare for the First Half International Image Competition (open now!).

Thank you to all our speakers!

SHO OTS

Our highly anticipated live shoots are always a blast, and were equally exciting this year! Just before the sky opened over Santa Barbara, our lifestyle expert, Jean Smith, shared her tips and tricks for using any location to photograph uber amazing pictures. Emma Hostetter, of The Borrowed Boutique, had the pleasure of Jean directing and photographing her darling family. Despite the rain and cooler temperature, Jennifer Kapala bravely continued with her underwater shoot as planned. Attendees got to see Jennifer in action as she captured stunning maternity portraits, and “mermaid images of one of our members. And Rya Duncklee, of Rya Duncklee Studios, demonstrated video fusion, including guiding poses and how to incorporate unique location aspects. Sarah Lane and her husband John served as willing subjects!

What we love most about the NAPCP Retreat is the opportunity to connect with and inspire each other. We shared delectable food, gathered on the rooftop of the Canary Hotel, relaxed on the beach, wrote about a million love notes to friends and mentors, and encouraged each other to “Enjoy the Journey” (our theme this year). Not only did we will our community forward on our individual journeys, we reminded each other to not let the “now” pass by – to truly relish in the enjoyment or growth opportunities presented by every moment. We are beyond grateful for our time together.

On our final evening of the Retreat we joined together for a farewell dessert reception, complete with champagne bar and a photo booth as only professional photographers can feature a photo booth (with a ring light, of course). We all communed, reminisced on the week, and brought our Retreat to a close with heart, humor, and soul. N A P C P N e w s l e t t e r Fe b r u a r y 2 0 1 7 | 2 5
