Free Car Care Clinics in April

T

he North Central Texas Council of Governments (NCTCOG) is sponsoring free Dallas-Fort Worth area Car Care Clinics in April, where motorists can speak with a certified technician about what may be wrong with their car. When the check engine light is lit, a vehicle won’t pass the annual Texas emissions inspection, and that means it can’t be registered. Because this “idiot light” may indicate problems with the vehicle’s emissions control system, it also means the car is emitting excess pollution into the air. Sometimes the fix costs less than we think; something as simple as a faulty gas cap could be causing the problem. There is no obligation to repair the car—only answers to questions. Many of the clinics will also provide food, prizes and other giveaways. NCTCOG staff will be on hand to explain the AirCheckTexas Drive a Clean Machine program. Drivers could get their car’s emission-related repairs fixed for as little as a $30 copay to pass the emissions inspection, and many people qualify for assistance. To find a clinic nearby, visit NTXCarCare.org. For more information, call 817-704-5605.

newsbriefs Try Milking a Cow at Circle N Dairy

Doug Kaufmann Keynote Speaker at Natural HealthFest

D

ircle N Dairy, a family owned and operated dairy farm in Gainesville, has added a life-size simulated cow, Holly the Holstein, that can be “milked” just like a real cow for participants on dairy tours that include learning about raising the crops; conservation methods employed on the farm; how the cows are fed; why their diets produce top-quality milk; and how they are taken care of. Now, visitors not only have the opportunity to observe to see how milking is done, they can try it themselves. Bottlefeeding the baby calves is another great experience for both children and adults. Owner and farmer Michelle Neu says, “Our tours give consumers the opportunity to learn how dairy farms operate and the differences between raw and store-bought, pasteurized milk. We think it’s a great benefit for consumers to get this information straight from the source, not a marketing agency.”

oug Kaufmann, author and host of the television show Know the Cause, will be the kickoff speaker at Natural Healthfest, taking place from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., May 7, at the Richardson Civic Center. Attendees at the event can benefit from more than 50 exhibit booths showcase cutting-edge health equipment and Doug Kaufmann services, dietary supplements, innovations in wellness, free screenings, numerous health modalities, skin care, gourmet natural foods and product samplings. Exhibitors are required to be of high integrity, with fair, consumer-focused and nondiscriminatory business practices. Upon coming home from Vietnam in 1971, Kaufmann had strange symptoms that until the early 1980s, he thought were related to food allergies. After studying how food is able to leak through the intestines, Kaufmann saw the role of fungus in provoking both symptoms and diseases. Kaufman has authored nine books on the subject of fungus and ill health that expound upon the many safe nutritional supplements that have antifungal properties, as well as antifungal medications familiar to physicians.

Cost is $7 (age 2 and up), including milk samples and goodie bags. Location: 2074 CR 446, Gainesville. A picnic area is available. To arrange a tour, call 940-372-0343 or visit CircleNDairy.com. See ad, page 11.

Early bird tickets are $18 and senior discount tickets are $16.20. Day of event ticket price is $20. Location: 411 W. Arapaho Rd., Richardson. To purchase tickets, visit NaturalHealthFest.com. See ad, page 3.

hanping Lu, D.C., L.Ac., M.D. (China), has written a new book, Say YES to Natural Healing – Chiropractic, Acupuncture & NAET. Dr. Lu explains why the spine is so important to our health and how it works as a bridge between the brain and the body. Any trauma or stress causes vertebra misalignments called subluxations that interfere with the communication between the body and brain, interrupt our body’s normal function and can cause pain or internal organ dysfunction. He describes Traditional Chinese Medicine tenets such as energy meridians and Nambudripad’s Allergy Elimination Techniques, including combining it with chiropractic adjustment and acupuncture. Lu completed his medical education and training at the Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences, Shandong University Medical College and Parker University of Chiropractic. Enhance Well-Being with a Spring Cleanse by Ronit Mor

A

lthough the body usually does a great job of dealing with harmful substances within and without, it is not invincible, and we should do all we can to give it some help with regular detoxification. Consuming an imbalanced diet or too much sugar, coffee, alcohol and nicotine, as well as not getting enough exercise, all influence our appearance and well-being negatively. Traces of environmental toxins and contaminants we ingest through food, water, air, clothing, household cleaning products and cosmetics without noticing it also put a strain on our metabolism as they deposit themselves in our cells and joints. Although naturally equipped with a liver, kidneys, intestine and lymph system to combat these toxins, if put under too much strain, our body is no longer capable of cleansing itself effectively. There seems to be an abundance of confusing amount of information about detoxification, but historically, cleanse treatments have a tradition of several thousand of years in different cultures worldwide. By reducing our body toxicity, we are going to see not only short-term health benefits, but also long-term benefits in increased longevity. Some of the benefits we may expect by following a well-planned, customized detox program, supervised by a physician or holistic practitioner, include ridding our body of excess waste, boosting our immune system, elevating our energy and vitality and promoting a balanced weight, healthier skin and hair and improved clarity and focus. When we set the stage for well-being, we are going to improve all areas of our life, and we should see better relationships, better productivity at work and a newfound or renewed zest for life. Ronit Mor is a naturopathic doctor, licensed aesthetician and owner of Ronit Mor Spa and Wellness, located at 6400 W. Plano Pkwy., in Plano. MERCURY USE LINKED TO DENTISTS’ TREMORS

A

study of thousands of dentists found that the absorption of mercury is associated with an increased risk of tremors. Published in the Journal of the American Dental Association, the study followed 13,906 dentists for a 24year period. The research tested the dentists’ urinary mercury levels to estimate their individual exposure. The incidence of tremors—the involuntary shaking of hands, arms and other parts of the body— among the dentists was then compared with their exposure to mercury. Higher exposures to mercury increased the risk of tremors among the entire population of dentists studied by 10 percent; the increased risk among the young dentists was 13 percent. 12

The ‘Dirty Dozen’ of Cancer-Causing Chemicals

S

cientists at the Environmental Working Group published a list of the 12 chemicals that have been most prevalently linked to cancer in numerous research studies. The list encompasses bisphenol A, atrazine, organophosphate pesticides, dibutyl phthalate, lead, mercury, per- or polyfluorochemicals (PFC), phthalates, diethlyhexyl phthalate, polybrominated diphenyl ethers, triclosan and nonylphenol. The scientists suggest that consumers can reduce their exposure to each of these chemicals by avoiding plastics marked with “PC” (polycarbonates) or the recycling number 7 mark, polyvinyl chloride (PVC) plastics in food packaging, PFC-treated wrappers on food and other products, lead paints, mercury-laden seafoods, phthalates-containing fragrances and plastics, foam products made before 2005, foreign antibacterial soaps, and detergents and paints with nonylphenol. Other proactive measures include drinking only filtered water when in agricultural areas and purchasing organic foods. The researchers contend, “Given that we live in a sea of chemicals, it makes sense to begin reducing exposures to ones we know are bad actors.”

Support the Soil Food Web by Beau Propes

S

oil is the basis of life and every living thing on the planet. Whether we are growing a vegetable garden or grilling on the balcony of our apartment, we are connected and very dependent on our soil. In a teaspoon of healthy soil, we can expect to find more than 5 million bacteria, up to 20 miles of fungi strands, thousands of protozoa and up to 500 beneficial nematodes. Then add in the mites, spiders and earthworms. All this together forms part of a complex system called the soil food web. While creepy critters crawling around in the garden might not sound appealing, these organisms are essential for healthy soil. A truly amazing symbiotic relationship exists between plants and soil organisms. Healthy soil grows healthy plants; from delicious vegetables to lawns and flowers. In this soil food web, these soil organisms work tirelessly, recycling dead

plant materials which maintain soil fertility. Most of these amazing creatures live in the top few inches of soil, and we want a healthy diversity of these guys in our soil to improve it. We can help them out because to thrive, they need air. Soil compaction decreases oxygen availability, and when oxygen goes down, the bad guys flourish—anaerobic bacteria and fungi that cause plant disease. Aeration can help get vital oxygen where it is needed. Adding compost or top dressing with compost can also loosen up the soil so air and water can penetrate. Earthworms, which love compost, are great aerators of the soil, and all those busy soil recyclers need good food. Compost is the perfect solution because it also improves soil structure and provides a more favorable soil habitat for the incredible diversity of life that exists there. In healthy soil,

there are also complex humic and fulvic acids that help break down nutrients and minerals into available forms for plants, and compost can be rich in these essential building blocks. Adding additional organic matter to the soil will also increase the cation exchange capacity (CEC) which increases the ability of the soil to hold nutrients for use when needed. Some bacteria in healthy soil can even convert nitrogen from the air and make it available to plants. Fertile soil has greater moisture retention, and organic matter can help with clay soil to add structure and resist compaction. In sandy soil, compost can help in nutrient and water retention, allowing water to move laterally. Watering less means more savings and less impact on our water supply. This spring, homeowners can be loyal to their soil and add organic matter to keep the soil food web going. Beau Propes is the owner and operator or Earth Kind Services, which provides organic compost and lawn treatments. For more information or to discuss a soil amendment for lawn or garden, call 469-744-0281 or visit EarthKindServices.com. See ad, page 49.

EVERYDAY SUSTAINABILITY Practical Ways We Can Help Out the Planet by Lisa Kivirist and John Ivanko

F

or many Americans, living more sustainably has become a natural part of their daily routine as they consistently recycle, eat healthy and use energy more efficiently. It’s just what they normally do every day. Every one of them had to start somewhere, growing their efforts over time to the point that nearly every activity yields better results for themselves, their family, their community and the planet. It might begin with the way we eat and eventually expand to encompass the way we work.

New American Way

“The sustainability movement is large and growing in the U.S.,” says Todd Larsen, with Green America, a grassroots nonprofit organization harnessing economic forces to create a socially just and environmentally sustainable society. “Half a million people turned out in New York City to march for action on climate change. People also are working in their local communi14

ties to oppose fracking and pollution, and to support green building and clean energy. Many businesses now include sustainability as a core business practice, including the 3,000 certified members of Green America’s Green Business Network.” This month, Natural Awakenings profiles the experiences of representative individuals from around the country that are helping to both make the world more sustainable and their own lives richer and more meaningful. From growing and cooking family food and line-drying laundry to powering their business with renewable energy, their approaches are as varied as the places they call home.

First Steps

“Many people start with something small at home, particularly if they’re concerned about the impacts on their family’s health,” says Larsen. “More Americans are approaching sustainability first through food. It’s relatively

easy to change spending habits to incorporate more organic, fair trade and non-GMO [genetically modified] foods, and with the growth of farmers’ markets nationwide, people are able to buy local more easily.” A focus on food quality is how Wendy Brown and her husband and five children launched their eco-journey just outside of Portland, Maine. “We started thinking about where our food came from, how it was grown and raised and what we could do to ensure that it was better,” says Brown. “What we don’t grow or forage ourselves, we try to purchase from local farmers.” Living more simply during the past decade has helped the family cut debt and become more financially stable. “Our entry point to sustainable living was to grow tomatoes on the steps of an apartment that Kelly and I once called home years ago,” echoes Erik Knutzen, who, with his wife Kelly Coyne, have transformed their 960-square-foot Los Angeles bungalow into an oasis where they grow food, keep chickens and bees, brew, bake and house their bikes. Gabriele Marewski’s journey also started with what she ate. “I became a vegetarian at 14, after reading Diet for a Small Planet, by Frances Moore Lappé,” says Marewski, who in 1999 turned an avocado orchard in Homestead, Florida, into Paradise Farms. “Forty-seven years later, I’m still a strict vegetarian. I believe it’s the single most important statement we can make about saving the planet.” Marewski’s five-acre farm showcases certified organic micro greens, edible flowers, oyster mushrooms and a variety of tropical fruits marketed to Miami-area chefs. Her farm also offers Dinner in Paradise farm-to-table experiences to raise funds for local nonprofits providing food for underprivileged city residents, and bed-andbreakfast lodging. Sweden’s Chalmers University of Technology offers a free online course, Sustainability in Everyday Life, based on five themes: energy, climate change, food, chemicals and globalization. “People can make a difference by making responsible choices in their everyday life,” says Anna Nyström Claesson, one of the three original teachers.

Consume Less

“Every step toward sustainability is important and in the right direction,” explains Gina Miresse, with the Midwest Renewable Energy Association (MREA), which will again host the world’s largest energy fair in June in Custer, Wisconsin. “It’s easy to start at home by adopting one new practice and sticking with it until it becomes a habit; then add a second practice and so on. This keeps people from getting overwhelmed.” We might, for example, switch to non-toxic home cleaning products when current products are used up. “There’s no need to throw everything in the trash and replace it all immediately—that would partially defeat the purpose of sustainability,” says Miresse. Green America, which suggests green alternatives to many products in online publications at GreenAmerica. org, recommends a congruent strategy. “We see people first change the way they purchase their food, move to reduce their purchases overall and green those they make, and then make their home more energy-efficient,” remarks Larsen. “Next, they consider walking and biking more.” Pamela Dixon explains, “On a day-to-day basis, it’s really about the products we use, like transferring to eco-friendly cleaners and yard maintenance, recycling electronic devices, paying bills electronically and receiving statements via email.” She and her husband, David Anderson, own Dave’s BrewFarm, in rural Wilson, Wisconsin, where they grow herbs, hops, raspberries and apples on 35 acres. “A 20-kilowatt wind generator supplies our electricity, and we use geothermal for heating and cooling,” adds Dixon. Due to career opportunities involving teaching principles of sustainability, the Wisconsin couple is in the process of selling the BrewFarm to move to La Crosse. “At our new home, we’re replacing the windows and appliances with more energy-efficient ones. We also chose our neighborhood so we can walk or bike to local grocery co-ops. We prefer to repair things when they break rather than buying something new, recycle everything the city will accept, compost food scraps and buy clothes at secondhand stores.” When the MREA Energy Fair began

27 years ago, the majority of attendees were interested in learning about first steps, such as recycling, relates Miresse. Today, sustainability basics ranging from fuel savings to water conservation are familiar, and they’re focused on revitalizing local economies. “Folks are now considering more ambitious practices such as sourcing food directly from local farmers, producing their own solar energy and incorporating energy storage, driving an electric vehicle or switching to more socially responsible investing.” The fair’s 250 workshops provide tools to help in taking their next steps on the journey to sustainability. Knutzen and Coyne’s passion has evolved from growing food into a larger DIY mode. “Cooking from scratch is something I prefer to do,” comments Knutzen. “I even grind my own flour.” Library books provide his primary source of inspiration. The Brown family likely echoes the thoughts of many American families. “We have many dreams, but the stark reality is that we live in a world that requires money,” says Wendy Brown. An electric car or solar electric system, for example, is a large investment. “The biggest barriers were mental blocks because we ‘gave up’ previous lifestyle norms,” she says. “Most people we know have a clothes dryer and can’t imagine living without one. Line-drying is just part of the bigger issue of time management for us, because living sustainably and doing things by hand takes longer.”

Each Day Counts

“The biggest and most positive impact I have comes from my general nonwaste philosophy,” advises Brown. “I try to reuse something rather than throwing it away. I’ve made underwear out of old camisoles and pajama pants from old flannel sheets. I reuse elastic from worn-out clothing. My travel beverage cup is a sauce jar with a reusable canning lid drilled with a hole for a reusable straw. Such examples show how we live every day.” Marewski’s love of travel doesn’t interfere with her sustainability quest. “When I travel, I like to walk or bicycle across countries,” she says. “It gives me a closer connection to the land and spontaneous contact with interesting people. Millennials’ Take on Fitness

They Like Short, Social and Fun Workouts by Derek Flanzraich

M

illennials are a big deal. Most businesses view them as trendsetters for good reason: Born between the early 1980s and early 2000s, they make up 25 percent of the population and represent $200 billion in annual buying power. Like the baby boomers before them, they also have the power to profoundly influence other generations, both young and old. Millennials have largely rejected previous fitness trends and instead paved a new path to health and wellness. In doing so, they’ve transformed both the business of fitness and the idea of what it means to be healthy. They’ve created a more personalized approach that encompasses the values of their generation.

What They Are Millennials are a fast-paced, wellinformed group. They devour news and information as soon as it’s released and then share it with others, usually via social media. This quick turnover cycle has led to an “out with the old, in with the new” mentality in many aspects of life. For a generation that strives to be trailblazers, things quickly become outdated. Millennials are always seek16

ing new ways to get fit and eat healthy, even if it means creating something unique to them. The Internet has allowed these young adults to find more like-minded people than ever before. They grew up with constant connectivity, which has allowed them to build larger communities of friends online as well as locally, and keep everyone apprised of their fitness goals and progress. Millennials’ overscheduled lives mean they value shorter, quicker and more convenient options, especially in regard to workouts and healthy meals. They are more likely than any other age group to track their own health progress and use technologies such as health and fitness apps which monitor such data as steps, heart rate and caloric intake as a complement to their fitness routines. Being healthy means more than weight loss or looking good to them. For this pivotal generation, health is increasingly about living a happier life.

What They Like Millennials’ values and unique approach to health have fostered the growth of innovative fitness movements, health-focused stores and restaurants

and alternative medicine. Here are the three biggest trends making an impact on the wellness industry. What’s hot: Shorter, full-body workouts that are also fun. What’s not: Steady-state cardio exercises as a starting point for losing weight and improving health. It’s been increasingly shown that steady-state cardio workouts may be the most effective way to lose weight, but they also lack widespread appeal. Instead of sticking to a traditional treadmill, many millennials have flocked to workout regimens that regularly switch exercises or use high-intensity interval training, such as Zumba, SoulCycle and CrossFit. What’s hot: A more holistic approach to health. What’s not: Diets that emphasize rapid weight loss. Millennials don’t believe that weight is the major indicator of health as much as previous generations have. Instead, they increasingly think of weight as just one among many key components of a healthy lifestyle. A higher percentage define being healthy as having regular physical activity and good eating habits. What’s hot: Alternative workouts that are customizable, fun and social. What’s not: Inflexible gym memberships and daily attendance. Instead of hitting the gym, young adults tend to prefer new forms of fitness that can be personalized to their needs. They like obstacle races such as Tough Mudder, fun and distance runs like The Color Run, at-home fitness workouts like P90X, and bodyweight regimens. As a group, millennials are redefining wellness and changing how following generations will view health. Their preferences for fun, personalized workouts and holistic wellness have fueled trends with far-reaching implications for the food, tech and healthcare industries, and that’s just the start. Derek Flanzraich is an entrepreneur on a mission to help the world think about health in a healthier way. He is the founder and CEO of Greatist, a New York City-based media startup working to make healthy living cool.

Marie Kondo on the Joy of Tidying Up

Simplicity Invites Happiness into Our Lives by April Thompson

that the best way to choose what to keep is to actually hold each item. As you do, ask yourself, “Does this spark joy?” When you touch something, your body reacts, and its response to each item is different. The process of assessing how you feel about the things you own—identifying those that have fulfilled their purpose, expressing your gratitude and bidding them farewell and good wishes for their onward journey—is a rite of passage to a new life.

Must keepsakes be included?

How can we begin to get and stay organized? It’s not about a set of rules, but acquiring the right mindset for becoming a tidy person. Think in concrete terms, 18

North Texas

NA-NTX.com

so that you can picture what it would be like to live in a clutter-free space. Start by identifying your bigger goal. Ask yourself why you want this, repeating the question to get to the root of the answer. As you explore the reasons behind your ideal lifestyle, you’ll realize that the ultimate reason is to be happy. Then you are ready to begin. I recommend cleaning out and organizing your entire space in one go-around. When completed, the change is so profound that it inspires a strong aversion to your previously cluttered state. The key is to make the change so sudden that you experience a complete change of heart. By discarding the easy things first, you can gradually hone your decision-making skills, including knowing who else can use what you don’t need. I recommend starting with clothes, then move to books, documents, miscellaneous items and finally anything with sentimental value. photo by Ichigo Natsuno

J

apanese organizing consultant Marie Kondo helps us discover happiness through tidiness. Already perusing home and lifestyle magazines by age 5, she spent her childhood “tidying” up her surroundings rather than playing with toys. The organizing system Kondo went on to develop, the KonMari method, defies most long-held rules of organizing, such as installing clever storage solutions to accommodate stuff or de-cluttering one area at a time. Her New York Times bestseller, The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up, has been published in 30 countries, demonstrating that her methods speak to universal desires, including a hunger for order and simplicity. She’s now released a companion book, Spark Joy: An Illustrated Master Class on the Art of Organizing and Tidying Up. Kondo’s principles, including vertically stacking clothing and using special folding methods for socks, can seem quirky, yet her approach gets results. Kondo claims a nearly zero percent “clutter relapse” rate among clients because they’ve become surrounded only by things they love.

Is it important to touch every single object in the decision process? At one point in my life, I was virtually a “disposal unit”, constantly on the lookout for superfluous things. One day, I realized that I had been so focused on what to discard that I had forgotten to cherish the things I loved. Through this experience, I concluded

Mementoes are reminders of a time that gave us joy, yet truly precious memories will never vanish, even if you discard the associated objects. By handling each sentimental item, you process your past. The space we live in should be for the person we are becoming now, not for the person we were in the past.

What do you recommend for organizing what remains after a purge? The secret to maintaining an uncluttered room is to pursue simplicity in storage, so that you can see at a glance what you have. My storage rules are simple: Store all items of the same type in one place and don’t scatter storage space.

How does this process change us and our relationship to things? Through it, you identify both what you love and need in your home and in your life. People have told me that decluttering has helped them achieve lifelong dreams, such as launching their own business; in other cases, it has helped them let go of negative attachments and unhappy relationships. Despite a drastic reduction in belongings, no one has ever regretted it, even those that ended up with a fifth of their earlier possessions. It’s a continuing strong reminder that they have been living all this time with things they didn’t need. Connect with freelance writer April Thompson, of Washington, D.C., at AprilWrites.com.

Natural Awakenings' Annual Natural Living Directory Glossary Acupressure: Based on the same system as acupuncture, acupressure stimulates body pressure points using fingers and hands instead of needles, in order to restore a balanced flow of life energy (qi or chi, pronounced “chee”). This force moves through the body along 12 energy pathways, or meridians, which practitioners “unblock and strengthen”. Common styles include jin shin, which gently holds at least two points at once for a minute or more; and shiatsu, which applies firm pressure to each point for three to five seconds. (Also see shiatsu.) Tui na and Thai massage stimulate qi through acupressure hand movements, fullbody stretches and Chinese massage techniques. (Also see tui na.) Other forms of acupressure include jin shin do, jin shin jyutsu and acu-yoga. Learn more at Acupressure.com. Acupuncture: An ancient Oriental technique that stimulates the body’s ability to sustain and balance an electromagnetic life-force (qi or chi, pronounced “chee”) which is channeled in a continuous flow throughout the body via a network of “meridians”. Disease is understood as an imbalance in the meridian system. Diagnosis of an imbalance is made by “reading” the pulse, face, tongue and body energy. To correct it, a practitioner inserts acupuncture needles at specific points along the meridians to stimulate or disperse the flow of life force. Acupuncture principles include the yin and yang polarities and the associations of the five elements of fire, earth, metal, water and wood with bodily organs. Aerial Yoga: Aerial yoga and aerial silk classes utilize fabric harnesses to suspend the body in the air for a novel fluid and acrobatic form of yoga. Aerial classes are suitable for all experience levels and can be used to relax joints and help realign the body.

Alexander Technique: This awareness practice helps identify and change unconscious, negative physical habits related to posture and movement, breathing and tension. While observing the way an individual walks, stands, sits or performs other basic movements, the practitioner keeps their hands in easy contact with the body and gently guides it to encourage a release of restrictive muscular tension. The technique is frequently used to treat repetitive strain injury or carpal tunnel syndrome, backaches and stiff necks and shoulders. Learn more at AlexanderTechnique.com. Alkaline Water: Drinking water that has been treated through the use of a water ionizer. Proponents of alkaline water believe that high acidity in the body contributes to a number of physical illnesses and conditions, from fatigue and weight gain to more serious disorders. They believe that drinking alkaline water can help resolve these health problems by raising the body’s pH level. Aromatherapy: An ancient healing art that uses the essential oils of herbs and flowers to treat emotional disorders such as stress and anxiety and a wide range of other ailments. Oils are massaged into the skin, inhaled or added to a water bath. Often used in conjunction with massage therapy, acupuncture, reflexology, herbology and chiropractic or other holistic treatments. Art Therapy: Uses the creative process of making art to improve and enhance physical, mental and emotional wellbeing and to deepen self-awareness. The therapist makes a diagnosis and determines treatment plans by encouraging a client to express his or her feelings and unconscious thoughts through the nonverbal creative process and by observing the forms and content created. Ashtanga (Yoga): A physically demanding style that is light on meditation, Ashtanga yoga employs a fast-paced series of flowing poses to build strength, flexibility and stamina. Developed by Indian yoga master Sri K. Pattabhi Jois, Ashtanga’s progressively difficult postures are synchronized with a loud 22

breath (called Ujyaii breath in Sanskrit) and are designed to produce intense internal heat and purifying sweat in order to detoxify muscles and organs. The room is usually heated to warm muscles and increase flexibility. Preferred by many athletes, this style is too intense and demanding for most beginners. Ayurveda: The oldest medical system known to man and a comprehensive spiritual teaching practiced in India for 4,000 years. It focuses on achieving and maintaining perfect health via the balance of the elements air, fire and water (illness is considered an excess of any element). A patient’s body type, determined according to Ayurveda principles, is the basis for individualized dietary regimens and other preventive therapeutic interventions. Ayurveda prescriptions might include purification procedures for the restoration of biological rhythms; experience of expanded consciousness through meditation; nutritional counseling; stress reduction; enhancing neuromuscular conditions; and behavioral modification. Bikram (Yoga): A strenuous style, designed to make students sweat, taught in rooms heated to a minimum of 105º Fahrenheit, with about 40 percent humidity. The superheated rooms facilitate stretching and allow the body to release toxins through perspiration. Former national India yoga champion Bikram Choudhury developed the style, whose 26 demanding poses are performed in a specific order, to promote optimal health and proper function of every bodily system. Bikram yoga is a good choice for highly fit individuals and seasoned students seeking a challenge. Biofeedback: A relaxation technique that monitors internal body states and is used especially for stress-related conditions such as asthma, migraines, insomnia and high blood pressure. During biofeedback, patients monitor minute metabolic changes (e.g., temperature, heart rate and muscle tension), with the aid of sensitive machines. By consciously thinking, visualizing, moving, relaxing, etc., they learn which activities produce desirable changes in the internal processes being monitored.

Bio-Identical Hormone Replacement (BHRT): The treatment of the symptoms of menopause (and its male equivalent, andropause) through the use of hormones produced using raw materials derived from plant sources that have the same chemical structure as those naturally produced by the body. Many compounding pharmacies have staff trained in Bio-Identical Hormone Replacement Therapy (BHRT), which is thought by its proponents to have fewer risks and side effects than traditional methods of hormone replacement. BodyTalk: Developed by chiropractor and acupuncturist Dr. John Veltheim, BodyTalk is based upon bio-energetic psychology, dynamic systems theory, Chinese medicine and applied kinesiology. By integrating tapping, breathing and focusing techniques, BodyTalk helps the body synchronize and balance its systems and strengthens its capability of self-repair. BodyTalk is used to address a range of health challenges, ranging from chronic fatigue and allergies to addictions and cellular damage. Practitioners are usually licensed massage therapists (LMT) or bodyworkers. Learn more at BodyTalkSystem.com. Bodywork: Massage and the physical practices of yoga are perhaps the best-known types of bodywork; both have proven successful in relieving tension and stress, promoting blood flow, loosening stiff muscles and stimulating the organs. Massage therapies encompass countless techniques, including Swedish massage, shiatsu and Rolfing. The same is true for yoga. Other types of bodywork include martial arts

practices like aikido, ki aikido and Tai chi chuan. Some others are the Alexander technique, Aston patterning, Bowen, Breema bodywork, Feldenkrais method, Hellerwork, polarity therapy, Rosen method, Rubenfeld synergy and Trager. Finding bodywork that improves mental and physical health is a highly individual process. Several types may be combined for the greatest benefit. Bowen Technique (also called Bowtech and Bowenwork): This muscle and connective tissue therapy employs gentle, purposeful moves, through light clothing, to help rebalance the autonomic nervous system (ANS). The practitioner’s subtle inputs deliver signals to the ANS at specific locations—muscles, tendons, ligaments or nerves—and the body responds in its own time, within its vital capacity. The technique is named after its originator, Australian Tom Bowen, who also introduced the concept of inserting periods of rest between a series of movements within a treatment session. Sometimes called the homeopathy of bodywork, Bowtech addresses imbalances and both acute and chronic pain. Learn more at Bowtech.com. Chelation Therapy: A safe, painless, nonsurgical medical procedure that improves metabolic and circulatory function by removing undesirable heavy metals such as lead, mercury, cadmium and copper from the body. r. Deborah Z. Bain, owner of Healthy Kids Pediatrics, bridges the gap between alternative and traditional Western approaches to medical treatment. They use specialized testing to assess nutritional deficiencies, allergies, sensitivities to food and environment, toxic burden and more to create a unique program that helps restore and optimize each child’s health. “Children today suffer from more chronic medical illnesses than ever before. They are medically managed with medications and treatment protocols that often have moderate to severe side effects and do not lead the patient any closer to being cured,” says Bain. She states, “In medical school, we were taught to diagnose and treat with medications, surgeries, therapies etc. Using an integrative and functional medicine approach, I focus on restoring health. I sought out additional training in functional medicine because of my own health battles and wrote about my experience of being a patient in the very medical system I served and my journey to find real health that ultimately shaped my new approach to my medical practice in the book How a Chiropractor Saved My Life. organs from further damage. Over time, injections may halt the progress of the underlying condition that triggers the development of various degenerative conditions such as diabetes, arthritis, Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s diseases, and cancer. Chinese Medicine: Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) is one of the world’s oldest and most complete systems of holistic health care. It combines the use of medicinal herbs, acupuncture, food therapy, massage and therapeutic exercise, along with the recognition that wellness in mind, body and emotions depends on the harmonious flow of life-force energy (qi or chi, pronounced “chee”). Chiropractic: Based on the premise that proper structural alignment permits free flow of nerve activity in the body. When spinal vertebrae are out of alignment, they put pressure on the spinal cord and the nerves radiating from it, potentially leading to diminished function and illness. Misalignment can be caused by physical trauma, poor posture and stress. The chiropractor seeks to analyze and correct these misalignments through spinal manipulation or adjustment. Colon Therapy: An internal bath that washes away old toxic waste accumulated along the walls of the colon. It is administered with pressurized water by a professional using special equipment. A colonic irrigation is the equivalent of approximately four to six enemas and cleans out matter that collects in the pockets and kinks of the colon. The treatment is used as both a corrective process and for prevention of disease. Colonics are used for ailments such as constipation, psoriasis, acne, allergies, headaches and the common cold. Craniosacral Therapy (CST): The practitioner applies manual therapeutic procedures to remedy distortions in the structure and function of the craniosacral mechanism—the brain and spinal cord, the bones of the skull, the sacrum and interconnected membranes. Craniosacral work is based upon two major premises: the bones of the skull 26

can be manipulated because they never completely fuse; and the pulse of the cerebrospinal fluid can be balanced by a practitioner trained to detect pulse variations. CST, also referred to as cranial osteopathy, is used to treat chronic pain, migraine headaches, temporomandibular joint disorder (TMJ), ear and eye problems, balance problems, learning difficulties, dyslexia and hyperactivity. Crystal & Gem Therapy: Practitioners use quartz crystals and gemstones for therapeutic and healing purposes, asserting that the substances have recognizable energy frequencies and the capacity to amplify other frequencies in the body. They also absorb and store frequencies and can essentially be programmed to help effect healing. In the ancient art of ‘laying-on of stones,’ practitioners place crystals and gemstones on various parts of the body, corresponding to its chakra points (energy centers), in order to balance energy flow. Dance/Movement Therapy: A method of expressing thoughts and feelings through movement, developed during the 1940s. Participants, guided by trained therapists, are encouraged to move freely, sometimes to music. Dance/movement therapy can be practiced by people of all ages to promote self-esteem and gain insight into their own emotional problems, but is also used to help those with serious mental and physical disabilities. In wide use in the United States, this modality is becoming established around the world. Decluttering: Based on the theory that clutter drains both physical and mental energy. Decluttering involves two components. The first focuses on releasing things (clothing, papers, furniture, objects and ideas) that no longer serve a good purpose in one’s life. The second focuses on creating a simple system of personal organization that is easy to maintain and guards against accumulating things that are neither necessary nor nourishing. Decompression Therapy: A nonsurgical means of relieving pain to the lower back and neck and is often referred to as spinal decompression

Metal and Mineral Imbalances May Produce Migraines

R

esearch from Turkey’s Yüzüncü Yil University has concluded that migraines may be linked with higher levels of heavy metals in the blood and deficiencies in important minerals. The research tested 50 people, including 25 diagnosed with migraines and 25 healthy control subjects. None of those tested were taking supplements, smoked, abused alcohol or drugs or had liver or kidney disease or cardiovascular conditions. Blood tests of both groups found that those with frequent migraines had four times the cadmium, more than twice of both the iron and the lead and nearly three times the levels of manganese in their bloodstreams compared to the healthy subjects. In addition, the migraine group had about a third of the magnesium, about 20 times less zinc and almost half the copper levels compared to the healthy group. “In light of our results, it can be said that trace element level disturbances might predispose people to migraine attacks,” the researchers stated.

LOSING PANCREATIC FAT REVERSES DIABETES

A

study from Newcastle University, in England, has found that losing fat content in the pancreas can alleviate Type 2 diabetes. The researchers tested 18 obese people between the ages of 25 and 65 that were diagnosed with diabetes alongside a control group that were not. Subjects received gastric band surgery before eating an appropriately healthful diet for eight weeks. During this time, subjects in both groups lost an average of nearly 13 percent of their body weight and around 1.2 percent of their body fat. More importantly, the diabetes group lost about 6.6 percent of triglyceride pancreatic fat, or about 0.6 grams. The weight loss and loss of triglyceride fat from the pancreas allowed the patients to produce normal amounts of insulin. Professor Roy Taylor, the head researcher of the study, says, “For people with Type 2 diabetes, losing weight allows them to lose excess triglyceride fat out of the pancreas and allows function to return to normal.”

Deep Tissue Bodywork: In this method, stretching and moving the connective tissue that envelops the muscles (fascia) works to lengthen and balance the body along its natural, vertical axis. Distortions of the connective tissue may be caused by internal reactions and complications due to accidents, emotional tensions or past unreleased traumas. The practitioner uses slow strokes, direct pressure or friction across the muscles via fingers, thumbs or elbows. Deep tissue massage works to detoxify tissue by helping to remove accumulated lactic acid and other waste products from the muscles. The therapy is used to ease or eliminate chronic muscular pain or inflammatory pain from arthritis, tendonitis and other ailments, and help with injury rehabilitation. Learn more at DeepBodywork.com.

Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT): EFT is an emotional therapy process based on the Chinese meridian, or energy system, to heal diseases and physical ailments. Through the EFT self-help process, one mentally tunes in to specific issues while tapping on meridian points with the fingertips. This tapping stimulates corresponding areas of the body, thus balancing disturbances in the meridian system and allowing non-serving emotions to be released. View free tutorial at EmoFree.com.

Dentistry (Holistic): Regards the mouth as a microcosm of the entire body. The oral structures and the whole body are seen as a unit. Holistic dentistry often incorporates such methods as homeopathy, biocompatibility testing and nutritional counseling. Most holistic dentists emphasize wellness and preventive care, while avoiding (and often recommending the removal of silver-mercury fillings). Detoxification: The practice of resting, cleansing and nourishing the body from the inside out. According to some holistic practitioners, accumulated toxins can drain the body of energy and make it more susceptible to disease. Detoxification techniques may include fasts, special diets, sauna sweats and colon cleansing. Doula: A woman who supports an expectant mother through pregnancy, labor, birth and the postpartum period. Studies indicate that support in labor has profound benefits, including shorter labor, less desire for pain medication, lower rate of Caesarian delivery and more ease in initiation of breast28

Environmental Medicine: Explores the role of dietary and environmental allergens in health and illness. Factors such as dust, mold, chemicals and certain foods may cause allergic reactions that can dramatically influence diseases, ranging from asthma and hay fever to headaches and depression. Enzyme Therapy: Can be an important first step in restoring health and well-being by helping to remedy digestive problems. Plant and pancreatic enzymes are used in complementary ways to improve digestion and absorption of essential nutrients. Treatment includes enzyme supplements, coupled with a healthy diet that features whole foods. Fair Trade: Fair trade includes sustainable, environmentally sound agricultural practices, just like green living, and focuses specifically on fair labor practices and fair prices for farmer’s crops across national borders. r. Rebeca Gracia is the director of The Thermography Center of Dallas, which offers regulation thermography (RT), a noninvasive, early detection process that can provide health practitioners signs of preliminary changes and monitoring of internal organ systems, including breast; teeth; immune function of thymus; hormone feedback of thyroid, adrenals and pituitary: and cardiovascular components, often before symptoms are present. Regulation thermograms for men, women and children involve scanning the skin twice in up to 120 locations with a sensitive, handheld tool to measure skin surface temperatures. It is most often associated with breast health, but RT works for the whole body and unlike mammography, there is no pain, compression or radiation. Gracia says, “Sometimes regulation thermography is mischaracterized as a last resort type of test. In actuality, RT has the potential to show imbalances within the body years before a patient may be aware of it. The testing is easy and can provide a tremendous amount of information about your health to help guide and monitor potential treatment options for symptoms that are manifesting now, as well as prevention of future concerns.” The Thermography Center of Dallas is located in Addison and Rockwall. Students of the Feldenkrais Method unlearn unworkable movements and discover better, personalized ways to move, using mind-body principles of slowed action, conscious breathing, body awareness and thinking about their feelings. Feldenkrais takes two forms: In individual hands-on sessions (Functional Integration), the practitioner’s touch is used to address the student’s breathing and body alignment. r. Catherine Kuiken says, “Chiropractic saved my life. At the age of 12, doctors diagnosed me with Lupus and told me I would not live past age 22. But after only six months of chiropractic care, I no longer tested positive for the disease and my symptoms were gone.” She notes that chiropractic adjustments can remove physical interferences from the central nervous system, but a patient has to be ready and willing to take charge of their health by making dietary, hydration and exercise and lifestyle changes in conjunction with the adjustments that will allow their bodies to heal, achieve optimal health and maintain it. Kuiken is particularly tuned in to helping people with Lupus and other autoimmune diseases, and has had success helping patients with head trauma/ concussions, deviated nasal septum, vaccine injury and birth trauma utilizing upper cervical chiropractic techniques, acupuncture, Cranial Adjusting Turner Style (CATS), acupuncture and dietary protocols. “My adjustment techniques are gentle and effective, from infant to elderly, and because I so firmly believe that the whole family needs to make health a priority, we make quality ongoing care affordable with unlimited monthly adjustment plans ranging from $137 for an individual to $237 for a family,” says Kuiken. Guided Imagery & Creative Visualization: Uses positive thoughts, images and symbols to focus the mind on the workings of the body to accomplish a particular goal, desired outcome or physiological change, such as pain relief or healing of disease. This flow of thought can take many forms and involve, through the imagination, all the physical senses. Imagination is an important element of the visualization process; it helps create a mental picture of what is desired in order to transform life circumstances. Hatha (Yoga): Hatha yoga is the foundational discipline on which nearly all other styles are based. In Sanskrit, ha represents the sun and tha, the moon—hence, the practice is designed to bring the yin and yang, light and dark, masculine and feminine aspects and polarities into balance. Essentially, Hatha yoga brings all aspects of life together. A class described as hatha will likely include slow-paced stretching, asanas, or postures, that are not too difficult, simple breathing exercises and perhaps, seated meditation. Hatha yoga classes provide a good starting point for beginners, who can learn basic poses and relaxation techniques.

tinctures, extracts, oils, ointments, compresses and poultices. Homeopathy: A therapy that uses small doses of specially prepared plants and minerals to stimulate the body’s defense mechanisms and healing processes in order to cure illness. Homeopathy, taken from the Greek words homeos, meaning “similar”, and pathos, meaning “suffering”, employs the concept that “like cures like”. A remedy is individually chosen for a person based on its capacity to cause, if given in an overdose, physical and psychological symptoms similar to those the patient is experiencing. Hydrotherapy: The use of water, ice, steam and hot and cold temperatures to maintain and restore health. Treatments include full-body immersion, steam baths, saunas, sitz baths, colonic irrigation and the application of hot and/or cold compresses. Hydrotherapy is effective for treating a wide range of conditions and can easily be used at home as part of a self-care program.

Healing Touch: A non-invasive, relaxing and nurturing energy therapy that helps to restore physical, emotional, mental and spiritual balance and support self-healing. A gentle touch is used on or near the fully clothed client to influence the body’s inner energy centers and exterior energy fields. Healing touch is used to ease acute and chronic conditions, assist with pain management, encourage deep relaxation and accelerate wound healing.

Hypnotherapy: A range of hypnosis techniques that allow practitioners to bypass the conscious mind and access the subconscious. The altered state that occurs under hypnosis has been compared to a state of deep meditation or transcendence, in which the innate recuperative abilities of the psyche are allowed to flow more freely. The subject can achieve greater clarity regarding his or her own wants and needs, explore other events or periods of life that require resolution, or generally develop a more positive attitude. Often used to help people lose weight or stop smoking, it is also used in the treatment of phobias, stress and as an adjunct to the treatment of illnesses.

Herbal Medicine: This oldest form of medicine uses natural plants in a wide variety of forms for their therapeutic value. Herbs produce and contain various chemical substances that act upon the body to strengthen its natural functions without the negative side effects of synthetic drugs. They may be taken internally or applied externally via teas,

Integral (Yoga): A gentle style of yoga brought to this country in 1966 by Sri Swami Satchidananda. Classes are structured to balance physical effort with relaxation and include breathing practices, chanting and both guided and silent meditation. Integral yoga is suitable for beginners and helpful for more advanced students who wish to deepen their physical and spiritual awareness.

High Harvest Indoor Gardening is Looking Up

The world’s largest indoor farm, in Japan, covers 25,000 square feet, with 15 tiers of stacked growing trays that produce 10,000 heads of lettuce per day, or about 100 times more per square foot than traditional methods. It uses 99 percent less water and 40 percent less power than outdoor fields, while producing 80 percent less food waste. Customized LED lighting helps plants grow up to two-and-a-half times faster than normal, one of the many innovations co-developed by Shigeharu Shimamura. He says the overall process is only half automated so far. “Machines do some work, but the picking is done manually. In the future, though, I expect an emergence of harvesting robots.” These may help transplant seedlings, harvest produce or transport product to packaging areas. Meanwhile, Singapore’s Sky Farms, the world’s first low-carbon, hydraulically driven, urban vertical farm, runs on a Sky Urban Vertical Farming System, making the most of rainwater and gravity. Using a water pulley system, 38 growing troughs rotate around a 30-foot-tall aluminum tower. A much bigger project, a 69,000-square-foot vertical indoor garden under construction at AeroFarms headquarters, in Newark, New Jersey, will be capable of producing up to 2 million pounds of vegetables and herbs annually. Integrative Medicine: This holistic approach combines conventional Western medicine with complementary alternative treatments, in order to simultaneously treat mind, body and spirit. Geared to the promotion of health and the prevention of illness, it neither rejects conventional medicine nor accepts alternative therapies, without serious evaluation. Integrative Yoga Therapy: Gentle postures, guided imagery, assisted stretching and breathwork help to make this yoga a useful style for rehab centers and hospitals. Joseph LePage began this therapy in the early 1990s to help promote healing and well-being for individuals facing heart disease, cancer, AIDS and psychiatric disorders. Iridology: Analysis of the delicate structure of the iris, the colored portion of the eye, to reveal information about conditions within the body. More than 90 specific zones on each iris, for a combined total of 180-plus zones, correspond to specific areas of the body. Because body weaknesses are often noticeable in the iris long before they are discernible through blood work or other laboratory analysis, iridology can be a useful tool for preventive self-care. Iyengar (Yoga): Noted for precise alignment and symmetry of postures,

Jin Shin Jyutsu: A form of acupressure refined from ancient Japanese traditions, jin shin jyutsu acts to harmonize the life force within. Practitioners evaluate pulses, body conformation and symptoms to customize sessions designed to alleviate discomfort while addressing its cause(s). Utilizing the hands as jumper cables to reawaken bodily energy, sequences of vital energy points are held to guide, redirect and reestablish harmony in spirit, mind and body. Applied kinesiology tests the relative strength and weakness of selected muscles to identify decreased function in body organs and systems, as well as imbalances and restrictions in the body’s energy flow. check the body’s response to treatments that are being considered. Kripalu (Yoga): An integrated practice that emphasizes breathing and alignment and coordinates the breath with movement. Amrit Desai, a long-time student of Kundalini yoga master Swami Kripaluvananda, developed Kripalu, also called the yoga of consciousness. This style incorporates three stages of development, beginning with postural alignment and progressing to meditation, with longer posture holding, finally creating a meditation in motion, where the movement from one posture to another happens unconsciously and spontaneously. Students are encouraged to honor “the wisdom of the body” and to work according to the limits of their flexibility and strength. Kripalu is suitable for everyone from beginners to advanced students. Kundalini (Yoga): A powerful, enlightening style that incorporates mantras (chanting), meditation, visualization, breathing and guided relaxation, with precise postures. According to Hindu philosophy, kundalini is a concentrated form of prana, or life force, represented by a coiled, sleeping serpent said to reside at the base of the spine. When breath and movement awaken the serpent (energy), it moves up the spine through each of the seven chakras (energy centers) of the body, bringing energy and bliss. Once

LaStone Therapy Stone Massage: This soothing form of massage employs smooth, heated or cooled stones to elicit physical healing, mental relaxation and a spiritual connection with Earth’s energy. Stones are placed at different spots on the body for energy balancing or may be used by the therapist on specific trigger points. Warm stones encourage the exchange of blood and lymph and provide relaxing heat for deep-tissue work. Cold stones aid with inflammation, moving blood out of the affected area and balancing male/female energies. The alternating heat and cold of thermotherapy helps activate all of the body’s healing processes with a rapid exchange of blood and oxygen and an alternating rise and fall of respiration rate as the body seeks homeostasis. Earth Song

Mother Nature’s Rhythms Restore the Soul by Susan Andra Lion

M

other Earth’s gentle hand is the secure cushion that warms us on long nights and sings comforting messages through endless days, protecting us even when things seem amiss. Take in her lovely presence. Embrace her consistent wisdom. Know that her dreams are ours and ours hers, connected by timely, comforting songs. It’s time to step away from the manicured lawns, concrete walks and well-planned gardens. An open door beckons us to the sparkling air out there to listen to the grasses breathe and murmur. Prairie grasses roll on and on through curvaceous hills and flat-edged fields, undeterred by human attempts to control their rippling arpeggios. We are asked to just listen. Be alone with the music of the grasses and be in harmony with the hum of the universe. Mother Earth’s apron is laden with flowers; simple, ever-present reminders that we are loved. She tempts us to take some time off, shed our shoes and settle into the lyrical realms of her strong body. The trees reach to the depths of the earth, deep into the mystery of lavender waters, and simultaneously throw their arms to the heavens, connecting all things living. The wind hears the prevailing songs that weave in and out of these lovely courtiers of the forest. In listening to their unerring stories, we let their siren songs sigh into our soul. It’s time to play in Earth’s garden and see her for who she is—today. Don’t hesitate. Go, play, linger, breathe and be one with the present moment. Meditation: The intentional directing of attention to one’s inner self. Methods and practices to achieve a meditative state are based upon various principles using the body or mind and may employ control or letting-go mechanisms. Techniques include the use of imagery, mantras and observation, and the control of breathing. Research has shown that regular meditation can contribute to psychological and physiological well-being. As a spiritual practice, meditation is used to facilitate a mystical sense of oneness with a higher power or the Universe. It can also help reduce stress and alleviate stress-related ailments, such as anxiety and high blood pressure. Myofascial Release: This wholebody, hands-on technique seeks to free the body from the grip of tight fascia, or connective tissue, thus restoring normal alignment and function and reducing pain. Therapists use their hands to apply mild, sustained pressure in order to gently stretch and soften fascia. Developed in the late 1960s by Physical Therapist John Barnes, myofascial release is used to treat neck and back pain, headaches, recurring sports injuries and scoliosis. Founded and developed by Donald Epstein. Practitioners employ gentle force to the spine to help the body eliminate mechanical tension in the neurological system. The body naturally develops strategies to dissipate stored tension/energy, thus enhancing self-regulation of tension and spinal interference. (Also see Chiropractic.) Neuro-Emotional Technique (NET): This mind-body therapy seeks to restore well-being by removing certain biochemical and bioelectrical charges stored in the brain and manifested as illness or imbalances in the body. She received residency training in general surgery and family medicine at Parkland Hospital/UT Southwestern; postgraduate training, certification and a graduate of Applying Functional Medicine in Clinical Practice from the Institute for Functional Medicine. “I realized my Western medicine training was treating disease, but not fostering wellness,” states O’Brien. I serve as physician-partner for my patients on their journey to whole health and wellness; taking the time to listen and know my patient, so we can find the root cause of their illness and utilize therapeutic interventions that resonate with them personally,” she says. “As a licensed medical doctor in the state of Texas, with residency training in two specialties, I have a fiduciary responsibility to every patient, which sets me apart from non-medical doctor practitioners of functional medicine. I am legally, morally and ethically responsible for the health outcomes of my patients, and I take that very seriously. I sell nothing in my office. I am here as their physician-partner, not a merchant.” Dr. Tricia O’Brien is located at 8641 5th St., Ste. W8, Frisco. r. Alina Olteanu is a holistic and integrative medicine pediatrician and owner of Whole Child Pediatrics of North Texas, in Frisco, offering the best of preventive medical visits, prescription medications, nutrition counseling and vaccines, as well as integrative, holistic treatments including supplements, herbs, mind-body modalities, functional medicine, homeopathy, ayurvedic and Traditional Chinese Medicine treatments. After beginning her medical career as a conventional allopathic pediatrician, Olteanu says she became concerned seeing patients with chronic diseases like ADHD, depression, anxiety, asthma, allergies, eczema, multiple throat and ear infections not improving with strictly traditional Western methods. That’s when she shifted gears and started looking into expanding her healing toolkit by doing a fellowship at the Arizona Center for Integrative Medicine. Integrative medicine is healing-oriented medicine that takes account the whole person (body, mind and spirit), including all aspects of health and lifestyle. It emphasizes the therapeutic relationship between patient and practitioner, is evidence-based and makes use of all appropriate therapies, both conventional and alternative. “I’m finally able to really help my patients get and stay healthy,” says Olteanu.

tion. The methodology is concerned primarily with neuromuscular function as it relates to the structural, chemical and mental physiologic regulatory mechanisms. Kinesiology, which originated within the chiropractic profession, is an approach to clinical practice, with multidisciplinary applications. Kinesiology is a form of diagnosis that uses muscle testing as a feedback mechanism to examine how a person’s body is functioning. Since Kinesiology draws together elements from many diverse therapies, it provides a unified, interdisciplinary approach to health care. Nutritional Analysis: Identifying nutrient challenges are critical because they can affect all body functions as well as organ, joint and bone stability. Proper nutrition, supported with whole food supplements, promotes overall health and provides the human body the building blocks for tissue repair, helping re-establish proper function throughout the body and aiding in all the body’s healing processes. To further support your health, whole food and herbal supplements may be added to your health care plan to maximize the benefits of your chiropractic treatments. Given the proper nutrition, your body has the amazing capability of keeping itself healthy. Nutrition should be individualized to meet each person’s needs. Whole food supplements along with herbal products are an important key to overall health and wellbeing. Nutritional Counseling: Embracing a wide range of approaches, nutritionbased, complementary therapies and counseling seek to alleviate physical and psychological disorders through special diets and food supplements. These will be either macronutrients (carbohydrates, fats, proteins and fiber) or micronutrients (vitamins, minerals and trace elements that cannot be manufactured in the body). Nutritional therapy/counseling often uses dietary or food supplements, which can include tablets, capsules, powders or liquids. 42

Kiwis Boost Heart Health

A

multi-center study from the University of Salamanca, in Spain, has found that consuming even one kiwi fruit (Actinidia deliciosa) per week will significantly boost cardiovascular health. The researchers tested 1,469 healthy people throughout Spain. The volunteers were given dietary questionnaires and underwent testing for cholesterol lipids and inflammatory markers for heart disease. The researchers determined that those that ate at least one kiwi fruit per week had significantly lower triglycerides and fibrinogen (a marker for inflammation), and higher HDL-cholesterol levels. Higher levels of HDL-cholesterol are associated with reduced incidence of atherosclerosis. The researchers concluded: “Consumption of at least one kiwi a week is associated with lower plasma concentrations of fibrinogen and improved plasma lipid profile in the context of a normal diet and regular exercise.

Nature’s Colors Aid Focus and Accuracy

R

esearchers from the University of Melbourne determined that taking a quick break and looking at natural colors can significantly increase attention, focus and job performance. The researchers tested 150 university students that were randomly selected to view one of two city scenes consisting of a building with and without a flowering meadow green roof. The two views were experienced as micro-breaks, a 30-second period that can be taken every 40 minutes. Both groups were tested before and after viewing the scene for sustained attention spans, along with a performance test upon completing a task. Subjects that looked at the scene with the verdant roof had significantly longer attention spans and fewer errors in doing their tasks.

Organic: In the United States, a product that has been produced in accordance with the Department of Agriculture’s National Organic Program, which sets national standards for the production, handling, and processing of organically grown agricultural products. Organic growing methods and inputs serve to enhance the ecological balance of natural systems. For example organic producers conserve soil and water, use renewable resources and grow food without the use of toxic and persistent pesticides and fertilizers. (See ams.usda.gov/NOP) Orthotics: The profession of designing, manufacturing and/or selling devices that support or help correct musculoskeletal problems, either congenital or caused by illness or injury. Examples include back braces for scoliosis and shoe inserts for fallen arches. Osteopathy / Osteopathic Physicians: Osteopathy uses generally accepted physical, pharmacological and surgical methods of diagnosis and therapy, with a strong emphasis on body mechanics and manipulative methods to detect and correct faulty structure and function, in order to restore the body’s natural healing capacities. Doctors of Osteopathy (D.O.) are fully trained and licensed according to the same standards as medical doctors (M.D.) and receive additional extensive training in the body’s structure and functions. Oxygen Therapies: Alters the body’s chemistry to help overcome disease, promote repair and improve overall function. Properly applied, oxygen may be used to treat a wide variety of conditions, including infections, circulatory problems, chronic fatigue syndrome, arthritis, allergies, cancer and multiple sclerosis. The major types of oxygen therapy used to treat illness are hyperbaric oxygen and ozone. Hydrogen peroxide therapy (oral or intravenous) can be dangerous and should be avoided. Pilates: Pilates, like yoga, yields long, lean, flexible muscles whose gracefully balanced movements readily 44

NA-NTX.com

translate into everyday activities like walking, sitting and bending. It is a structured system of small, isolated movements that demand powerful focus on every nuance of muscle action while working out on floor mats or machines. This technique emphasizes development of the torso’s abdominal power center, or core. Gentler than conventional exercises, it is excellent for overcoming injuries. Postural Integration (PI): This psychotherapy method simultaneously integrates deep tissue and breath work, body movement and awareness with emotional expression. Practitioners use gentle manipulation, bioenergetics, acupressure and Gestalt dialogue to help individuals increase their sense of emotional and physical well-being. Learn more at icpit.info. Power (Yoga): An intense style that creates heat and energy, while developing strength and flexibility. Power yoga evolved from ashtanga yoga and was developed by American Beryl Bender Birch in the early 1990s. Its flowing style requires the strength and stamina of Ashtanga, but doesn’t always follow the same sequence of postures, making it similar to Vinyasa style. Power yoga is usually performed in a heated room. Although Baron Baptiste is a name often associated with power yoga, he has developed his own method, called Baptiste Power Vinyasa yoga, which is taught only by teachers he certifies. Students who enjoy aerobics will probably favor power yoga. Prolotherapy: A rejuvenating therapy that uses injections of natural substances to stimulate collagen growth, in order to strengthen weak or damaged joints, tendons, ligaments or muscles. Often used as a natural alternative to drugs and/or surgery to treat pain syndromes, including degenerative arthritis, lower back, neck and joint pain, carpal tunnel syndrome, migraine headaches, and torn ligaments and cartilage. Qigong & Tai chi: Qigong and Tai chi combine movement, meditation and breath regulation to enhance the flow of vital energy (qi or chi, pronounced

“chee”) in the body, improve circulation and enhance immune function. Qigong traces its roots to traditional Chinese medicine. Tai chi was originally a self-defense martial art descended from qigong and employed to promote inner peace and calm. Raindrop Therapy: Based on a healing ritual of the Lakota Native Americans, in which warm fluid substances are dropped onto the spine, the intention is to relax and open the body’s energy centers. Modern raindrop therapy also blends aromatherapy, soothing heat and gentle massage. Essential aromatic oils are allowed to methodically drip onto the spine from a height of five or six inches. The oils are then gently brushed up the spine and lightly massaged over the rest of the back, followed by application of a hot compress to facilitate oil absorption and muscle relaxation. Reflexology (Zone Therapy): This is a natural healing method of pressure point massage used to relieve tension, pain and treat and cure illness by pressing on a part of a person’s head, hands, body or feet. Reflexology is based upon the principle that there are reflex points or zones that correspond to every part of the body. Correctly stimulating and applying pressure to these areas increases circulation and promotes specifically designated bodily and muscular functions. Learn more at Reflexology-USA.net. Reiki: A healing practice originated in Japan in the 1920s as a way of activating and balancing the life force present in all living things. Reiki means, “universal life force energy.” Light hand placements channel healing energies to organs and glands and work to align the body’s energy centers, or chakras. Various techniques address emotional and mental distress, chronic and acute physical problems and/or increases spiritual focus and clarity. Reiki is a valuable addition to the work of chiropractors, massage therapists, nurses and others in the West. Learn more at Reiki.org.

K

imberly Wilson is a naturopathic doctor who consults with patients of all ages for all acute and chronic conditions. She attended an AANMC credentialed medical school, earned a doctorate in naturopathic medicine (NMD) and is licensed to practice medicine in Arizona. Texas does not differentiate between licensed naturopathic doctors and those that have no formal training, have taken a short course on naturopathy or ordered an online or mail order degree. There are only a handful of trained naturopathic doctors in the state, including Wilson. She states, “Most naturopaths in Texas have not attended medical school and are not eligible to hold a license. My training has enabled me to look at the patient’s medical records and understand what has been done and what hasn’t been done. From there, I can explain to the patient all of their options, from conventional to alternative, and the science behind each option.” “Naturopathic medicine is a distinct primary health care profession, emphasizing optimal health and treatments that encourage self-healing and natural balance using modern and traditional scientific methods,” says Wilson. “Naturopathic practice includes clinical and laboratory diagnostic testing, nutritional medicine, botanical medicine, naturopathic physical medicine (including naturopathic manipulative therapy), counseling, homeopathy, Oriental medicine modalities, energetic medicine modalities and natural childbirth.”

D

r. Cecilia Yu, the owner of Synergy Balance NUCCA Chiropractic Healing Center, offers the no-popping, twisting or cracking chiropractic manual alignment of the first vertebrae endorsed by the National Upper Cervical Chiropractic Association (NUCCA), which is much more precise and gentle than regular upper cervical chiropractic. She says, “The body is an amazing self-healing organism. When it has the right nerve communication, it can heal from any trauma. The NUCCA method consists of mathematically identifying precisely where the misalignment is and fixing it with a very gentle touch. Due to the precision of the alignment, patients often hold the spinal correction for months, and perhaps years, at a time. The body can only be in healing mode when it is in alignment and free from nerve interference.” Yu states, “My passion is to find the problem that is causing the symptoms, thus fixing what others cannot. We know the body will work without fail—we just need to give it what it needs—a proper spinal alignment for nervous system function.” Synergy Balance NUCCA Chiropractic Healing Center is located in Dallas. Rolfing Structural Integration (Rolfing): Deep tissue manipulation of the myofascial system, which is composed of the muscles and the connective tissue, or fascia, by the practitioners’ hands helps restore the body’s natural alignment and sense of integration. As the body is released from old patterns and postures, its range and freedom of physical and emotional expression increases. Rolfing can help ease pain and chronic stress, enhance neurological functioning, improve posture and restore flexibility. Learn more at Rolfing.org. Shamanism: An ancient healing tradition, which believes that loss of power is the real source of illness and that all healing includes the spiritual dimension. Shamanic healing usually involves induction into an altered state of consciousness and journeying into the spirit world to regain personal power and to access the powers of nature and of teachers. Shamanic healing may be taken literally or employed symbolically, but in or out of its cultural context, the tradition can be both self-empowering and self-healing. Shiatsu: The most widely known form of acupressure, shiatsu is Japanese for “finger pressure”. The technique applies varying degrees of pressure to balance the life energy that flows through specific pathways, or meridians, in the body. Shiatsu is used to release tension and strengthen weak areas in order to facilitate even circulation, cleanse cells and improve the function of vital organs; it also may help to diagnose, prevent and relieve many chronic and acute conditions that manifest on both physical and emotional levels. A branch of shiatsu that originated in the United States, called ohashiatsu, includes meditation and exercise. Learn more at ShiatsuSociety.org and Ohashiatsu.org. Tai Chi and Qigong: Tai chi and qigong combine movement, meditation and breath regulation to enhance the flow of vital energy (qi) in the body, improve circulation and enhance immune function. Qigong traces its roots to Traditional Chinese Medicine.and is often referred to as the mother of Tai Chi. When the gentle movements of Qigong mixed with the animal style martial arts, it became Tai Chi. Both practices promote calmness and harmony to reduce stress. Thermography (Thermal Imaging): A diagnostic technique that uses an infrared camera to measure temperature variations on the surface of the body, producing images that reveal sites of inflammation and abnormal tissue growth. Inflammation is recognized as the earliest stage of nearly all major health challenges. Tui Na: A manipulative therapy integral to Traditional Chinese Medicine

review of research from the University of British Columbia tested the effects of tai chi exercise upon people with four chronic diseases: chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, heart failure, osteoarthritis and cancer. Dr. Yi-Wen Chen and his team analyzed 33 studies of more than 1,500 people that participated in tai chi. The research also tested the effects of the practice on general health, including walking speed, muscle strength, speed in standing up from a sitting position, quality of life, symptoms of depression and knee strength. The heart disease patients among the subjects showed a reduction in depression symptoms, and all shared a reduction of muscle stiffness and pain, increased speeds in both walking and standing from a sitting position and improved well-being. “Given the fact that many middle-aged and older persons have more than one chronic condition, it’s important to examine the benefits of treatment/exercise interventions across several co-existing conditions,” says Chen.

(TCM), tui na (“tui” means to push and “na” is a squeezing, lifting technique) that employs Taoist and martial arts principles to re-balance the body. Practitioners possess more than 365 hand techniques; most are variations of pressing, rubbing, waving, shaking, percussing or manipulating movements. Tui na is used to relieve arthritic joint pain, sciatica, muscle spasms and other pains in the back, neck and shoulders. It may also help ease chronic conditions such as insomnia, constipation, headaches and stress associated with tension. Learn more at Tui-Na.com. Vinyasa (Yoga): A challenging style that matches breath to movement. Vinyasa yoga poses incorporate alignment principles and are woven together in a flowing practice that is both intense and dance-like. Translated from Sanskrit, vinyasa means “without obstacle”. This style is best suited for energetic, physically fit students. V.O.C.: Volatile organic compounds; found in many paints, finishes, synthetic foams, adhesives and stains; readily evaporate to the atmosphere, where they contribute to air pollution and can be hazardous to human health. Yoga: Practical application of the ancient Indian Vedic teachings. The word yoga is derived from the Sanskrit root yuj which means “union” or “to join”, and refers to the joining of a person’s physical, mental and spiritual elements. The goal of good health is accomplished through a combination of techniques, including physical exercises called asanas (or postures), controlled breathing, relaxation, meditation and diet and nutrition. Although yoga is not meant to cure specific diseases or ailments directly, it has been found effective in treating many physical ailments. Individuals of every age and physical condition can benefit from 48

the regular practice of yoga, which has been proved to enhance flexibility, strength, stamina and concentration. Using a combination of asanas, or postures, and breathing techniques, yoga works to induce deep relaxation and reduce stress, tone the body and organs, increase vitality and improve circulation and energy flow. Uplifting and meditative, yoga can be applied as a spiritual practice, as well. Yoga Therapy: The application of yoga principles, methods and techniques to empower individuals to progress towards greater health and freedom from disease, represents a first effort to integrate traditional yogic concepts and techniques with Western medical and psychological knowledge. Yoga therapy aims at the holistic treatment of various kinds of psychological or somatic dysfunctions, ranging from emotional distress to back problems. Zero Balancing: Developed by Fritz Smith, a doctor, osteopath and acupuncturist, zero balancing addresses the relationship between energy and structures of the body. Practitioners use moderate finger pressure and gentle traction on areas of tension in the bones, joints and soft tissue to create fulcrums, or points of balance, around which the body can relax and reorganize. The goal is to clear blocks in the body’s energy flow, amplify vitality and contribute to better postural alignment. Learn more at ZeroBalancing.com. epresentatives from nearly every country on Earth gathered in Paris for the 2015 United Nations (UN) Climate Change Conference. UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon called the Paris Agreement a triumph for people, the planet and multilateralism. The signing ceremony is set for Earth Day, April 22, at UN headquarters, in New York City. For the first time, every country has pledged to curb their emissions, strengthen resilience to related impacts and act internationally and domestically to address climate change. Other key elements aimed at achieving a state of climate neutrality—having a zero carbon footprint—before the century’s end include transparency, accountability and a plan for developed countries to support climate action in developing countries. “A big part of the Paris agreement focuses on reduced use of gas, coal and oil, but there is also a focus on preserving trees and expanding forests,” says Earth Day Network (EDN) spokesperson Timothy McHugh, referring to this year’s Earth Day theme of Trees for Earth. This year also kicks off a fouryear countdown to the environmental campaign’s 50th anniversary on Earth Day 2020. “By that mark, we hope to

have planted 7.8 billion trees—approximately one tree for every person on the planet. Trees are vitally important because they soak up carbon and clean the air,” McHugh explains. In addition to countering climate change and pollution, EDN’s global tree planting seeks to support communities and local economies, protect biodiversity and inspire environmental stewardship. From global leaders convening at the UN to people participating in community events close to home, billions of the world’s citizens will celebrate our precious home planet this year. To join the worldwide observance, find an event online at EarthDay.org or participate in one or more of the local events listed here. The Hidden Deficiency Having the proper amount of iodine in our system at all times is critical to overall health, yet the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition finds that iodine deficiency is increasing drastically in light of an increasingly anemic national diet of unpronounceable additives and secret, unlabeled ingredients. This deficit now affects nearly three-quarters of the population.

Causes of Iodine Deficiency

Radiation

Almost everyone is routinely exposed to iodine-depleting radiation

Low-Sodium Diets

Overuse of zero-nutrient salt substitutes in foods leads to iodine depletion

Iodized Table Salt

Iodized salt may slowly lose its iodine content by exposure to air

Bromine

A toxic chemical found in baked goods overrides iodine's ability to aid thyroid

Iodine-Depleted Soil Poor farming techniques have led to declined levels of iodine in soil

A Growing Epidemic Symptoms range from extreme fatigue and weight gain to depression, carpal tunnel syndrome, high blood pressure, fibrocystic breasts and skin and hair problems. This lack of essential iodine can also cause infertility, joint pain, heart disease and stroke. Low iodine levels also have been associated with breast and thyroid cancers; and in children, intellectual disability, deafness, attention deficient hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and impaired growth, according to studies by Boston University and the French National Academy of Medicine.

What to Do The easy solution is taking the right kind of iodine in the right dosage to rebalance thyroid function and restore health to the whole body.
