Facts About Learning and Memory

A developmental writing disorder may result from problems in the skills areas of vocabulary, hand movement, and memory. For example, a child with writing disability, particularly an expressive language disorder, might be unable to compose complete, grammatical sentences. Finally, children with difficulties recognizing numbers and symbols, memorizing facts, aligning numbers, and understanding concepts like decimals and fractions suffer from a developmental arithmetic disorder, also called dyscalculia. Problems with numbers or basic concepts are likely to show up early. Disabilities that appear in the later grades are more often tied to problems in reasoning. ■Learn more about the brain’s role in learning and memory Search the Internet for amnesia, olfactory memory, and dyslexia.
