Visual artist introduce ‘Salt River’ project Madelaine Laubscher A visual artist and a member of the Topnaar community residing at the Kuiseb River, Mr Sebedeus Swartbooi (37), is currently working on a project involving arts and crafts in order to attract more tourists to the well-known Topnaar community and Kuiseb River. Sebedeus started working at the Gobabeb Training Centre in 2009, working closely with the tourists and that is where his passion for arts and crafts was born while he was working as a tour

guide. He mentioned the need for drawing attention to the Topnaar community as they have a lot to offer the tourists with regard to arts and crafts. He also mentioned that it is a good means of

income for the Topnaar community as well. “The idea behind my art began in 2009 and this year I resigned from the Gobabeb training centre in order to start a project known as the Salt River Project. We will be receiving funding from the rural constituency of Walvis Bay in order to start a craft shop. The project will be running for three years and if it is as successful as we hope, the craft shop will be opened. A company known as Acacia Creations cc has recently been registered,” he said. According to Sebedeus, the Topnaar Traditional Authority sponsored N$1 000 in order to register Acacia Creations cc as a business and the arts and crafts project will resort
