In 1995, in search of some adventure, founder Sam Brummitt flew to Kathmandu, Nepal with a round the world ticket. After an inspirational trek to Mount Everest base camp, followed by 6 months circumnavigating the Indian Subcontinent on re-conditioned ex Indian Army Enfield Bullets and sleeping under the stars at the side of the road, the idea for the business slowly developed. Fuelled by a conversation one day in Rajasthan with the owner of a small textile business and now lifelong friend and a key supplier, Ganpat suggested Sam came back home and started a business.

Orami Recycled Fabric Jewellery H A N D M A D E & R E C YC L E D This jewellery is lovingly produced by a company founded in 2003 by a young socially motivated entrepreneur named Shaina. Her vision was to help women in urban villages with low incomes and who needed to work from home. Their mission statement is “To empower women by providing fair wages and creating beautiful, handmade, high quality and unique accessories.� Their creative young designers bring flair and sketch up new lines which appeal to international buyers. The company helps to support the education of the women in their group and also provide monetary support for medical emergencies when needed. Recycling & Respecting the Environment Recycled and environmentally friendly products make up a large proportion of the ranges we have to offer at Namaste. Wherever possible we try to ensure that our suppliers can source the raw materials they use from recycled sources, and we are proud to say that many of our suppliers are now specialising in green products. We make sure to discuss with our suppliers their environmental policies and their use of recycled materials, while encouraging them to use both recycled and environmentally friendly packaging materials. We are also trying to do our bit for the environment by minimising our use of packaging materials and by re-using everything we can.

Himalayan Salt Lamps N AT U R A L R O C K S A LT This is our collection of salt Lamps from traditional Himalayan rock salt. There are 4 new additions to the range including a new 1-2kg size and also best selling sizes are now available in white too. H ANDMADE I N PAKI STAN
Made from solid blocks of Natural Himalayan rock salt with a wooden base. Salt lamps are believed by some to have positive therapeutic health & well-being qualities. We are buying the lamps from Pakistan in partnership with one of our customers who have family connections in Pakistan. They have a factory where the lamps are constructed from the stone which is mined in the mountains. We have been assured that the factory conditions are good and that all health, safety and social compliance policies are in place and that all government regulations are adhered to. However, we have not visited the factory and cannot claim that these are Fair Trade products. We will certainly be very ethical in our dealings with our supplier and we would hope that over time we can achieve Fair Trade status for these lamps. Each lamp comes supplied with UK standard wiring and plug.

These beautiful craft made paper products are made by a long established family based business in Northern India. Making Felt Mice – The Process • New Zealand wool is imported in its raw form. Nepal’s infrastructure can’t sustain a wool industry of its own and home sourced Yak wool is too coarse for making felt.
• Each mouse section is made at an individual work station in the factory.
• The wool is dyed at a separate facility and either brushed, spun into yarn or boiled and brushed to make into felt sheets.
• The different sections are then sewn together in the stitching department. Other decorative elements and the string to hang the mouse from are sewn on too.
• The rolling is repeated and the finished article placed in the strong Himalayan sun to dry.
• The mice are packaged ready for export to Namaste in the UK. They will travel by ship, as it is more economical and better for the environment than flying.
And so, the mice arrive in England waiting for new homes in time for Christmas…

Meet the Makers - Christmas Mice Makers, Nepal Our popular handmade felt mice are sourced from Kathmandu, Nepal, where they are skilfully constructed by artisans like Lalita (pictured). Lalita is employed by our newest felt supplier who are a member of Fair Trade USA. Having mastered the art of stitching these intricate little creatures, Lalita has progressed over 10 years to mentoring her co-workers and over-seeing order production. It’s a world away from her previous job at another company. There her role was to package large items; physically demanding work for which Lalita received poor wages. Today, Lalita is far happier performing lighter work for a fair-trade company. Benefits include a workers’ co-operative, Insurance plus 2% cash back and higher wages paid as a base salary. Then there’s the added advantage of living close to the factory, making more leisure time available to spend with family. Lalita’s husband is the Manager of an electrical shop and their combined wages meet basic living costs for the family, as well as supporting their daughter’s college studies for a Bachelors in Business Administration. It’s good to know, the higher wages and better conditions provided by supporting a fair-trade company will empower the family to further improve prospects for next generations!

Namaste Fair Trade Policy Summary We are a small company with a strong ethical policy that is based upon the belief that the best way to reduce poverty in the developing world is through trade. We are not perfect but we are honest and our aim is to improve our own goals, aspirations and achievements as we develop in tandem with our producer partners. Namaste is recognised by BAFTS, the British Association for Fair Trade Shops and Suppliers as a Fair Trade importer.
Mutually beneficial long term trade We look to buy from small scale producers who use largely natural materials and traditional techniques to produce interesting and inherently beautiful articles. We believe that the best way to help disadvantaged producers is to work with them in partnership through mutually beneficial and long term trade. We have helped over 100 producers to grow and develop with us since we started trading 20 years ago.
Fair Trade Organisations Some of our suppliers are members of the World Fair Trade Organization (WFTO) and some are members of their appropriate National Fair Trade Organization. We encourage and if appropriate; help our suppliers to seek formal fair trade recognition. In Thailand and Indonesia we deal with many very small scale artisan producers who do not wish to or do not have the ability to become recognised Fair Trade producers. We believe very strongly that these are the sort of very small scale producers who really do need our help. It is what Fair Trade should be about and we are proud to help with or without them having formal fair trade recognition.

Why do we think it is Fair Trade? The WFTO has 10 principles that Fair Trade organisations must follow. We follow these principles and regularly review our procedures and achievements according to these principles:1.
Namaste seeks to work with disadvantaged and marginalized producers and to develop business with them to help them become financially stronger and more independent. We try to buy craft products that reflect the culture and tradition and that utilize the skills of the supplier. We also buy from some larger producers if we are happy that they are also adhering to the principles of Fair Trade. Many larger suppliers are able to provide better job security, facilities and benefits for their workers and many are able to support community or charitable projects.
2. We are accountable to BAFTS and provide transparent information about our producers and trading practices to BAFTS as part of our ongoing membership renewal. We make Fair Trade Point of Sale information available for our customers. 3. We always follow Fair Trading practices. This involves paying an advance when asked for or required to allow the producer to buy raw materials and start making the order without getting into financial difficulty. We never ask for or take credit terms from any of our suppliers. When the goods are shipped, they have been paid for in full. We never make exceptions to these rules and never have. If suppliers need money early for particular reasons we will always try and help them. 4. We discuss pricing with our suppliers in an open and honest way. We seek to pay a price that fairly reflects the value of the product, that allows it to sell successfully and that allows the workers to earn fair wages. We do our best to ensure that wages paid are at or above local expectations and in accordance with national laws.
5. We do our utmost to ensure that no children or forced labour is involved in the production of Namaste products. We ensure that no children under the age of 16 are involved in factory based production for Namaste. Many items are produced by home workers, which provides useful additional income whilst allowing them to look after their homes and families. 6. Namaste suppliers commit to non-discrimination, gender equality and freedom of association. 7. Wherever possible we visit suppliers ourselves to make sure that producers have good working conditions. We also have agents who make visits and act on our behalf. All suppliers must first complete a long and detailed questionnaire relating to their Fair Trade policies. 8. We look for long term relationships with our suppliers and provide them with designs and ideas to benefit their business and keep the orders flowing. By providing repeat orders, advance payments and by making a commitment never to cancel or unduly delay orders helps our suppliers to grow and develop capacity. 9. Namaste promotes Fair Trade through our activities and literature. 10. We are using more and more recycled or environmentally friendly materials in our products which now make up a very large percentage of our product range. Our suppliers are encouraged to respect their environment and to have written and audited environmental policies.
