A YEAR IN REVIEW 2020-2021


MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL Once again it is time to present to you our Digital Yearbook as a record of the academic year 2020-21.

‫ﺣﺎن اﻟﻮﻗﺖ ﻟﺘﻘﺪﻳﻢ اﻟﻜﺘﺎب اﻟﺴﻨﻮي اﻟﺮﻗﻤﻲ اﻟﺨﺎص ﺑﻨﺎ ﻟﻠﻌﺎم اﻟﺪراﺳﻲ‬ 2020-2022

Last year, we found ourselves in the unprecedented situation of moving our school online as the COVID-19 pandemic took hold. It was therefore with great joy that we were able to welcome students back to our campus in August 2020, after working and studying from home for so long. Although we were only able to have a percentage of students in school at any one time, it was wonderful to see (and hear) the noise of children and young people back in school at last!

‫ وﺟﺪﻧﺎ أﻧﻔﺴﻨﺎ ﻓﻲ ﻣﻮﻗﻒ ﻏﻴﺮ ﻣﺴﺒﻮق ﻻﻧﺘﻘﺎل اﻟﺘﻌﻠﻴﻢ‬،‫ﻓﻲ اﻟﻌﺎم اﻟﻤﺎﺿﻲ‬ ‫ ﻟﺬﻟﻚ ﻛﺎن ﻣﻦ دواﻋﻲ ﺳﺮورﻧﺎ أﻧﻨﺎ‬.‫ﻋﺒﺮ اﻹﻧﺘﺮﻧﺖ ﻣﻊ اﻧﺘﺸﺎر ﺟﺎﺋﺤﺔ ﻛﻮروﻧﺎ‬ ‫ﺗﻤﻜﻨﺎ ﻣﻦ اﻟﺘﺮﺣﻴﺐ ﺑﺎﻟﻄﻼب ﻣﺮة أﺧﺮى ﻓﻲ اﻟﺤﺮم اﻟﻤﺪرﺳﻲ ﻓﻲ‬ ‫ ﻋﻠﻰ‬.‫ ﺑﻌﺪ اﻟﻌﻤﻞ واﻟﺪراﺳﺔ ﻣﻦ اﻟﻤﻨﺰل ﻟﻔﺘﺮة ﻃﻮﻳﻠﺔ‬،‫أﻏﺴﻄﺲ اﻟﻤﺎﺿﻲ‬ ‫ ﻓﻘﺪ ﻛﺎن‬، ‫اﻟﺮﻏﻢ ﻣﻦ إﻟﺘﺰاﻣﻨﺎ ﻧﺴﺒﺔ ﻣﺌﻮﻳﺔ ﻣﻌﻴﻨﺔ ﻣﻦ اﻟﻄﻼب ﻓﻲ اﻟﻤﺪرﺳﺔ‬ ‫ﻣﻦ اﻟﺮاﺋﻊ رؤﻳﺔ )وﺳﻤﺎع( ﺿﺠﻴﺞ اﻷﻃﻔﺎل واﻟﺸﺒﺎب ﻓﻲ اﻟﻤﺪرﺳﺔ!ا‬

This year, our school community has experienced many changes, switching rapidly between virtual learning and face-to-face experiences, sometimes at very short notice. Nevertheless, our staff, students and families managed to remain cheerful, flexible and resilient throughout. One of the highlights of the year for me has been standing at the gate each morning, welcoming your children into school. I could tell from their expressions that many children really appreciated the chance to be here in person and spend time with their friends whenever possible. Sometimes it is only when we lose something that we learn to value it and many of us now have a new-found understanding of the social importance of our school. As parents, you have had to be teacher, learning assistant, coach, mentor, and of course mum or dad! This has been an incredibly challenging year for us all but we can now celebrate having made it to the end. Recent developments with vaccinations and falling numbers of cases here in Qatar give us reason for optimism and although we may not be ‘back to normal’ quite yet, we are probably on our way. Whilst we cannot yet know what the next academic year will hold for us all, I do hope you will look back on 2020-21 with at least some happy memories. I hope that this yearbook will serve as a reminder of the good times we had here at NAISAK, even through difficult times.

EARLY YEARS This year Foundation Stage have been busy, and despite many changes throughout the year the children have had lots of fun and been very resilient adapting to change. We have made lots of new friends and become confident members of the school. The children are always excited and ready for a new challenge each day.

‫ وﻋﻠﻰ اﻟﺮﻏﻢ ﻣﻦ‬،‫ﻛﺎﻧﺖ اﻟﻤﺮﺣﻠﺔ اﻟﺘﺄﺳﻴﺴﻴﺔ ﻓﻲ ﻫﺬا اﻟﻌﺎم ﻣﺰدﺣﻤﺔ‬ ‫ ﻓﻘﺪ اﺳﺘﻤﺘﻊ اﻷﻃﻔﺎل ﺑﺎﻟﻜﺜﻴﺮ ﻣﻦ‬،‫اﻟﻌﺪﻳﺪ ﻣﻦ اﻟﺘﻐﻴﻴﺮات ﻋﻠﻰ ﻣﺪار اﻟﻌﺎم‬ ‫ ﻟﻘﺪ ﻛﻮﻧﺎ اﻟﻜﺜﻴﺮ ﻣﻦ‬.‫اﻟﻤﺮح وﻛﺎﻧﻮا ﻣﺮﻧﻴﻦ ﻟﻠﻐﺎﻳﺔ ﻓﻲ اﻟﺘﻜﻴﻒ ﻣﻊ اﻟﺘﻐﻴﻴﺮ‬ ‫ اﻷﻃﻔﺎل داﺋﻤًﺎ‬.‫اﻷﺻﺪﻗﺎء اﻟﺠﺪد وأﺻﺒﺤﻨﺎ أﻋﻀﺎء واﺛﻘﻴﻦ ﻣﻦ اﻟﻤﺪرﺳﺔ‬ ‫ﻣﺘﺤﻤﺴﻮن وﻣﺴﺘﻌﺪون ﻟﺘﺤﺪﻳﺎت ﺟﺪﻳﺪة ﻛﻞ ﻳﻮم‬

Foundation One have taken part in many wonderful adventures throughout the year. They have enjoyed exploring the outdoor learning environment and especially loved engaging in water play, making water slides out of pipes and getting messy in the mud! We had great fun getting wet during our splash sessions and enjoyed many sensory experiences.

‫ﺷﺎرﻛﺖ ﻣﺮﺣﻠﺔ اﻟﺮوﺿﺔ ﻓﻲ اﻟﻌﺪﻳﺪ ﻣﻦ اﻟﻤﻐﺎﻣﺮات اﻟﺮاﺋﻌﺔ ﻋﻠﻰ ﻣﺪار‬ ‫ ﻟﻘﺪ اﺳﺘﻤﺘﻌﻮا ﺑﺎﺳﺘﻜﺸﺎف ﺑﻴﺌﺔ اﻟﺘﻌﻠﻢ ﻓﻲ اﻟﻬﻮاء اﻟﻄﻠﻖ وأﺣﺒﻮا‬.‫اﻟﻌﺎم‬ ‫ وﺟﻌﻞ اﻻﻧﺰﻻق اﻟﻤﺎﺋﻲ ﻣﻦ‬،‫ﺑﺸﻜﻞ ﺧﺎص اﻻﻧﺨﺮاط ﻓﻲ اﻟﻠﻌﺐ اﻟﻤﺎﺋﻲ‬ ‫اﻷﻧﺎﺑﻴﺐ واﻟﺘﺴﺒﺐ ﻓﻲ اﻟﻔﻮﺿﻰ ﻓﻲ اﻟﻮﺣﻞ! ﻟﻘﺪ اﺳﺘﻤﺘﻌﻨﺎ ﻛﺜﻴﺮًا ﺑﺎﻟﺘﺒﻠﻞ‬ ‫ واﺳﺘﻤﺘﻌﻨﺎ ﺑﺎﻟﻌﺪﻳﺪ ﻣﻦ اﻟﺘﺠﺎرب اﻟﺤﺴﻴﺔ‬،‫أﺛﻨﺎء ﺟﻠﺴﺎت اﻟﺮش ﺑﺎﻟﻤﺎء‬

The children have gained confidence using climbing equipment and love taking risks and moving in different ways. We put our new skills to the test and enjoyed our own mini sports day, where the children had fun working as a team and experiencing a little bit of competition! We have learnt to express ourselves through art and music this year, and we especially enjoyed creating our own Kandinsky inspired artwork.

‫اﻛﺘﺴﺐ اﻷﻃﻔﺎل اﻟﺜﻘﺔ ﻓﻲ اﺳﺘﺨﺪام ﻣﻌﺪات اﻟﺘﺴﻠﻖ وﻳﺤﺒﻮن اﻟﻤﺨﺎﻃﺮة‬ ‫ وﺿﻌﻨﺎ ﻣﻬﺎراﺗﻨﺎ اﻟﺠﺪﻳﺪة ﻋﻠﻰ اﻟﻤﺤﻚ واﺳﺘﻤﺘﻌﻨﺎ‬.‫واﻟﺘﺤﺮك ﺑﻄﺮق ﻣﺨﺘﻠﻔﺔ‬ ‫ ﺣﻴﺚ اﺳﺘﻤﺘﻊ اﻷﻃﻔﺎل ﺑﺎﻟﻌﻤﻞ ﻛﻔﺮﻳﻖ وﺧﻮﺿﻨﺎ‬،‫ﺑﻴﻮﻣﻨﺎ اﻟﺮﻳﺎﺿﻲ اﻟﻤﺼﻐﺮ‬ ‫اﻟﻘﻠﻴﻞ ﻣﻦ اﻟﻤﻨﺎﻓﺴﺔ! ﻟﻘﺪ ﺗﻌﻠﻤﻨﺎ أن ﻧﻌﺒﺮ ﻋﻦ أﻧﻔﺴﻨﺎ ﻣﻦ ﺧﻼل اﻟﻔﻦ‬ ‫ وﻗﺪ اﺳﺘﻤﺘﻌﻨﺎ ﺑﺸﻜﻞ ﺧﺎص ﺑﺈﻧﺸﺎء أﻋﻤﺎﻟﻨﺎ اﻟﻔﻨﻴﺔ‬،‫واﻟﻤﻮﺳﻴﻘﻰ ﻫﺬا اﻟﻌﺎم‬ ‫اﻟﻤﺴﺘﻮﺣﺎة ﻣﻦ ﻛﺎﻧﺪﻳﻨﺴﻜﻲ‬

Teamwork has been a huge part of our learning this year, and the children have used their imagination to create some incredible structures such as a huge castle and a pirate ship using a range of materials. We have also enjoyed learning new ways to keep fit through yoga, dance, and healthy eating.

‫ وﻗﺪ اﺳﺘﺨﺪم‬،‫ﻛﺎن اﻟﻌﻤﻞ اﻟﺠﻤﺎﻋﻲ ﺟﺰء ﻛﺒﻴﺮ ﻣﻦ ﺗﻌﻠﻤﻨﺎ ﻫﺬا اﻟﻌﺎم‬ ‫اﻷﻃﻔﺎل ﺧﻴﺎﻟﻬﻢ ﻹﻧﺸﺎء ﺑﻌﺾ اﻟﻬﻴﺎﻛﻞ اﻟﺮاﺋﻌﺔ ﻣﺜﻞ اﻟﻘﻠﻌﺔ اﻟﻀﺨﻤﺔ‬ ‫ ﻟﻘﺪ اﺳﺘﻤﺘﻌﻨﺎ أﻳﻀﴼ‬.‫وﺳﻔﻴﻨﺔ اﻟﻘﺮاﺻﻨﺔ ﺑﺎﺳﺘﺨﺪام ﻣﺠﻤﻮﻋﺔ ﻣﻦ اﻟﻤﻮاد‬ ‫ﺑﺘﻌﻠﻢ ﻃﺮق ﺟﺪﻳﺪة ﻟﻠﺤﻔﺎظ ﻋﻠﻰ ﻟﻴﺎﻗﺘﻨﺎ ﻣﻦ ﺧﻼل اﻟﻴﻮﻏﺎ واﻟﺮﻗﺺ واﻷﻛﻞ‬ ‫اﻟﺼﺤﻲ‬

Foundation Two have been on many wonderful adventures throughout the year. They enjoyed going to space to explore the planets, and put their building and creative skills to the test and made their own rockets. They even worked together to make their very own space station! The children travelled back in time and looked at the prehistoric age, exploring dinosaurs and making their own cave markings. We travelled across the African savannah when we learnt our story “Going on a Lion Hunt”.

‫ﺷﺎرﻛﺖ ﻣﺮﺣﻠﺔ اﻟﺘﻤﻬﻴﺪي ﻓﻲ اﻟﻌﺪﻳﺪ ﻣﻦ اﻟﻤﻐﺎﻣﺮات اﻟﺮاﺋﻌﺔ ﻋﻠﻰ ﻣﺪار‬ ،‫ ﻟﻘﺪ اﺳﺘﻤﺘﻌﻮا ﺑﺎﻟﺬﻫﺎب إﻟﻰ اﻟﻔﻀﺎء ﻻﺳﺘﻜﺸﺎف اﻟﻜﻮاﻛﺐ‬.‫اﻟﻌﺎم‬ ‫ووﺿﻌﻮا ﻣﻬﺎراﺗﻬﻢ ﻓﻲ اﻟﺒﻨﺎء واﻹﺑﺪاع ﻋﻠﻰ اﻟﻤﺤﻚ وﺻﻨﻌﻮا ﺻﻮارﻳﺨﻬﻢ‬ ‫ ﻟﻘﺪ ﻋﻤﻠﻮا ﻣﻌﴼ ﻹﻧﺸﺎء ﻣﺤﻄﺔ ﻓﻀﺎﺋﻴﺔ ﺧﺎﺻﺔ ﺑﻬﻢ! ﺳﺎﻓﺮ‬.‫اﻟﺨﺎﺻﺔ‬ ،‫اﻷﻃﻔﺎل ﺑﺎﻟﺰﻣﻦ إﻟﻰ اﻟﻮراء وﻧﻈﺮوا إﻟﻰ ﻋﺼﺮ ﻣﺎ ﻗﺒﻞ اﻟﺘﺎرﻳﺦ‬ ‫ ﺳﺎﻓﺮﻧﺎ‬.‫واﺳﺘﻜﺸﻔﻮا اﻟﺪﻳﻨﺎﺻﻮرات ووﺿﻌﻮا ﻋﻼﻣﺎت اﻟﻜﻬﻮف اﻟﺨﺎﺻﺔ ﺑﻬﻢ‬ ‫ﻋﺒﺮ اﻟﺴﺎﻓﺎﻧﺎ اﻷﻓﺮﻳﻘﻴﺔ ﻋﻨﺪﻣﺎ ﻋﻠﻤﻨﺎ ﻗﺼﺘﻨﺎ‬ "‫"اﻟﺬﻫﺎب ﻓﻲ رﺣﻠﺔ ﺻﻴﺪ اﻷﺳﺪ‬

The children used their tech skills and went on a virtual animal safari using iPads and QR codes. We had a wonderful time exploring the customs and traditions of Ramadan through the book Golden Domes and Silver Lanterns. The children had great fun creating their own villains, and made Wanted posters to put around school; hopefully they managed to capture them! We also used our imagination to create and act out our own stories using props and costumes. The children have had a wonderful year and we are all very proud of their achievements. MESSAGE FROM THE HEAD OF PRIMARY As I reflect on my first year at NAISAK, I feel quite confident to say that this will be one year that I will never forget. As a school and a community, we have all come together to combat the challenges of Covid-19 and despite the numerous hurdles along the way, our students have not only returned to school, but they have returned with renewed determination, confidence and resilience. I find this quite remarkable given how much uncertainty there has been in the world during recent times. As this year draws to an end, we should look back and celebrate the accomplishments of our students. Our youngest learners in FS1 and FS2 have charmed our teachers with their determination and love of learning. Their inquisitive minds have taken them on many journeys of discovery, and they have even successfully navigated an online world of teaching, no mean feat at their tender age. Our children in Years 1-6 have thoroughly enjoyed a new and vibrant creative curriculum. Students have explored the magical world of toys, travelled back in time to Ancient Egypt and even spent time in Space, to name but a few. They have been exposed to many new concepts and have been allowed to push the limits of their learning across many different subjects and disciplines. It has also been wonderful to see so many of our students asking meaningful questions demonstrating their critical thinking and their love for learning. I would also like to take this opportunity to celebrate our Year 6 students, as they transition from Primary to Secondary. You should all be exceptionally proud of yourselves. Your continued commitment, passion and positivity has been noted by all of your teachers, and whether you are joining Year 7 here at NAISAK or starting in a new school, we wish you all the very best. Finally, I wish to express my gratitude to all of our teachers and LAs who over the course of the year have gone above and beyond, to ensure our students have been able to continue their studies both at school and online. They have been absolutely brilliant, in very difficult circumstances and it has been a genuine privilege to work with such a talented group of teachers and learning assistants. To the entire NAISAK community, thank you for all that you have done this year and I wish you all a wonderful summer wherever you go.

YEAR 1 This year has been an incredible year of changes for our Year 1 children, and they have all coped exceptionally well with everything they have encountered.

Both the teachers and children have loved being in school for face-to-face lessons and we have all embraced the new way of learning and interacting online.

Throughout the course of the year the children have learnt many new and exciting things. We have acquired new skills in English, Maths, STEAM, Science, Art, Qatar History, Music and PE, and experienced wonderful activities through our exciting topics.

The Magic Toy Maker: During this topic we learnt about the story of The Old Toy Room and used our imaginations to go on an adventure with the characters. We also learnt about the history of toys, how different toys are made, and which materials toys are made from. We also interviewed our parents to find out which toys they enjoyed playing with when they were children. Seeing the Light: This topic taught us about natural and man-made light sources. In the story of How to Catch a Star, we met a little boy who tried his best to catch a star. We also learnt many interesting facts about stars and wrote instructions on how to catch a star. We created story maps and memorized our own version, explaining how stars are formed. Who Am I: Through the story of Monkey Puzzle, we have learnt about rhyming words, adjectives and how to describe our emotions and feelings. In this story the little monkey loses his mother and Butterfly tries to help him find her. We used this context to develop our ability to describe something that we may have lost and how that might have made us feel. We were able to use the rhyming words to help us make predictions about what might happen next in the story. During Qatar history lessons, we also enjoyed learning about the history of pearling in Qatar and how pearls are formed. During our STEAM sessions we made our own version of a pearl. We also learnt about the fun and unusual animals that live here in Qatar. This year has been a wonderful, fun and unusual year of learning and growing for our Year 1 students. The Year 1 team are immensely proud of how much our children have achieved. Please join me in wishing all our Year 1 cohort a huge CONGRATULATIONS!! YEAR 2 What an amazing year to look back on for Year 2. We are all so proud of the children’s resilience, hard work and determination during this unique year of blended learning. Year 2 have learnt about many interesting topics this year. The children particularly enjoyed learning all about pirates during our ‘Treasure Island’ topic. They studied maps, learnt about how to be a good pirate, and investigated objects that float and sink! To finish, they all wrote a fantastic letter from the perspective of a pirate who was stranded on a desert island, asking for help! Later in the year, the children learnt about two significant people of the past: Florence Nightingale and Neil Armstrong. They were horrified when learning about how disgustingly dirty hospitals used to be, and were excited to have a virtual meeting with Neil Armstrong. They asked him lots of interesting questions about what life was like as an astronaut. The children learnt about why these two people were so significant, and how they impacted on the progression of medicine and space travel. More recently, the children have found out about an important historical event: the Great Fire of London. They have learnt about the causes of the fire, why it spread so easily, and how the fire was eventually stopped. The children discussed the importance of choosing the correct material for a house to be made from, and why it is so important to have firefighters today. They considered how it would have felt to see the Great Fire at the time, and how we know that it happened a long time ago. They enjoyed making their own Tudor houses and town and carefully considered their designs. This year has had many challenges, but the children have never failed to amaze us with their adaptability and eagerness to learn; whether that be at school or at home. The Year 2 teachers are proud of all of your efforts and progress this year and want to thank you for making it such an enjoyable, motivated learning environment. We wish you a wonderful and well-deserved summer break and know that you will continue with your successes in Year 3. YEAR 3 Wow Year 3, what a strange year it has been! This is the first time we have had blended learning and you have all been superstars with adapting to all the changes that have come your way. Even though COVID-19 has limited your time in the classroom, we have still managed to have so much fun!

‫ وﻗﺪ‬،‫ﻳﺎ ﻟﻪ ﻣﻦ ﻋﺎم ﻏﺮﻳﺐ! ﻫﺬه ﻫﻲ اﻟﻤﺮة اﻷوﻟﻰ اﻟﺘﻲ ﻧﺠﺮي ﻓﻴﻬﺎ اﻟﺘﻌﻠﻢ اﻟﻤﺪﻣﺞ‬ ‫ﻛﻨﺘﻢ ﺟﻤﻴﻌًﺎ ﻧﺠﻮﻣًﺎ ﻣﺘﻤﻴﺰﻳﻦ ﻓﻲ اﻟﺘﻜﻴﻒ ﻣﻊ ﺟﻤﻴﻊ اﻟﺘﻐﻴﻴﺮات اﻟﺘﻲ ﻃﺮأت ﻓﻲ‬ ‫ إﻻ‬،‫ ﻋﻠﻰ اﻟﺮﻏﻢ ﻣﻦ أن ﺟﺎﺋﺤﺔ ﻛﻮروﻧﺎ ﻗﺪ ﺣﺪت ﻣﻦ وﻗﺘﻜﻢ ﻓﻲ اﻟﻔﺼﻞ‬.‫ﻃﺮﻳﻘﻜﻢ‬ ‫أﻧﻨﺎ ﻣﺎ زﻟﻨﺎ ﻧﺘﻤﺘﻊ ﺑﺎﻟﻜﺜﻴﺮ ﻣﻦ اﻟﻤﺮح!ا‬

‫ا‬.‫دﻋﻮﻧﺎ ﻧﻠﻘﻲ ﻧﻈﺮة ﻋﻠﻰ ﺑﻌﺾ ﻟﺤﻈﺎت اﻟﺘﻌﻠﻢ واﻟﻤﻔﻀﻠﺔ ﻟﺪﻳﻨﺎ‬

I’m sure none of you have forgotten about the best topic in the world, CHOCOLATE! I don’t think I have eaten so much chocolate before in such a short space of time! We tasted different kinds of chocolate but for me, the funniest moment was when you all tried the chili chocolate! Some of you did not like that at all! You all had a go at designing a new chocolate bar using different flavours and toppings. They all looked delicious, except for the one that Abdulla dropped on the floor on his way to put it in the fridge! Another topic we all really enjoyed was rainforests. You decorated the classrooms beautifully, but then one day you all came into school and realised they had been destroyed! It was the teachers who had done this, but we wanted to teach you about what really happens in the rainforest: deforestation. You watched lots of video clips and saw many photos of how our precious, beautiful rainforests are being destroyed so we decided to create a campaign. It was amazing to see you all present these in front of your peers as it was not an easy thing to do. We have also become paleontologists during our dinosaur topic and learnt how fossils were made using bread and gummy sweets to show the cast and mold process. In Olympics, you designed your own Olympic park and for your Stone Age topic, you created shelters. I know so many of you enjoy PE lessons. It was a shame that we could not have PE like we normally do but I know that the PE department created some fun activities for you. You created skeleton artwork to help you learn the different bones, and a diagram of the human mouth to help you identify the different types of teeth. Being taught PE through Microsoft Teams was quiet an experience! As a year group, we have also enjoyed many maths, writing and phonics lessons. It has been wonderful to see you grow as a learner and develop new skills in these areas. I have read some brilliant diary entries, newspaper reports and stories and I have been very impressed with how well you have answered questions on fractions, measurement and shape. Well done Year 3, I am very proud of what you have managed to achieve in such a whirlwind year. It has not been easy, but you have coped extremely well and worked really hard. I hope you continue to do well in school, and I wish you all the best for your journey into Year 4.

YEAR 4 This year has been an ever-changing wave of working virtually from home and embarking on new learning in school. A success for the year group this year has been the ever-present determination to keep coming back to school and students picking up from where they left off. This attitude has been something the Year 4 team are particularly proud of. Every class has had their funny moment at some point this year, but Salma’s moment of bravery when removing a spider from Ms Gardiner’s desk is something that made quite a few of us laugh across the year group. Students in 4 Purple witnessed this act of heroism, and 4 Blue have been hearing about it ever since! We are not quite sure what Ms Gardiner will do without Salma next year. A Year 4 science lesson that investigated the viscosity of liquids was planned to take about an hour, measuring how long would it take for four liquids to flow from one end of the table to the other. Lydia had the task of timing the honey and recording it for the rest of us to add to our data. After taking over 3 hours, and Lydia having to work around a trail of honey in a maths lesson, she screamed at the top of her voice, “THE HONEY HAS DONE IT, THANK GOD!” It was such a shame when we realised that the stopwatch timing the honey had turned itself off. We think Lydia is still timing the honey today. Over the course of the year, 4 Green’s scientific enquiry skills have improved immensely. Every student demonstrated how well they could work in a team and were able to hypothesize outcomes from collating their ideas. This was particularly evident during our last theme called Active Planet, where they were able to build on their knowledge of the natural earth from other lessons and apply it to a scientific enquiry. We certainly have some budding young scientists. Students in 4 Orange and 4 Yellow have made Mr Souassou very proud with the tremendous improvements in their reading and comprehension. These classes have been nicknamed the Speedy Readers for their ability to read efficiently and answer inference questions on a range of texts.

Here’s a special poem written just for Year 4 students by our very own Mr. Spencer. Stay safe, stay home, What a year it has been. Both virtual learning and days in school, And everything in between. From muted microphones when we could not hear To other asking, “what are we learning?” The dynamic of working virtually, Was nothing but entertaining! You’ve made us teachers very proud, Showing great determination. We’ve all definitely earned a lie in, And a very long vacation. We've watched you all learn and grow, and change from day to day. We hope that all of the things we've done, Have helped you in some way. With loads of happy memories, we send you off to go and explore With great hope and expectations, for what next year holds in store. On a personal note, I’d like to say, It’s the end of my time here, Its been pleasure, good luck to you all, I’m glad I spent it here.


YEAR 5 What a year we’ve had in Year 5! I want to start off by praising everyone for working so hard and showing so much resilience throughout a challenging year. We were so impressed by all the amazing work you’ve done and how you’ve never stopped smiling. What are your favourite memories from the year? One of the highlights has definitely been the amazing artwork you produced. We were blown away by your creativity and artistic skills! In particular, the space art you produced inspired by the work of Peter Thorpe, and the silhouette paintings where you used blending skills to paint stunning backgrounds, were truly amazing. Earlier in the year, we used papier-mâché to make Roman helmets. What a messy experience that was! Your patience and perseverance really shone during that activity. I’m sure you will carry these skills with you into Year 6 where you will develop them even further. We enjoyed some wonderful literature this year. Kensuke’s Kingdom was a fascinating tale of discovery and survival along with plenty of screeching monkeys! We also met Liam Digby, a young boy who was way too tall for his age, in Cosmic. In our online work you all did so well writing sentences and paragraphs to go along with the wordless book, Flood. I hope you all keep reading throughout the summer as it is one of the best exercises you can do for your brain! Can you remember our STEAM projects from this year? We had a great time investigating aqueducts and then building our own. Some of them worked better than others, but it was great to see all of you trying your best to improve your designs whenever you identified a problem. You also designed and constructed some excellent space colonies. Some of you included hotels, schools, hospitals, playgrounds and more – your creativity and ingenuity were a joy to behold. We wish all of you and your families the very best for the summer and the year ahead. We’re sure we’ll see you around school, so don’t forget to stop and say hello!

YEAR 6 As we look back at the memories from Year 6, we are proud to celebrate so many achievements both within school and outside of school. With the COVID-19 pandemic, this year has been extremely difficult, nonetheless you should all be proud of your efforts, progress and successes. Year 6 have thoroughly enjoyed the topics studied this academic year. Their favourite was Vikings: Guts and Gory. Students looked at all aspects of Viking life, investigated human and physical features of Scandinavia and even made their own weapons! The topic finished with a wonderful Viking day where we virtually met a Viking who answered all of our questions and told us about his experiences in battle. As we progressed through Term 2, we were excited to start our topic Making The News. In this topic, we investigated a crime, finding clues to form a report. We identified different sources of news and determined the validity and reliability of each. We even created a timeline chronologically ordering the history of news reporting. By the end of this topic, we were able to create a brand-new news channel appropriate for children. Many of us created apps, television broadcasts and printed publications as a means of sharing our news. During Term 3, we began to work on our topic Out of Africa. It was amazing what we learnt in such a short amount of time! At the beginning of the topic, some students thought that Africa was a country, but we soon found out it was a continent with over 54 countries and a wide range of landscapes. Did you know, there are no tigers in Africa? Year 6 also enjoyed addressing misconceptions and used a range of sources to make inferences about a location. We analysed how trade is important and discussed ways in which we could help developing countries. Throughout the year, the students have been extremely flexible and have blended well between synchronous and asynchronous learning. The smooth transition between virtual and face-to-face learning has been faultless, and your determination and efforts have been admirable. It has been a challenging but special year for everyone, and every day it has been a pleasure to see you either go home smiling or work from home so passionately. The Year 6s have been encouraged, challenged and motivated by all of the Year 6 team. We cannot wait to see them grow as they progress into mature, intelligent secondary school students. MESSAGE FROM THE HEAD OF SECONDARY

Dear Students, Parents and Colleagues,

‫أ‬،‫أﻋﺰاﺋﻲ اﻟﻄﻠﺒﺔ وأوﻟﻴﺎء اﻷﻣﻮر واﻟﺰﻣﻼء‬

What a year! I would usually start writing my Secondary School Yearbook introduction with reflections on the multitude of themed days our children took part in or the assemblies they conducted, or some incredible academic, social, physical or personal achievements.

‫ﻳﺎ ﻟﻪ ﻣﻦ ﻋﺎم! ﻋﺎدةً ﻣﺎ أﺑﺪأ ﻓﻲ ﻛﺘﺎﺑﺔ ﻣﻘﺪﻣﺔ اﻟﻜﺘﺎب اﻟﺴﻨﻮي ﻟﻠﻤﺮﺣﻠﺔ‬ ‫اﻹﻋﺪادﻳﺔ واﻟﺜﺎﻧﻮﻳﺔ ﻣﻊ ﺗﺄﻣﻼت ﺣﻮل اﻟﻌﺪﻳﺪ ﻣﻦ اﻷﻳﺎم اﻟﺘﻲ ﺷﺎرك ﻓﻴﻬﺎ‬ ‫ أو‬،‫ أو ﺑﻌﺾ اﻹﻧﺠﺎزات اﻷﻛﺎدﻳﻤﻴﺔ‬،‫ﻃﻼﺑﻨﺎ أو اﻟﺘﺠﻤﻌﺎت اﻟﺘﻲ ﻧﻈﻤﻮﻫﺎ‬ ‫ا‬.‫ أو اﻟﺠﺴﺪﻳﺔ أو اﻟﺸﺨﺼﻴﺔ اﻟﺮاﺋﻌﺔ‬،‫اﻻﺟﺘﻤﺎﻋﻴﺔ‬

Today, I will not. It is true to say that the entire world was forced to adapt to a ‘pandemic way of life’, to a lesser or greater extent depending on the regions, but it is truer to say that school communities in Qatar had to mold themselves into an ever-changing educational model in the past 12 months. Looking back, what I am proudest of is the resilience and the kindness I saw and felt in our entire school community. The challenges have created opportunities for further support and an increased sense of ‘we are in it together’. This was fascinating to watch and be part of it.

We have said it throughout the year but this needs to be recorded for years to come: our students have reached new levels of agility and strength. Despite the constant timetable changes, our students have attended lessons at school, live online or worked independently at home. The smile that we could fathom on camera, or behind their mask as they walked through the school gates, and through the sparks in their eyes said it all. As such, thank you, dear students and parents for fostering the excitement and commitment towards school and learning; and thank you, dear teachers, for your ability to constantly explore new ways to stretch your flexibility further, and keep the excitement and commitment of our students alive. Another milestone was reached for us as a school community this academic year: we are saying goodbye to our first-ever cohort of Year 13 graduates. All of them have completed most of their secondary schooling with us, and some of them even started in Primary School. What a journey this has been for them and for us (and their parents!). It is with immense pride, shared by my teaching colleagues, that we are seeing them find their new pathways to keep working at reaching their ambitions. Having had the privilege to witness them grow, I am humbled to have contributed to sending off to the wider world well-balanced, reflective and highly caring young adults. The end of an academic year is the time when we say goodbye to some families and some teachers. Thank you for being a part of our community, and I wish you all the best as you start the intimidating but also electrifying transition to another school and potentially a new country. I hope the summer break brings some respite to all of you. Thank you for your continued support. I wish you safe travels for those of you enjoying the summer abroad, or a safe summer under the ever-shining sun in Qatar.

I have truly enjoyed teaching all of you for Humanities and Islamic Studies this year. It has been interesting to know you in the classroom as your teacher, whether it be virtually or in school. It has also been a pleasure to be your Head of Year. As a year group your behaviour has been excellent. What a great start to your secondary education it has been.

I know it has been a challenging year for us all with the combination of blended learning and in school classes. I know from teaching you all that approximately 95% of you prefer to be in school learning together. Despite the many challenges, it has been admirable to see you all work so hard with excellent energy both online and in school. Many teachers have commented on the exemplary behaviour and in class engagement of the Year 7s across the year, and we have given Stars of the Week to showcase this. In Humanities, students have worked very hard at times creating amazing leaflets and blogs online, which have been to a very high standard.

I wish you all a restful summer and hope that you have time to relax with loved ones. Whether you get the chance to travel or spend it here in Qatar, I pray you have a safe holiday. YEAR 8 Dear parents and students, What a year it has been. I would like to take this opportunity to reflect and recognise the resilience of all students during these challenging months, a period which I hope we can now look toward moving out of. It has been incredibly difficult and at times quite tiring for everyone. Students and teachers alike have missed the normal buzz and excitement of day-to-day school life, and I hope that next year brings a return to normality. Given that we have overcome all these challenges this year together, we can now look forward to whatever the future might deliver with optimism, knowing that we have developed skills and strategies. We can collectively take a great deal of satisfaction from the time we have had with the students, to learn, grow and develop, particularly regarding our IT proficiency! As mentioned previously, from term to term we have faced each challenge with a continued resilience, and we can be sure that students are now well-equipped in dealing with any uncertainty life may bring in the future. I hope that students have learned a new skill or made a lifestyle change that they are wanting to take with them as we transition out of the pandemic. I will try to appreciate the outdoors a little more and look forward to visiting my family once the borders open! Looking ahead to next year, it will hopefully be a welcome return toward normal in-class learning conditions, and we can all look forward to the buzz and daily excitement of school life with all students in the building. I hope that all of Year 8 have an enjoyable summer and look forward to an exciting year ahead in Year 9.

YEAR 9 As Head of Year 9, let me begin by saying what an amazing year 2020-2021 has turned out to be—a year of organised chaos with constant changing yet noteworthy resilience from everyone, especially our students. We kicked off the school year welcoming back our Year 9s in August after months of COVID lockdown and online learning. Students were greeted with both smiling new faces and familiar ones, new routines and similar practice, new blended learning and online conditions; however, what remained continuous were the impressive attitudes and positive growth mindset our students exhibited throughout the year. Despite the mask mandates and other restrictions put in place to ensure the safe return of students and staff, our Year 9s were able to navigate these whilst maintaining NAISAKs proud culture of High Five: Show Respect, Work Hard, Aim High, Be Nice, and Accept Responsibility. To recognise this, each week a Year 9 student who exhibited these qualities was selected by his or her teachers as Star of the Week! Huge congratulations to our 18 winners! I am confident we will see even more Stars emerge in Year 10. Working hard and aiming high are just two characteristics our Year 9 group portrayed across all subjects this year. Students participated in numerous learning activities that diversified their interests, skill sets, and challenged them outside their normal comfort zones; these experiences included opportunities such as: A mock trial where students in English researched laws, precedents, and procedures in order to create and perform the delivery of justice for the Big Bad Wolf versus Little Red Riding Hood (we have several future prosecutors and lawyers in our midst!). This put into practice persuasive writing and speaking techniques as well as propaganda devices used in modern media. Music students looked at various music styles including the traditional music and instruments of Qatar, listening to the Qatar Philharmonic, and the music of the resident female Qatari composer, Dana Al Fardan. One of their projects was an M&M Beatbox (like in the chocolates) where students studied the organ works of Bach to see how he used polyphonic texture and the importance of this in their Beatbox music layers in the music of today. In Art, students produced gorgeous portraits of Shakespeare and/or bookmarks to celebrate the Bard and his works. In addition, one of our Year 9s, Krishnaa Parmar, received one of NAISAK’s Qatar National Day art competition prizes for her art representing Qatar. Students often played Factile and Kahoot in Science, integrating their love of technology as an engaging method of learning valuable skills. Science students also made electromagnets to gain practical knowledge of how electromagnetic transformers work. PE students, when allowed, participated in various outdoor activities including fantastic games of dodgeball with some tense moments, epic catches, and great shots too. I am proud of both the quality and quantity of learning that has taken place this year in Year 9. These experiences have prepared students for the transition to the IGCSE curriculum next year, and I look forward to following all their future successes.

YEAR 10 Dear Year 10,

‫ا‬،‫أﻋﺰاﺋﻲ ﻃﻠﺒﺔ اﻟﺴﻨﺔ اﻟﻌﺎﺷﺮة‬

It has been a wonderful year getting to know you all as your Head of Year, Form Tutor, and (for most of you) your science teacher. What a great start you have all had to your iGCSE years and even though it has not been usual, you have all shown great adaptability to the many changes that you were faced with throughout the year.

I think it is safe to say that between all the learning, we have had some great laughter-filled moments and made some wonderful memories. I really look forward to our interactions, whether it be in person or virtual. I am excited to witness how you all will continue to flourish and grow as young adults in Year 11, and I look forward to accompanying you all on that journey as your Head of Year.

‫ ﻣﺮرﻧﺎ ﺑﺒﻌﺾ‬،‫أﻋﺘﻘﺪ أﻧﻪ ﻣﻦ اﻵﻣﻦ أن ﻧﻘﻮل إﻧﻪ ﺑﻴﻦ ﻛﻞ اﻟﺘﻌﻠﻢ‬ .‫اﻟﻠﺤﻈﺎت اﻟﺮاﺋﻌﺔ اﻟﻤﻠﻴﺌﺔ ﺑﺎﻟﻀﺤﻚ وﺻﻨﻌﻨﺎ ﺑﻌﺾ اﻟﺬﻛﺮﻳﺎت اﻟﺮاﺋﻌﺔ‬ .‫ ﺳﻮاء ﻛﺎﻧﺖ ﺷﺨﺼﻴﺔ أو اﻓﺘﺮاﺿﻴﺔ‬،‫إﻧﻨﻲ أﺗﻄﻠﻊ ﺣﻘًﺎ إﻟﻰ ﺗﻔﺎﻋﻼﺗﻨﺎ‬ ‫ﻳﺴﻌﺪﻧﻲ أن أﺷﻬﺪ ﻛﻴﻒ ﺳﺘﺴﺘﻤﺮون ﺟﻤﻴﻌﴼ ﻓﻲ اﻻزدﻫﺎر واﻟﻨﻤﻮ‬ ‫ وأﺗﻄﻠﻊ إﻟﻰ ﻣﺮاﻓﻘﺘﻜﻢ ﺟﻤﻴﻌﴼ‬،‫ﻛﺸﺒﺎب ﻓﻲ اﻟﺼﻒ اﻟﺤﺎدي ﻋﺸﺮ‬ ‫ا‬.‫ﻓﻲ ﺗﻠﻚ اﻟﺮﺣﻠﺔ ﺑﺼﻔﺘﻲ ﻣﺴﺆوﻟﺔ اﻟﻤﺮﺣﻠﺔ‬

What really fills me with pride about you all is the fact that you are all so respectful and hard working. I do think, between Year 11s and Year 10s, I have had the best year groups to be Head of Year for, and I am sure other teachers would agree. You have big boots to fill as the outgoing Year 11s have set the bar really high, in the same way you’ve set the bar high for the incoming Year 10s. I am sure you are all up to the challenge! In ten years when you look back, it might be hard to differentiate Year 10 memories from Year 11 ones. It is the case for me! Both these years just seem like one because you are continuing with the same subjects, same specifications, same teachers and with the same end goal. But it is important not to let this fatigue you. You are over half way through your iGCSEs and the end is definitely in sight! During the summer holiday, take time out to recharge and unwind but also prepare for the coming year in whatever way works for you. I know it will be a great year and a strong finish for you all.

YEAR 11 Dear Year 11s, What a year it has been for you! In normal circumstances iGCSEs are an incredibly challenging couple of years, but you had the extra burden of completing almost your entire iGCSEs in a pandemic – much of which was virtual. That was no easy feat, and you should all give yourselves a massive round of applause. You can now take a deep breath and take a much-deserved break before embarking on the new challenges that Year 12 will hold. When I think back to my time in Year 11 ten years ago (wow it feels like yesterday), I remember it being a time of great excitement and apprehension. Excitement because five years of secondary school were finally coming to an end, a long summer holiday was on the horizon and a new start at Sixth Form was awaiting. With all of that, there was great apprehension as to what the future would bring. One thing is for certain though, and that is that the future is not! In the years leading up to Year 11, you have forged friendships and gone through experiences as a year group that will bond you forever. Despite this bond, inevitably life will take you all on different paths that, if you are lucky, may cross again once you leave NAISAK. When those paths do cross again, you’ll have an opportunity to reminisce and once again feel the age you are now. You will share a laugh and maybe even a cry when you recollect the experiences that connected you. You’ll also be able to look back at videos and images taken during this time of your life that you shared on social media (and cringe), so make as many as you can! Believe it or not, when I was in Year 11 Snapchat, Instagram, and TikTok were not a thing! We had something called Bebo (look it up!) and of course what you all surely consider the ‘old people app’, Facebook! You are so lucky to be in the position of documenting your life right now, and can look back on those snaps, stories, and posts as one big highlight reel. As you read this, you are the oldest you have ever been, and the youngest you ever will be again. So, start your next chapters with the wisdom of age and the optimism of youth and make it extraordinary. Much love, always

YEAR 12 & 13 Well, what a year 2020-2021 has been. For our year 12s and 13s, this year has been a year filled with uncertainty and many rapid changes. At the beginning of the year, no one would have predicted that the year would end with exams being cancelled and another lockdown. One thing this year has shown us is how strong, resilient and determined our students are. The beginning of the year finally provided an opportunity for students to come out of their homes. To be reunited with familiar faces, readjust to new routines and meet new students and teachers. I would like to thank all the Year 12 and 13 students for the warm welcome I received. Thanks to them, I felt like I belonged here in Qatar, and that I was immediately part of the NAISAK team. At times, I felt homesick and wanted to go back to London, but it was the students here that kept me going. As the year progressed, many students started their university applications. The conversations I’ve had were inspiring to say the least, with students talking about their passions, future dreams and ambitions. We have students joining universities in Canada, America, the UK, Malaysia and of course here in Qatar too. Deciding which university will be the right choice is always difficult, but this year that was made more challenging due to lockdown. However, our students once again proved their resilience and determination as they continued with their applications, using all the online tools they had at their disposal. Students attended online fairs and webinars to better equip themselves using a new platform, (CIALFO) which we implemented this year. Moving into 2021, we were provided with a ray of hope, as KS5 students were able to return to school every day. This allowed the school to feel like it used to be; the library filled with students revising, and everyone reading and catching up with each other. After so long, finally, it seemed like we would return to normality. Sadly, this was short-lived as cases began to rise and once again, we had to return to online learning. Time after time, our students bounced back rapidly and adapted to online learning swiftly. They have demonstrated that in the face of adversity, they will persevere and not let anything get in the way. Throughout this rollercoaster of a year, our students have been relentless in ensuring that life continues, and their goals are achieved. My message to the KS5 students is to continue doing what you have this year. Don’t ever settle for less, keep that determination and resilience to go out there and achieve your goals and ambitions. Sadly, most of you will not be returning, and we could not give you the farewell we would have hoped to, but from me and NAISAK we wish you all the success in your future.
