Imtiwapang Aier urges research scholars to focus on societal benefits
Correspondent
KO H I M A , S E P T. 2 8 . (NPN): Parliamentary secretary of Geology and Mining, Dr. Imtiwapang Aier said the scientific attitude should be for societal benefit rather than science which dealt only with research or for academic purpose while addressing a host of research scholars as the chief guest during the national seminar on Interdisciplinary Research In Chemical Sciences (NSIRCS) -2016 at Kohima Science College Jotsoma on Wednesday. Dr. Aier said at the time of India’s independence the scientific and technological infrastructure was not up to the mark when compared with developed nations, however the resolution on scientific policy passed by the parliament on March 4, 1958 made a powerful nation. He reminded that much of the present progress of human kind was associated with science making the world a global village. Parliamentary secretary opined that this interdisciplinary approach would conglomerate different streams into a single block that would

be useful for the development and management of mankind with a vision for the nation and for the North East people in particular that would bring inclusive growth in the region. Dr. Aier said he strongly believed that this scientific seminar would provide a solid platform for the eminent scientist, researchers, technologist and students from both outside and within the state to exchange their views and ideas and share their findings which would play a vital role of interdisciplinary research in chemical sciences for humanity.
He reminded the gathering that chemistry has led to creation of bags for robotic landings on the planet Mars, nano-technology leading to advance materials, devices and applications in energy, medicine and electronic to improve life, health care safety etc. However, he said the as technology advances, the regulating system should keep pace with the applications of chemistry and chemical management law must be updated to adapt to scientific advancements and to promote that chemical products are safe for intended users. Centre of advanced study and department of chemistry NEHU Shillong, Prof. R.H. Duncan Lyngdoh spoke about metalmetal bonds in transition metal chemistry, Wernerian coordination complexes, discovery of metal–metal (MM) bonds, scope of MM bonds in binuclear and polynuclear complexes and others. Principal KSCJ, Dr. I. Anungla Aier in her address said human beings were facing numerous challenges from food security to climate change and environment
beyond boundaries. She said this kind of seminar was very essential as it held the key to many problems, which together with collective effort and sharing could shed the light for solution. The programme was attended by eminent researchers, scholars and lecturers (chemistry) from various universities like Pondicherry, Manipur, Dispur, Guwahati, NEHU, Pakai Christian College, SASARD, Nagaland, Fazl Ali College and others.
