Communal clashes leave 86 dead in Nigeria Erdogan wins re-election as president JOS (NIGERIA), JUN 25 (AGENCIES): Nigeria’s President Muhammadu Buhari has called for calm after 86 people were killed in an attack by suspected nomadic herders against farming communities in the restive centre of the country. The grim discovery in the Barikin Ladi area of Plateau state came after days of violence apparently sparked by an attack by ethnic Berom farmers on Fulani herders on Thursday. State police commissioner Undie Adie said a search of Berom villages in the area following clashes on Saturday found “86 persons altogether were killed”. Adie told reporters six people were also injured and 50 houses were razed. Bodies of those who died have been released to their families, he added. The deaths are the latest in a long-running battle for land and resources that is putting President Muhammadu Buhari under pressure as elections approach next year. The violence fuelled by ethnic, religious and political allegiances has

killed thousands over several decades. Analysts believe it could become Nigeria’s biggest security concern, eclipsing Boko Haram’s Islamist insurgency that has left at least 20,000 dead since 2009. Buhari’s office said he “appeals for calm and assures that no efforts will be spared” to bring those responsible to justice and prevent further attacks. “The grievous loss of lives and property arising
from the killings in Plateau today is painful and regrettable,” he added. The Plateau state government said it had imposed restrictions on movements in the Riyom, Barikin Ladi and Jos South areas “to avert a breakdown of law and order”. “The curfew takes effect immediately... and movement is restricted from 6:00 pm (1700 GMT) to 6:00 am, except (for) those on essential duties,” spokesman
Rufus Bature said. On Sunday, ethnic Berom youths set up barricades on the Jos-Abuja highway and attacked motorists who looked “Fulani and Muslim”, according to those who escaped the violence. Plateau state police spokesman Tyopev Terna and Major Adam Umar, from the military taskforce in the state capital, Jos, confirmed the blockade and vandalism to several cars. There were no offi-
cial reports of deaths but Baba Bala, who escaped the violence on the road, said at least six people were killed. “I escaped with a smashed windscreen and dents on my car. I saw six dead bodies and several damaged cars,” he added. Plateau state governor Simon Lalong promised that “operational plans are currently being put in place to secure the affected communities and fish out perpetrators of these crimes. “While we pray for God’s guidance through this difficult time, we will do everything humanly possible to secure our state immediately.” But the violence in Plateau followed a pattern that has become familiar in the state and elsewhere and which the authorities appear unable to stop. On Thursday, Berom farmers attacked five ethnic Fulani herders travelling with their cattle in a truck at Heipang, in Barikin Ladi. On Friday, two Berom children were killed in Arangai and Mangu Halle villages in what appeared to be reprisal attacks.
L on d on , J un 2 5 (Agencies): Turkey’s long-standing leader Recep Tayyip Erdogan has won a new five-year term after securing outright victory in the first round of a presidential poll. Mr Erdogan got nearly 53% with almost all votes counted. His closest rival Muharrem Ince was on 31%, BBC reported. He will now assume sweeping new powers, won in a controversial referendum last year. The post of PM will be abolished. Mr Ince accepted the result on the basis of poll figures - but said that everything about the vote was unfair. Final results will be announced on Friday. The polls were the most fiercely fought in many years. Mr Erdogan has presided over a strong economy and built up a solid support base by investing in healthcare, education and infrastructure. But the 64-year-old has also polarised opinion, cracking down on opponents and putting some

160,000 people in jail. Mr Erdogan gave a triumphant victory speech from the balcony of his party’s headquarters in the capital Ankara at 03:00 (00:00 GMT), declaring: “The winner of this election is each and every individual among my 81 million citizens.” Congratulations have come in from Islamic leaders including Iranian President Hassan Rouhani. Russian President Vladimir Putin talked of Mr Erdogan’s “great political authority and mass support”. Mr Ince, from the Republican People’s Party (CHP), said the election was unfair from its declaration to the announcement
of the results. Turkey was entering a dangerous period of oneman rule, he added. But he said that there was no significant difference between official results and his party’s figures, and therefore he would accept the outcome. There were another four candidates on the presidential ballot, all of whom fell below 10% of the vote. President Erdogan will assume major new powers under Turkey’s new constitution. The changes were endorsed in a tight referendum last year by 51% of voters, and are due to come into force after the election. Some critics argue the enhanced role will place too much power in one person’s hands, and that Turkey’s new system lacks the checks and balances of other executive presidencies like France or the US. Mr Erdogan maintains his increased authority will empower him to address Turkey’s economic woes and defeat Kurdish rebels in the country’s south-east.

However, the WHO noted that it had reviewed available evidence before including it, adding that it had taken into account views reflecting a “consensus of experts from different disciplines and geographical regions”. According to Etchells, estimates of those who are addicted range from fewer than 0.5 per cent to nearly 50 per cent of players,

the summit commitments. At the Singapore summit, the first meeting between a serving U.S. president and a North Korean leader, Kim reaffirmed a commitment to work toward complete denuclearization of the Korean peninsula, while Trump said he would halt joint U.S.-South Korean “war games.” Mattis, at the start of a week-long trip that includes stops in China, South Korea and Japan, said Trump’s guidance on suspending military drills applied not just to the major Freedom Guardian exercise in August but also to two smaller Korean Marine Exchange Program training exercises. “The large, joint, com-

erate in good faith or not,” the official said, speaking on condition of anonymity. “There will be specific asks and there will be a specific timeline when we present the North Koreans with our concept of what implementation of the summit agreement looks like.” Trump has drawn some criticism from national security analysts for an agreement that emerged from his June 12 summit with Kim that had few details on how Pyongyang would surrender its nuclear weapons and ballistic missiles. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said last week he would likely travel back to North Korea “before too terribly long” to try to flesh out

which meant there was a danger of failing to identify who actually had a problem and who just enjoyed playing games. “What we’re doing then is over-diagnosing, we’re sort of pathologising a behaviour that for many people is not harmful in any way,” he noted. The experts were also sceptical that screen time overall -- including the use of devices like smartphones and tablets -- was harmful for children and adolescents. As of now it is better for people to keep smartphones and other screens out of theirs and their children’s bedrooms at night.

L on d o n , J un 2 5 (IANS): The classification of “gaming disorder” as a mental health condition by the World Health Organization (WHO) was “premature” and based on a “moral panic”, experts have suggested. They contended that while the decision was well intentioned, there was a lack of good quality scientific evidence about how to properly diagnose video game addiction, the BBC reported. According to the WHO, a person has gaming disorder if they have impaired control over gaming, in terms of frequency, intensity, duration, and termination. These people give increasing priority to gaming “to the extent that gaming takes precedence over other life interests”, and that they will continue gaming despite the occurrence of negative consequences, it said. But the move risked “pathologising” a behaviour that was harmless for most people, the report said. “We’re essentially pathologising a hobby, so what’s next? There are studies on tanning addiction,
ALASKA, Jun 25 (Agencies): The United States will soon present a timeline to North Korea with “specific asks” of Pyongyang after a historic summit between U.S. President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, a senior U.S. defense official said. According to Reuters, the official, who spoke to a small group of reporters ahead of a trip to Asia this week by Defense Secretary Jim Mattis, did not specify details but suggested that the timeline would be rapid enough to make clear Pyongyang’s level of commitment. “We’ll know pretty soon if they’re going to op-
