BEIJING, JUN 17 (PTI): China on Wednesday claimed that the sovereignty over the Galwan Valley area in Ladakh “always belonged to it” but underlined that Beijing does not wish to see “more clashes,” after the militaries of the two countries were engaged in the biggest confrontation in over five decades. India’s External Affairs Ministry on Tuesday said the violent confrontation between armies of India and China in eastern Ladakh was the result of an attempt by the Chinese side to unilaterally change the status quo in the region. The ministry said both sides suffered casualties that could have been avoided had the agreement arrived earlier at the higher level been scrupulously followed by the Chinese side.

At a briefing at the Chinese Foreign Ministry, Spokesman Zhao Lijian said the “sovereignty of the Galwan Valley area has always belonged to China,” echoing a statement of the Chinese military on Tuesday, opening up another dispute. When asked since Galwan is regarded as settled border and why China is claiming sovereignty over the area now, Zhao said,

Guterres’s Associate Spokesperson Eri Kaneko said: “We are concerned about reports of violence and deaths along the Line of Actual Control between India and China.” She added: “We urge both sides to exercise maximum restraint. We take positive note of reports

Beijing moved on a war footing on Wednesday, cancelling hundreds of domestic flights and trains while ramping up the mass testing of 90,000 people to stem the spread of the coronavirus, as the city reported 31 new COVID-19 cases, pushing the tally to 137. Two airports in Beijing have cancelled 1,255 domestic flights, nearly 70 per cent of the scheduled trips, the official media reported. Beijing currently does not operate international flights. The national railway operator will allow passengers, who had booked train tickets in and out of Beijing as of Tuesday, to refund tickets without any extra charges. Starting Wednesday, Beijing halts return to campus, and resumes online courses for middle and primary school students, as well as suspends college students’ return to campus, the reports said.

Beijing has asked libraries, museums, parks to limit visitors up to 30 per cent of full flow and halted cross-province group tours, the reports said. The flight and train cancellations came after Beijing became a “no-gozone” on Tuesday as many provincial cities raised alerts on travel to the Chinese capital. Beijing on Tuesday upgraded its emergency response to COVID-19 from level III to II starting.

The city is also testing 90,000 people who had visited Xinfadi wholesale market in the last six days and a senior city official

“regarding the mater of the Galwan area we are having communication through military and diplomatic channels. Right and wrong of this is very clear. This happened at the Chinese side of the border and China is not to be blamed for it.” He also refused to comment on reports of 43 casualties on the Chinese side during the face-off with the Indian Army in the Galwan Valley on Monday night. “The border troops are dealing with relevant matter,” he said. When pointed out that the India has released the number of casualties and why Beijing was not providing the number for Chinese side, he said, “Ihave stated that Chinese and Indian border troops are now jointly dealing with the relevant

that the two countries are engaged in deescalating the situation.” The clashes on Monday, during which no firearms were reportedly not used, was probably the worst confrontation since the 1962 war between the neighbours. Colonel B. Santosh Babu of the 16 Bihar Regiment and two other Indian Army warned that the situation is “extremely severe”. After Beijing’s COVID19 infections increased, it seems that the capital has now become a “no-go zone” for other parts of China, as many places have raised alert on travels to Beijing and strengthened health check on arrivals from Beijing, state-run Global Times reported. China’s National Health Commission (NHC) said on Wednesday that 55 new confirmed COVID19 cases were reported on the Chinese mainland on Tuesday, of which 11 were asymptomatic cases. Of the domestically transmitted cases, 31 cases were reported in Beijing, one in Hebei Province, and one in Zhejiang Province, the NHC said in its daily report said. Beijing on Monday reported 106 cases.

Also on Tuesday, 11 new asymptomatic cases, including four from overseas, were reported on the mainland. Six cases were re-categorised as confirmed cases. The NHC said 106 asymptomatic cases, including 62 from overseas, were still under medical observation. No deaths related to the disease were reported on Tuesday, according to the commission.

As of Tuesday, the overall confirmed cases in China had reached 83,265, including 252 patients who were still being treated, with seven in severe condition.

Altogether, 78,379 people have been discharged after recovery and 4,634 people had died of the disease, the NHC said. matter on the ground. I have nothing to add at the moment.” “On the situation at the China-India border both sides are having close communication with each other to resolve this through diplomatic and military channels, Zhao said. “The over all border situation is stable and controllable,” he told correspondents to a volley of questions. Responding to a question whether whether further clashes could be averted, the spokesman said, “from the Chinese side we do not wish to see more clashes.” “I belive you have noticed that China and India have both said that we are committed to resolve the differences through dialogue safeguarding peace and tranquillity in the border area.

“As the world’s two biggest countries and emerging economies, the shared interest of China and India are far larger than the differences. “Both sides should earnestly follow important consensus reached by the leaders of the two countries and ensure that the bilateral relationship can move forward in the right direction and that serves our peoples interests and expectations. We hope India can work the clash along the LAC in Eastern Ladakh on Monday night. However, the Indian Army later disclosed that 20 personnel had been killed.

Unlike India, China has not officially said if there it had suffered casualties.

But Hu Xijn, editor of the Global Times, tweeted that there were Chinese casualties but the government did not want to publish the numbers because they do not “want people of the two countries to compare the casualties number so to avoid stoking public mood. This is goodwill from Beijing.” with China to this end,” Zhao said.

Twenty Indian Army personnel, including a Colonel, were killed in the clash with Chinese troops in the Galwan Valley on Monday night, the biggest military confrontation in over five decades that has significantly escalated the already volatile border standoff between the two countries.

A large number of Indian and Chinese troops have been engaged in an eyeball-to-eyeball situation in Galwan Valley and certain other areas of eastern Ladakh for the last five weeks, including in Pangong Tso, Galwan Valley, Demchok and Daulat Beg Oldie in eastern Ladakh. Monday’s face-off was the biggest confrontation between the two militaries after their 1967 clashes in Nathu La when India lost around 80 soldiers while over 300 Chinese army personnel were killed in the face-off. The Indian Army has been fiercely objecting to the transgressions, and demanded their immediate withdrawal for restoration of peace and tranquillity in the area. Both sides held a series of talks in the last few days to resolve the row.

17 (IANS): New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern on Wednesday ordered a top defence official to monitor COVID-19 isolation facilities and borders after a “failure of the system” in which two overseas arrivals were able to leave managed quarantine and later tested positive for the virus.

Ardern, whose government has been praised for its early, strict and effective response to the pandemic, adopted the measure after reports emerged that two women, who had arrived in New Zealand from the United Kingdom on June 7, travelled some 650 kms (404 miles) from Auckland

Kabu l, Jun 17 (IANS):

At least 17 soldiers were killed and 11 others wounded after Taliban militants attacked military camps in two Afghan northern provinces early Wednesday, sources said.

In northern Kunduz province, five Afghan army soldiers were killed and six others wounded when clashes occurred in Talawka, a locality, 15 km north of the provincial capital Kunduz city along a road linking the city to bordering town of Shir Khan, Xinhua news agency reported.

“The Taliban insurgents were forced back from the site after nearly two hours of fighting. Four militants were also killed,” Abdul Qadir from army’s 217 Pamir Corps told Xinhua. In northern Jawzjan province, 12 army soldiers and five militants were killed and five army personnel and 10 militants wounded after Taliban stormed an army camp in Bala Hisar, a strategic locality in Aqcha district, a provincial government spokesman confirmed. The latest clashes came as militancy and counter-militancy traditionally gets momentum in spring and summer commonly known as fighting season in Afghanistan. pleting the mandatory 14- day quarantine or undergoing COVID-19 testing, Efe news reported.

The women, who were allowed on compassionate grounds to travel six days after their arrival in New Zealand, later tested positive for COVID-19, following which New Zealand authorities have contacted the 320 close contacts of the pair to ask them to be tested for the virus. “This case represents an unacceptable failure of the system. It should never have happened and it cannot be repeated,” Ardern said.

(AP): Following weeks of national protests since the death of George Floyd, President Donald Trump has signed an executive order that he said would encourage better police practices. But he made no mention of the roiling national debate over racism spawned by police killings of black men and women.

Trump met privately with the families of several black Americans killed in interactions with police before his Rose Garden signing ceremony and said he grieved for the lives lost and families devastated.

But then he quickly shifted his tone and devoted most of his public remarks to a need to respect and support “the brave men and women in blue who police our streets and keep us safe.” He characterized the officers who have used excessive force as a “tiny” number of outliers among “trustworthy” police ranks.

“Reducing crime and raising standards are not opposite goals,” he said before signing the order Tuesday, flanked by police officials.

Trump and Republicans in Congress have been rushing to respond to the mass demonstrations people in quarantine and isolation facilities were required to be tested for the virus on Day 3 and Day 12 of their stay. “That should have happened in the cases we learned about yesterday. It did not and there are no excuses,” she said.

“Our borders and our controls at the borders must be rigorous,” the leader stressed. “They must be disciplined and they must have the confidence of ministers and all of you, New Zealanders, who got us here (to zero cases previously).”

Ardern then announced that she was appointing Assistant Chief of Defence Air

against police brutality and racial prejudice that have raged for weeks across the country in response to the deaths of Floyd and other black Americans.

At the signing event, he railed against those who committed violence during the largely peaceful protests while hailing the vast majority of officers as selfless public servants.

Trump’s executive order would establish a database that tracks police officers with excessive useof-force complaints in their records. Many officers who wind up involved in fatal incidents have long complaint histories, including Derek Chauvin, the white MinneCommodore Digby Webb to oversee all government quarantine and isolation facilities and undertake an audit of the existing processes to ensure they are being fully implemented.

“A i r C o m m o d o r e Webb will regularly report to ministers. As the assistant chief of defense he can also seek access to our military logistics operational expertise, and if needed personnel to assist in the running of the facility,” she said.

The PM added that Webb will make any changes needed to further strengthen border defences. She also announced that the susapolis police officer who has been charged with murder in the death of Floyd. Those records are often not made public, making it difficult to know if an officer has such a history.

The order would also give police departments a financial incentive to adopt best practices and encourage co-responder programs, in which social workers join police when they respond to nonviolent calls involving mental health, addiction and homeless issues. Trump said that, as part of the order, the use of chokeholds, which have become a symbol of police brutality, would be banned “except if

Acriminal complaint was filed in a court here on Wednesday, accusing Bollywood celebrities like Salman Khan, Karan Johar, Ekta Kapoor, Aditya Chopra and Sanjay Leela Bhansali of abetting the suicide of actor Sushant Singh Rajput. The com- plaint was filed by Sudhir Kumar Ojha, an advocate based here, before the court of

Chief Judicial Magistrate Mukesh Kumar. Sources said it may come up for hearing in due course.

A couple of other filmmakers have also been named as co-accused in the case.

Rajput’s father K K Singh and actress Kangana Ranaut, who came out with an angry statement after his death blaming his suicide on rampant nepotism and favouritism in the film industry, have been named as witnesses.

Ojha, a serial litigant who remains in news for filing complaints against film personalities, politicians and foreign heads of state, few of which go beyond the admission stage, has invoked IPC sections 306, 109, 504 and 506.

The death of Patna-born Rajput, at a young age of 34, has triggered a wave of sorrow across Bihar. Youngsters who found inspiration in

Rajput’s brilliant academic career followed by success in TV and films, have also been shattered. A 17-year-old girl ended her life in Rajendra Nagar locality of Patna on Tuesday. According to SHO of Kadamkuan police station, Nishikant Nishi, the girl hung herself from the ceiling of her home. In her statement before the police, the bereaved mother has said that the deceased had been depressed after doing badly in her board exams and after hearing about

Rajput, who was her favourite actor.

She kept watching the news incessantly and took the extreme step while she was alone at home, the mother told the police.

Don’t know cause of his depression: Sushant Singh’s father to police

Father of Bollywood actor Sushant Singh Rajput, who was found hanging at his apartment here on June 14, told police that he and other family members didn’t know the cause behind the actor’s depression, a police official said on Wednesday. Police have so far recorded statements of nine people, including the 34-year-old actor’s father KK Singh and his two daughters. Their statements were recorded on Tuesday before they flew to Delhi after performing last rites of the actor in Mumbai, the official said.

In his statement, K K Singh told police that family members were unaware about the cause of the actor’s depression, the official said.

“So far we have recorded statements of nine persons, including the actor’s cook, a caretaker and managers,” a senior officer said.

Police are also looking into whether Sushant was depressed due to any professional rivalry. Meanwhile, the police official said that investigators are still clueless about the trigger behind the actor taking the extreme step. F ilmmaker Abhinav Jimmy Kimmel to host 2020 Emmy Awards

Paris Jackson’s band The Soundflowers announce debut EP nounced that she’ll team up with boyfriend Gabriel Glenn to release their debut EP as The Soundflowers.

The five-track effort will arrive next week, featuring the tracks ‘Your Look (Glorious)’, ‘Geronimo’ and ‘Notes On A Ghost’.

Paris, the daughter of the late Michael Jackson, formed the group with Kashyap says he is being trolled for accusing Bollywood superstar Salman Khan of sabotaging his career.

“Looks like Salman Khan’s troll armies from Pakistan and Bangladesh is back on my facebook wall. The Government should seize the properties of the Khans and deport them to Pakistan, Bangladesh. Their trashy ancestors probably didn’t have enough money to move during partition... #BoycottSalmanKhan #Metoo #Investigate #Introspect,” Abhinav Kashyap posted on Facebook on Wednesday afternoon.

In a separate post, the filmmaker has complained of an attempt to hack his email id. “Someone just attempted to log into my email account. Now this is getting interesting... Why are the Khans getting so rattled...?? What are they hiding..?? Why are they desperate to shut me up..?? #BoycottSalmanKhan #Metoo #Investigate #Interrogate,” he wrote on Facebook.

Meanwhile, Salman Khan’s father Salim Khan has reacted to the allegations levelled by Kashyap against his family.

“Ji haan, humne hi sab kharab kiya hai na. Aap pehle jaake unki filmey dekhiye phir hum baat karte hai. Unhone mera naam daala hai na unki statement mein. Unhe shayad mere pitaji ka naam nahi pata. Unka naam hai Rashid Khan. Unhe hamaare dadaon

The controversy was sparked off when, in a recent Facebook post, Kashyap alleged that Salman Khan and his family sabotaged all his projects.
