Senior cricketers should promote Tests: Steve Waugh
Melbourne, Jul 26 (IANS): Former Australia skipper Steve Waugh on Tuesday said he wants the world’s leading cricketers to promote Test cricket first rather than the Twenty20 format of the game. Waugh believes the popularity of T20 and the financial windfall for players that comes with it is affecting the longest format of the game. “We have to hope senior cricketers in each country keep promoting Test cricket,” Waugh was quoted as saying by cricket.com.au on Tuesday. “Australian players still always talk about the Baggy Green cap and playing for

Moscow, Jul 26 (IANS): The new Russian anti-doping commission will include members of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA), as well as senior representatives of international sports federations and media, the newly-named head of the commission Vitaly Smirnov has said. The Russian Olympic Committee (ROC) on Monday appointed Smirnov, honorary president of the ROC and member of the IOC since 1971, to chair the anti-doping commission, following a recommendation by Russian
President Vladimir Putin, reports Xinhua. Smirnov was quoted as saying by Russian media after his appointment that the commission planned to closely collaborate with the IOC, its disciplinary commission, WADA, and all parties interested in fighting doping in sports. “We will soon take off to attend the executive board meeting at the session of the Olympic Committee and I will meet with (IOC President) Thomas Bach. We are open for cooperation,” the Interfax news agency quoted Smirnov as saying. He added that he ex-

The new commission was set up after the IOC decided not to ban the whole of the Russian team from participating in the 2016 Rio Olympic Games, leaving the fate of individual athletes not found of doping in the hands of respective international sports federations. In a separate development, the Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov denied Putin’s personal interference in tackling the issues related to participation of Russian athletes in the 2016 Olympics.
Chelsea want me, says Carlos Tevez
London, Jul 26 (Agencies): Carlos Tevez claims he will snub interest from Chelsea this summer to see out his career with Boca Juniors. The Argentina forward says Chelsea and Italian side Napoli want to bring him back to Europe, where he spent nine years with West Ham, both
Manchester clubs and Antonio Conte’s Juventus. Tevez returned to Buenos Aires and first club Boca in 2015, and the message to interested European clubs is clear: ‘I’m not coming back’. “I’m fine at Boca,” said the 32, year-old, quoted in Italy’s Corriere dello Sport. “Indeed my idea, my dream is

their country and the responsibility rests with senior players in every country (to do the same.)” The World Cup winning skipper also used the decline of West Indies as an example of how prioritising T20s can have a negative effect on Test matches. What concerns Waugh is the fact that the West Indies are current World T20 champions but in Tests they are struggling to fight it out against top quality sides. Waugh also said kids who grow up watching the likes of Chris Gayle and Dwayne Bravo endorsing T20 will obviously take to the format. “There is a danger there because obviously the Windies are fantastic at T20 and young kids see that. They see they can make a lot of money,” he said. “The West Indies got into a bit of trouble when Chris Gayle, who was a great Test player, said his priority was T20, then other senior players say the same thing, young kids hear it and all of a sudden the focus is on T20.”
Barce lona, J u l 26 (Agencies): Barcelona announced record revenues of €679m (£571m) for the 2015/16 season, according to the club’s financial results for the season. The reigning La Liga champions released the figures on Monday, with the overall revenue mark “representing a substantial increase of the figure originally budgeted for this area”. Barca recorded a net profit of €29m (£24m) after tax and the club’s board believe they are on course to hit the marks of a strategic plan that targets revenue of €1billion in 2021. The strategic plan includes the ambitious “Espai Barca” project which will see the Camp Nou completely renovated and increase its capacity to 105,000 as well as redeveloping the surrounding area. The club also announced a one-year extension to its agreement with Qatar Airways, who are Barcelona’s main shirt sponsor.

Mumbai, Jul 26 (Agencies): India need to dominate Test matches and players cannot be content with just looking to improve, captain Virat Kohli said after the tourists thrashed West Indies by an innings and 92 runs in the first Test in Antigua. The margin of the victory, secured within four days, was India’s largest outside Asia and gave the side a 1-0 lead in the four-match series. “We are not at a stage now where we need to come and improve,” Kohli, who scored his first double hundred during the test, told reporters. “We should be ready enough in international cricket to start dominating test matches and win those crucial situations and sessions. That’s how we become a better team. “If you think we are going to keep learning every series, learning every game, we will never get that hunger and that mindset to win games from difficult situations. “We need to challenge ourselves a little bit, which this team has been willing to do and which is a wonderful sign. The way we finished the test, it all panned out pretty nicely.” While Kohli has led India to a test series win in Sri Lanka and beat South Africa 3-0 at home, their record outside South Asia in the longest format has been poor. They have lost series in South Africa, New Zealand, England and Australia on tours since late 2013, something new coach Anil Kumble has said he wants to rectify. The 27-year-old Kohli replaced Mahendra Singh Dhoni as India’s test captain after the wicketkeeper-batsman retired from that form of cricket during the tour of

Kyrgios slumps in Toronto Toronto, Jul 26 (Agencies): Nick Kyrgios limped out of the Rogers Cup in Toronto with a 7-6 3-6 6-3 defeat to home favourite and Wimbledon junior champion Denis Shapovalov. The 17-year-old Canadian set up match point with his 12th ace before closing out the upset in style as his Australian opponent struggled for consistency. Kyrgios’ 13 aces - one of which saw the racquet fly out of his hand - were outnumbered by 18 double-faults and his frustration led to him sitting in the corner of the court
during the final changeover of the match. “Not great, obviously,” said Kyrgios, who was troubled by a sore knee but still unhappy with his lethargic showing. “I don’t know. I just didn’t play great.” “I’m not going to tell you what I did or didn’t do to prepare for this match. I just played pretty bad, but he played great and he earned it. “Obviously he was excited playing in front of his home crowd. I know what it feels like to come off one of your biggest junior results and then play in one of your home tournaments.”

Sunday not to impose a blanket ban on Russian athletes due to the country’s doping history, allowing sports federations to decide on individual cases. However, it said athletes who have been sanctioned in the past for doping would not be eligible for Rio. “My personal view, from the communications we had with people from the IOC, those people had no interest in clean sport,” Stepanov said in a telephone interview. “I got the impression the only thing they cared about, even the person from the ethics department, is protecting
and trying to see how fast she can run by being an honest athlete,” he added. The IOC recognized Stepanova’s testimony and public statements as having “made a contribution to the protection and promotion of clean athletes, fair play and the integrity and authenticity of sport, the Rules of the Olympic Charter related to the organisation of the Olympic Games run counter to the recognition of the status of neutral athlete.”. However, it also said neither she nor any Russian athlete with a doping past would be eligible for the Games. Stepanov said he had never talked to IOC President Thomas Bach about the case. “Just one email exchange,” he said. There also had been “just one, one-hour conversation with one person from IOC Ethics Commission,” he added. “They write things like zero tolerance in doping but you don’t get that impression when you talk to people from IOC.” Doping would never be brought under control “until IOC members start caring about clean athletes and about clean sport and competition,” Stepanov said. He cautioned that the IOC’s stance on Russia was a green light to others engaged in doping. “If you are doping in a system that is similar to Russia, continue doing so because there is no reason to fight it because in the end the IOC will say they will not punish the system, but we will punish the whistleblower,” he said.

the IOC as an organisation.” Stepanov, who previously worked for Russia’s anti-doping agency, and his wife helped expose the doping scandal which threatened to exclude Russia from the Olympics. The couple now live in an undisclosed location in the United States, fearful for their lives. Stepanov said the invitation to travel to Rio to watch the Games left them cold. “I felt like, ‘Are you trying to buy us?’” he said. “Is that how IOC treats whistleblowers? Make them quiet by giving them IOC accreditation and access to VIP lounges.” A spokesman for the IOC could not be reached late on Monday for comment. The IOC’s decision not to impose a blanket ban on Russian athletes from the Rio Games, a ban which was requested by the World AntiDoping Agency (WADA), showed “the IOC is not a leader in sport movement,” Stepanov said. “It says strong words but it acts weak.” The couple have asked the IOC executive board (IOC EB) to review its decision. “(We) cannot but be very disappointed that the IOC EB has obviously not been given the correct information by the IOC Ethics Commission,” they said in a letter to IOC Director General Christophe de Kepper. Stepanov’s wife continues to train and was still hoping the IOC might change its mind, he said. “She will never win another medal. It’s more about her participating

IOC has ‘no interest in clean sport’
Moscow, Jul 26 (Agencies): A Russian whistleblower who helped uncover the biggest doping scandal in decades has told Reuters that the International Olympic Committee (IOC) is more concerned about protecting the organisation than ridding world sport of drugs cheats. A day after the IOC rejected a request by his wife, former Russian drugs cheat Yulia Stepanova, to run in the Rio Games as an independent athlete, Vitaly Stepanov said an invite to attend the Rio Games as spectators felt like they were being bought.
