hua quoted local Information and Public Relations Department as saying. The earthquake’s effects were felt in neighbouring Bangladesh and India’s northeast and Kolkata megapolis. According to the Indian Meteorological Department, the epicentre of the earthquake was at a point 190 km south of Myanmar’s Mandalay city and about 19 km west of Chauk town. The depth of the earthquake was 90 km. This is second time in two

days that tremors were felt in Myanmar. On Tuesday, a 5.5magnitude earthquake in the Myanmar-India border region also rocked Assam, Tripura, Mizoram, Meghalaya and some other parts of northeast India. However, there was no report of major damage. The quake, the strongest among the 26 quakes that have rocked the country since January 2016, is said to have damaged the building of the House of Nationalities in Nay Pyi Taw.

Kabul, Aug 25 (IANS): Twelve people were killed in an attack on the American University of Afghanistan in Kabul, a spokesman for the Chief of Kabul Police told CNN on Thursday. Seven students, three policemen and two security guards were killed in the attack on the American University campus, Basir Mujahid, the spokesman said. Thirty-five students and nine police were injured and about 750 students and staff were rescued, Kabul police chief Abdul Rahman Rahimi told the BBC. Police searched the American University of Afghanistan early Thursday about 10 hours after the assault began and killed two of the attackers who stormed the campus with guns and explosives. The gunmen detonated explosives and fired guns, witnesses said, causing some students and faculty to flee. Others hid inside buildings, a senior State Department official told CNN. No group has claimed responsibility. Police described the attack, which began at about 7

p.m., as “complex”. Special forces were on the scene along with American military advisers, the BBC said. One of those trapped inside the university for several hours was Massoud Hossaini, a Pulitzer Prize-winning photojournalist, who tweeted his experience and pleaded for help. Student Ahmad Mukhtar told the BBC that he was 100m away from the university’s main entrance on his way home when he heard “six or 10” shots and a “huge” blast. The explosion created so much light that it momentarily lit up the surrounding area, he said. “I climbed a six-metre wall to escape,” Ahmad said. Other trapped students and staff tweeted or posted on Facebook their desperate pleas for help. The attack comes two weeks after two university staff - one American, one Australian - were kidnapped by unknown gunmen. Their whereabouts remain unknown. The school opened in 2006. It’s the only private, nonprofit coed university in the country and has about 1,700 full- and part-time students, CNN reported.

Speaking on non-proliferation of weapons of mass destruction, Lodhi said Pakistan had implemented a comprehensive export control regime, participated in the Nuclear Security Summit process, ratified the 2005 amendment to the Convention on Physical Protection of Nuclear Material. Rome, Aug 25 (IANS): The death toll from the 6.2-magnitude earthquake that struck central Italy on Wednesday has risen to 247, according to Civil Protection Department officials on Thursday. More than 360 others were injured and many were still believed to be buried under rubble with over 4,300 rescuers deployed to find them, BBC quoted the department officials as saying. Health officials said the toll could rise as some of the injured were in critical conditions. The powerful earthquake hit 10 km southeast of Norcia at 3.36 a.m., on Wednesday. According to the department, majority of the deaths occurred in Rieti province with 190 victims and 57 in neighbouring Ascoli Piceno province, the BBC reported. Rescuers said they had pulled five bodies from the ruins of the Hotel Roma in the historic town of Amatrice. Officials said about 35 people were staying at the hotel and most had managed to get out.

cases against China, both in this country and at the World Trade Organisation (WTO),” Trump said. Trump further said he would instruct his treasury secretary to label China a “currency manipulator,” the greatest in the world”. “Any country that devalues their currency in order to take unfair advantage of the US and all of its companies who can’t compete will face tariffs and taxes to stop the cheating. And when they see that, they will stop the cheating,” he said. “China’s unfair subsidy and its behaviour is prohibited by the terms of its entrance into the WTO, and I intend to enforce our rules. That’s all. Very simple,” he added. “And they know it’s coming. They’ve called a lot of friends of mine. They know it’s coming. They say, “What do we do? What do we do?” If China does not stop its illegal activities — remember this. Our trade deficit with China is approximately $505 billion a year,” Trump said.

About 10 people were still unaccounted for, a local fire official said. Late on Wednesday there were cheers in the village of Pescara del Tronto when a young girl was pulled alive from the rubble after being trapped for 17 hours. Almost all the houses there had collapsed, the BBC reported citing local officials as saying. Hardest hit were the small towns and villages in the mountainous area where the regions of Umbria, Lazio and Le Marche meet. More than 1,000 people have been displaced by the quake and no residents were be allowed to sleep in the devastated town of Amatrice on Wednesday night. The mayor of Amatrice said three-quarters of the town had been destroyed and no building was safe for habitation, the BBC said. Many of those affected were on holiday in the region. Some were in Amatrice for a festival to celebrate a famous local speciality - amatriciana bacon and tomato sauce.

WASHINGTON, Aug 25 (PTI): Calling China the “worst abuser” and “currency manipulator”, Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump warned that if elected, he will identify all countries violating trade agreements and take serious actions against them. The 70-year-old real estate tycoon-turned-politician said he will instruct the US trade representative to bring trade cases against China, which is also building a “massive military fortress” in the strategic South China Sea. Trump said he would direct the secretary of commerce to identify every violation of trade agreements that a foreign country is currently using to harm American workers. “China is the worst abuser,” Trump said. “They have no respect for our country. BOGOTA/HAVANA, Aug 25 (Agencies): Colombia’s government and Marxist FARC rebels reached a final peace deal on Wednesday to end a five-decade war which once took the resource-rich country to the brink of collapse. Under the historic agreement to end one of the world’s longest conflicts, the Revo-

participation of FARC rebels in politics and the fact that they will not serve jail time for crimes committed during the war. “The future worries me,” said Susana Antequeria, 30, as she milled around the screen. “But I’ll put up with it for peace.” Under the deal, the FARC will have non-voting representation in Congress until 2018 and can participate in elections. From then on, the 7,000 former rebels will have to win votes like any other political party, Santos said. The final text of the deal will be sent to Colombia’s Congress on Thursday and will be available on the internet and social media, he said. “We have won the most beautiful of all battles” lead FARC negotiator Ivan Marquez said following the announcement in Havana on Wednesday. “The war with arms is over, now begins the debate of ideas.” The two sides had signed a ceasefire in late June.

“Colombians: the decision is in your hands. Never before have our citizens had within their reach the key to their future,” he said in a televised address. Most opinion polls suggest Colombians will back the deal but Santos, who has staked his legacy on peace, will face fierce opposition from powerful sectors of the country who believe the only solution is to finish the FARC militarily. The deal is opposed by two former Colombian presidents, including popular right-wing hardliner Alvaro Uribe. In Bogota, several hundred people gathered around a giant screen in the rain to listen to the announcement, waving Colombian flags and banners. “I’m so happy. It was time to end the war,” said Margarita Nieto, a 28-yearold accountant. “I know what is coming will be hard, but together we can cope.” Others are more skeptical about the terms of the agreement, especially the
