Bindra-led committee to review shooters’ poor show at Rio Olympics

NEW DELHI, AUG 24 (AGENCIES): PV Sindhu, badminton silver medallist at 2016 Rio Olympics, in an exclusive interview to NDTV cleared all air about her preference of a coach in her future endeavours. “For me, Gopichand is my best coach. Don’t want to comment on what minister said,” she said. Sindhu’s comments come after an excited Mehmood Ali, Telangana deputy chief minister, on Monday had said: “We are planning to give Sindhu proper training with foreign coach so that she can fetch gold next time.” PV Sindhu lost to Carolina Marin in the women’s singles final at Rio Olympics to settle for the silver medal. Before this Saina Nehwal’s bronze medal win was the best finish by an Indian badminton player at Olympics. Sindhu and her long-time coach Gopichand are still yet to cope with the numerous congratulatory messages and felicitations. “The celebrations were hectic. It was great and want to thank the governments of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana,” Sindhu said. However, Gopichand said that to achieve more Olympics medals, the system available to athletes need to improve. “ We d o n’ t h av e a great system. Medals are a byproduct of a good system. It’s not about a small group,” he said.

and dissect the reasons for this huge let-down from the shooting contingent. After fetching medals at each of the last three Games, India’s largest-ever shooting contingent returned empty-handed. The issue of shooters hiring personal coaches, the selection of shooters for multiple Olympics on reputation rather than form and the role of private non-profits like Olympic Gold Quest, Lakshya Foundation, Anglian Medal Hunt and Go Sports are issues likely to be investigated by the panel. Sources said the NRAI is keen to have the panel recommend that all shooting activity be centralised under the federation’s control. Besides Bindra, the committee is likely to comprise NRAI secretary Rajiv Bhatia, former national tennis champion Manisha Malhotra, and two journalists.

which organisers have denied. Koike, who was elected in July as Tokyo’s first female governor, has ordered officials to rein in ballooning costs and pledged a formal review, as concerns grow over soaring costs which could potentially double or even triple from the reported original forecast of USD 7.14 billion. The Games were awarded to Tokyo in 2013, with expectations that they would be a model of efficiency with the city touting itself as “peaceful, reliable, safe, and stable”. Tokyo’s metropolitan conurbation is the world’s largest with more than 35 million people, but streets are safe, trains run on time and the air is clean. And with strict gun control and a public honesty visitors find disarming, few people ever experience serious crime. The games in Brazil -which is embroiled in a political crisis over the impeachment of suspended president Dilma Rousseff -- suffered its own series of setbacks. Tourists, officials and athletes have had to dodge the scenic city’s notorious street crime, structural problems inside the Olympic Village were a challenge and the Olympic diving pool turned green.

Rio Olympics inspired mural sets new Guinness WR Rio de Janeiro, Aug 24 (IANS): The Rio 2016 Summer Olympics, which concluded earlier this week with 65 new Olympic and 19 new world records in the sports field, now also has another record for the world’s largest street mural created by an artist. At 15.5m tall and 170m long, the work of art is nearly 3,000 square meters in size. Brazilian graffiti artist Eduardo Kobra painted this massive work of art along the promenade here and now it is recognised as the largest of its kind in the world. The work, titled “We Are All One,” shows five faces representing five main ethnic groups from five continents. It means to resemble the official Olympic symbol - the five Olympic rings - the 39-year-old, Sao Paulo born muralist told Efe on Tuesday. To accomplish the mural, it took 180 buckets of acrylic paint and 2,800 cans of spray paint as well as seven hydraulic lifts, Guinness World Records said in a statement. The mural by Brazil’s most renowned street artist became another attraction of the Olympic Boulevard. Kobra began this work in early July with three team members and finished the gigantic mural on August 2, three days ahead of the opening ceremony of the 2016 edition of the Games.

New Delhi, Aug 24 (PTI): The Sports Ministry on Tuesday constituted a twomember committee to probe the allegations of official apathy levelled by marathon runner O.P. Jaisha, who claims to have been denied water refreshment during her event at the Rio Olympic Games. Jaisha, who finished 89th in the marathon, has alleged that no water or energy drinks were made available by the Indian officials during her event, leaving her completely exhausted at the end of the race. She had fainted after crossing the finishing line. The Athletics Federation of India (AFI), however, has asserted that the athlete herself refused any such arrangement when approached on the eve of the event.

She even took her books to Rio so that she could be prepared for this exam during the long break in between her event. Her mother Gouri said: “My daughter always says sports is in its place and education is in its place. She says she has to get a degree.” From fellow examinees there was admiration for her dedication to sports and academics. A young man who also appeared for the exam with Dipa, told NDTV, “In our country people are usually given a choice between sports and academics.

Feyisa Lilesa crossed his arms as a protest against the Ethiopian government.

Addis Ababa, Aug 24 (Agencies): Olympic marathon silver medallist Feyisa Lilesa failed to return to Ethiopia on Monday night despite assurances he would not be punished for his Rio 2016 Games protest over political repression in his country. An AFP journalist at the airport in Addis Ababa said Lilesa was not onboard the plane that landed on Monday night carrying Ethiopia’s Olympics team. Ethiopian sports officials congratulated team members but made no mention of Lilesa’s silver medal achievement -- one of only eight medals won by Ethiopia -- and refused

to answer any questions about the athlete. On Sunday, Lilesa, who came second to Kenyan favourite Eliud Kipchoge in Rio, crossed his arms as he finished the marathon in a symbolic protest against the repressive Ethiopian regime. The 26-yearold repeated the gesture during the race’s medal ceremony, telling reporters later that he was afraid to go back to his homeland. Reports have suggested that the runner may seek political asylum in the United States, but a spokesperson for the US State Department refused to talk specifically about the case.

N e w D e l h i , Au g 2 4 (Agencies): The National Rifle Association of India (NRAI) has come up with a proposal to set up a special committee, to be headed by Olympic champion Abhinav Bindra, to carr y out a comprehensive review of the shooters’ below-par performance at the Rio Games. Indian shooters proved to be an epic failure in a disastrous Rio Olympic Games as the 12-member team, with the exce ption of Bindra, failed miserably to live up to the sky-high expectations. This has left the country’s shooting fraternity highly disappointed. “NRAI is to shortly announce the formation of an independent committee to anlyse the performance of the Indian shooting team at the Rio Olympics and fix

Abe came out from a pipe after a video showed plumber Mario drilling down from Tokyo into the earth to reach Brazil. “I wanted to show Japan’s soft power to the world with the help of Japanese characters,” Abe told reporters. “I wasn’t sure how the audience would react.
