The “memory palace” is a tool used to construct and reorganized memories form the site. This ties to a strategy we wish to follow, investigating the relationship between memory, death and the cemetery. Such as memories are without scale the device is a-physical, it does however highlight relationships.
“The art of memory is any number of a loosely associated mnemonic principles and techniques used to organize memory impressions, improve recall, and assist in the combination and ‘invention’ of ideas.”
In this exercise each wrote in his own native language a memory depicted by the Memory palace. Later we translated those and shared our experiences with each other.

A small ugly hotel indicates to worth three starts, this cannot be remotely true. This corner is the only place spot one can get the feel for the cemetery as part of the city. There is one big tree here and not much more. Some people sit on the bench but quickly they continue somewhere else. Some information about the cemetery is illustrated on a wall, one map, nothing fence.

The corner, the “three stars” hotel. The outer physical appearance showed no great quality. A curious element was the porch to the outside with only one chair, reminded me of the old houses in the areas of countryside in Spain. I kept wanting to go to the roof of the hotel, I’m sure it has spectacular views of Trumpeldor, it could had been a new perspective to understand the relationship with the surroundings.

A black cut sitting on the warm pavement absorbing the sun. It seems as if we entered his domain, he doesn’t mind us much. I find pleasure walking between the graves, in this part of the cemetery it is a type of a game where I have to anticipate deadens and plan accordingly. I find it a lot of fun, sorts of an experience were I can choose to get lost but also look up for references.

El laberinto. El desorden, la imperfección, en cierta manera, reflejaba la historia y evolución del pueblo. Jerarquía de tumbas, diferentes colores, tamaños, algunas solitarias, otras acompañadas, anónimas, con nombres, cuidadas o abandonadas, en definitiva, variedad. La zona del pueblo, de la gente de la ciudad, refleja la realidad.

“The labyrinth. The disorder, imperfection, in a way, it reflects the history and development of the people. Hierarchy of tombs, different colors, sizes, some solitary, others accompanied, anonymous, names, maintained or abandoned, in conclusion, variety. The area of the city habitants, the people of the city, reflects reality.”

I remember Almudena sitting in the corner and drawing. Standing there I was interested by the luck of transition between the graveyard and the apartment’s facing it. I find myself both like and dislike it. What I certainty like is the solitude of the corner and the bridge I went through to get here. There is a light breeze going through the tree, and some birds here and there.

La butaca. La esquina escondida, sólo los que se adentran de verdad descubren este secreto. La silla de la lectura, como si leyésemos en alto a los que nos han dejado pero queremos mantenerlos distraidos.

The armchair. The hidden corner reviled to those willing to explore, like a hidden secret. The reading chair, to read to those who are gone and share the beauty of the text and the space.

Every time we enter the cemetery through the main (the only gate) I get a strong sense of optimism and possibilities. When I think about it at home I’m baffled about what can we do here.

La entrada real. Impoluta, la cara al público, no refleja la realidad de Trumpeldor. Es la única entrada activa, la única que funciona. Gran apertura con una verja de metal oscuro. Situada en el medio de la muralla, será una posición estratégica.

“The royal entry” Pristine, face to the public, does not reflect the reality of Trumpeldor. Is the only one active that function. Big opening with steel gate. Located in the middle of the wall, maybe is a strategy.

I wonder if Almudena likes this place, I personally think it is very unique. There is high level of activity as often associated with places with warm weather. I also remember being puzzled by the new skyscrapers being built here along side some of the oldest buildings of the city. I question weather this change is necessary, and will it effect the historic significance of this area.

La esencia de Tel Aviv. No conoces la ciudad hasta que no te adentras en estas pequeñas calles, aquí es donde consigue enamorarte. Casas antiguas, pequeñas, con alguna muestra de Bauhaus. Reflejan vida. Recuerdo que aquí fue cuando dije, Tel Aviv es bonita, no es la belleza física de las grandes calles lo que te engancha, son los detalles escondidos en estos laberintos de viviendas.

The essence of Tel Aviv. You do not know the city until you get deeper in these small streets. Here is where visitors get to fall in love with it. Old houses, small, some of them with sample of Bauhaus. Reflecting life. The moment we were in this area is when I realize about the real beauty of Tel Aviv, it is not physical attractive in the big streets which hooks you, is the details that are hidden in these labyrinths housing.

6. איור מה המשמעות של התופעה הזו לבית הקברות? לדעתי,שדרות רוטשילד מלאות חיים לפני משספר שנים התמקמו.חייבת להיות משמעות מבחינת אנרגיות ושיתופיות מסויימת כאן צעירים שצעקו על יוקר המחייה בישראל אם לא נמצאים כאן היות ואני טועה מה ה. מספר אנשים הולכים ברחוב עם כלביהם או רוכבים על אופניים.קרה מאז

The main avenue of Rothschild is very active it reminds me of the time many tents were erected here to protest quality of life in Israel mostly by young adults. Today they are not here anymore but I wonder whether they succeeded or not. I like the activity of the avenue the noises, some walk their dogs, some ride their cycles.

El gran bulevar. Amplitud, cuidado, con árboles que te dan la sensación de que está cubierto. Dos colores, naranja y verde. A los laterales las casas tenían algunos detalles interesantes, fue cuando hablamos de que no me gustaría vivir en un primero por la falta de intimidad. Muy transitada.

The grand boulevard. Amplitude, maintained with trees giving you the feeling that you are covered. Two colors: orange and green. A side houses had some interesting details, when we talk about was that I would not live in a first for the lack of intimacy. Busy.

The inside wall to the North is just tall enough, at about 1.8 meters. With its proximity to the other buildings I find it almost unnecessary. At some sections of it I look through the cracks and see gardens and lazy-chairs. I wonder how often the people on the other side take a walk here, I think I would do it often its quite unique here, very private.

La muralla trasera. Es el muro de la historia, con roturas, suciedad, naturaleza que intenta colarse, refleja el verdadero estado de Trumpeldor. Sigue la topografía, está como escalonada. Piedra grisacea. En el medio tiene una pequeña apertura, como si de la entrada de los gatos se tratase. Detrás de ella se ve vida. Es el guardián más antiguo de las tumbas.

The rear wall. The history´s wall, with tears, dirt, and vegetation trying to sneak in; it reflects the true state of Trumpeldor. It follows the topography, you can see it in the different heights. Grayish stone. In the medium has a small aperture, like input jacks in question. Behind her is wild/the city life. It is the oldest guardian of the graveyard.

The Western side of the cemetery is the most animated, I see people go there directly as if the North and East areas do not exist. It is certainly the most green and cared for and perhaps with good reasons. The greenery brings many sounds and animals. Such as me they find comfort in the shade. I do feel a sense of respect for those unique ones buried here but also how at peace I feel in the Eastern part.

El famoseo. La zona limpia, ordenada, “perfecta”. Es como si en la buena zona con sombra y árboles se encontrase la gente con dinero, las personalidades. Me llamó menos la atención que la zona de arriba, aquí apenas ves tumbas anónimas. También observé variedad, pero menos marcada. Ves algunas tumbas distintas de artistas que intentan transmitir su arte en el estilo de la tumba, o al menos, sus familiares.

The celebrities’ section. Clean area, tidy, “perfect”. The “good” area with shadows and vegetation is reserved for people with money and personalities. But because I couldn´t read the graves I founded less attractive than the upstairs area. I also observed range, but less marked. I was interested by some of the artists’ tombs where it seems like they are trying to convey his art in the style of the grave, or at least their families.

The center of Habima is famous and beautiful but for me it has to do more with my sister. She used to live here and I’m familiar with this side of the city. The public space is vast; the whiteness of the floor and architecture is beautiful but also blinding. It is mostly a starting point for a trip in the avenue, an anchor in the city from which several important spaces radiate.

La casa de la música, es como la recuerdo. Maravillosa la plaza y el jardín de la música, gente sentada, jóvenes, adultos, de todas las edades. Blanco, limpio, nuevo. El jardín era de madera, muy estructurado. Recuerdo el calor que sentía siempre al salir del parque, el sol era fuerte en esa zona.

The house of music, that’s how I remember it, I always forget the name. The square and the wonderful garden of music, people sitting, young adults, of all ages. White, clean, new. The garden was made of wood, very structured, I really liked the design and idea of it. I remember the heat I always felt when we used to go out of the parking, I was really happy to be warm again, to feel the sun.

I can not see the sea but in Tel Aviv I’m always aware of it. It makes everything a bit different maybe happier as I know that this strong element always stand in relation to where I’m right now. In my mind the cemetery is on a path towards the water and the vastness of it, the sunsets and the evening breeze, the constant parallel activity to it.

El mar. Yo no lo sentí cuando estábamos en el cementerio, sabía que estaba allí porque lo visitamos el día anterior, sino no lo hubiese averiguado.

The sea. I did not feel it when we were at the cemetery, I knew it was there because we visited the day before. Always relate the sea with leisure, vacation, and when I was on Trumpeldor that was the last things that came to mind. Neither I could recognized the typical smell of moisture we have on the coast of Denia where we usually expend the summer.

I remember being surprised, I wasn’t expecting us to find a dog park on the other side of the fence. It gave me a reassuring feeling. The kind man I talked to was very worried and protective. He was concerned about the little space the city offer for his dog and other dog owners. I sympathize with him and think how odd is it to have a cemetery on one side and dogs running around on the other.

El escondite de los perros. Es donde pueden ser libres dentro de la ciudad, solo hay que ver la felicidad de esos animales cuando llegan a la puerta de su zona para estar sin correa. Tan lejos pero a la vez tan cerca del cementerio, cuando estás en el parque no sabes que lo que está al otro lado es el cementerio y viceversa. No hay mejo vecino para ambos. Al final del parque había una puerta como en la muralla del cementerio, siempre tuve la curiosidad de acercarme, pero por no querer invadir el espacio del grupo de dueños y perros no entré.

The stash for dogs. It’s where they can be free within the city, just look at the happiness of these animals when they arrive at the door of this area and off leash. So far yet so close to the cemetery, when you’re in the park you don´t get the feeling of what is on the other side. There is not better neighbor for both. At the end of the park was a door in the wall of the cemetery, I was always curious to get close, but not wanting to invade. space of the group of

The Western corner is very strange. The cemetery is being funneled in to this corner that is not unique or significant to me. In this corner I feel the city to overcome the cemetery. For that reason I’m happy that the small gate here is closed.

La tumba de Arik Einstein. Todo el mundo preguntaba por ella, mucha gente solo iba para visitar específicamente el lugar para recordar a uno de sus artistas favoritos. Recuerdo que el último día, un hombre puso su movil en la tumba con una de las canciones de Arik, y fumando un cigarro le recordaba mientras sonaba su música. Fue curioso, cada uno le recuerda a su manera.

Ariks Einstein’s grave. Everyone was looking for it, many people just going to specifically visit the site to remember one of their country favorite artists. The last day on site, a man listened to one of Arik’s song while smoking a cigar. It was curious, each people remember and shows respect in different way.

I don’t remember this area to be distinctive or one I wanted to stay at for long. What fascinated me was to see how the branches cracked some graves. I remember thinking about the immense ability of the tree to emerge out of the soil and consuming the graves on its path.

La naturaleza vetada, parece que como eran más bien arbustos en vez de grandes árboles no tenían el privilegio de cruzar la muralla.

The vetoed nature, it seems like because it is more shrubs rather than tall and beautiful trees, it doesn´t have the privilege of crossing the wall.

The wall is about two times my height, I don’t find it particularly beautiful and I’m astonished by how narrow the pavement is. I find myself trapped between the wall to my right and the wall of cars to my left. Suddenly we reach the main entrance.

La cara al público, todo es estética. Piedra perfecta pero que al final parece incluso artificial. La altura separa completamente el cementerio de la calle. No hay espacio de acera, es mínimo. El color es claro rosado.

The face to the public, it is all aesthetics. Perfect stone but in the end seems even artificial. The height completely separates the cemetery from the street. Sidewalk space is minimal. The color is light pink.

We never entered the small grocery store but for some reason I remember it to be important. I think it highlights the sharp contrast between the normal life of the city and the staticness of the cemetery.

Frutas y verduras. De esta zona yo recuerdo más los edificios de el otro lado de la acera, abandonados. No recuerdo tanto el comercio, será porque no era muy activo.

Fruits and vegetables. In this area I remember mostly the buildings across the street, abandoned; not much the trade, maybe it is because it was not very active.

The large avenue begins with a small cafe. A lot of people sit here and chat, they enjoy the city outdoors. It is the starting point of a rout towards the cemetery. Along the path I look at building to the left and right. After few minutes of walking the avenue become narrower, in order to reach the cemetery we take a left turn leaving the main road to a smaller street with mainly apartment buildings.

Los comercios. La zona más transitada, todos los bajos de los edificios son locales comerciales; cafés, tiendas de ropa, galerías, mobiliario, textiles...

The shops. Busiest area, all ground floors of the buildings are commercial; cafes, shops, galleries, furniture, textiles ... I remember going to spend there free time I had one of the last days, nice cafes. I experimented the feeling of contrast of chaos in this area and calmness in the cemetery.
