Our Hypnosis practice encompasses traditional services, plus: ◆ Past Age, Life and Between Lives Counseling ◆ Akashic Record Travel Resolving Physical and Emotional Issues Arthur Gutkin dreamt four years ago that he would awake as a Traveler of the Akashic Record and a Healer. During meditation, Art travels the Akashic Record and experiences memories of his clients, from Past Ages, Lives, the Womb, and the formative years. These memories, many repressed, often unlock the causes of long term illnesses, both physical and emotional. Art’s unique form of hypnosis,“Integrated Regression Healing,” helps adults overcome those debilitating memories. Additionally, Art lays hands on people who have suffered pain for years, who then, within minutes, feel relief and greater range of motion.

Art has successfully Laid Hands on People with... ◆ Cancer ◆ Multiple Sclerosis ◆ Muscular Dystrophy ◆ Depression ◆ Chronic Pain ◆ Arthritis ◆ Paralysis ◆ Intestinal Issues ◆ Many Other Diseases Art, personally trained by a world renowned Past Life Hypnotherapist, specializes in Past Life, Age, Womb and Between Lives Therapy. Art’s clients meet Guides and Judges after learning life lessons while traveling their Past Lives and Between Lives. Art, when needed during Womb, Past Life, and Between Life Travels, combines Hands-on Healing with his unique Regression Therapy releasing physical and emotional issues associated with earlier negative Karma. “Distance Healing from Art was extremely beneficial to me. The MS symptoms of fatigue and muscle pain/cramping I had were greatly diminished. This after just the first session! The postural orthostatic tachycardia condition I had was made better and almost completely eliminated after just 3 sessions. I found my cognitive function to be better as well and even a sensitivity to magnesium stearate was basically eliminated. I very much recommend this form of healing energy from Art to anyone looking for a good ‘boost’ and relief from various symptoms.” -Jeanette Raynor, Rhode Island “15 years ago I had a car accident and was never pain free until Art laid hands on my back for less than five minutes. On his way out of my house, he saw my dog, Buster, who was dying from brain disease. He laid hands on Buster. Within a day, Buster was acting like a puppy.” - Ray Adkins, Pottstown, PA

letterfrompublisher In the United States today we are living

longer and more vital lives than ever before, thanks to developments in medicine, exercise science and nutrition. For many, “60 is the new 40” really does hold true. Millions of us are working, playing, traveling and taking on new projects and explorations well into what was once considered advanced age. Adding decades to the life cycle is at once exciting and uniquely challenging for women. As we morph from young women to mid-life and then into maturity, our experiences physically and emotionally shift as well. As our bodies change, we need to change how we treat our bodies. From the kinds of lotions and cosmetics we use, to the kinds of foods, supplements and herbs we take, to the kinds of exercise and relaxation we do, each time we shift into a new cycle, we’re called upon to curate a revised self-care regimen that’s tailored to who we are now. At 38, I’m closer to middle age than any other. Still, it was disappointing when I realized recently that the hard-core style of yoga I’d loved since my 20s no longer felt right for my life now as a busy, working mom. Like breaking up with a friend or lover when both parties realize it’s time, I felt a sense of loss that something that had been so nourishing for so long suddenly felt depleting. Hard as it was to accept, I realized that the process of embracing those shifts and finding my way to new lifestyle choices was core to staying true and present to myself at each turn in the road. In this year’s Women’s Wellness issue we celebrate the journey to maturity by exploring some of the most prevalent wellness concerns for women who are living in their 40s, 50s, 60s and 70s as comfortably and vitally as possible. One of our focuses is on the variety of current holistic and traditional treatment options available for managing the hormonal changes brought on by menopause. We also talk about sexuality, with the recognition that, just as with everything else in our lives, what turns us on physically and mentally is fluid and ever-changing; we discuss how we can lovingly address a decreased libido and feel more vitally connected with our sexual energy. As for me, I’ve found a Mommy and Me yoga class that I’ve just started with baby Asa, and I’ve been thumbing through our Calendar of Events, circling and dog-earing for Spring. In the Natural Awakenings network where personal growth and expansion are always on the agenda, I have no doubt that I’ll find the practices and routines that will nourish and inspire the me in this moment, and the next. I’m thankful this month and all months for you all—my sisters, mothers and aunties in community here—for your company and camaraderie as we ripen into ourselves, again and again. With you in Awakening,

Y

oga on Main, in Manayunk, is presenting a 500hour ayurveda certification training beginning July 30 and continuing through November, 2017. The curriculum is modeled on the healing distance course designed and taught by David Frawley, of the American Institute of Vedic Studies, and will be taught in a classroom-style setting by master teacher Ed Zadlo. “Ayurveda is the traditional healing system of India and is the oldest system of natural health care in continuous practice in the world,” teaches Zadlo. “An increasing number of people are turning to natural health, and specifically to this ancient blend of yoga, meditation, herbal medicine and dietary advice, to recover from illness and to stay healthy.” Ed Zadlo Successful completion of this course will allow students to gain certification as an Ayurvedic Life-Style Counselor, and will give them the option for further training and study in ayurveda and vedic sciences. Students will receive a comprehensive survey of ayurvedic anatomy and physiology, diagnosis, nutrition, herbal therapy, aromas, yoga, psychology and spirituality. There are no prerequisites for enrollment. “Ayurveda is an individually oriented medicine that emphasizes the effects of diet, lifestyle and psychology on health and disease prevention,” Zadlo explains. Students engaged in this program will develop the skills and knowledge to determine imbalances relative to the doshas of vata, pitta and kapha of the ayurvedic system, and to make appropriate dietary, herbal and lifestyle recommendations to deal with primary doshic imbalances. “The teaching is rooted in classical texts, but we see the need to adapt ayurveda for our changing times, which present many new health challenges,” Zadlo points out. “The field has much to offer in terms of methods that we can use here and now.” Ed Zadlo, D.Ay, is a certified ayurveda practitioner; yoga-ayurveda therapist; and expert teacher, or acharya, of yoga/vedanta, ayurveda and vedic dharma. He has been teaching for over 25 years. Zadlo was both a graduate and a faculty member of the New England Institute of Ayurvedic Medicine before completing advanced clinical study at the Rishikesh College of Ayurveda, in Rishikesh, India. He then studied ayurvedic healing with Dr. David Frawley, director of the American Institute of Vedic Studies, earning certification from him as an ayurveda yoga acharya with 1200 hours of advanced integral yoga/ayurveda study. Zadlo is a professional member of the National Ayurvedic Medical Association (NAMA) and is the first certified Acharya of Integral Ayurveda/Yoga Therapy. Cost: $3,500, with an early-bird discount available through May 30. Payment plans available. Location: 4363 Main St., Manayunk, the home-studio of Zadlo, YOM founder and master teacher David Newman, and managing partner/master teacher Shiva Das. May classes include a Liver Rinse session on May 12—an introductory regimen for those interested in learning the why and how of liver cleansing—and a month-long Function with Food Detox program for new and existing clients interested in a seasonally appropriate cleanse, which begins May 23. Starting June 1, Fleck will present “B3 Metabolic Roadmap: A Beginner’s Small Group Nutrition” and “Exercise Program with Body by Brent”, a four-week introductory program blending functional nutrition with exercise. Two classes per week will be offered: one will focus on nutrition and will be held at Functional Origins, in Perkasie, and the other will focus on exercise and will be held at B3 Personal Training, in Doylestown. Fleck is a registered and licensed dietitian-nutritionist who blends this training with functional medicine to create individualized nutrition plans tailored toward the whole self. “In my practice, we work beyond the ‘conventional nutrition bubble’ and think about health functionally and holistically. We address nutrition from its roots rather than a ‘Band-Aid approach’ that just manages symptoms through diet without resolving the core issues,” says Fleck. natural childbirth experience. “For many generations we have been told that having a baby involves many hours of painfully agonizing work, an experience to be faced with fear and trepidation,” explains Moore, a certified yoga teacher, nationally certified hypnotherapist and Venice nutrition coach. “Fear in labor can create tension, which creates pain, then more fear, and the cycle continues. Fear and anxiety can also increase adrenaline production in the body, causing the labor to become dysfunctional.” Moore continues, “Hypnosis for childbirth teaches a woman how to enter into self-hypnosis instantly, and create her own natural anesthesia whenever and wherever she needs it. She has total control over her body and is an active participant in her birthing process. As labor progresses, she relaxes even more, trusting in her body’s natural ability to give birth with ease. Her mind is trained to give her exactly what she needs.” Moore used hypnosis techniques for childbirth personally before and during the birth of her daughter. The experience of giving birth naturally, with less pain, within a few hours of being admitted to the hospital inspired her to bring this offering to other women wanting a more engaged, peaceful birth experience with fewer drugs and interventions.

Ocean Land Trust, Inc., is offering property for home building in The Waverly, a new Earth-friendly, sustainable alternative to the more traditional high-impact coastal developments, in Machipongo, along Virginia’s scenic Chesapeake Bay shoreline. The 23 separate land parcels, ranging from three to 22 acres, are especially well suited for family compounds, organic farms and horses. The land is on high ground, well protected from coastal storms and flooding, has rich fertile farming soils and has an aquifer with abundant pure water. Amenities include paved roads, utilities, common areas, private beach, community boat dock and launch ramp. Wineries, food co-ops, organic farms and several miles of riding trails are all located nearby. The property provides an “ideal warm growing climate with the Gulf Stream just offshore, says Ben Benson of Ocean Land Trust. He adds that The Waverly is ideal for people that want to “enjoy their land for vacations now (as camping and RVs are allowed) and then retirement later.

healthbriefs MAGNESIUM IMPROVES CHILDBIRTH FOR MOTHER AND NEWBORN

R

esearch presented at the annual meeting of the American Society of Anesthesiologists has found that magnesium reduces fevers during childbirth, as well as complications among newborns. The study followed 63,000 deliveries from Northwestern Memorial Hospital, in Chicago, between 2007 and 2014. Of these, 6,163 women developed fevers of at least 100.4° F during labor. Of the women that developed fevers, 2,190 received magnesium sulfate intravenously during their labor. Rates of fever at maternity dropped by half, to 4.3 percent, in women that received the magnesium, versus 9.9 percent in those that did not. The rate of newborn complications was also significantly lower among women given magnesium. The study, led by Dr. Elizabeth Lange, an attending physician at Northwestern Memorial Hospital, is the first of its kind to investigate the effect of magnesium on childbirth. “By reducing the incidence of maternal fever, magnesium sulfate therapy may also reduce the incidence of complications in newborns,” says Lange.

RED CLOVER GUARDS AGAINST MENOPAUSAL BONE LOSS

A

12-week study of 60 menopausal women in Denmark has found that red clover halted bone loss and bone mineral density reduction. The randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled research, sponsored by the Aarhus University Medical School and Hospital, tested the women over a three-month period. Half were treated with 150 milliliters of red clover extract daily and the others were given a placebo. The red clover plant extract was standardized to 37 milligrams of isoflavones, including 34 milligrams of aglycones. The scientists measured changes in bone mineral density, bone mineral content and T-score, measured at the spine and femoral bone. They also monitored bone turnover markers. By the end of the study, the women in the placebo group had continued to lose bone mass and bone mineral density. Those given the red clover extract showed no such reductions during the study period. In addition, the red clover group experienced no increase in inflammation or blood pressure.

LEGUMES KEEP COLORECTAL CANCER AT BAY

K

orean medical school scientists have found that those eating more legumes have a significantly reduced risk of colorectal cancer. Their research analyzed the diets of 3,740 people, including 901 colorectal cancer patients. A total of 106 different foods were graded and calculated to establish frequency of intake among the study participants. The group that consumed the highest amounts of legumes had more than a 50 percent drop in incidence of colorectal cancer. As legume consumption increased, colorectal cancer risk decreased. The researchers attributed the dramatic reduction in risk to the intake of isoflavones, contained in many nuts and beans. When intakes of total isoflavones were calculated, those with diets that contained the highest levels reduced their colorectal cancer risk, by 33 percent in men and 35 percent in women. The researchers reported, “The reduced risks for colorectal cancer among high-intake groups were most consistent for legumes and sprouts.”

Toxic GMO Pesticides Drift Near Athletic Fields In an Environmental Working Group (EWG) survey, more than 90 percent of athletic fields and parks in six sample states are within 1,000 feet of a corn or soybean field where two toxic weed killers, glyphosate and 2,4-D, are commonly sprayed on genetically modified (GMO) corn, soybeans and other crops, meaning that nearby athletes are likely to be exposed. More than 56 percent of the facilities in the study were within 200 feet of such farmland. Corn and soybean farmers in at least 15 states now have the option of planting GMO crops that can withstand repeated spraying with Monsanto’s glyphosate and the 2,4-D mixture sold by Dow AgroSciences under the brand name Enlist Duo. Sprayed herbicides readily drift through the air, potentially exposing people and the nearby environment. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency approved the use of Enlist Duo for GMO crops shortly before the World Health Organization concluded that glyphosate, the world’s most widely used herbicide, is “probably carcinogenic to humans.” Dow’s 2,4-D also possibly causes cancer, according to leading experts; exposure has also been linked to Parkinson’s disease, hypothyroidism and suppression of the human immune system. Goat Groundskeepers

A Chew Crew Gobbles Up Invasive Species The Historic Congressional Cemetery, permanent resting place of J. Edgar Hoover, John Philip Sousa and 68,000 others, is threatened by invasive species such as poison ivy, poison oak, poison sumac, kudzu and English ivy. “They are plants not native to Washington, D.C.,” says Paul Williams, president of the cemetery. “They climb and kill our trees, which then fall onto the cemetery, damaging our headstones.” Instead of using harmful herbicides that could become runoff into the nearby Anacostia River, managers have enlisted a herd of 30 goats to combat the problem. The arrangement lets the native plants grow to support pollinating insects. The University of Georgia’s Chew Crew, comprising 40 goats, is likewise tasked with getting rid of invasive species growing around urban streams on its campus, another example of the elegant, lowtech solution. Maintaining steep inclines and other hard-to-reach areas can be expensive when using toxic herbicides and physical labor. After seeing the success of the Chew Crew, Clemson University is now also using goats to naturally recover some of the more overgrown areas of its campus. Source: CNN 14

Women Power Feminists Redefine Senior Housing

Fifteen years in the making, the Babayagas’ House—a feminist alternative to a retirement home— has opened in Paris. This selfmanaged social housing project is run by its community of inspired female senior citizens that want to maintain their independence. “To live long is a good thing, but to age well is better,” says 85-year-old Thérèse Clerc, who initially conceived the project as a means of combating the idea that growing old is an illness and that retirement homes are a kind of prison. “We want to change the way people see old age, and that means learning to live differently,” she says. The five-story building houses 25 apartments located at the center of Montreuil, just blocks away from shops, a movie theater and the metro. The project cost just under $4.4 million and was funded by eight public sources, including the city council. Two similar projects are now underway in Palaiseau and Bagneux. Source: Bust.com

Salmon Scam

Farmed Fish Mislabeled as Wild-Caught The nonprofit Oceana reveals that salmon, America’s favorite fish, is often mislabeled in restaurants and grocery stores. They collected 82 salmon samples from restaurants and grocery stores between December 2013 and March 2014 and found that 43 percent were mislabeled. DNA testing confirmed that the majority of the mislabeling (69 percent) consisted of farmed Atlantic salmon being sold as a wild-caught product. “Americans might love salmon, but as our study reveals, they may be falling victim to a bait-andswitch,” says Beth Lowell, a senior campaign director with Oceana. “Not only are consumers getting ripped off, but responsible U.S. fishermen are being cheated when fraudulent products lower the price for their hard-won catch.” Kimberly Warner, Ph.D., the report’s author and a senior scientist at Oceana, observes, “While U.S. fishermen catch enough salmon to satisfy 80 percent of our domestic demand, 70 percent of that catch is then exported, instead of going directly to American grocery stores and restaurants.” Source: Oceana.org

SPARK UP YOUR LOVE LIFE Natural Ways to Boost Libido by Lisa Marshall

U

nderlying health issues aside, a hectic schedule packed with work deadlines, kids’ sporting events and household chores can leave little time for intimacy. Letting that pattern go on too long can become a problem. “There’s a use-it-or-lose-it phenomenon that occurs,” says Dr. Anita Clayton, a University of Virginia psychiatry professor, neurologist and author of Satisfaction: Women, Sex, and the Quest for Intimacy. Despite what hyper-seductive female media stereotypes suggest we believe, in the real world, 39 percent of women feel they lack sex drive, and nearly half experience some kind of sexual dissatisfaction, according to a survey of 32,000 women published in the journal Obstetrics & Gynecology. About one in eight women are significantly distressed about it. “The truth is, many of us don’t have great sex lives,” confirms Clayton. Sprout Pharmaceuticals introduced Addyi, aka filbanserin, last fall; the first prescription drug to address low libido in women. Some heralded the controversial medication as “the little pink pill,” seeing it as the female version of males’ blue Viagra pill, which a halfmillion men purchased in its first month on the market in 1998. Yet several

16

months after its launch, only about 1,000 women had tried Addyi and many doctors declined to prescribe it, due to its lack of widespread efficacy and possible adverse side effects, including low blood pressure and fainting when combined with alcohol. “This is a complex problem that requires a complex solution,” says Honolulu-based naturopathic physician Laurie Steelsmith, author of Great Sex Naturally: Every Woman’s Guide to Enhancing Her Sexuality Through the Secrets of Natural Medicine. “For most women, drugs are not the answer.” She notes that for men, boosting libido is largely a matter of boosting circulation and blood flow to the penis. But for women, desire for lovemaking stems from an interplay of emotional, interpersonal, hormonal and anatomical drivers that make lack of desire harder to “treat”. The truth is that many simple, effective, non-drug approaches exist. As Boulder, Colorado, marriage therapist Michele Weiner Davis puts it, “There’s no reason why a woman wanting a more robust sex life cannot have one.”

Overall Health Check

The number one culprit for low libido in women is subpar physical health, says Steelsmith. “To be capable of fully

NABuxMont.com

enjoying pleasure, you need a healthy body.” Carrying excess weight can both erode self-esteem and lead to reductions in a woman’s natural circulating testosterone, a critical hormone that helps ignite pleasure circuits in the female brain and increase sensitivity in the clitoris. Being underweight can result in fatigue and low sexual energy, diminished production of excitatory brain chemicals and low levels of estrogen, key for keeping a woman moist. Meanwhile, Steelsmith explains, excess stress can prompt the body to “steal” from libido-boosting hormones like progesterone in order to make more of the stress-hormone cortisol. High blood sugar can drive down testosterone, while high cholesterol can clog pelvic blood vessels, dulling sensation. Depression, diabetes and thyroid disorders are other major libido killers, says Clayton. “If you treat them effectively, you may see big improvements.” Women seeking to improve their sexual health should first try to achieve a healthy weight via diet and exercise, Steelsmith says. She recommends an organic diet rich in complex carbohydrates (which keep blood sugar balanced), lean protein (a precursor to desire-related neurotransmitters) and good fats (which help keep vulval tissues lubricated). Exercise—another circulation booster—is also key. Do it before a scheduled hot date for even better results. One 2014 study of 52 women found that those that worked out prior to an anticipated romantic encounter had significantly increased sexual desire.

Pamper Femaleness

Many women avoid sexual encounters for fear of sparking a urinary tract or vaginal infection. This becomes more common after age 40, as estrogen wanes and pelvic tissue thins and dries, leaving it more vulnerable to microbial invaders. Because semen is alkaline, it changes a woman’s vaginal pH, allowing unfriendly bacteria to thrive, says Steelsmith. Her advice: Always go to the bathroom and urinate after intercourse, and use natural lubricants, like vitamin E. For some women, she also recommends low-dose, prescription estrogen cream or suppositories.

If an infection occurs, try to treat it naturally, avoiding antibiotics, which can spark yeast overgrowth. Instead, Steelsmith recommends using tea tree oil, goldenseal, or probiotic douches or suppositories, available online and at health food stores. Kegel exercises are a famous aid, involving clamping down as if interrupting urine flow, before releasing and repeating. This not only help fends off urinary incontinence and infection, it also strengthens and firms pelvic muscles, rendering enhanced enjoyment for both partners.

Make Time for Intimacy

Research has shown that over time, frequent lovemaking actually causes structural changes in certain areas of the brain as new connections form and sex-related regions grow stronger. Stop, and those areas atrophy, making physical intimacy feel awkward once it’s resurrected. A sexless relationship can also be emotionally devastating for the person, often the male, that wants more contact, says Weiner Davis, author of The Sex-Starved Marriage: Boosting Your Marriage Libido. “For the spouse yearning for touch, it is a huge deal,” she says. “It’s about feeling wanted, attractive and loved.” In her practice, she often sees couples that are mismatched in how they wish to demonstrate and receive love. Often, the woman wants to feel close emotionally before she can feel close physically. For the man, physical intimacy is a conduit for opening up emotionally. When both keep waiting to get what they want, the relationship suffers. She counsels couples to deliberately make time to address both partners’ needs. Schedule a long walk or intimate dinner to talk over feelings; also schedule sex. “Some people say, ‘Oh, but

that’s not spontaneous enough,’” says Weiner Davis. “But even if you put it on the calendar, what you do with that time can still be spontaneous and playful.” While most women assume that they need to be in the mood first, research by University of British Columbia Psychiatrist Rosemary Basson suggests that in some women, desire only comes after physical arousal, especially by a loving partner that takes the time to meet her needs. “I wish I had a dollar for each time someone said to me, ‘I’m not in the mood, but once I get into it, I surprise myself, because I have a really good time,’” says Weiner Davis. She’s not advising women to make love when they really don’t want to, but rather to be open to it even when the circumstances aren’t ideal. “A lot of women feel like the house has to be clean, with the kids asleep and free of distracting noises,” she says. “Sometimes, just do it.”

Is Sex Essential?

Clayton points out that while 42 percent of women experience either low sex drive or satisfaction, fewer than 12 percent are really bothered by it. “Some women experience great grief and loss about this. They say, ‘It used to be a part of my life and now it’s gone.’” For some in this subset that are unable to find relief via lifestyle changes, she would recommend Addyi, said to boost desire by changing brain chemicals. On the other hand, many women don’t need to take any action at all. “If someone has low sex drive and it doesn’t matter to them or their partner, it’s not a problem.” That said, the benefits of attending to an affectionate, healthy sex life can go far beyond the bedroom, improving overall health and strengthening relationships, notes Steelsmith. Sex burns calories, increases circulation, releases calming and painkilling hormones like prolactin and prompts production of the “bonding hormones” vasopressin and oxytocin. “When you are in a loving relationship and you express that love through your body, physiological changes occur that can help you bond more deeply with your partner,” she says. “The more you make love, the more love you make.” Lisa Marshall is a freelance health writer in Boulder, CO. t might sound wild or shocking, but Orgasmic Meditation (OM) isn’t about titillation. Its practitioners believe that the power of female sexuality, harnessed through meditation, can actually change the world. According to OneTaste, an international group devoted to OM, OM is “a consciousness practice (like yoga or Pilates) designed for singles and couples to experience more connection, vitality, pleasure and meaning in every aspect of their lives.” OneTaste holds regular events through the popular website Meetup.com. While there is sexual content to the meetings (which are definitely for adults only), everyone’s clothes stay firmly on. OM is about relaxation, connection, and getting past the stigmas and barriers that stand between women and the true power of their sexuality. Women are welcome to attend alone or with a respectful partner of any gender. Participants can expect to get an entirely fresh sex-ed curriculum as they learn about the benefits of OM, the Five Laws of Orgasm and why orgasm is different from climax. OMers learn how to access a grounded, conscious, orgasmic experience that can help them “develop a larger state of consciousness, have better intimacy and stronger connections.” Thousands of people in New York, London, and around the world have discovered the joy that comes when they let go of shame and embrace their sexual selves. To participate, women can sign up at OneTaste.Us or Meetup.com, and an Orgasm Expert will call them and orient them before the event, answering any questions, so they’ll know what to expect. woman’s natural life cycle presents an ever-changing landscape of potential health issues. Hormones, in particular, can be affected by the milestones of puberty, childbirth and menopause. Menopause-related hormone imbalance can be increasingly problematic due to lowered functioning of an aging thyroid, a gland that plays a large role in regulating hormones. Thyroid imbalances can cause weight issues, anxiety and depression, fatigue, skin and hair changes, indigestion, sleep issues and more. Since thyroid imbalances can also be caused by autoimmune diseases and can have a genetic component, or can even be triggered by viruses, the first step in treating imbalances should always involve a proper medical diagnosis. Once the diagnosis is made, a naturopathic treatment plan can be created. Because no part of the human body operates independently of the rest of the body, a holistic perspective is essential when addressing thyroid issues. A founding naturopathic principle holds that if the body is in proper balance, it can tolerate the fluctuation of hormones. Traditional naturopathy considers the health of all major organ systems in the body, acid/alkaline balance and naturopathic detoxification. Specifically, naturopathy seeks to remove offenders (allergens), replace what nutrients might be missing and repair damage (inflammation). While a naturopathic approach to hormonal imbalance considers many factors, including exercise, stress and emotions, nutrition and sleep play a central role in restoring health. Research shows that certain nutrients can nourish the thyroid gland, such as antioxidants and the herbs

NABuxMont.com

ashwagandha, schisandra and ginseng. Additionally, women experiencing menopause benefit from specific nutrients, such as B vitamins and minerals. Adding to the nutritional challenge, certain foods, especially when refined, often become difficult to digest as we age. Eating more plant-based foods can be beneficial, with the caveat that soy and wheat are not nourishing foods for the thyroid and are common allergens. Engaging in nutritional cleansing can help reduce overload in the liver, the essential organ that manages hormonal fluctuations. The lack of restorative sleep often underlies all other health challenges, especially during menopause. Naturopathic approaches integrate sleep hygiene, restoring sleep cycles and nourishing the nervous system. Commonly used herbs include chamomile, passion flower, valerian and skullcap. Supplements may include melatonin and minerals, which help to calm the body. Since sleep is a naturally occurring human phenomenon, natural sleep cycles can usually be restored, depending on how long the imbalance has occurred. Aging is a natural part of life, but with the proper whole-system approach to changing needs, delicate balances can be not only maintained, but enriched. Lynn W. Feinman, owner of Natural Health Options, in Paoli, is a naturopathic doctor and yoga instructor specializing in health recovery and detoxification programs. When Information Is Medicine Using NeuroModulation Technique in Thyroid Therapy by Lisa Rhodes

A

malfunctioning thyroid can have many underlying causes, including poor nutrition, toxicity, diet, overwhelming stress and medication such as birth control pills. Regardless of the cause, the end result may be an autoimmune process that affects either the thyroid gland itself or the enzymes needed to convert inactive thyroid hormone to the active form. In order to relieve thyroid conditions, not only does the originating cause need to be addressed, but also any autoimmune process that is the end result. In an autoimmune condition, the immune system creates antibodies that mistakenly perceive the body’s own tissues, such as the thyroid gland, or its own enzymes, such as conversion enzymes, as the enemy. It is this misinformation that makes NeuroModulation Technique (NMT) especially effective as a therapy. NMT has been called “informational medicine” because it operates on the principle that the body naturally

heals itself, and that illness and disease result from miscommunication within the other-than-conscious operations of the body. Either the wrong information is being communicated, or the correct information is being sent to the wrong place, or at the wrong time. Using a unique form of dynamic muscle-response testing, the NMT practitioner taps directly into the patient’s

Stop living with

mind-body connection, following carefully developed questions and corrective training statements to determine the appropriate therapeutic path for the patient. NMT is used to 1) desensitize the body to any immune triggers that are contributing to the production of antibodies, 2) initiate breakdown and elimination of these antibodies and 3) assist in the healing and optimal function of tissue damaged as a result of autoimmunity. Anyone suffering from thyroid dysfunction should, of course, implement lifestyle changes, such as a non-inflammatory diet, stress reduction and exercise. They should also consult with a nutrition expert to ensure their individual nutrition needs are addressed. But many people who have one autoimmune condition have multiple autoimmune diagnoses. A therapy modality as versatile and fundamental as NMT can help ensure that miscommunication in the body is recognized and addressed on all levels. Getting Savvy

About Social Media Training and Techniques Cultivate Online Success by Michelle Bense

P

assionate about social media and technology, Michelle Arbore was looking for a new way to work from home when she launched Savvy Social Media in 2010. Six years later, she is busier than ever helping small-business owners create the social media presence they need in order to give the best impression to new and existing customers. Prompted to work from home due to health reasons, as well as Michelle Arbore the desire to start a family, Arbore began searching for the right fit for her. “I was looking into virtual assistant jobs when I got on social media myself, and I fell in love with it,” enthuses Arbore. “The more I talked to my clients about it, the more I knew that there was a need.” Now the mother of an almost-5-year-old, Arbore loves owning her own business so she can be home with her son. Savvy Social Media offers customized social media training for small businesses, virtually or through in-person, one-on-one coaching. “I can coach them on how to manage and use social media themselves,” says Arbore, “or I can do it all for them—find content, look at when their audience is on, interact with their audience, research hashtags and keep track of all the constant changes that seem to happen on a daily basis. This way, they can focus on growing their business and not worry about their social media presence.” Arbore also speaks on different aspects of social media. She has spoken at networking events, women’s organizations and conferences, and numerous chambers of commerce, as well as being interviewed for webinars, telesummits, seminars and podcasts. She has also created and hosted local workshops in the Rochester, New York, area where she lives, as well as online challenges designed to help businesses grow. She hopes to expand her reach even further this year by creating her own webinars and telesummits.

Arbore is certain of one thing: a social media presence is necessary for businesses of all kinds. “It used to be that you had to have a website, but now if you’re not on social media, you’re behind the times,” she explains. “Your current and potential clients are on social media. It’s great for customer service, growing your business, getting your product out there and showing you’re the expert in your field. It’s about the ‘know, like and trust’ and bringing people to your website.” For those that have an aversion to social media, Arbore suggests starting off slow. “You can’t be on every social media platform because then you will get overwhelmed and frustrated and not want to do it,” she cautions. “Start with one platform, and stick with it for six to eight months and see how it goes.” It is also important, she notes, to know what your social media goals are and who your target market is. In order to help with this, Savvy Social Media offers a free social media marketing plan, available at SavvySocialMedia.net/socialmedia-marketing-plan. Arbore says, “It helps business owners figure out their goals, think outside the box about who their target market is, where their audience is, which networks they should focus on and more.” For more information, call 585-506-6291, email MArbore@ SavvySocialMedia.net or visit SavvySocialMedia.net. round 6,000 women reach menopause every day—that’s more than two million per year. For many of them, it’s a rocky time filled with mood swings, poor sleep, hot flashes, night sweats and foggy thinking. The really bad news is that at least a third of women in one survey stated they don’t think they’re aware of all the options out there for treatment, or that they are not happy with the options presented to them. Add to this that in conventional gynecologic training, physicians are taught that treatment for symptoms is hormone replacement therapy (HRT)… and then they’re told that HRT isn’t really all that good for women. What’s a doc to do? The reality is that there are a lot of options out there. HRT is certainly one of them, but jumping into bioidentical hormones right off the bat could mean that the underlying reason for the symptoms and imbalance is never addressed. At some point in the future, when these women decide to stop their hormone therapy, they might start flashing all over again because no one ever helped them fix the cause. Also, hormones can be expensive, so looking for the cheaper alternatives first makes sense. Get some lab work done. Check a full thyroid panel (TSH, free T4, free T3 plus thyroid antibodies and reverse T3) along with cortisol and DHEA. Check fasting glucose and a hemoglobin A1C,

NABuxMont.com

even if the fasting glucose is normal. This information will help establish where to focus attention in treatment. The first place to look, as usual, is food. How we eat as perimenopausal women really does make a huge impact on how we feel. All the steps in hormone production require nutrient cofactors that are found in vegetables (magnesium and B vitamins, in particular). Eating more veggies and fewer grains and sweets (even excess fruit) can make a huge difference for someone having hot flashes. Also, not everyone needs to be gluten-free, but gluten-containing grains do have a negative impact on the liver’s breakdown of hormones; focusing on gluten-free grains will decrease this. Eating more legumes also helps, as they contain flavonoids, fiber and other chemicals that impact hormone metabolism. So, although each woman needs to work out details for herself, a good rule to use is the following: half of what you have eaten by the end of the day should be a vegetable. This is tough, as most of us don’t eat any at breakfast. Of the remaining half of your food each day, make one-third of it animal protein if you eat animals (this includes eggs and dairy, obviously), one-third should be healthy fats (nuts, seeds, avocados, the oils in salad dressings

and what you cook with) and one-third would include grains, fruit and anything else (like chocolate). Following this rule will result in really small portions of these foods. Exercise also has a huge impact on menopausal symptoms—the more the better, though it is possible to actually do it “wrong”. Move but don’t get extreme about it. Focus on strength building and not so much cardio, since most perimenopausal women lose muscle quickly. That might mean just a more vigorous yoga class or pilates and doesn’t need to include lifting weights in the gym. Learning more emotional resilience and better stress management has a huge impact as well. Most of us spend a great deal (all?) of our time in the fight-or-flight mode. Too much on our plate, too much bad news, no downtime… this keeps our adrenal hormones stuck in the “on” position, and when this happens, estrogen and progesterone balance goes out the window. Progesterone gets converted to cortisol to conserve energy for the adrenals, which leads to unbalanced estrogen. Also, the high cortisol is what triggers the temperature-regulating

If replacement hormones are indicated as the best course of action, among those available, bioidentical hormones are safest. portion of the brain to set off hot flashes. This can be overturned by higher estrogen levels (which is why HRT works), but if it’s still going on when a woman stops her HRT, she’ll simply flash all over again. When all of these lifestyle issues are being worked on, but sleep and thinking straight are still difficult, interventions like herbs and hormones should be considered. Many plants combat menopausal symptoms, from black cohosh to Siberian rhubarb to night blooming cereus, but all work best when used with herbal adaptogens and nervines. Adaptogens help support adrenal function and include plants like ashwagandha, holy basil and rhodiola. Nervines calm us down; fresh milky oats is a favorite. Different plants work better for different people, so seeking out a knowledgeable provider is a must. For some women, hormone replacement therapy may ultimately provide the best results. There are conventional hormones, which one gets at a regular pharmacy. Some are bioidentical (chemically just like

s e e

what our bodies make) and some are chemicals that are “new to nature” that have activity similar to estrogen and progesterone, but our bodies have never seen them before. Several major studies agree that among replacement hormones available, bioidentical hormones are safest. The downside to “regular” prescriptions is that they are mostly oral (probably not the best choice) and have limited doses available. Compounded bioidentical hormones, however, are designed to let each woman have the dose that is right for her, and several different forms of delivery are available, including capsules, creams, pellets and bucchal troches. Compounded forms also allow for inclusion of testosterone and adrenal support, which are not available in “commercial” HRT. Menopause is not a disease, but it is a transition that will likely require each of us to reevaluate how we’ve been living. We need to look at the big picture and not jump to an easy fix. Our bodies will thank us. Wendy Warner, MD, ABIHM, is board certified in gynecology and holistic medicine. Her practice, Medicine in Balance, is located in Langhorne. BIOIDENTICAL HORMONES

Getting Past Misconceptions by Monica Gavin

W

hile most people are aware of hormone replacement therapy (HRT), key misconceptions still exist. HRT is most typically associated with women and menopause. And while it’s true that many women seek out help for hot flashes and other menopausal symptoms, bioidentical hormone replacement therapy (BHRT) can offer benefits far beyond this one issue, improving patients’ lives in a variety of ways. It’s important to note the difference between bioidentical and synthetic hormone replacement therapy. Because synthetic hormones do not match the molecular structure of human hormones, they often result in unpleasant side effects, some as severe as cancers and cardiovascular issues. Conversely, bioidentical hormones, derived from natural plant sources, provide an exact match to those produced by the human body, offering relief from symptoms while minimizing the potentially dangerous side effects. As Marla Viturello, of Philadelphia Professional Compounding Pharmacy, states, “The value of customized BHRT is critical in restoring balance. Because these prescriptions are naturally derived and can be compounded in different strengths and dosage forms, patients can benefit from a regimen designed for their distinctive needs.” So, what are the top misconceptions regarding BHRT?

BHRT is for women only. The truth is that men can suffer

the effects of declining hormones just as much as women do. Symptoms of andropause (often referred to as male menopause) include decreased libido and muscle mass, impotence, and mood and sleep disorders.

Sleeplessness is just a fact of modern life. Insufficient sleep can have a

detrimental effect on health and negatively affect all other areas of life. Sound sleep is possible at any age and is often a reflection of proper hormonal balance.

Declining enthusiasm for life is a natural result of growing older.

WHAT’S BUGGING YOU? LET US HELP

THE “GREEN” WAY TO RID YOUR HOME OF ANTS, BEES, MICE, ROACHES SPIDERS, FLEAS AND OTHER PESTS

While life events can certainly present challenges at times, middle age is not a disease of waning vitality. Restoring hormonal balance can elevate and even out mood, resulting in a better overall outlook and renewed flair for life.

Memory and concentration naturally decrease with age. Properly balanced hormones can and often do greatly help to restore cognitive function, resolving what many term “foggy thinking”. After BHRT, patients often report that they are better able to concentrate at work, with sharper thinking skills.

Decreased libido is a normal part of aging. The truth is that libido is a direct

reflection of hormonal balance, in both men and women. Restoring the proper balance of estrogen, progesterone and testosterone to optimal levels will restore the libido, enabling patients to have a healthy, fulfilling sex life at any age. Considering each of these benefits, it’s easy to see that the number one benefit of BHRT is a greatly improved quality of life. Vibrant health and vitality are possible at any age.

n a 2001 MADtv skit, Bob Newhart plays psychologist Dr. Switzer, meeting new patient Katherine (Mo Collins) for the first time. She is there to deal with her phobia of being buried alive in a box. The doctor proclaims that he charges $5 for five minutes, and most sessions don’t take longer than that. Katherine shares her fears, and he offers a solution within three minutes. She takes out her pad and pencil to write down the wise words he is about to speak that will change her life. “There are only two words,” he says, “and most people will remember them.” His advice? “STOP IT!” The audience roars with laughter at the absurdity of treating complex mental health issues with such a simple approach, and the more Dr. Switzer spits out his “advice”, the funnier the skit becomes. Perhaps the humor is elevated as we squirm a little uneasily in our seats, knowing that somewhere in that silliness lies a small grain of truth: to some extent we are responsible for our own happiness. Setting aside the absurdity, what if we imagined Dr. Switzer digging deeper into the idea of taking control of our lives… of living happier, with less stress? A man of few words, he may have offered a bit more advice for another $5. Notice the birds singing; feel the wind; see the flowering azaleas.

Stress Signals Listen to Lessen by Christine Tentilucci

T

he term “mind-body connection” can evoke a multitude of subjective definitions. One interpretation is the relationship between mental stress and physical health. Research illustrates that stress that affects the mind directly relates to the health of the body. Therefore, mind-body awareness—remaining aware of how our mental and emotional state correlates to experiences within the body—can be a valuable tool in managing the stress response. When reacting to stressors, the body releases cortisol, known as the “stress hormone”. If the mind is in a continual state of stress, the cortisol level remains constantly elevated, wreaking havoc on a number of the body’s functions. Chronic stress has been linked to digestive disorders, suppressed immune function, internal inflammation and even cancer.

Women’s health is significantly tied to the body’s delicate balance of hormones, which includes cortisol. This is why decreasing the stress response, and conversely increasing the relaxation response, is a key component of women’s health. These are just a few ways increased stress can affect women’s health:  Periodic Periods. Considering cortisol is part of the hormonal system, it’s no wonder that stress may cause irregular periods.  Bouts of Blemishes. Ever wonder why pimples often pop up during times of stress? Raised cortisol levels can cause excess oil production, contributing to acne breakouts.  Tummy Trouble. Prolonged stress can increase stomach acid, causing indigestion, discomfort and the potential development of IBS or ulcers.

INVISALIGN Mercury Free Zirconium Implants Non-Metal Restorations

BuxMont-Main Line Edition

NABuxMont.com

 Distressed Sleep. Mental stress and the accompanying mind chatter can be a sleep-interrupter. Plus, a common side effect of increased cortisol is a pattern of waking up during the night. Lack of sleep can lead to fogginess, irritability and low energy, causing more stress and continuing the cycle. The body’s functions rest and reset during the sleep cycle, making healthy sleep an important part of lowering the stress response.  Weight Woes. Research has linked heightened levels of cortisol to weight gain and belly fat. In addition, stress may trigger emotional eating and increased cravings. To add insult to injury, cortisol-related weight gain can be difficult to reverse, making weight loss a more challenging task. Seeking advice from a trusted healthcare provider is important for any woman that thinks stress and cortisol may be affecting her health, but mindbody awareness should also remain integral to her day. Take time to stop, breathe deeply and be aware, and then explore ways to turn down the volume on stress. MATTERS OF THE ( HEART 10 Things Women May Not Know About Heart Disease by Arnold B. Meshkov

1

Heart disease is the number one killer of both men and women in the United States.

2

The incidence of heart disease has been increasing in women for the last 30 years.

3

Women may not have the typical symptoms of cardiac chest pain, or angina pectoris, as a symptom of a blocked artery or atherosclerosis.

4

Often, the only symptoms women may experience are shortness of breath and fatigue.

5

When women do experience cardiac chest pain, it is often due to problems with the very small blood vessels of the heart, and not due to atherosclerosis, or hardening of the arteries.

6

Heart disease in women presents on average about 10 years later than in men; with the population living much longer now, women without any history of heart problems are presenting with heart disease for the first time much later in life.

7

Women are treated with invasive procedures such as angioplasty and cardiac surgery less often than men.

8

Women have the same risk factors for heart disease as men, such as family history, cigarette smoking, “metabolic syndrome”, elevated cholesterol and lipids, high mental stress levels, high blood pressure (hypertension), being overweight and diabetes.

9

Women have a significant risk of heart disease after menopause, but treatment with estrogens has been shown to increase that risk even further.

10

Women are much more likely to suffer from “broken heart syndrome”, which presents with the typical symptoms of a heart attack but is not due to hardening of the arteries, and is often associated with major life stress events. Arnold B. Meshkov, MD, is board certified in internal medicine, cardiology and echocardiography. Using Past Lives to Gain Freedom in This One

s a traditional psychotherapist, Elaine Berk was often frustrated by the painfully slow nature of change for many clients, despite their willingness, hard work and dedication to the process. “My clients weren’t alone in this—it was true for me as well,” explains Berk. “Some issues would reach 90 percent resolution, then stall.” Through a series of synchronicities, she discovered the field of Past Life Regression Therapy (PLRT), and with it the answers she’d been seeking. After training extensively with some of those most renowned in the field—including Brian Weiss, M.D., Morris Netherton, Ph.D., Carol Bowman, MS, and Patricia Walsh—she founded Past Life Regression Therapy PA and has been helping clients to finally resolve issues that have been plaguing them not only for years, but potentially for lifetimes.

“In my experience, one reason conventional therapy isn’t always effective is because it assumes the issues originated in this lifetime,” says Berk. “PLRT reveals the root causes from events in other lifetimes and thereby heals more deeply and quickly than traditional therapies.” Even those skeptical of reincarnation can benefit, she explains. “When considering their past life regression experience as a metaphor for current life issues, a client still has a therapeutic response. The process causes a shift that enables them to expand their awareness about their life issues and life purpose, using this new understanding to make changes going forward.” During PLRT, for example, an asthmatic client might experience reduced or eliminated symptoms after uncovering a lifetime in which their home burned. A person with belonging and self-esteem issues might learn about a life where they were ostracized and bullied for being different. Someone with an eating disorder might find themselves in other lifetimes where they were starving or malnourished. “In this therapeutic process, the healing—for this and future lives—comes when one retrieves and works through past lifetime experiences and feelings, and then releases old energetic blocks. This leads to the gradual re-integration of missing parts of themselves and the rediscovery of one’s personal power,” says Berk. “Not only can clients resolve the enduring effects of past life trauma, but they often experience a feeling of freedom, deep peace, serenity, love and light in the PLRT session.” Berk continues, “I have found the knowledge, understanding, experience and universal wisdom afforded by the past life therapy process to be truly profound, incredibly healing and rapidly transformative—both for me and for my clients.” Evolving Soul, LLC, is located at 110 North State Street in Newtown, with a satellite office in Doylestown. upermodel extraordinaire Christie Brinkley looks as amazing in her 60s as she did when she first graced the cover of Sports Illustrated nearly 40 years ago. In a new book, Timeless Beauty, Brinkley reveals her antiaging secrets, many of which involve reliance on healthful foods, a positive attitude, exercise and good skin care. Much of what she’s learned is reflected in her line of Christie Brinkley Authentic Skincare. Here, she shares some highlights of how she keeps her mind and body healthy.

Why did you become a vegetarian at age 14? When I was 13, I picked up a book from the nightstand in my parents’ bedroom called Miami and the Siege of Chicago by Norman Mailer. I happened to open to a page with a highly graphic description of Midwest slaughterhouses. What I read turned my stomach because I loved animals and wanted no part in this inhumane system. I swore at that moment I would never eat another piece of meat and have not done so since. For the past 49 years I have enjoyed the resulting good karma in the form of healthful benefits from avoiding the antibiotics, growth hormones and fats associated with a carnivorous diet.

Was it tougher to maintain your natural standards as your career became filled with travel and tight schedules? After I first became a vegetarian kid living at home, I soon convinced my family to go vegetarian, too. I read a lot of books to learn how to replace meat protein with healthier choices. Through the early years, as I continued to learn about options, I tried many kinds of vegetarian, macrobiotic and vegan approaches.

Once I started modeling in seashore locations, it seemed natural to me to add bits of fresh fish and some dairy; so for the most part I have been a lacto ichthyo variation of vegetarian. I raised my children as vegetarians, and recently my daughter, Sailor, and I took the next step to become mostly vegan. I allow myself a little mozzarella and an occasional salmon dish when my body is craving it, because I think we need to listen to what our body needs. After the environmental disasters of the BP oil spill in the Gulf, made worse by toxic dispersants, and the Fukushima nuclear plant meltdown that pumped radioactive isotopes into the Pacific, I am extra-cautious about the salmon I choose and don’t eat other seafood. I’m lucky that as a model, my career has naturally kept me aware of the amount of sugar I consume, limiting its effects on skin and overall health as well as weight.

How much of anti-aging do you believe is tied to mental and emotional health? Growing old gracefully is all about the positive energy that you use to power through your day and project to others. Happiness is a youthful quality and a smile is always our best accessory; it’s also been proven to release feel-good endorphins. When you take good care of yourself by eating right and exercising, you naturally feel better about yourself. If we’re

ECZEMA, PSORIASIS, ACNE, ROSACEA & ANTI-AGING

feeling down, stressed or depressed, we’re tempted to eliminate exercise, which is the very thing that could lift us up and make us feel better. The more we move, the merrier we are.

Because you also recognize the importance of treating the body well from the outside as well as from the inside, what other practices do you apply? With everything we know about how the sun can damage our skin, it’s crucial to use a moisturizer with a broad ultraviolet spectrum blocker of both UVA and UVB rays to prevent wrinkles and hyperpigmented spots. I created my own skin care line that offers an SPF 30 broad-spectrum moisturizer that also defends against infrared rays [IR], which represent more than half of the sun’s damaging rays that reach Earth. IR emissions also come from manmade objects such as computers and cell phones. Beyond that, I wanted a product that takes advantage of our body’s own circadian rhythms, using special peptides that help the body build collagen and elastin as we sleep and repair. Using a gentle exfoliating scrub is also key, a step many people overlook; I’ve included it in my daily skin care routine for 30 years. Gerry Strauss is a freelance writer in Hamilton, NJ.
