There is a place just hours away where you can find peace and thrive. Where you’ll be surrounded by abundant natural beauty, clean air and space; not condos, crowds or endless traffic. Located in the USA on the Eastern Shore of Virginia, just 3 hours from I-95 and the PA state line and 5 hours from New York. High Knoll at Country Club is centrally located on a narrow peninsula with the Atlantic Ocean on one side and the Chesapeake Bay on the other. It can easily access the many free boat ramps for launching on the ocean side or the bay side making it possible to fish either side within minutes of home! The Gulf Stream runs just offshore giving the area a nearly perfect climate with short, mild winters (snow is rare.) Ranked 2nd for the most sunny days on the East Coast. The land is high ground and well protected from storms and flooding. This property has rich, fertile farming soils and an aquifer with abundant pure water. Nearby are wineries, a food co-op, organic farms and great seafood! An 18 hole golf course and yacht basin is just across the water. Low property taxes. Protective local zoning will help preserve the area’s rural character. Fourteen barrier islands make up the Virginia Coastal Reserve, a virtual paradise of uninhabited beaches and coves just waiting to be explored. The sea side bays between the shoreline and the islands offer an abundance of oysters, clams and fish of every kind! Please come take a look. You might be pleasantly surprised that pristine coastal places like this still exist just hours away.

letterfrompublisher I remember so well being 8 or 9 years old,

standing in the nurse’s office, reading the big E on the eye chart, and listening for the high tones coming through the headphones. And who can forget their first time having a cavity drilled? As adults, though, even those considered health-conscious, we don’t pay nearly as much attention to our visual, oral or auditory health. I know it’s not uncommon for me, with my ever-busier life, to go “too long” between teeth cleanings, eye exams and other important acts of self-care. Frequently, we wait until something goes wrong before we give ourselves the attention we deserve. In this issue, we’ll seek to more fully understand how these aspects of our health are connected to whole-body, whole-being wellness, and can help us be more proactive in our approach. We’ll look at how technological advancement in recent years has transformed both prevention and treatment options for the better. Talking with local dentists, oral surgeons, optometrists and other care providers as we have this month, the message is clear: just because technology is advancing doesn’t mean care needs to become sterile or impersonal. Instead, practitioners are using technology as a tool to aid in patient education and empowerment. There is also an emphasis on integrating the health of the senses with the larger picture of one’s personal wellness. Holistic dentists have expanded their focus to address root causes of dental issues; they are counseling patients on good nutrition, which can help prevent tooth decay, as well as stress management, which can play into issues like teeth-grinding and TMJ. Today’s optometrists are talking with patients about how much time they spend using phones and other screens, so they prescribe lens designs, options and treatments that can help prevent eye strain and computer vision syndrome. We know that this integrated, holistic approach to care has a positive impact on long-term, physical, emotional and spiritual health. We’re lucky to have excellent practices right here, in BuxMont, where residents can find the combination of advanced technology and individualized lifestyle counseling to help support positive behavioral change and ensure visits to the doctor are less frequent and less invasive. By treating the whole person from the inside out, we become ever so much more than the sum of our parts. We thank you for reading and for being a part of this community this and every month. Together, we are “Making the Awakening” in Bucks and Montgomery counties.

G

he International School of Shiatsu will host shiatsu and shin tai trainings as well as workshops and classes in body, energy and breathwork, tai chi, yoga, meditation and qigong throughout April and May. Offerings include Shiatsu Clinic, on April 1, Arcturian Healing Light Part Three with Gene Ang, from April 2 to 5, and Governing Vessel and the Spine, from April 21 to 23 and 28 to 30. Aspiring massage students or those interested in finding out more can attend a Shiatsu Intro Weekend from May 6 to 7. The Shiatsu Level One training will begin May 13, and Shiatsu Level Two starts May 8. For those seeking a career in shiatsu and body therapies, full-time and part-time scheduling options are available. The International School of Shiatsu recently relocated to a larger, new space in Plumsteadville, just north of Doylestown, to provide an even wider array of classes, programs and services to the community. The school’s mission is to train, nurture and support students to become excellent practitioners of shiatsu and shin tai and to provide the experience of shiatsu and advanced bodywork to the general public. All programming is designed to help “move the chi” and allow students and clients to become more fully engaged in life.

reenshire Arts Consortium, in Quakertown, is hosting bi-monthly classes, facilitated by Reverend Arlene Curley, Ph.D., that offer guidance for realizing a more inspired life. Finding Meaning in Challenging Times meets from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., March 14 and 28, while Embracing Life with Conscious Intention: Living the Magdalene Mysteries meets from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., March 21 and April 4. The first class addresses the challenges we face during important turning points in life, such as retirement, divorce, illness, relocation, death of a spouse, loneliness and aging. Through discussion and practice, Curley supports individuals in stepping beyond a limiting self-identity and bringing forth opportunities that redirect one’s life into a more meaningful presence. The resource book used in this course is Curley’s Completing the Seven, a guide to realizing full potential. The second class explores the mysteries of Western spirituality and how consciously living one’s humanity can lead to a connection with the divine self. Included in this course is the metaphysics of spirituality, journey of the soul, practices for connecting to inner wisdom and divine consciousness, and balancing the feminine and masculine. The resource for this course is Curley’s recently published book, The Eighth Gate, which focuses on the Magdalene Mysteries. Both classes contain progressive workshop content, while each offers meaning unto itself. At-home studies are available via e-mail for those that cannot attend the threemonth series in person.

Local Dementia Conference Offers Tips and Tools for Caregivers

Providing Compassionate Legal Services for You and Your Family

M

ore than 450 people will gather at the Valley Forge Casino Resort, in King of Prussia, for the Alzheimer’s Association Delaware Valley Chapter Annual Dementia Conference, entitled Empowering Caregivers & Communities, on April 24. Attendees will hear from several dementia care experts, including keynote speaker, author/educator/gerontologist, Tam Cummings, Ph.D. “Family and professional caregivers will learn innovative tips and tools from specialized workshop presentations and each other,” says Kristina Prendergast, the chapter’s manager of conference and program outreach. The Delaware Valley Chapter offers a free, 24/7 helpline, support groups, consumer education and other caregiver and early-stage programs and services. Alzheimer’s Association studies have shown a majority of caregivers report higher emotional and physical stress due to caring for someone with dementia. More than one-third experienced symptoms of depression. The association’s 2016 Alzheimer’s Disease Facts and Figures report found one-fifth of care contributors in the United States also sacrificed their own medical care by cutting back on doctor visits, putting their physical health at risk. In Pennsylvania, approximately 400,000 residents have Alzheimer’s or a related disorder. In 2015, as many as 673,000 family members and friends provided 766 million hours of unpaid care for them—worth more than $9 billion. “Too often, struggling caregivers suffer in silence,” says Prendergast. “That’s why we encourage anyone who’s caring for someone living with dementia to attend the conference. It’s a great networking opportunity.” For conference registration and information, call 800-272-3900 or visit alz. org/delval. See ad, page 31.

et ready for longer days and new life at the Quakertown Center for Spiritual Living’s annual Welcome Spring Spiritual Faire. Now in its 14th year, the event is two days of seminars, workshops and making connections in the spiritual community. The Faire runs from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., April 1, and from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., April 2, at the Milford Township Fire Company, in Milford Square. Admission is $5 for both days, and there will be food available for purchase. Organizer Ellen Zuby says that every year there is something new and different to look forward to. “We have vendors who come with spiritual jewelry, essential oils, minerals and moonbeams. There are reflexology and reiki practitioners and tarot card readers. It’s partly a spiritual expo, partly a holistic expo, with interactive workshops and seminars that bring the community together,” says Zuby. The Center for Spiritual Living’s mission is to transform lives through the practice and teaching of Science of Mind principles. “We pray for a world that works for everybody,” Zuby explains. “We don’t tell people what to think; we teach them how to think, including keeping thoughts positive and productive. The teachings fit in with any religion. We’re all works in progress. If you change your thinking, you can change your life. The Spiritual Faire is a great opportunity to explore ways to do that in a holistic and nurturing community.” Location: 2185 Milford Square Pk., Milford Square. R

esearchers from the Harvard School of Public Health, in Boston, used data from previous studies to discern the association between dairy and animal fats and cardiovascular disease (CVD) in American adults. The study reviewed dairy fat and other fat consumption data using validated food-frequency questionnaires from more than 43,000 men and 175,000 women during three different studies, each spanning at least 20 consecutive years. Of the subjects studied, 14,815 developed some form of CVD, close to 7 percent of the total. The researchers found that replacing dairy foods with foods containing polyunsaturated fats—primarily found in vegetables, nuts and fish—in just 5 percent of a subject’s diet reduced the risk of CVD by an average of 24 percent. But replacing the same percentage of dairy fats with other animal fats increased the incidence of CVD by 6 percent.

Kids Going Online at Bedtime Sleep Poorly

A

new study from King’s College London has found that children’s use of electronic devices close to bedtime can reduce their chances of a good night’s sleep. Researchers examined 20 existing studies encompassing 125,000 children between the ages of 6 and 19. They found that youngsters using a device within 90 minutes of falling asleep had an increased likelihood of poor and inadequate sleep quality and excessive daytime sleepiness. Study author Ben Carter, Ph.D., says, “Sleep is an often undervalued, but important part of children’s development, with a regular lack of sleep causing a variety of health problems.” These can include obesity, sedentary lifestyle, reduced immune function and poor diet. Poor food choices and excessive eating can start young, as illustrated in a study from Colorado University, in Boulder, which found a link between sleep deprivation and poor diet choices in preschool children. The Colorado study followed five girls and five boys, ages 3 and 4, that were regular afternoon nappers. They were deprived of their naps for one day, during which their food and beverage consumption was monitored and compared with their choices on a day when their sleep routine remained intact. During the sleep-deprived day, the children ate 20 percent more calories than usual and their diet consisted of 25 percent more sugar and 26 percent more carbohydrates.

Oregano Oil Proves a Safe Antibiotic for Poultry In many large commercial chicken farms, the animals are fed antibiotics to keep them healthy and fight off infections. But due to consumer demand, McDonald’s has eliminated antibiotics used in human medicine from its entire restaurant chicken supply. Meanwhile, a farm in Pennsylvania owned by Scott Sechler is among the first to rely solely on a mix of oregano oil and cinnamon in the treatment and care of its chickens. In addition to being completely natural, oregano oil supplies the chickens with health advantages, producing a much higher quality of natural chicken in a far more humane method than that attained using antibiotics. Like antibiotics, the oil assists the chickens in battling any infections, reducing the number of birds lost to disease. Bob Ruth, president of another Pennsylvania farming business, has been testing oregano on his pigs for six months to see if it can outperform prescription antibiotics. Related problems arise when animals live in dirty conditions, making them more susceptible to infections and viruses, which can also be triggered by insufficient cleansing of slaughterhouses that must be hosed down and completely sanitized after each act of butchery. He thinks that drugs should not be a requirement if the farmers keep things tidy.

A coalition of environmental groups, grocers and others are collaborating, and Mark Murray, of Californians Against Waste, welcomes elimination of the 25 million plastic bags that pollute California every day, threatening wildlife. In 2007, San Francisco first banned plastic shopping bags, setting off a movement that led nearly half the state, including its biggest cities, to do the same. Although the legislature passed a statewide ban on plastic bags two years ago, paper bags are still for sale at grocery stores and other outlets for a nominal fee.

Fish Story

African Aquaculture a Success Fish farming has become a way for many Africans to beat poverty and hunger. Hillary Thompson, who lives in Milton Park, a low-density area in the Zimbabwean capital of Harare, says, “For more than a decade, fish farming has become a hobby that has earned me a fortune.” He has been able to acquire properties that he rents out as one of many residents that have profited through fish farming. In many African communities, swimming pools and backyards have been converted into smallscale fish farming areas. Faced with nutritional deficits, some Africans have taken up the practice to improve their diets. In Zimbabwe, an estimated 22,000 people are involved in fish farming, according to the ministry of agriculture. Behind the success of many of them stands the Aquaculture Zimbabwe Trust, established in 2008 to mobilize resources for the sustainable development of environmentally friendly fisheries nationally. Across Africa, fishing provides direct incomes for about 10 million people and provides food for 200 million more.

Oil Wastewater Irrigating California Fields In the nation’s produce basket, some California water districts are knowingly selling oilfield wastewater to farmers, putting a huge portion of our fruits and vegetables at risk of contamination. Watchdog group Water Defense uncovered one district buying oilfield wastewater to include in the water it sells to farmers to irrigate crops in California’s Central Valley. This year, Food & Water Watch uncovered another district buying this potentially toxic wastewater and selling it to farmers. A threat to California’s agriculture is a threat to the entire country’s food supply. Some staples of which California is the primary U.S. producer include 99 percent of olives, 99 percent of almonds, 98 percent of garlic, 96 percent of broccoli, 95 percent of celery, 91 percent of strawberries, 91 percent of lemons and 83 percent of fresh carrots. The government is allowing oil companies to sell their wastewater for use on crops. Citizens must call on their elected representatives to fix this broken system and protect our food supply. Kripalu Comes to Montco Anahata’s Hatha Yoga Teacher Training

by Rebecca Antsis

W

ithin a sea of yoga studios and wellness centers, each proffering their own classes and companion philosophies, how does one discern which class is right for them? This question is even more pertinent for those seeking to take the leap and train as a yoga teacher. In a world where more is more, Anahata Yoga and Wellness Center refreshingly offers a different kind of narrative for its students. One of only 16 Kripalu-affiliated schools nationwide, Anahata Yoga emphasizes the central tenets of the Kripalu style of hathabased yoga—a yoga philosophy guided by the principles of self-awareness, connection to the compassionate heart and honoring one’s own personal edge. The physical studio itself is located inside a lovingly restored, historic property in Harleysville. Studio owner Kathleen Tooley proudly offers a small studio that serves to provide a sacred space dedicated to wellness, personal integration and tuning into one’s heart

energy. Tooley assures there is no sweaty, gasping-for-air stretching routine in these yoga classes. Currently accepting applicants for its 2017 Spring/Fall 200-hour Anahata Yoga Teacher Training (AYTT) Program, the studio’s training program similarly follows a gentler path based on selfinquiry characteristic of Kripalu Yoga. This Yoga Alliance-certified, nine-month training program is spaced out in monthly weekend training intensives, which allows for the time needed by each student to amply reflect on and fully process the training they are receiving. Because each AYTT incoming class is capped at a ratio of eight students per five contributing instructors, the training and personal attention is paramount. Another hallmark of the training process at Anahata is to help each yogi or yogini to delineate their personal relationship to yoga, and to let that relationship inform their unique, instructive “voice”. AYTT trainees graduate confident they have received the information

needed to instruct a distinct and knowledgeable hatha yoga class with assuredness, sensitivity and depth. Requisite Yoga Alliance modules of anatomy and asanas are covered fully as are additional unique and advanced offerings that include (but are not limited to): Ayurveda, Mudras, Hypermobility, Yin Yoga, Restorative Yoga, TraumaSensitive Yoga, the Chakra system and “finding your voice as a teacher”. For those seeking a departure from run-of-the-mill trainings, this fully integrative program will serve the yogi or yogini well. Those interested less in teaching and more in finding an entry point to developing a disciplined, heartcentered yoga practice will also find their home in AYTT. Trainings will be held from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Saturday, and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Sunday, every first weekend of the month, from April through December 2017. Applicants for the 200-hour YTT are required to have at least one year prior yoga experience with a commitment to a personal yoga practice, a compassionate heart and a genuine desire to take this transformational journey. Pricing ranges between $2,500 and $2,900, and a variety of payment options are available. Location: 703 Harleysville Pk., Harleysville. ccording to a 2012 New York Times story, “Preschoolers in Surgery for a Mouthful of Cavities,” more dentists nationwide are recommending that children be administered general anesthesia at hospitals due to the severity of decay. Such extensive dental work on children is largely preventable. Wise parents encourage their children to develop healthy habits such as brushing teeth at least twice a day; eating fewer sugary snacks and brushing afterwards; limiting fruit juice intake to four ounces a day; and sucking on bacteria-killing xylitol lollipops. Such a routine combined with an initial dentist visit by their first birthday can reduce dental costs, including hospital treatment for extreme decay that can cost thousands of dollars. Other ways to reduce the too-common incidence of six to 10 childhood cavities include breastfeeding only until baby teeth erupt; avoiding transmission of an anaerobic oral bacteria carried in saliva that’s the leading cause of tooth NABuxMont.com

decay; early interceptive treatment to avoid crowding of teeth; and consulting a nutritionist.

Breastfeeding

Andie Pearson, a doctor of dental medicine and owner of Gaimed Dental Spa, in Wilmette, Illinois, tells mothers that in the descent through the birth canal, their baby ingests the bacteria necessary to digest breast milk. As teeth later emerge, their gut bacteria also become able to digest solid food. “By the time a child has all 20 baby teeth, between 18 and 30 months, they no longer have the microbial ecology for digesting breast milk and should be weaned. Researchers from the University of CaliforniaBerkeley have found that the more frequently a mother breastfed her child beyond the second birthday during the day, the greater the child’s risk of severe early tooth decay,” says Pearson. Development of facial muscles and bone structure is dependent on chewing and gnawing. “Teething rings facilitate chewing that builds stronger

teeth and creates better alignment,” she explains. If childhood tooth growth is delayed, Pearson often suggests a chiropractic adjustment if all other developmental areas are normal. “It can help the body relax so that teeth erupt naturally,” she advises.

Mouth-to-Mouth Susan Maples, a doctor of dental surgery and owner of Total Health Dentistry, in Holt, Michigan, notes that Streptococcus mutans is the leading reason children are hospitalized today. “Cavities are formed when the rate of decay of the teeth caused by the lactic acid produced by the bacteria exceeds the rate of repair initiated by the phosphate and calcium ions in saliva,” she explains. The unwanted bacteria is transmitted through saliva, which is why adults should avoid licking spoons or tasting foods before offering them to children between the ages of 1 and 3. “This type of bacteria thrives on sugar, so children shouldn’t have lots of sugary drinks and sweet treats,” says Maples. Mouth kissing presents a similar risk.

Advanced Dentistry Meets Zen-Like Spa

Dr. Skovron’s Niche Dental Retreat by Rebecca Antsis

I

magine if a state-of-the-art dentistry practice had a lovechild with a holistic spa: the light aroma of peppermint and cloves would waft pleasantly though the air as the soft whir of a nearby air purifier commingled with the ongoing susurrus produced by gentle cascades of a zen waterfall. KIND bars would sit next to a Keurig, perched atop a hotel-style mini-fridge housing exotic, bottled iced teas. Nestled in the corner would be the deep, inviting cushion of a leather massage chair. Staff members would greet co-workers and patients with a radiant conviviality. Fortunately, innovative imagination can become reality, as evidenced by Heritage Dental, in Montgomeryville. Heritage Dental was conceived from Dr. Beth Skovron’s inquisitive, scientific mind and compassionate heart, compelled by the desire to create a dental office unlike any other she had frequented. “My concept was to create a completely different environment— one that didn’t feel at all like a dentist’s office,” says Skovron. 20

Bucks & Montgomery County Edition

Increasingly, Skovron began to incorporate spa-like elements into her practice, elements such as an aromatherapy diffuser, massage chairs throughout the office, warm towels and lotions, nutrient-rich snacks and herbal teas. While patients are in the dentist chair, they can put on headphones and select from a choice of soothing imagery and music. Heritage Dental even makes its own organic lip balm. Skovron’s drive to improve patients’ experiences in her office merged

NABuxMont.com

with her attentiveness to patients’ other interests and concerns, leading her to research and embrace holistic dentistry. According to NaturalDentistry.us, “Truly holistic dentists are dentists who perform dentistry that is good for the body as well as the teeth and gums.” Holistic dentistry focuses not only on treating a problem that has cropped up in a patient’s oral care, but also on preventive measures. Holistic dentists consider root causes of a dental issue from a whole-body perspective, and they work to ensure the whole body and well-being of the patient are not adversely affected by what transpires in the dentist’s chair. As a holistic dentist, Skovron states that, “in our office, we use practices and procedures that take care of dental needs in the safest, most natural way possible.” Heritage Dental honors a commitment to the use of metal-free dentistry. It also specializes in the holistic practice of safe mercury removal, which protects the client and staff from mercury vapor during extraction. Charcoal rinses and full-body barriers are employed to minimize and shield patients and practitioners from the deleterious effects of mercury exposure and the potential toxicity associated with mercury poisoning. Because mercury is also considered toxic to the environment, Heritage Dental uses environmental filters and follows all protocol and procedures to ensure that mercury does not make its way into the sewer system. Building a strong and cohesive team has been critical to Heritage Dental’s success. Skovron regularly plans group outings for her dental staff; past trips have included skydiving and a painting

class. Skovron also subsidizes continued education and training for employees so they remain up-to-date and their skills diversify. This commitment shows itself in the palpably friendly, relaxed and caring atmosphere inside the office. Skovron’s second-in-command, office manager and patient liaison Rosie Hetrick, is perhaps Heritage Dental’s most effusive fan: “I love Dr. Beth and I love what I do,” enthuses Hetrick. “She’s amazing. As a team we are so unique in that we really go above and beyond as far as dental treatment and dental care with our state-of-the-art equipment, and we’re constantly striving for exceptional service by keeping up with continuing education and training. Then we also have this holistic zen vibe. I wouldn’t trade it for the world. Our team and patients are like family.” With a staff that takes a wholebody/whole-mind approach and has advanced technologies at their fingertips, with the knowledge to properly execute targeted procedures, it is no wonder Heritage Dental is growing. To meet the needs of its booming practice, Heritage Dental will celebrate a grand opening in April as it expands into a larger space and offers new amenities. The office will gain an additional onethird of square footage and will nearly double in space. Also in the works is a Zen Room replete with more massage chairs, an expanded aromatherapy program and additional dental treatment rooms to accommodate new specialists. Since the beginning, Dr. Skovron has challenged the perception that a visit to the dentist has to be cold and clinical to deliver excellent care. As her practice’s success and growth attests, more patients are opening their hearts, minds and mouths to the Heritage Dental experience. Location: 595 Bethlehem Pk., Ste. 302, Montgomeryville. For more information, call 215-822-3860 or visit HeritageDentalDDS.com or Facebook.com/ DrBethSkovron. See ad, back cover. Heritage Dental Meet the Team

Rosie Hetrick, Office Manager

Philadelphia native, Quakertown-raised and current denizen of Harleysville, Rosie is the “go-to girl” overseeing all office operations at Heritage Dental. Nothing occurs without Rosie knowing about it first. As patient liaison, Rosie is the patient’s primary point of contact. With clarity, she lays out the feasibility of every client’s individualized treatment plan and works hard to ensure each patient’s dental needs are met. As a 25-year veteran of the industry, her buoyant positivity seems unflagging, and her care for the well-being of patients that visit Heritage Dental is palpable. She emphatically states: “I love what I do.” Rosie is X-rayand CPR-certified as well as a member of the American Association of Dental Office Managers. In her spare time, when she is not visiting with her two granddaughters, Rosie enjoys supporting her husband George in his side business as a DJ.

Lucy Tho, Front Desk Administrator

Events sponsored by Heritage Dental more than likely had their details ironed out by Lucy Tho. In most cases, Lucy is also the first point of contact for anyone entering the office. Born and raised in Landsdale, Lucy has been on the Heritage Dental team for over two years. In addition to event coordination, Lucy organizes staff outings, such as their latest teambuilding adventure, indoor skydiving. On the administrative side, Lucy is Heritage Dental’s social media liaison and official “poster”. Lucy describes herself as “very open, forward and friendly” and abides by and upholds the dictum to “treat others the way you want to be treated.” Lucy adds: “Here, at Heritage Dental, we treat everyone like family.” When not with her extended family of clients and coworkers, Lucy’s time is occupied by her toddler Julien and by making plans to welcome her second child into this world in June.

Kristin Silcox, Dental Hygienist

Doylestown resident Kristin Silcox has only a few pictures of her mom—because of her mother’s intense displeasure with her own smile, she rarely agreed to pose for photos. Consequently, Kristin has made it something of her life’s mission to ensure people love their smiles, graduating from the University of Pittsburgh’s School of Dental Medicine after receiving her bachelor of science degree with a concentration in research. Kristin takes the initiative to co-create with her colleagues a laid-back atmosphere at Heritage Dental. She refers to Heritage as her “dental home”, where she hopes patients feel safe enough to put their dental anxieties to rest. When she’s not treating patients full-time at Heritage Dental, Kristin can be found playing with her two tabby cats, Lily and Tom, cooking with fresh pasta, attending festivals or going on long nature hikes with her fiancé. natural awakenings

Ashley Ziegenfus, Dental Hygienist

Currently a Conshohocken resident, but originally hailing from the woods of the Poconos, Ashley is the self-described “quirky one” of Heritage Dental. After three years of employment, Ashley is still the newest addition to the team. At 25, Ashley is also the youngest employee, thus nicknamed the “baby” of the office. This suits her just fine, and she admits to relying on an arsenal of silly jokes to put patients at ease. Motivated all her life by strong empathic proclivities, Ashley has always known that her purpose is to help others care for their health. Her studies in kinesiology revealed how the head and mouth impact overall well-being, which put her interest in dentistry into focus. In addition to being a Pilates-Barre instructor, Ashley’s interests include plants and sustainable energy.

Thea Davey, Expanded Functions Dental Assistant

Heritage Dental’s resident aromatherapy expert Thea Davey describes herself as “loud, fun and really loving.” Underneath the boisterous exterior is a heart that is immensely caring toward her patients. During anesthesia, Thea will provide hot towels for patients, keep the diffuser well stocked with essential oils and even hold patients’ hands if they are fearful of a procedure. Outside of Heritage Dental, Thea is a Boy Scout Scoutmaster. She spends most of her free time in the wilderness fishing, hiking, canoeing and kayaking with her scouts, a troop that includes her son. She is an avid fan of country and Christian rock music and resides with her husband in Lansdale.

Ian Rapp, Expanded Functions Dental Assistant

Hailing from the Oreland/Fort Washington area, Ian is a self-described calming influence in the office environment for not only his coworkers, but for patients as well. On what he loves best about Heritage Dental: “The whole experience we provide. I really love how we can overcome the anxiety that patients walk in with.” Outside of the office, Ian can be found giving swimming lessons at the Y, strumming his guitar or nose deep in a history or science fiction book while listening to Red Hot Chili Peppers.

Dr. Beth Skovron, Doctor of Dental Science, Owner and Founder

Dr. Beth Skovron’s voice is warm and soft-spoken. It sounds more akin to that of meditation instructor than to the cool stoicism we expect from most doctors. But the tranquility of her voice shouldn’t be misleading: she is deeply passionate about dentistry. Along with a compassionate heart is an ever-inquisitive, scientific mind. As a result, Dr. Beth is able to bring a comprehensive and holistic view to her patients’ needs, informed by expertise amassed over 19 years of clinical practice and 2,500 hours of ongoing continuing education courses and trainings. Dr. Beth is a 1992 graduate of State University of New York at Stony Brook School of Dental Medicine. She received further professional training from the Pankey Institute and the Scottsdale Institute for Advanced Dentistry. She is an active member of the American Dental Association, Pennsylvania Dental Association, Academy of General Dentistry, American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry and local chapters of the Implant Study Club. Dr. Hyo Lim Makes Oral Health Whole Health by Carrie Jackson

O

ral health as central to one’s overall health is the philosophy at Dental Wellness Centre, in King of Prussia. Founded by Dr. Hyo “Tony” Lim, who has served the holistic community since 2000, the practice offers safe and effective, holistic dental options. “I encourage patients to make healthy choices in their daily life which, holistically, will benefit their dental health,” explains Lim, whose whole-health mentality extends beyond teeth and gums. Dentistry is a second career for Lim, who started out working with computers. “I’ve always been fascinated by science, but I realized I liked working with people, too. Early on in my training, I learned about preventative and holistic dentistry, and that really resonated with me,” he says. Lim opened Dental Wellness Centre with the goal of providing the highest quality holistic dental care and stays on top of new techniques and findings through research and informative courses. One special treatment offered by Dental Wellness Centre is mercuryfree fillings. “Mercury in your teeth can be harmful on a larger scale and have negative systemic effects on the whole body,” explains Lim. “The fillings gained popularity because they are cheap and easy to use, but there are strict guidelines on the packaging for even disposing leftovers properly so it doesn’t damage soil and water. Lim understands that patient education is key to preventing many potentially harmful conditions. “We believe our patients deserve to have the information needed to make wise decisions about their oral health. My staff and I sit down with each patient and discuss their options, the pros and cons of each treatment, and any long-term implications. Root canals are an option for some people, but others might do better with a different procedure,” says Lim. At Dental Wellness Centre, emphasis is placed on the understanding that the mouth and the body are part of the same system, and that one affects the other. “Oral health is a combination of genetics and lifestyle,” adds Lim. “Since we can’t control our genetics, I encourage patients to make healthy choices in their daily life, such as cutting back on sugar and acidic foods, getting regular cleanings and knowing their risk factors for periodontal disease.” Other recommendations include flossing daily, avoiding sugary snacks and, for some people, even using an oral probiotic that helps neutralize the bad bacteria. “Holistically, we know about connections like an increased risk of heart disease if your gums are inflamed,” says Lim. “We help promote overall health and wellness, not just oral health.” Location: 216 Mall Blvd., Ste. 11, King of Prussia. Dr. Shapiro’s Empowering Dentistry by Gisele Rinaldi Siebold

r. Jerry Shapiro believes that patients deserve more than they get when it comes to their dental work. “Too many people go to the dentist and have their dentistry ‘done’, but their mouths are not healthy, even though they have paid a great deal of their own money,” notes Shapiro. An advocate of a holistic approach and patient education, Shapiro prides himself on producing patients that not only have beautiful-looking teeth, but also possess sustained oral comfort and health. Shapiro’s practice has been an educational facility for hundreds of patients over his 45 years in dentistry, offering a careful, thoughtful and informative approach. His belief is that the body will heal on its own when obstacles are removed. Shapiro’s services range from general cosmetic dentistry to single tooth implants and full mouth rehabilitations, plus temporomandibular joint (TMJ) diagnosis and treatment, an area of expertise and personal experience.

comfortable bite and smile, allowing the optimum functioning of the muscles, bones, soft tissues and nerves. Lasting, beautiful smiles and comfort are the outcome. “With today’s innovations of live, intraoral close-up cameras and high definition, microscopic TV monitoring of a patient’s plaque germs, patients can get their best results and real healthy mouths that last, stay stable and require very little maintenance and dollar output,” says Shapiro. “Self-empowered dental patients result. After all, ‘doctor’ means ‘teacher’, and that’s what we are supposed to do!” Having once suffered from extreme dental and TMJ problems requiring dental surgery, Shapiro meets each patient with a calm and empathetic approach. Because he’s faced the same oral distress as many of his patients, Shapiro’s goal of any treatment is always the same: establish a well-functioning,

Other holistic comfort services include massage, acupuncture, aromatherapy and reflexology. They also cater to patients that experience fear or anxiety at the thought of visiting the dentist, suffer from a quick gag reflex or are embarrassed by the appearance of their teeth and mouth. A special area of expertise for DiGiallorenzo is the revolutionary technique known as immediate total tooth replacement, which allows for the placement of dental implants and replacement teeth in one visit, a procedure that normally takes months. Using a patient’s own natural stem cells and plasma rich in growth factors, the implant procedure is performed in a way that encourages faster and more comfortable healing. Online testimonials about the LANAP and Implant Center of Pennsylvania attest to life-changing dental experiences. What’s more, the doctors

In Good Hands with Dr. Katie Samsel

What are some tips for everyday chiropractic health?

Exploring the Tangible Benefits of Chiropractic Care by Julie Vitto

Y

ardley native and competitive rower Dr. Katie Samsel is a licensed chiropractic physician and the owner of Samsel Integrative Health, in Langhorne. Throughout her years of training, certification and experience, she has committed to helping patients achieve pain relief by using the most advanced and effective chiropractic techniques available. While conventional medicine focuses on treating illness as it occurs, the approach at Samsel Integrative Health is to emphasize the importance of prevention and maintenance, which ultimately serves to reduce the risk of pain and illness. By developing a customized care plan, Samsel provides firsttime and routine visitors a blueprint for maintaining overall health and wellness.

What are some common misconceptions people have about chiropractic treatments, and how do you address these for first-time clients?

One of the most common misconceptions is that the adjustment hurts or that the only way to get adjusted is manually. I tend to be conservative with my initial treatments, especially with someone that has never been to a chiropractor. If someone is nervous about being adjusted, we may start with instrument adjusting or with a gentle, manual adjustment. Instrument

adjusting utilizes a handheld tool instead of just hands to do the adjustment and is generally less forceful, without any popping sounds.

What are the benefits of seeing a chiropractor, and how often should a client receive treatment?

Because the nervous system controls every part of the body, chiropractic treatment can help almost any issue. I’ve seen amazing results with asthma, constipation, carpal tunnel syndrome, arthritis, migraines, sinus problems and colds. Generally, the average person will get adjusted anywhere from once a week to once a month.

How do people know if a chiropractor is right for them?

The first thing to do is to get evaluated. Most chiropractors can do a preliminary screening that involves posture and spinal palpation. Many people don’t realize that the beginning phases of disease, including arthritis, don’t involve pain, but can show in a spinal exam and can even be seen on X-ray.

What are the most effective techniques for correcting physical imbalances?

Maintaining good posture is a good start. Habits like sitting on feet or sleeping with one knee bent and one straight can perpetuate spinal imbalances. I recommend some type of daily exercise. Walking is a low impact activity with some cardio benefit. Core strengthening exercises help with posture and lower back support. I’m partial to yoga because it includes a good mix of strength and stretching, as well as a component that helps balance the mind.

What are some things people might not know about your work? At Samsel Integrative Health, I use a comprehensive approach to each person I see. I look at the physical, chemical and emotional aspects of the problem. In regards to chiropractic health, it’s important to remember this is rarely an overnight fix. Just like working out or wearing braces on your teeth, it takes time to make changes in the body. Ultimately, I want patients to be comfortable and confident with the treatment they are receiving.

The Mercury Amalgam Debate Pushes On

T

by Rebecca Antsis and Karen G. Meshkov

here is no topic in modern dentistry as controversial as the use of silver mercury amalgam dental fillings. Since the 1840s, the potential hazards of this common dental device have been a source of contention. Despite scientific evidence supporting the health and environmental hazards of mercury fillings, the American Dental Association (ADA) continues to endorse its safety, and the Food & Drug Administration (FDA) continues to side with the industry supporting its use. While the debate continues, New York City’s Times Square is currently the site of a jumbotron projecting: “MERCURY DENTAL FILLINGS RELEASE TOXIC MERCURY.” The billboard is part of a massive effort to educate the public about the toxic properties of silver amalgam dental fillings. Highlighted is the “Safe Mercury Amalgam Removal Technique” (SMART) developed by its sponsor, the International Academy of Oral Medicine and Toxicology (IAOMT), a mercury-free dental organization that certifies dentists in an amalgam removal protocol to reduce the potential negative health outcomes of mercury exposure to patients, dental professionals, students, staff and others. Today’s dental amalgam fillings are comprised of mercury, silver, cop28

Mercury may have no threshold below which some adverse effects do not occur. ~World Health Organization 2005 Policy Paper per, tin and sometimes zinc. At one time ADA professed that mercury was bound within the amalgam and was not released once properly mixed and implanted into the tooth. However, after years of debate, the ADA now admits “small amounts of mercury are released from these fillings,” and the FDA concurs that dental amalgam “releases low levels of mercury in the form of a vapor that can be inhaled and absorbed by the lungs” and that “high levels of mercury vapor exposure are associated with adverse effects in the brain and the kidneys.” Despite ADA and FDA’s long overdue acknowledgement that mercury, a known neurotoxin, is released from these fillings, traditional dentists rarely advise patients of the potential exposure to mercury while sitting in the dental chair. One local dentist claims mercury is still “inert” once mixed in an amalgam. NABuxMont.com

So when does mercury veer from safe to toxic? A 2005 World Health Organization policy paper stated “mercury may have no threshold below which some adverse effects do not occur.” Although no official conclusion has been reached among U.S. public health organizations, a landmark provisional agreement was approved in January 2017 by the three governing institutions of the European Union (E.U.) to ban amalgam dental fillings for children as well as pregnant and nursing women. The legislation takes effect July 1, 2018, and will affect 500 million people. It still must be approved by E.U. governing bodies but is overwhelmingly supported by citizens and lawmakers. As efforts progress to ban the use of mercury amalgams worldwide, the U.S. remains unrestricted with the exception of FDA’s caution for use in pregnant women and children under 6, despite their acknowledgment that “some individuals [may] have an allergy or sensitivity to mercury.” This stance of sober reluctance also seems to be the prevailing position of most traditional dentists, although, up to half of American dentists no longer use mercury amalgam fillings. Their use fell steadily from an estimated 157 million mercury fillings placed in the U.S. in 1979 to fewer than 20 million in 2015. Although some medical professionals believe that it is “stretching biological plausibility to associate the vast number of health disorders associated with mercury fillings,” scientific studies support the link between mercury fillings and symptoms related to Parkinson’s, lupus, Alzheimer’s, multiple sclerosis (MS), Lou Gehrig’s disease (ALS), schizophrenia, ADHD, insomnia, memory loss, neuromuscular effects, kidney failure, headaches, cognitive and motor dysfunction, autoimmune disease, depression, anxiety and autism spectrum disorder. Patients that believe their health was severely compromised by mercury fillings (many of whom experienced improved health following safe removal of their fillings) agree with IAOMT’s position that dental amalgams pose a public health threat and should be banned.

The official line of ADA, FDA, the Environmental Protection Agency and other public health organizations is that while there may be a dearth of “credible” science linking amalgam fillings to “adverse health effects”, pregnant women and children under 6 are cautioned against use. And while the FDA grants that “some individuals [may] have an allergy or sensitivity to mercury,” not enough “credible” studies exist to calculate which populations are at risk. Thus amalgams remain on the market, innocent until proven guilty. Those that report mercury poisoning are dismissed as “allergy” anomalies or as medical cases that lack apparent cause. Meanwhile, the issue has moved from hearings to federal court. In 2008, a federal class action suit was filed by the IAOMT against the FDA to reclassify dental amalgams from a Class I to a Class II medical device, indicating their potential to be harmful. The broad coalition of plaintiffs in the case included consumer advocacy groups, professional associations and individuals. In early 2012, the IAOMT brought a federal court suit seeking a ban or limitation of use of amalgam fillings. In response, the FDA docket indicated a new amendment to its standing

amalgam policy would require “… a sea change in the government’s regulation of the controversial filling material.” It promised prohibition of “the use of mercury-based dental fillings... in pregnant women, nursing mothers, children aged less than 6 years, and other groups considered sensitive to the metal’s neurotoxic vapors.” Furthermore, according to the 2012 FDA safety commission draft, “alternative materials would best be offered as the first line of restorative care, minimizing the use of dental amalgam.” Before passage, the FDA guidance was struck down on its path to the Department of Health and Human Services. Robert Reeves, a Kentucky litigator and self-described “mercury survivor”, has been bringing cases of mercury poisoning before the courts for over 30 years. He says, “on the part of the FDA and ADA, this is widespread ignorance at best and fraudulence at worst.” Reeves explains that the burden of proof falls on the victims to produce evidence linking their health-related symptoms to mercury exposure from amalgams. Two such cases were fought and won by Pennsylvanians, one filed in PA and the other in New York State. When Karen Palmer, a former Lehigh Valley dental assistant of 27 years, won her 2005 settlement, she became the first and only dental assistant in the U.S. to win an occupational mercury exposure case claiming illness and injury through workers’ compensation in Pennsylvania. In 2006, she was awarded a full decision in her social security disability case for mercury poisoning that manifested as chronic fatigue, pares-

thesia, central nervous system damage, toxic neuropathy and M.S. (Palmer was one of the plaintiffs in the 2008 and 2012 federal class actions, as well). Another longtime warrior in the fight for mercury-free dentistry is Montgomery County resident Freya Koss. In 2014, after a 14-year legal battle, her landmark case was settled outside of court with the dentist who improperly removed a mercury amalgam and replaced it with a new one. Within days of the dental work, Koss experienced a host of symptoms including double vision, light sensitivity, muscle weakness and loss of equilibrium. Neurologists diagnosed her with three life-threatening autoimmune diseases including lupus, MS and myasthenia gravis, warning that there were no known causes or cures. After discovering her symptoms were the result of having been acutely mercury poisoned, her fillings were safely removed by an IAOMT dentist, and she was treated by an alternative medical doctor who supported her slow recovery. Today, she is an impassioned health advocate and founder and director of the Pennsylvania Coalition for Mercury-Free Dentistry, the organization that spearheaded the 2009 passage of Philadelphia Councilwoman Blondell Reynolds Brown’s “Use of Amalgam in Dentistry” ordinance. Philadelphia is the first city in the nation to require distribution of an informed consent brochure advising patients of the dangers of mercury in silver amalgam fillings and FDA’s warnings for pregnant women and children. The battle is far from over; consumer advocacy groups, NGOs, lawyers, mercury-free dentist coalitions and individuals from all walks life comprise the patchwork of populations working to make mercury amalgams a part of dentistry’s past. A Local Voice for People with Hearing Loss by Julie Vitto

T

he Hearing Loss Association of America (HLAA) is the nation’s foremost advocacy organization for individuals affected by hearing loss. Founded in 1979 in Bethesda, Maryland, by Howard E. “Rocky” Stone, who had a bilateral hearing loss, HLAA is an international, nonprofit organization for people with hearing loss, their relatives and their friends. Its mission is to open up the world of communication through information, education, support and advocacy. In 2001, the HLAA-PA all-volunteer state office was established to provide information, education, support and advocacy for Pennsylvanians living with hearing loss. HLAA-PA publishes a free, quarterly newsletter that reaches more than 2,200 people and services 13 chapters throughout Pennsylvania, with new locations in development. “Telecommunications, as well as emergency preparedness for people with disabilities, is a top priority on my agenda,” says Kay Tyberg, a member of the HLAA-PA Advisory Council and chair of

the PA Telecommunications Relay Service Advisory Board. As a former Bucks County resident and someone who has experienced hearing loss herself, Tyberg has fully embraced the work of facilitating access to assistive technologies, such as Video Relay Service (VRS) and captioned telephone systems. “VRS is a way for profoundly deaf people to communicate with other deaf or hearing individuals via video through a live, on-screen interpreter. It is a huge breakthrough for the deaf community,” says Tyberg. “In a nutshell, the VRS technology is replacing the teletypewriter, or TTY, for all but those with access issues.” The captioned telephone is another device that, as Tyberg explains, many older deafened adults are more accus-

Dr. Joseph Mercola on

SIMPLE STEPS TO WELL-BEING by Judith Fertig

D

octor of Osteopathic Medicine Joseph Mercola has practiced as a boardcertified family physician for more than 30 years. His educational website, Mercola.com, has been the most visited natural health site for the past 12 years, with 12 million unique visitors each month. His three New York Times bestsellers include Effortless Healing.

With today’s overload of conflicting health information—and the temptation to self-diagnose—how can we accurately assess our status in terms of optimal wellness? One of the major principles I strongly embrace is to listen to your body and adjust your lifestyle based on the feedback it’s providing you. The seven clinically proven gauges I advise you to assess now and continue to monitor every six months or so are fasting insulin level (normal is less than five micro-international units per milliliter of blood; ideal is less than three); vitamin D level (normal is 40 to 60 nanograms per milliliter); waist-to-hip ratio (ideal for men, 0.8; for women, 0.7); body fat percentage (fitness level for women is 21 to 24 percent; for men, 14 to 17 percent); HDL to total cholesterol ratio (ideally 24 to 30 percent or higher); blood pressure (ideal numbers are 120 over 80 systolic/diastolic without medication); and uric acid level (ideal is three to five milligrams per deciliter). 32

Bucks & Montgomery County Edition

It is important to get these levels checked, because it is impossible to know without testing.

In your opinion, what is the greatest health risk Americans face today and what can we do about it right now? I’m convinced that for the typical American, the most important health step to take is to stop drinking soda, sports drinks, fruit juices or artificially flavored and sweetened waters and replace them with pure water. Most people are now aware that sodas are laced with processed sugars like high-fructose corn syrup and artificial sweeteners, but many don’t know that their favorite sport and vitamin drinks contain these sweeteners plus a host of frightening extras, including toxic chemicals like chlorine, fluoride, phthalates, BPA [bisphenol A] and disinfection byproducts.

What role do carbohydrates play? Carbs are a far dirtier fuel than fat and generate far more reactive oxygen species than fat. Some 70 years of following low-fat diet recommendations has resulted in the vast majority of dieters losing the ability to burn fat as their primary fuel. One of the most powerful strategies to regain this ability is to start a practice of regular intermittent fasting, restricting your eating window to six to 14 hours a day and fast the rest of the day. NABuxMont.com

Of course, you will want to replace a high net carb intake, or total carbs minus fiber, with healthy fats such as those in avocados, coconut oil, seeds and nuts. Avoid industrially processed omega-6 vegetable oils like corn, soy and canola.

Because an indoor, climatecontrolled, sedentary lifestyle may lead to slowly developing chronic disease, what changes do you suggest we make? Spending time outside with bare feet in contact with the ground even for short periods can yield significant benefits. It’s even better to do it with the sun shining on your bare skin. The Earth is an abundant source of free electrons, and when the sun shines on your skin a vital biological circuit forms that helps transfer energy to water throughout the body, which serves as a cellular battery. Albert Einstein won a Nobel Prize for describing this process, called the photoelectric effect. Reducing the length of time sitting each day and regularly moving is even more important for most of us than getting regular exercise. A good rule of thumb is to stand up every 15 minutes or so.

What can we do better to maintain optimal health? Two-thirds of Americans are overweight. The problems with carrying excess weight are more than aesthetic. At the root of obesity is mitochondrial metabolic dysfunction. Metabolic disorders go hand-in-hand with many of the chronic diseases plaguing Americans in record numbers—including diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure, dementia and cancer—according to numerous studies such as research by the Centers for Disease Control and the Center for the Study of Chronic Metabolic and Rare Diseases, at George Mason University. The most potent strategy to address such metabolic dysfunction is to make a strong commitment to reaching and maintaining a personally healthy level of body fat. Judith Fertig writes food health articles and cookbooks from Overland Park, KS (JudithFertig.com).

Off the Eastern Shore of Virginia are the barrier islands which protect seaside tidal creeks, bays, marshes and the mainland, providing habitat for abounding nature, including migratory songbirds, raptors, shorebirds, shellfish and finfish. Visitors are welcomed with the sign “You’ll Love Our Nature.” For many in the D.C. region, Virginia’s Eastern Shore is becoming the place not only to discover on vacation, but also to find their dream retreat or retirement home. On one side of the peninsula lies the Chesapeake Bay, the largest estuary in the U.S. With more than 150 rivers and creeks flowing into the bay, it provides sandy tidal areas, suitable for boat docks and marinas, as well as beautiful beaches to enjoy. Except for a few “grandfathered” properties, the barrier islands are uninhabited; however, they can be easily enjoyed by kayak or boat. There are many free public boat launches available for easy access to the islands or deep sea fishing in the Atlantic Ocean. Fourteen of the barrier islands make up the Virginia Coastal Reserve and has earned the distinction of a United Nations Man and Biosphere Reserve. Since the 1970s, nonprofit, federal and state conservation partners, including The Nature Conservancy, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, the National Park Service and the Commonwealth of Virginia have invested more than $100 million to protect and restore 133,000 acres of coastal and mainland habitats, including barrier islands, marshes and upland forests, and have led to a reintroduction of a species of bay scallops to the coastal bays, which had not been seen there for more than 80 years due to habitat loss. The bounty and beauty of the Eastern Shore are important economic drivers for the entire region, with agriculture, including aqua-farming, research and tourism as the industries that provide this growth. Additionally, the Eastern Shore hosts one of the National Science Foundation’s prestigious Long-Term Ecological Research (LTER) Program sites operated by the University of Virginia, which has transformed the region into a center for world-class coastal science research. With such bounty and beauty to offer, as well as the relaxed lifestyle in the area, the Eastern Shore of Virginia is noted in many retirement guides as one of the best places in the country to live or retire. In one’s own backyard it is possible to fish, hunt, bird-watch, kayak, golf or simply enjoy the beach. For those looking for indoor activities, there is excellent shopping and antique hunting, as well as cultural and community events. Recently popping up throughout the area are kayak trips with stops at local wineries and oyster tastings. Plus, the weather is good all year. Even though residents enjoy all four seasons, the winters are not hard and the mean average temperature is 59 degrees, which keeps energy costs low. Most of the homes are on large three-to-five acre tracks and zoning is for single family homes. These protections come from the commitment to environmental conservation, but the benefit for the homeowner is a spacious lot with marvelous views, and in many cases, waterfront or beachfront access. As more people seek a balanced lifestyle with the opportunity to enjoy healthy air and water, it is unlikely that the gem of the Eastern Shore of Virginia will stay hidden for long. The Kirkwood Group offers beautiful waterfront properties, beachfront properties and water access properties along the Chesapeake Bay and the creeks and coves that feed into the bay. For example, High Knoll at Country Club offers a 4,500-square-foot waterfront home on 106 acres or 24 lots of 3+ acres each. To see their current listings, visit KirkwoodOnTheShore.com. Detoxify for Health and Wellness

by Cathy Windland

T

oxins are all around and hard to avoid. They are in the air (fumes, chemical cleaners), food (pesticides) and some personal care products (chemical fragrances, preservatives). They enter the body through the skin, lungs and mouth, and if they do not exit the body, toxic overload could lead to headaches, constipation, fatigue, skin issues and an overall general malaise. Detoxification is a natural and essential way to help promote health

and prevent disease. In simple terms, detoxification involves awakening and releasing toxins from the body. It takes time and effort to truly rid the body of a toxic overload. An effective first step to waking up accumulated toxins is to flood the body with good, clean nutrition: plant-based, organic, whole foods and plenty of pure water. Some herbs with detoxifying properties, such as dandelion root, may also be helpful. This is only the tip of the iceberg—using the power of

nutrition can have profound effects on cleansing the body. Once toxins have been awakened, they must exit the body. Detoxification is not complete until elimination occurs, either through the colon or the skin. Without elimination, the toxins will settle back into the body. Additional practices, such as dry skin brushing, lymphatic massage or colon hydrotherapy may supplement and support the body’s natural cleansing functions. Body cleansing is a uniquely individual endeavor. Education, practice, professional support and listening to the body are crucial to finding an appropriate detoxification method. Cathy Windland is a National Board Certified Colon Hydrotherapist and owner of Inner Spa, an organic wellness spa specializing in holistic cleansing service, located in Newtown. It is currently offering 7-, 14- and 21-day cleanse packages. For more information, call 215-968-9000 or visit InnerSpa.org. See ad, page 37.

magine an exercise system that strengthens the body enough to be used in training world-class athletes, stretches more safely than any form of yoga and expands the core training concepts of Pilates into natural full-body movements like those used in everyday reaching and walking, along with jumping and swimming. This is the Gyrotonic system,” says Angela Crowley, a Gyrotonic master teacher, trainer and exercise spa owner in Coral Gables, Florida. A former gymnast and dancer, Crowley took to the Gyrotonic approach after being severely injured in an automobile accident. “Traditional physical therapy only addressed certain aspects without bringing me back to normal,” she says. “Running and yoga felt intolerable. Gyrotonic exercises became a perfect bridge. I was able to rehabilitate safely while challenging myself to return to normal expectations and now, beyond.” The system of fluid movements leverages specially designed equipment that can be customized for every individual.

with non-invasive, restful energy therapy

Find an illustrative video and search classes by postal code at Gyrotonic.com. “The Gyrotonic system combines elements from many different modalities into three-dimensional, circular movements. A primary focus is on all the different motions of the spine and how to create rhythmic, flowing movement within the entire body,” says Stefani Schrimpf, Gyrotonic instructor and studio owner of Physiques, in Overland Park, Kansas. “The exercises strengthen, lengthen and stretch muscles, while stimulating connective tissues around the joints. They also improve balance, flexibility and coordination. This system allows you to push beyond specific limitations and to isolate and fine tune movement skills,” says Schrimpf. While a Gyrotonic workout has similarities to yoga and Pilates, it is also unique. According to Melissa Jutras, a Pilates instructor, weightlifting coach, personal trainer and gym/studio owner of Big Blue Strength, in Lexington, Kentucky, “Hatha yoga is a series of static postures, whereas Pilates and Gyrotonic movements focus on flow, using equipment to enhance core strength, stability, control, coordination and flexibility. The difference is that Gyrotonic exercises works on three dimensions with every circular movement, like the body naturally moves. It uses weights and a pulley system, whereas Pilates is more linear and uses spring tension.” Jutras believes the Gyrotonic system, Pilates and yoga all complement weightlifting and strength training, affording a mind-body balance. “The body then experiences low- and high-threshold exercise, low-intensity and highintensity, weight-bearing and non-weight-bearing activity,” she says. Crowley sees the Gyrotonic approach complementing virtually any activity. “The exercises help practitioners learn how to move more efficiently, easily, powerfully, gracefully and successfully in every facet of life.” The method is also offered without equipment in the form of Gyrokinesis, a flowing class done on a chair, mat and standing. This affordable option can be practiced independently at home. “My youngest client is 7, my oldest is 94,” relates Crowley. “We have clients that have become bored by repetitive exercise and enjoy the limitless variations of movements that keep both their minds and muscles alert. We have chronic pain clients that have exhausted other medical options and are improving their ability to function more optimally and enjoying their lives again.” Both Schrimpf and her husband, Juan Trujillo, teach the Gyrotonic method. “Our greatest reward is the feedback we get. Once people try it, they’re hooked,” she says. “It transforms how people think about movement and brings a sense of joy and accomplishment. They feel their joints becoming more supple and balanced, and find their bodies responding well to the natural movement patterns.”

Thumbs-Up on Fats Good Fat Doesn’t Make Us Fat by Judith Fertig

I

n an era of too much information, the role of fats in our diet has been a victim of not enough information. Today’s turnaround in nutritional thinking acknowledges natural fats as being vital to heart health and weight loss.

Heart Health Benefit

A recent metastudy in the Annals of Internal Medicine, a journal of the American College of Physicians, concluded that saturated fat does not appear to increase heart disease risk, overturning almost 60 years of accepted medical thought. The researchers analyzed data from 76 studies involving more than 600,000 people and found that those that ate the most saturated, or “bad”, fat did not show a higher risk of cardiovascular disease compared with those that ate the least. Note that processed trans fats remain a villain, still deemed a risk to heart health per the metastudy. The misleading information began in the 1950s, when Physiologist Ancel Keys, Ph.D., discovered a correlation between diets high in saturated fats and higher cholesterol levels. Soon, the lowfat diet was born. In 2000, further research introduced the concepts of good and bad fats. More 38

Bucks & Montgomery County Edition

recent analysis confirmed this finding with the refinement that saturated fats increase both types of cholesterol. However, the latest research from the journal BMJ shows that saturated fat does not increase the number of LDL, or “bad”, particles, a predictor of cardiovascular disease. Instead, it makes existing LDL particles larger, a fairly benign situation in regard to such disease.

Weight Loss Benefit

Fat doesn’t even make you fat, claims Mark Hyman, a well-known medical doctor in Lenox, Massachusetts, and author of Eat Fat, Get Thin: Why the Fat We Eat Is the Key to Sustained Weight Loss and Vibrant Health. “The theory that all calories have the same impact on your weight and metabolism remains one of the most persistent nutrition myths,” says this practitioner of functional medicine who points out that we’ve been sidetracked by wrong thinking. “Eating fat can make you lean. Healthy cell walls made from highquality fats are better able to metabolize insulin, which keeps blood sugar better regulated. Without proper blood sugar control, the body socks away fat for a rainy day. The right fats also inNABuxMont.com

crease fat burning, diminish hunger and reduce fat storage,” he notes. Whole30, a 30-day diet revolving around clean eating, also emphasizes healthy fats. Devised in 2009 by Dallas Hartwig, a functional medicine practitioner and certified sports nutritionist, and Melissa Hartwig, a certified sports nutritionist, the program aims to reduce inflammation, detoxify the body and reset metabolism. The Salt Lake City, Utah, authors of the New York Times bestselling The Whole30 recommend healthy fats to keep us full and rev up metabolism. Recommended healthy fats include coconut milk and oil, avocados, olive oil, organic ghee (clarified butter) and raw nuts. Josh Axe, a natural medicine practitioner and clinical nutritionist in Nashville, Tennessee, recommends the healthy fats contained in avocados, organic butter and ghee from grass-fed cows and goats, coconut oil, extra virgin olive oil, and other foods high in omega-3 fatty acids such as salmon, sardines, walnuts, chia seeds and flax seeds. “Butter’s experiencing a comeback as a healthy fat as its benefits become more widely known,” says Axe. “The omega-6 and omega-3 fatty acids in butter help the brain function properly and improve skin health.” Ghee, an ancient Indian version of butter, is lactose- and casein-free, while being loaded with fat-soluble vitamins A, D and E, says Axe. These vitamins are best absorbed by the body when they’re in a fat substance and then stored in the gastrointestinal tract, keeping metabolism and digestion on track, he notes. Ghee’s high level of vitamin K2, best known as a natural blood coagulator, “also helps strengthen bones, while the fatty acids found in it improve digestion and reduce inflammation.”

Healthy Levels of Fat

“If you’re active, about 40 percent of your calories should come from carbohydrates, another 30 percent from protein and the other 30 percent from fat in general,” says Axe, adding that this has the added benefit of helping prevent arteriosclerosis. “Some people may consume a greater percentage of healthy fats if the goal is to become a fat burner.” “There is no one-size-fits-all approach to weight loss and health,” Hyman reminds us. “Low-carb, higher-

fat diets work for most people, but for some, they may not be optimal in the long term.” Judith Fertig writes food health articles and cookbooks from Overland Park, KS (JudithFertig.com).

Prime Sources of Healthy Fats Functional medicine physician Mark Hyman suggests that we include four to five servings of fat in our diets every day. “In the last five years, the scientific evidence has been mounting that high-fat diets outperform low-fat diets for weight loss and for revising every single indication of heart disease risk, including abnormal cholesterol, diabetes, hypertension and inflammation,” he says. Each amount listed indicates a serving size. Nuts (a handful of walnuts, almonds, macadamia nuts or cashews) Seeds (a handful of pumpkin, sunflower of flaxseed) Most plant-based liquid oils (one tablespoon of olive, safflower, sesame, avocado, macadamia, grape seed or walnut oil)

t’s fascinating to observe how family life has evolved over time. Families in the 1950s and ‘60s were quite conservative with rules and limits. A teenage boy with long hair was considered radical. The ‘70s was the era of rebellion—teens wore long hair, attended protests and used mind-altering drugs. Each of these eras posed unique challenges to the parent-child dynamic. The excessive use of electronic devices is the parental complaint of our times. It affects kids of all ages; even toddlers seem to intrinsically know how to use many devices. Video screens do a great job of keeping kids quiet and happy for many hours. What parent doesn’t want to make their kids happy? However, what really makes kids happy is getting not what they want, but what they need. And what they need is what we all need: acceptance, affection, appreciation, approval and attention. We cannot do that when our heads are buried in a screen. When we set limits on technology time and pay attention to feelings, we know and sense that something is missing. We need to feel the warmth of a long hug. We need to gaze into our children’s eyes and see their souls and accept them on a deep level. We need to really listen attentively to their words and the feelings behind them. We are lucky to have practical therapeutic tools and practices, such as EFT, that can help open up this communication and bring intimacy back into family life. Let’s start today. Delia Nessim is a counselor in private practice specializing in EFT and family therapy. For more information, call 610-416-7535, email Delia@DNCounseling.com or visit DNCounseling.com. WHAT IS

Ascension? by Elizabeth Joyce

A

scension is the path of those who are choosing to consciously evolve. It’s a personal choice to boldly step into the unknown in order to expand into an experience that is entirely new. Ascension is actively choosing to expand into higher consciousness. Ascension is merging with one’s higher self, opening one’s heart and expanding to reunite with “source”, the divine light, and all levels and layers of one’s authentic self. It is returning to the experience of divine light and experiencing the highest levels of unconditional love and divine alignment with pure source light in every area of life. Ascension is not something that happens to us on a certain date, or that we unknowingly or unwillingly stumble into. Awareness will help us to adapt to the ever-changing circumstances of life around us. In addition to meditation, we should learn and seek out new

perspectives, validate what we learn to gain wisdom and knowledge, implement what will serve us, love in every moment, move forward and grow. This is the ascension path—the path of increased awareness, higher consciousness and illumination; the master path of love. Higher vibrational living awaits us, as we consciously choose to ascend. Not all will ascend in this lifetime, but those who are drawn to learn more have begun the process. The total enlightened and illuminated self already exists within each of us. Our challenge is to integrate our universal light into our being by working with the new spiritual chakras to bring our spiritual power into the physical. We must each open our heart, become aware, and shine with the full brilliance of our blessed higher self and spiritual being— the Universal Body—which we can now access and use, here in the physical. We must each recognize ourselves

as the one: every moment is our opportunity to beam out and reflect love, because now, unlike anytime before, is the time. We may feel that it is especially difficult to stay on our spiritual path in these days of political difficulties. The real issue is not that we stumble and fall away from our center, but rather that we work to try again and again to return to that center. It can seem so hard to hold onto the vibration of the State of Being. It is entirely understandable to recognize that we will stumble and fall when we struggle with that which we see and hear—and this can be harmful to ourselves and other people. Many of us are at a place in our paths where we are facing strong challenges from within our very own selves, and we need to devoutly practice our learning of that which is a higher path to walk in life. Then the world will experience a raise in consciousness. Elizabeth Joyce is an internationally respected speaker, psychic, energetic healer and author of Ascension— Accessing the Fifth Dimension and The NEW Spiritual Chakras. She is based in Doylestown. s a fourthgeneration healer and intuitive empath, Lisa Gercie guides clients to find peace, comfort and connection within. Gercie is the founder of The Hypnotic Healer, in Bethlehem, and has studied metaphysics with world-renowned mentors, shamans and teachers for the majority of her life. She graduated from Lehigh University’s Counseling Psychology program and blends traditional counseling and hypnosis with metaphysical healing and hypnotic techniques. “With metaphysical hypnosis, people are going into a relaxed or hypnotic state, which allows their soul to heal,” says Gercie. Clients come to her with a range of emotional issues that often manifest as anxiety and depression, or even physical symptoms such as arthritis, diabetes and cancer. “Hypnotic healing sessions energetically cleanse, balance and align the chakra frequencies for ultimate health, healing and well-being,” she says. Clients report feeling sensations of energy, heat and the chills while on Gercie’s healing table. Some just require one session, while others benefit from several over time. “Every soul is different and will heal when it’s ready,” says Gercie. In addition to healing sessions, Gercie helps clients with past life regressions, where they come to understand a greater sense of the patterns of their soul. Typically one, two or three past lives can be experienced during a session. Gercie also guides clients to travel to another dimension of consciousness in which they can connect with their loved ones and/or pets that have passed on. “It’s a spiritual tool to connect,” says Gercie. “Especially on those days when we just wish we had another chance to see our loved one or to tell them things we were never able to.” Location: 3005 Brodhead Rd., Ste. 260, Bethlehem.
