Panchana Zubeen's an unique creation Palmee barthakur "Panchana" - the saga of the soul and heart that has been sung to cry... to express the void and desire after separation from the beloved! The song of longing and separation representing the genre called Birha, a very popular genre in Indian music (both classical and folk).. touching people's heart easily . How beautifully the Rabha folk song (sung by Panchana in her powerful voice ) has been blended with a modern style (sung by Zubeen Garg from the core of his heart & soul??) created a perfect fusion music of our time. Above it the powerful lyrics by Sasanka Sameer is a treat for the listeners. The most enchanting part of the song that made me to pen down my feelings is the way Zubeen Garg has sung it! The pace of singing the song, voice dynamics, expressing the emotions in throwing the words, maintaining the birha mood has took the person's singing as well as modern music of Assam to a different class! Such composition and singing can be compared with the soulful song "Sanware tore bin jiya" by Ustad Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan saahab from the movie Bandit Queen which falls in the same genre of music as per my observation and knowledge. Being Zubeen Garg's sister I have never taken the privilege to praise his works upfront rather choose to be calm and neutral as per the nature of my composed thoughts. But this song Panchana, he has sung like never before showing his unbeatable strive towards enriching and learning of music with maturity made me to say Yes You are Kanchanjangha!! The Unstoppable.ď‚ż

ZubeenDa An Icon As A Gift To The World Utpal Kakati Being educated from an English medium background since childhood, I inculcated the interest for listening to various forms of Western Music like Pop, Rock, Jazz, RAP and Blues from schooldays. The deep understanding and desire to listen Assamese songs actually developed in me while I was studying Graduation in Delhi way back in 1996 when I got the first taste of a soulful voice from ZubeenDa’s “Pakhimeli diye”song. Living away from my motherland at that time, I hardly remember the umpteen times I repeatedly listened to this song until I felt I was actually missing the essence of our very own Assamese fusion music with the Western tunes. Since then, I have been a die-hard fan of ZubeenDa’s songs and often try to imitate his singing skill with the unique humming which he delivers with such an ease of passion in his iconic songs. Over the years, I followed almost all his songs and memorized crisply most of them adding an immense sense of pride and contentment to realize that an Icon is born in our motherland Assam as a Gift for the rest of the world. One of the unexampled feature of ZubeenDa’s songs is the way he conveys the message of Assamese sentiments to the world by fusion of folk songs sung in our diverse socio-cultural platform. We often hear his “Bagarumba” with the flavor of the Bodo musical melody or “PitolerKolosh” sung with the Koch Rajbongshi jingle bringing the multi-cultural tribal

music enveloped together under one umbrella of folk songs sung in Assam. The wave of ZubeenDa’s music escalated into an epic level when the people of Assam living in every nook and corner of the world listened to his experiment done with our very own larger than life “Bihu” songs. He brought an altogether different taste to the “Bihugeet” and “Bihu-husori” by adding the instrumental extravaganza to the basic tunes besides the melody modulation in terms of its words used to describe the way of Assamese life and its significant connection with “Bihu” as a festival alive in blood and flesh of every Assamese. Now, more people are listening to Bihu songs in general as a song to cherish rather than just as a festival song which was enjoyed mostly in pre-ZubeenDa’s era. This was one of the most unparalleled contribution to the world of Assamese music industry by Zubeen Da which history shall stand as a witness forever. We wonder how an Assamese, only after our very own “Bard of Brahmaputra” respected Late Dr.Bhupen Hazarika, has managed to light the glory of unique diverse forms of Assamese folk music as an inspiration to the mainland India and the world collectively on a distinctive platform. Zubeen Da has given a significant impetus to the development of Assamese folk culture and its message to every individual towards living a life filled with simplicity, fun and brotherhood which is commonly noticed in each and every Assamese soul wherever they live. He has sung many songs in other languages and dialects, including Bishnupriya, Manipuri, English, Goalpariya, Kannada, Karbi, Khasi, Malayalam, Marathi, Nepali, Odia, Sanskrit, Tamil, Telugu and Tiwa. Zubeen Da has also been a great contributor to the Assamese film industry with his remarkable performances in films like “Mission China”, “Kanchanjangha”, “GanekiAane”, “Mon Jai” and many more. He has also contributed as a script writer in many of these films and produced them on his own which equally depicts his multifaceted talent as an ambassador of cultural heritage of Assam. Some of his scripted poems are soul-searching and are now available in the form of concise collection in the name of “ZubeenorPodyo”. Many of his writings are based on the psycho-socio cultural aspect of the Assamese way of life and its impact on the society at large.

The last but not the least character which has recently been evolved quite actively in Zubeen Da is that of his philanthropic contributions in the mass movement lead by the cine-artists of Assam against the implementation of Citizenship Amendment Act, 2019 in India. A majority of people from Assam have directly opposed to the idea of implementing the draconian Act which ultimately progressed to the suffering of unemployed youths of Assam and their future at large. ZubeenDa’s involvement to this mass movement greatly inspired the youth and their active participation to protest the various provisions of the Act in Assam. We may therefore sum-up by concluding that Zubeen Da has been gifted as an Icon not only for our beloved motherland Assam but also a treasure trove for the rest of the communities of the world who deserves to be known for his humanitarian contribution in the upliftment of cultural, social and economic well-being of the people of every caste, creed and colour he came across with. I wish, many more such Zubeen are born and bring transformation to the society as he did and I am sure untill many years to come,ZubeenDa’s contribution shall be etched in the hearts of every Assamese with love and utmost passion and glory. May You Live Long With Melody At Heart In Every Assamese, Zubeen Da!

I can fall but never fail. Zubeen Garg

ZUBEEN GARG AND HIS CULTURAL SIGNIFICANCE IN MODERN DAY ASSAM Bistirna Barua When Jibon Borthakur alias Zubeen Garg erupted in the Assamese Music Scenario of the early 1990s, it wasn,t a piece of cake for him. On one hand was the giant Dr. Bhupen Hazarika with his gravitas & grace, vividly describing the socio-political and cultural scenario of this state with his magical words. Words, which were a conjuring specially when juxtaposed with the tunes heavily inspired by folk from all parts of North East and on the other hand there was Jitul Sonowal who had taken the genre of Western rock based melodies of Arun Das, to the next level. Then there was also the increasing tendency of Assamese modern song being sung by Bollywood singers with their questionble pronunciation and dicition. Zubeen Garg quaintly changed all that. His tunes were contemporary yet rooted, his meldodies had both the shrieks of the city avd the silence of the villages. His voice was, in short. significantly more melodic and with more range than most of his predecessors. So when his tunes, had his father,s word, Hiru da,s rhymes for support and with the magnanimity of his voice, he made the 90s generation newly fall in love with Assmese melodies. Moreover, with parents of our generation being die hard disciples of Bhupen Mama we all grew up with his song and maybe (just maybe) some of us wanted to reble and sing our kind of songs. Yes, often our kind of songs were deprived of the greater sociopoltical context, our songs were maybe mainly about love, longing and loss. But in our own ways, singing Zubeen was maybe our kind of subtle rebellion against the serenading monarchy of just one voice.

Later Zubeen, almost single handedly brought in life to this Assamese music industry by bringing in cassettes of Folk songs of so many kind in so many languages. While Bhupen Mama was a book to be read, Zubeen become a dictionary to be used. While Bhupen Mama was a benchmark, Zubeen become an achivable target. While Bhupen Mama made us love music, love our cultural, Zubeen made us sing, he made us dance and he made us love Bhupen Mama more. While Bhupen Mama was an exception, Zubeen Garg was a much needed aberration. Zubeen Garg was needed then and is needed now because he is not merely a person but a statement of hope, possibilities and of the beauty of following one,s passion. But it,s also equally true that i miss the Zubeen Garg of the 90s. A Zubeen Garg who spoke for and on my behalf. Now he still speaks. But sometimes, i wonder for whome? Maybe i have grown way too older, or he has become a bit too young. But the fact is. we need him speaking and hopefully more with his music. For you burn a book, you can crumple newspapers, but you cannot annihilate a tune. Happy Birthday Zubeen Da. Stay Blessed.ď‚ż

People say I don’t have attitude, yes I have... only for the rich. Zubeen Garg

Zubeen Garg is an emotion Devashree Baruah Whenever I get to speak or write about him,I am always short of words. Obviously it’s impossible to put my feelings into words for him. Since childhood,I have loved him, adored him and most importantly worshipped him like a living God. He is a like beautiful feeling to me,a heavenly feeling. I have always wanted to see him in person and yes it happened for real. That particular day was the happiest day of my life. Literally,I had goosebumps. I couldn’t speak anything. All I did was staring at him like an idiot. After that I met him several times. Surprisingly, every single time it felt like the first time. He has a heart of gold,no denial in that. Starting from ‘Anamika’ to ‘Sila’ his voice is loved by every single human. A voice, which is an emotion for everyone of Assam. Morever,he has added his magical voice to many blockbusters of Bollywood and also to different languages. He is someone who doesn’t pretend anything. A real and childlike soul having a heart of gold who is ready to help anyone anytime. If I go on writing about him and his voice,it won’t end ever. Every song of him is a masterpiece. For me,Zubeen Garg is the eternal Sun which will rise daily. I just pray to the almighty for his good health. Lastly, not a blind follower of him but I am someone who loves him wholeheartedly and selflessly. You are a brand of Assam,Zubeen Da. Be the same as you are. 

To Critique a Humming Bird Unmilan Kalita Musically speaking, he is a prodigy. There is perhaps not much contestation in that fact. The spell of this musical prodigy encapsulated the mass in a new manner – it was a time when in home, India shed its protectionist skin and in the outer world, the dissolution of the Warsaw Pact marked the end of the Soviet block’s run for the ‘Cold War’. At a time like the days of 1991-1992, when the liberal capitalist model saw a quick, worldwide rise; I bet even Gorbachev wouldn’t think it in his wildest dream that a prodigy was initiating a ‘musical perestroika’ in the land of Assam with his nascent entry into the musical arena at his tender end teen years. I shall refrain myself from gauging his musical endeavours, the humongous crowds present in his concerts itself is a testimony of his fanbase. But in this regard, I wish to interject by bringing a particular notion related to the ‘crowd’. A crowd has no individual moral nor ethical responsibilities. What distinguishes a crowd from a mob is the audacity of unleashing the lack of social responsibility in a dehuman manner. Therefore, the leader to whom the crowd looks up to has a Sisyphus’s rock on his head that he needs to balance. Zubeen Garg is a social momentum, if not the stereotypical ‘heartthrob’, to which a majority of youth is influenced by. That momentum, if not channelled properly, can hamper the trajectory to a progressive future.

Nevertheless, Zubeen Garg has given our age a musical niche. That’s a fortunate part. Not many knows that Zubeen Garg’s music and background score for Munin Baruah’s ‘Dinabondhu’ (which I personally consider as the qualitative magnum opus of Zubeen’s cinematic career) was done as a dedication to Bhabendranath Saikia. The use of lesser known musical instruments in this region like Sarangi along with local, folk sounds to create a sensibility of ‘Assamese poverty’ was spot on by Zubeen Garg. Also, a purely lesser electronic score made the film qualitatively adjustable with the storyline. An enigma that surrounds Zubeen Garg is the ‘socialist enigma’. As someone who holds Ernesto Che Guevarra so close to his heart, I personally find its time for Zubeen Garg to understand Fidel Castro. While Che had a painful death in an ambush, the mantlepiece of Cuba’s future was laid in the hands of Castro. The post revolution years hold much of the obstacles as a society goes through a gradual, structural change in the meanwhile. Zubeen Garg too, my instinct says, needs to come out of the revolutionary shoes of Che and take in a responsible armour of Castro. Meanwhile, Zubeen Garg can explore other socialist icons too. Be it Thomas Shankara of Burkina Faso or Allende of Chile. My only fear would be if Zubeen Garg strats following Uttar Pradesh politics in the name of being ‘socialist’. Questions have arisen, and will keep on arising surrounding Zubeen Garg. It’s a collateral return of his popularity. Youths from across political spectrum – be it a hardcore jatiyotabadi, a Leftist, a dedicated cadre of ABVP or a publicly ‘apolitical’ youth – each will hum to Mon Jai when romantic grief seeps in at some point of time. That’s Zubeen Garg. He connects across differences. Happy Birthday Zubeen Garg.

Destined Encounter Namrata Talukdar This poem is dedicated to that moment of my first flight in life where I met Sir. After I took the vows with my beloved the dream journey to God’s own country began, the trip to Kerela. But that moment in Kolkata Airport was so deeply etched in my heart that I started writing many more poem on chance encounters.Yes one of my reason why i write poetry is those melodious tunes and meaningful lyrics of your songs. Zubeen Garg Sir. This poem is to relive that moment when there were so many first times in my life, my first flight, my first outstation and my first meet with my inspiration.

Destined Encounter A love filled air without a name Why not christen it as ‘Anamika’, where the first of many To mesmerize and enthrall, a cast was spelled by your voice. Holding the hand of faith I am on this enchanted voyage In the abode of clouds and the sky with hopes. I saw you refused to believe the fate Isaw you again and mind sings with disbelief ‘Tumi jaanu Xosaane moromore Maya’’.

Yes, in my first flight of life I see and feel the presence of the vocals we only heard Feel the person, a wish to talk and discuss the magnus of feelings Stored in his collosal mind of perpetual brilliance. Destiny was smilling on us Wished the time to halt then and there But the wings of it is unstoppable It flies and flies, as in my favorite lines “Pakhi meli jaa Uri’’. And then the “Jantra’’ in our hand did it’s work, The task to capture time through the lens Took me back to 2004, the album had a role play The board exams and the songs, paralled to each other, Counted the shutters in the camera, one two three And the moment got sealed forever. The destined, emotional and magical encounter with the legend and his ardent fan was over. Anamika-Zubeen Garg Sir’s first album Anamika (1992) meaning someone without a name. Tumi jaanu xosane moromore Maya -Lyrics from Sir’s song Maya, Album Maya (2004) “Are you for real or is it a beautiful dream” Pakhi meli jaa uri- Lyrics from the song Paakhi by Sir, Album Paakhi (1999), Spread your wings and fly Jantra- Album by Sir (2004) meaning a Machine.

Zubeen Manmayuri Lahkar A star that shall always shine, Sparkling voice with a smoothing effect. The utterance of words are soft, Pronouncing clearly straight from the heart. One can take a dive into his world, A world of devine music. The impression of the melodious tone will remain a life long. An inspirational being, an example for one and all. Nation’s representative for truth, And a selfless human ever seen.
