Editor’s Note And so it begins. The start of exciting times ahead. Last month, you were treated to the Campus Plus magazine revamp. At the same time, our magazine was also made available at your nearest bookstore and newsstands. For the most part of the revamp was the promise to be bigger and better – a promise that we’ll continue to keep with this month’s issue.

With our 58th Merdeka Day right around the corner, we figured it’d be apt to get both Narmi and Prema Yin on our cover. Turn a couple of pages in and you’ll find our exclusive interview with the inspiring duo as they give us the lowdown on what makes Malaysia truly a place they call home. The singer-songwriters also dished out the dirt on their personal “proudest Malaysian moment” - did you know that Prema Yin’s brothers won Malaysia a field hockey game during the Commonwealth Games? Yup. We didn’t either! That and more from page 34 – 39. An unorthodox spin comes from ultrahumble Ariff Johanis, one of Malaysia’s top drifters. The down-to-earth daredevil keeps it real while spilling the secrets on the art of drifting, with some surprises in tow. What surprises, you ask? Let’s just say that we certainly didn’t expect video games (of all things!) to have helped him with racing techniques (pages 72 – 73).

To add verve to our revamp, we’ve added more “How To”s in our hip hop dance section where we continue guide you through the very basics of the hip hop culture. In this issue, you’ll find some insights on b-boying, more commonly known as breakdancing. To the aspiring breakers, you’re going to love the handy tips on pages 38 – 39. Speaking of dance, you know what else we think is exciting? The amount of events lined up to rock Malaysia this whole month, that have left us literally gasping for air. #GoodVibesFest featuring Ash, Modest Mouse, The Smashing Pumpkins, and more? Linkin Park’s “Living Things” World Tour Live in Malaysia? Metallica’s Asian tour with Kuala Lumpur firmly on the grid? Looks like some of us won’t be getting any sleep! Check out more listings on page 58. So, excited yet? Like I said, this is only the beginning...

Yours in cheerful unweirdness,

Lainey Editor

Although it’s a one-off creation and isn’t road legal, the CC100 has lights, a heater, and electronic stabilisation program (ESP). There’s a rumour that it could be sold off to a private owner for “a mid-ranking six-figure sum” Aston says.

Monochrome print is a trend that has exists since forever. I love monochrome print because it is simple and sleek yet outstanding. I play with patterns instead of just sticking to plain solid black or white for my outfit.

You don’t have to take hours mixing and assembling a full outfit. Black and its sister side of grey will always be in trend. I’ve paired a bright pink cap to add a pop of colour to my outfit. You can try it with any bright neon colour or accessory to spice up the outfit. No worries if the colour matches or clashes, that’s the best part about monochrome!

Checkered monochrome is classic and they easily bring out the retro 60’s feeling. For vintage lovers, you should definitely try this out. I matched my monochrome blouse with a black leather skirt simply because the leather skirt is one of the coolest pieces to spice up my outfit! If you don’t prefer a feminine style like mine, of course, you can try matching the blouse with a pair of black tights to show off your sexy figure.

Retinoic Acid & AHA Another ingredient is retinoic acid, a vitamin A derivative that stimulates the shedding of the upper epidermal layers, which includes dark-pigmented skin cells. This causes skin thinning which makes skin more sensitive to sunlight. Alpha hydroxyl acids (AHA) function in a similar way, prompting exfoliation of the skin. It is highly advisable to protect the skin with sunscreen or there’s a possibility of ending up with even more pigment when using these types of products.

Hydroquinone (BHA)

A REALITY CHECK ON WHITENING CREAMS WORDS JQ LEE

S

kin-lightening products are the rage in Asia. Admit it, we all want to be fair so that people will see us as beautiful. But how much do we really know about the science behind these products and can whitening products be doing more harm than good? Let’s just sit back and think, how many times have we been sucked into buying products that states “for a fairer looking skin”, “whitening”, “lightens dark spots” .etc? I’m sure most of us had experienced that at least once in our lifetime. We can’t help but yearn for a fairer skin due to the promoted ideology of fairer people being prettier

with a higher chance of being happily successful in life. In other words, they tend to get away with everything easily and opportunities seem to be constantly knocking on their doors.

The key is to have the right information. Not all ingredients are damaging to your skin, we just need to know what to avoid when shopping for whitening products. Here’re some eye-opening tips.

Honestly, there’s really no harm in wanting a little enhancement. It’s cool that you take good care of your skin by exfoliating, and use some skin brightening products to make you look better.

Niacinamide

The problem comes when people try to brighten beyond their natural colour and when consumers plunge headlong into their quest for a perfect pearlescent complexion without knowing the side effects that awaits them.

One common active ingredient found in skin-lightening creams is niacinamide, a vitamin B3 derivative that stops melanin from surfacing to the upper part of the skin. When they remain in the lower layers of the skin, the darkening is not visible on the surface. It stops darkening from occurring and reduces the dark spots that are already visible. It seems to be the safest ingredient so far due to the lack of evidence

One of the most effective and the most toxic ingredients in whitening agents. It penetrates the skin and inhibits the production of skin pigment. When less pigment is produced, the skin will appear to be lighter as the old darker skin sheds and expose the new lighter skin underneath. The process usually takes around 7 days but can be sped up when accompanied by AHA based products. The results are temporary, and continuous usage is required for maintenance. The danger is due to the lack of melanin in our skin where it increases the exposure to UVA and UVB rays deep in the skin that will ultimately cause skin cancer. Hydroquinone is banned in the UK unless it is prescribed by a dermatologist or medical professional but it is widely available in most countries.

Kojic Acid Finally, kojic acid, derived from Vitamin C, is no stranger to whitening products. It works like hydroquinone, blocking melanin production in the skin. However, most people don’t know that many commercial creams contain too low a concentration of the chemical in order to be effective. At the end of the day, it really depends on you to be more alert and know what are the ingredients in the product that you are buying. Stay aware, because it’s better to be safe than sorry! Vanity Trove The Premier Beauty Discovery Platform

Beauty sample kits are the newest twist on the book-of-the-month-club concept and we understand why women love them so much. It’s the thrill of scoring something unexpected that provides us the pleasure. The variety packs of makeup, hair, nail, fragrance, and skincare products are delivered to your door for a certain fee but the samples inside can be worth several times more. Vanity Trove is one of the pioneers to introduce beauty box in Malaysia and we managed to stalk the cofounders of Vanity Trove, Kiki Loo, and Aidan Chan, to join us for a little chit-chat session.

1. There are more and more beauty boxes popping up in Malaysia. What makes Vanity Trove different from the rest? We are the only beauty box with regional presence in Singapore, Thailand, Indonesia, Taiwan, Vietnam and Malaysia. We have just launched our new service – customised box. Ladies are required to fill up their beauty profile to see recommended products suited for them. From there, ladies can choose their preferred products and share their experience, reviews and provide “like” on our website. Besides

30

CAMPUS PLUS

that, VanityTrove is also a sharing platform whereby ladies will be plugged into the latest happenings of people you follow on VanityTrove. Read up on their latest reviews, brand and product likes, and products they wish for. It’s like Facebook but for beauty.

2. What are the top five beauty items popular among your subscribers? Based on our products ranking which generated from the number of “Likes” from our members: • Urban Decay Naked Palette • Urban Decay Naked 2 • Benefit Cosmetics the POREfessional • SK-ll Facial Treatment Essence

3. What’s the difference between BB cream and CC cream? Which would you recommend better and what brand is good? BB cream stands for blemish balm or beauty balm. It provides coverage with additional skin care benefits like SPF, moisturiser, anti-oxidants. Some ladies replace foundation with BB cream due to its lighted texture which creates the natural make up. CC cream is also known as Colour Control or Colour Correcting cream. It’s used to cover issues like redness, uneven skin tone. CC cream provides better coverage and easier to be used for blending with other products like foundation, primer. About brand, it’s very individual. It really depends on your skin type, skin tone, skin concerns, the desired make up effect you want to create, occasion, weather, etc.

WITH OUR 58TH MERDEKA DAY LOOMING JUST AROUND THE CORNER, WE HEAR FROM NARMI AND PREMA YIN ON WHAT MAKES MALAYSIA TRULY A PLACE THEY CALL HOME. CP: How would you best describe Malaysia?

Prema Yin: “Yeah there are more

Prema Yin: “Malaysia is very

Narmi: “Exactly. Back then, we’d play underground shows in the city where the venues are really dodgy. There are also a lot more radio stations today on which local musicians can be heard. In terms of music distribution and publishing... it’s getting better. Local musicians are being better taken care of these days.”

multicultural, with a lot of different cultures and ethnicities. I find that very interesting and exotic because not many places in the world have that. As a whole, we’re Malaysians but we’re all from different walks of life, with different backgrounds and different cultures. I realised this when I told tourists or international friends about Malaysia... they never fail to find this very interesting. Often, they’re just like... oh you all speak different languages and dialects but you’re all from one country! The fact that Malaysians understand each other despite language barriers, you know, is something that makes home a special place.”

Narmi: “It depends on who I’m talking to – if it were backpackers, I’d tell them to go island-hopping because not only are Malaysians beautiful people but our islands are beautiful too. I’d definitely tell them to go to East Malaysia, to explore the beaches there. I’m a beach person!” What makes you proud to be Malaysian? Prema Yin: “I know a lot of people

tend to overlook this but I’m really proud of the way we speak, you know. Our creole when we speak. It’s our own unique way of speaking English. They call it ‘Manglish’ and I think it’s cool. When tourists hear us Malaysians talk to each other, they’re wonder... are they speaking English or...what? Because we speak so fast but we get one another. And of course, our local cuisine. Our food here is so good, nothing else can compare. I’ve travelled quite a bit and Malaysian food is still the best.”

Narmi: “Hmm. For a start, as

Malaysians, we are warm and polite people. But you know what? I’m really proud of our Malaysian music scene because we’re growing. It’s growing so well, it’s progressing the way it’s supposed to progress. When I first started out, there was hardly any English music being played in the Malaysian music industry. But now, there are so many avenues like open mic sessions where people can play gigs.”

outlets now for people to perform!”

We totally agree with those sentiments! How about the top things that you’d definitely bring your international friends to see, eat, or do in Malaysia? Narmi: “To eat in Malaysia? Penang!” Prema Yin: “There’s also Malacca for food. And definitely islandhopping, and shopping. Even if they’re guys, shopping. You can never go wrong with shopping (laughs). And I’d definitely introduce them to our club scene.”

Narmi: “I’d also show them around Terengganu or Cherating. There’s this firefly thing in Terengganu where you go on this river and the guide would call out to the fireflies – then they come and ‘dance’ around you.” Prema Yin: “Let’s not forget our Rainforest Music Festival. That can’t be missed!” Is there a Malaysian moment in history that has been the best moment ever for you? Prema Yin: “I know this one! It

has to be when the Malaysian field hockey team won against India. I was really, really young... I was 12 years old and my brothers (Keevan Raj and Logan Raj) were playing. It was so amazing because people in the stadium started singing, ‘We Are The Champions’ and I was a part of that whole moment. I didn’t even know the words to the song but I was singing along! That definitely has to be my awesome, historical Malaysian moment.”

Narmi: “My personal proudest Malaysian moment was when One Buck Short became a major part of the first Rockaway Festival. It was historical for me.” Okay, now, let’s dig deep for a bit. What do you hope for the future of young Malaysians? Prema Yin: “I would say, just allow

yourself to explore things and be creative. Don’t limit yourself because there are so many ways to learn so many things via various mediums these days what with the Internet and social media platforms. Get out there, educate yourself, and improve yourself. If it’s music you’re interested

respecting and loving one another.”

Narmi: “From what I’ve seen, I like where these young Malaysians are going because the education system is better. The younger Malaysians are also more open these days and thus, are more supportive of the events that are happening around them. As long as they keep on this path that they’re on, great things are in the pipeline for the local music scene. I also hope that young Malaysians continue to grow and develop.”

Narmi: “I really want to see 1Malaysia happen – real unity.”

And if you were given one Merdeka wish, what would you wish for?

Narmi: “One of my songs! (laughs). Just kidding. Maybe ‘Rasa Sayang’. Or our national anthem – the proper way to sing it.”

Prema Yin: “I want love between Malaysians, you know, people

If you could teach young Malaysians to sing, which song would you choose? Prema Yin: “Michael Jackson’s

‘Man in The Mirror’, because before any changes can be made, it has to begin with yourself.”

Aren’t they the cutest! Narmi and Prema Yin are also working on a song together for Prema Yin’s new album which will be released in a couple of weeks. So be sure to keep a look out for it! How to.. Part 2 WORD JEYNA LIM PIX KH

B-boy Basics B-boying started in New York during the early 1970s. Today, we commonly refer to it as breakdancing. But did you know, b-boying and breaking are really the preferred terms by the dancers? The term breakdancing is looked down upon in the hip-hop culture. So the next time someone says breakdancing, you can say with swag that that’s not the right term. Those who practice breaking are called b-boys, b-girls or breakers. These practitioners dance to hip-hop music with a wide variety of dance moves. If you are wondering what moves these are, you’re in luck. Here’s how you can do them, and well!

1. Headstand

Unlike the gymnasts’ headstand, a b-boy’s headstand differs in purpose. Headstands are a stance to enter a headspin and windmill. A basic headstand is important in order to perform all the other moves, and it requires lots of practice with help from a professional dancer.

2. Top Rock

A top rock is a 2-step move that is repeated continuously. It is usually performed as an opening, and serves as a warm-up and transition between moves. Each dancer has his own style infused in the general top rock, and it is his proud signature.

3. Chair Freeze

Chair Freeze is one of many freezes. It requires a b-boy to lie arched to the floor with the arm stabbed to the back for support. The Chair Freeze itself has different variations such as the Airchair, Elbow Airchair, and Double Airchair.

If you have a secret dream of becoming a breaker, you can learn all these moves at the Royal Phantom Dance Studio. They open every Monday to Saturday from 4pm to 11pm. For more info on classes and fees, visit www. facebook.com/RPDanceStudio.

Getting through

that first Attend the orientation More often than not, “freshies” tend to opt out of the orientation day. Reason? They’d rather be somewhere else than sit through lengthy speeches from the principal and various lecturers or professors. They forget that orientation day is the perfect time to familiarise themselves with the campus and to get everything else they need before the first day. We are talking ID card, library card, campus guide, and such. Besides, who wants to spend their first day lost in an unfamiliar territory, right?

day

blues

The first day of college is approaching fast and – regardless of age or gender – it’s always nervewracking. New syllabus, challenging subjects, unfamiliar territory, and unknown faces aside, this institution is where you’re going to have to spend the next few years of your life. Here are some ways you can ease into it:

Get to know your lecturer/professor If we had it our way, we wouldn’t need to study another day in our lives. The reality is, you’re going to have to get through this last education hurdle whether you like it or not. So, get to know your lecturer/ professor and maintain a good student-teacher relationship with him/her. They can either turn out to be the people who’ll vouch for you when you need their help or your harshest critic. Simply put, they’ll be the ones to help you make the most out of your time spent in campus. Best you start off on the right foot!

Drop the shyness

Note your seniors

Sure, your old group of friends in high school might’ve all gone their separate ways but that doesn’t mean that you can’t make new ones. Start with initiating small conversations to find a common ground like asking your new classmates which classes they’re taking, what extracurricular activities they’re planning to sign up for, or what high schools they were from. If you start warming up to people, life in campus will become friendlier sooner (read, more comfortable) than you think.

In every course and with every college syllabus, there are people who were there before you. We’re talking about the seniors. It’s always good to get to know who they are because you might need their experience and input when it comes to assignments and examinations. Every bit of information is important including ways out of tough situations that they might’ve been in before. Really, who better to rescue you in times of distress than your seniors?

K-Pop ALBUM REVIEWS

K-POP CHART

After School Maxi Single Album XOXO Vol. 6 EXO After School Many a time, K-Pop idol girl group After School has escaped with extremely high levels of sexuality. Tastefully done high levels of sexuality, that is. If you’ve seen the group’s comeback music video, “First Love”, an R&B tempo song with ligament-injury-inducing choreography, you’d know exactly what we’re talking about. The rest of the album is done with the help of super producer Brave Brothers, known for his polished and fresh sounds. Teamed with After School’s vocal performance, and it’s beautiful!

After an entire year, SM Entertainment’s super K-Pop idol boy group EXO finally releases its first album. This is, of course, after countless live and recorded performances of EXO’s hit song, “MAMA” and after endlessly keeping fans on the edge of their seats with teasers. So what better way to debut its new album than to pick “Wolf” as the lead single? Of course, the “XOXO” album then slows down with “Baby Don’t Cry”, an almost whispery song that’s as graceful as you would expect from EXO. As for the rest of the songs off “XOXO”, let’s just say that it’s far from disastrous for a debut album.

Give It To Me SISTAR

When we heard that a “new male K-Pop solo artiste” was about to break in to the K-Pop music bubble, our minds raced to figure out who it could be. To our surprise (and delight), the solo artiste was none other than Henry Lau of Super Junior-M. Not a bad choice, for he can sing, dance, play instruments, and above all, carry off the image of innocence with his baby face. The naturally gifted boy continues to please with “Trap”, an album that offers six straightforward, easy-to-love songs. Fans, this is only the beginning of greater things to come for Henry.

Amid all the comeback albums that were released, we were most looking forward to this. Starship Entertainment’s K-Pop idol girl group, SISTAR, has had a lot going for it since it first emerged with the stellar song, “Ma Boy”. It was without hesitation that we picked up a copy of “Give It To Me” the moment it was out! Evidently, the girls gave their all for this album, which doesn’t stray far from their original catchy musical style. Their fans have been “hungry” for so long that they’re bound to lap 10 songs up immediately – we know we did.

You may know Morton as the keyboard player for Maroon Five or even a preacher’s kid that received his musical and moral grounding from the church and his father but the album New Orleans is toed towards being mainstream and he is doing it with poised along with his friendly, down-to-earth personality, lack of artifice and persistently positive mix of R&B, rock, and pop. However, the music may sound clean but it does falls rather short in terms of songwriting and depth but tracks such as ‘Only One’ featuring legendary Stevie Wonder accompanied Morton with a brief harmonica solo and ‘Heavy’ featuring Maroon 5 high pitch, frontman Adam Levine adds that little zest on to Morton’s middling R&B album. Morton is an artist who is still learning with a talent to evolve into something interesting on the soul music landscape.

The former Disney star and American singer-songwriter Demi Lovato is back with her fourth album self-titled, “Demi”, which represents her making music her own way and having fun while doing so. It’s a very personal album as she wrote a whopping total of nine songs on the album, all of which expresses how she’s no longer focusing on being down and has overcome her past. The first single, “Heart Attack” is easily one of the best overall as

she shines through the lyrics that resonate with a depth that matches her emotional level. Pieces such as “Nightingale”, “Warrior”, and “In Case” are enchanting, accompanied by piano keys and strings, making these ballads sound just a little more epic. Although this album may come off as rather predictable what with all the sassy and lovelorn songs, Demi Lovato still manages to capture our hearts with her voice throughout the entire album.

This Icelandic six-piece folk band pulled off a neat trick by making a whimsical album from start to finish with lyrics about forest, talking trees, animals, and making them sounds tough. The songs are easy to listen with switching breathy vocals that compliments each other from the two co-singers: Nanna Hilmarsdottir and ‘Raggi’ Porhallsson which is highly noticed in the opening song ‘Dirty Paws’. ‘Little Talks’ is another track that we are hooked for it being full of life and love, it’s so simple and uniformly happy in a way that isn’t annoying with a cool mixture of folk, acoustic singer, indie, and rock. My Head is an Animal deserves the attention of the public because it’s a well-crafted, spirited debut album with soaring choruses and delicious harmonies.

MOMENTUM Jamie Cullum

RANDOM ACCESS MEMORIES Daft Punk

If you are new to Jamie Cullum, this UK jazz-retro singer-songwriter seems to be moving towards a distinctive pop style with “Momentum”, making it a little more commercial and radio-friendly with piercing electric organ and electric piano lending a vibrant edge. Kicking things off with a tapping garage-can drum beat is the album opener, “The Same Things”. We say it’s a great choice for an introduction to “Momentum” as “The Same Things” definitely lifted and brought up the energy level of the album. Also, keep your ears peeled for our favourite, “When I Get Famous”! It’s super cheeky with its infectious chorus and melodramatic intro. “Momentum” is a work of art packed with sultry melodies and a perfect balance of jazz and pop. Definitely an album to pick up this summer! WORDS JQ LEE

Three albums later, one would think that leading dance music producers Daft Punk would stick to making music of the same style. But with the release of its fourth studio album, “Random Access Memories”, it seems the glory days of the legendary Daft Punk are over. Instead, the band is offering funk that’s radio-friendly. All 13 tracks on the album show us that disco is super fashionable again, coupled with some pretty interesting collaborations. If you love the element of surprise, pick up a copy from your nearest music store today. WORDS LAINEY

The Blessed Unrest Sara Bareilles

ICE ON THE DUNE Empire of the Sun

This 33-year-old takes a step out of her comfort zone with her fourth studio album filled with sparkling piano-pop music on steroids. There’s a sweet way Bareilles sings about her breakup and getting over love on this 12-track set. Her voice is still solid accompanied with strong passionate lyrics can be heard in ‘Hercules’ and ‘1000 Times’. The true triumph comes with the elegant and heart wrenching ballad ‘Manhattan’ where bare emotion put forth in this song will sure to make radio hit. There’s a little something for everyone in this album, from depressingly sad to upbeat and inspiring. For her crafty skills in lyrics, this album is killer. WORDS JQ LEE

Put on your dancing shoes because Empire of the Sun’s new album is going to make you move. The Australian electronic duo recently released “Ice on the Dune”, an album filled with irritatingly catchy pop tracks with dance elements thrown into the mix. We hear that“Ice on the Dune” comes with a backstory involving “four priests with the spirit of wild animals and the theft of a magical jewel by the King of Shadows”. Not sure what that means but you can imagine the euphoric, slightly surreal concept Empire of the Sun is going for with this album. Electronic dance music has never sounded more approachable. The magic of Spell S S tepping into the home/studio of modern pop band Spell S is like stepping through multiple eras of music simultaneously. The walls are lined with vintage vinyl records and its sleeve covers, another had a row of box guitars, and a treasure trove of vintage memorabilia littered the apartment unit while a station of sophisticated recording equipment occupies another corner of their little studio. In their own words, they define their music as a mish-mash of various genres including electro, alternative rock, pop, and some elements of classical music. The band members are students of Akademi Seni Budaya & Warisan Kebangsaan (ASWARA) or Academy of Cultural Arts and National Heritage. Spell S guitarist and frontman Alif said he first met violinist Izziwan, bassist Adam, and percussionist Azlan in 2010 during their studies at ASWARA. Not long after that they met Iqa, their current vocalist, when they became sessionists during her participation in the local singing competition reality show, Mentor. Although Iqa is the main vocalist, the guys occasionally do backup vocals as well.

“It was the chemistry we had that made us form a band. I think chemistry is important for any band to have in order to succeed,” Iqa said during the interview.

“Chemistry is important for any band to have in order to succeed”

Up to now, the band has been playing for corporate functions and private parties. They do, however, have big plans ahead. They seek to achieve the ultimate band dream: international fame. But like all ambitious goals, it takes one step at a time to get there. Also, having classes and exams at the same time

does not make it easy for them to fully focus on landing gigs. “Sometimes when we have a project due for finals and a gig close to the same date, we could incorporate the project into the gig. So we basically kill two birds with one stone,” Alif said when asked how the band manages their busy schedules. Their band manager Lorena also arranges gigs for them to perform. Spell S says a band should have good self management, maintain its image, and find some chemistry with each other to be successful in the long run. The band even gave a live demo after the interview. he story features a large cast with multiple, interlocking plots. Set in a provincial life study, the storyline’s main concern is a parish council election in a pretty little town in England called Pagford. It’s described as a jewel with everything you can expect from a little idyllic town but life is marred by a vicious political battle that plans to redraw the municipal boundaries for a housing project called “the Fields”. Barry Fairbrother, a man who has grown up in “the

Fields” opposes the faction that wants to foist “the Fields” onto a neighbouring city. Conveniently, he is found dead in the car park of a gold club, and leaves behind an empty seat. People start vying for Barry’s seat, opening what seems like a Pandora’s Box of characters – from nasty wives, abusive fathers, and suicidal teenagers, to adulterous spouses and addicts. Every character comes with a distinctive label. Rowling’s move to writing for adults is crammed with adventures of a different kind. Forget flying mythical

creatures or cars, and forget magic. Instead, expect a lot of emotion, heart, and Rowling’s trademark style of twining many plots around detailed characters. On top of that, if you pay close enough attention to what’s being said between the lines, you’d realise that The Casual Vacancy is filled to the brim with impactful social messages. It’s also fascinating to discover that she reportedly drew on her own mildly unhappy childhood for this story. Worth the picking up and reading? Well, why not?

After Vi goes on television to share a premonition that another, more devastating earthquake will soon hit the St. Louis area, Kate is mortified. Equally troubling, however, is her fear that Vi may be right. As the date of the predicted earthquake quickly approaches, Kate is forced to reconcile her fraught relationship with her sister and to face truths about herself she’s long tried to deny.

TOKYO KITCHEN TREATS WORDS & PIX SHAH

Place

For a place called Tokyo Kitchen, it doesn’t exactly give off a Tokyo vibe. The Japanese capital city is always depicted as a modern, neon-lit, techno-metropolis. The restaurant however, is adorned with traditional décor such as hanging paper lanterns and little wooden prayer tablets that make up the front wall of the place. Interestingly enough, you can write on a blank tablet to leave your mark there. The restaurant’s interior is no different. It looks more of a cosy Japanese house with a wooden floor instead of a sterile city environment. Traditional Japanese curios and artwork graces the walls. However, the cosy environment does make for a comfortable dining experience, which most restaurants work to achieve anyway.

Verdict

Tokyo Kitchen does pretty well to keep its selection of sushi interesting. It works on already existing recipes and make more out of it instead of taking the hit-and-miss path of creating new types of the Japanese delicacy.

Food

The highlight of Tokyo Kitchen’s menu is the Dinosaur Sushi. But you won’t be munching on a T-Rex. What it’s referring to is the size of this sushi that is more or less the size of your hand. At first glance, it may look like a normal smoked salmon sushi. But the dish cleverly disguises a filling of cucumber shreds and crabmeat. The signature dish is the Tokyo Kitchen Special Roll which is a Maki (rolled sushi) made up of fried tiger prawn, unagi, cucumber, shrimp roe, and topped off with a slice of mango and peanut sauce.

Tokyo Kitchen serves up more than the usual fare of sushi, mixing unusual combos (one particular sushi had a slice of mango and peanut sauce on top) to give a unique flair to its menu. It’s chef (a Malaysian!) visits Japan periodically to keep up with new sushi recipes and search for new creative designs. He then incorporates his own twist into his creations.

Even the normal sushi has a small twist to it. Take, for example, the salmon sushi. One variation is basically a salmon sushi with an extra-long slice of salmon draped over the rice. Another oddball in the menu would be the Jelly Sushi. This one is also your run-ofthe-mill sushi but with Japanese jelly (which tastes like vinegar by the way) on top. There’s also one topped with peanut sauce and spring onions.

Arigato Gozaimas!

Fun Fact: The original type of sushi (nare-zushi) originated in Southeast

Asia, possibly near the Mekong River. It then spread to Southern China before it was introduced in Japan.

T

he journey is a 6-hour drive from the city of Kuala Lumpur to Kuala Besut, Terengganu. First, you’d have to exit Kuala Lumpur through the Gombak toll which costs RM5, and then pass through the Bentong toll that costs RM3 and finally the main east coast highway (LPT), which costs RM18 through the Jabor road. There is a boat shuttle from the Kuala Besut Jetty to Pulau Perhentian and you can park your car at the jetty for RM8 per day. There is an RM5 Government tax fee for the coral reef protection and RM70 for a return ticket to Pulau Perhentian Kecil. If you’re wondering which of the many beaches on Perhentian is the best, Long Beach would be the first recommendation since it’s the liveliest spot on the island. As you get closer to the island, the greenish murky water from the bay will slowly turn clearer. The most popular chalet on Long Beach is Bubu Long Beach Resort. The cheapest room costs about RM360 per night during the low season and can go up to RM470 during peak season. Keep in mind that even necessities can be very pricey on the island. For example, a plate of ‘nasi goreng’ costs around RM13 and a glass of ‘teh o ais’ could come around at RM6, the typical dinner of a KL-ite that would normally cost more or less RM5.

take a plunge into the clear turquoise waters and do some free diving if you are bold enough to brave the deep ocean without any life jacket or mask. A little-known fact when island hopping or on a snorkelling trip around Perhentian is that (if everyone on the boat agrees) you could ask the boat driver to take you to what the locals call ‘The Lighthouse’ which, in fact is not a lighthouse at all. It’s actually an abandoned communications tower about 5 to 6 stories high in the middle of the ocean and a favourite diving spot! It can be scaled at different levels if you don’t feel brave enough to jump off the highest point and the waters are deep enough so it’s safe enough to take that leap of faith from the top of the tower. When the trip is over, it may bum you out but there are several more islands off the Malaysian east coast that is worth a visit. Check out Pulau Kapas, Pulau Redang, and Pulau Lang Tengah before you go off half-way across the world to find paradise islands.

Visiting Pulau Perhentian Kecil warrants an obligatory snorkelling trip. It would be a waste to go to such a beautiful island with crystal clear waters and not get wet. Just ask the chalet you are staying at about water activities and they will point you in the right direction. A noontime snorkelling trip which leaves at about 12pm would cost somewhere along RM50 for a 6 point snorkelling trip. Those points include areas of the ocean where you can watch sea turtles, fishes and corals. Between points, you will be taken to Kampung Nelayan for lunch. The place offers a larger variety of food compared to the chalet areas. The snorkelling trip ends at Turtle Bay where astounding corals reside in large formation on the ocean floor. Anorexia Nervosa WORDS JEYNA LIM

We have all heard of the word "anorexia" and we roughly know what it means. But anorexia nervosa is more than just an eating problem; it 's a serious and complex eating disorder that can be life threatening.

A

norexia nervosa affects both genders but women are more prone towards the disorder. The desire to lose weight is taken to the extreme where the victims will only take in small quantities of food, while some completely starve themselves. Most sufferers tend to deny having this eating disorder and, because this disorder is also psychologically related, denial is no surprise. Fortunately, this disorder can be cured! But before any action can be taken, you have to be able to tell the signs. Some of these are: • Dieting, even though one is already thin. • Obsessed with calories and constantly reading food labels. • Lying about not eating by making excuses or throwing away food. • Refusing to eat in public places and eating in a ritualistic ways. • Sudden and dramatic weight loss. • Constantly feeling fat even though one is underweight. • Obsessed with weight and overly concerned about even the tiniest weight gain. • Critical and harsh with one’s own appearance.

• Always denying being too thin. • Consuming diet pills, laxatives, or diuretics. • Disappearing after meals to throw up. • Compulsive exercising to burn calories, even when unwell.

How much does anorexia nervosa affect your body? • Severe mood swings, irritability, poor memory, and an inability to think right. • Lack of energy, low blood pressure, and possible heart failure. • Dry and yellowish skin, brittle nails, with easily bruised skin. • Constipation, bloating, kidney stones and possible kidney failure. • Weak muscles, fractures, swollen joints and osteoporosis. • Tooth decay and gum damage. • Dizziness, fainting, and headaches. • Thinning hair, brittle hair, and fine hair growth all over the body and face. If you know someone who might be suffering from anorexia nervosa, don’t act like the food police. Avoid threats when trying to help your friend. Seek professional advice and be a role model by taking care of your own body. Do keep encouraging your friend to seek help, even if he or she is in denial.

Random Facts Anorexia versus Anorexia Nervosa Anorexia is a medical term for lack of appetite. People who are suffering with anorexia nervosa do not have a lack of appetite. Anorexia Nervosa versus Bulimia Nervosa A critical difference is that anorexia nervosa is partly caused by personality; people who are perfectionist and have obsessive compulsive tendencies. Bulimia nervosa, however, is more of a selfperceived image. Those who are suffering with anorexia nervosa will also be driven to go on diets in order to attain some form of control in their lives. It is common for them to exhibit bulimia nervosa symptoms such as binging and purging.

Andy Murray, The History-Maker I

t started with a game witnessed by 15,000 spectators on Centre Court. The dazzling London sun set the searing temperatures of up to 40C but that was perhaps the least of Murray’s problems. See, the home-grown champion had the weight of the world on his shoulders – it was a make it or break it play for the player. As Murray and his Serbian rival, Novak Djokovic, battled it out, the 26-year-old Scot aced the final moments of the tense three hours and 10 minutes of the game with a series of straight sets. He then

For 77 long years, Britain has been deprived of a Wimbledon Championship men’s champion. On July 7, 2013, Scot player Andy Murray took it upon himself to bring the gold, or rather, the cup, home after a hard-fought victory.

claimed his hard-fought victory over the world number one player. The newly crowned champion was greeted by cheers from the wild Centre Court crowd, as well as pubs, clubs, and homes across the land. Millions around the world celebrated the tennis history that Murray had just created. The tennis player was seen sinking to his knees in what looked like utter and sheer joy before racing to where his family were seated, all of whom witnessed him becoming a new legend.

After the game, he tweeted to his legion of fans, “Can’t believe what just happened!”. In a BBC TV interview with Sue Barker, he said, “It was tough speaking after the match. There are a lot of people who have worked with me over the last 10 or 15 years or so. I didn’t know what to do with myself. The noise levels during the whole match were just incredible.” To top that off, the champ also scooped up £1.6million in prize money but is now expected to net a further fortune in future sponsorship deals worth up to a possible £100million.

The 2013/14 English Premier League Predictions

We’re just a matter of weeks away from the next season of one of the most highly anticipated sports in the world. Yes, it’s the English Premier League (EPL) season, which kicks off on August 17, 2013. After so much transfer activity and manager replacements, it’s evident that the latest EPL is all set to be one of the most exciting in recent years. With so much hype built around the 2013/14 EPL campaign, let’s take a look at the predictions of the teams which could finish inside the top six:

6. Arsenal

Arsene Wenger’s side lacks depth in the back four, and many feel players such as Per Mertesacker aren’t quick enough for the pace of the Premier League. If Arsenal doesn’t spend in January, they can’t be finishing any higher than sixth place - but luckily, if rumours are true, players like Steven Jovetic and Gonzalo Higuain could be joining this summer.

5. Liverpool

Liverpool have done some good business this summer so far; with signings such as Iago Aspas, KoloToure and Simon Mignolet, they’ll look like the team to beat next season. Brendan Rodgers had his Liverpool side playing some brilliant football towards the end of the season, with their attacking fluidity going forward and the creativity of new signing Coutinho, who proved to be a vital cog in the Merseyside outfit. They could well be within a shout of a Champions League finish this season.

4. Manchester City

With new manager Manuel Pellegrini taking up the reins at the Etihad Stadium, this season seems to be a time to rebuild the squad. The additions of Jesus Navas and Fernandinho will give the squad a boost, but losing quality players like Carlos Tevez and Mario Balotelli will call for a rebuild. Rumours also still persist about players like Edin Dzeko, Aleksandar Kolarov and Joleon Lescott leaving. So it’ll be interesting to see who’ll still be in the blue half of Manchester when the new season kicks off.

3. Tottenham

This will be, by far, the most controversial decision, but if Tottenham sign the calibre of players they are being linked with, they can’t be getting anything less than third place. Andre Villas-Boas’s side will be a force to be reckoned with, but only if they keep hold of key player Gareth Bale. With Brazilian midfielder Paulinho set to sign, and players such as Leandro Damiao possibly arriving, there’ll be exciting times ahead for Tottenham fans.

2.Manchester United

The arrival of David Moyes will boost Manchester United with a manager with Premier League experience. He did a great job with Everton, introducing some great players to the Premier League on a shoestring budget. On the other hand, this title race could go right down to the wire, but Manchester United might narrowly miss out to a manager with experience in winning trophies.

1. Chelsea

Chelsea would arguably look the most stable for a Premier League title this season. The selfproclaimed Special One returning to Stamford Bridge, it could prove to be a wise to decision to bring him back to English Football. The Portuguese manager has already won the Premier League title twice with Chelsea before, and the Blues have got a head start in the transfer market by signing Andre Schurrle and Marco van Ginkel. This could prove to be a successful season ahead for Chelsea Football Club. CAMPUS PLUS

Daredevil Drifter

Malaysian drifter Ariff Johanis is no stranger when it comes to anything on wheels. He also proves the adage “practice makes perfect will bring you to greater heights.

A

riff is a Malaysian drift racer who has won trophies since 2005 at both local as well as international competitions.

His interest in racing came at an early age, from toy cars and roller skating as a kid, bicycles and skateboarding as a teenager, and eventually motorsports as an adult.

racing techniques. Whoever it is who said video games are bad for you obviously have no idea what they are talking about.

In his teenage years, he competed in bicycle races and was also active at skateboarding which, he admitted, taught him many things about discipline, and that consistent practice will get you far.

At the age of 24, he had already graduated with a double major in fine arts and business administration and did not get into motorsports until he was 28.

Apparently, video games also helped him with

Ariff began drag racing at the BatuTiga Speedway Circuit (BTSC) in Shah Alam using

a Mazda B8, before he immersed himself in the world of drifting at age 33. Now, he is wielding a Nissan Sylvia S13 as his official drifting car. “While drag racing is a more accessible form of motorsports, drifting requires a very particular skill. “I’m not saying only people with gifted driving skills are able to drift. It’s something you can learn

but difficult to master. Anyone can do it but one must put in an enormous amount of dedication to practice and hone the skills required to pull it off,” Ariff said during an exclusive interview with Campus Plus. Even though Ariff teaches advanced driving, he points out the challenge of getting into the world of motorsports is the lack of guidance. There simply isn’t enough to learn from other

than people like Ariff who are already veterans on the race track. “At the end of the day, it’s education that will get you to where you want to be. Finish your studies first and after that, the world is your oyster. You won’t regret taking this advice,” he said when asked if he had anything to say to readers. Ways To Ace Your Internship Be resourceful, always

Sure, your superior might’ve said, “If you need anything, just ask!” but by that, he or she didn’t mean that you should flag them for every single little issue. Manage “speed bumps” on your own the best way you know how. Ask for help only when you really need to. You’re there to learn after all.

Be open to criticism

During your internship, you’ll receive some criticism so you best prepare yourself to having your views and decisions challenged. Of course, this goes both ways. Don’t be afraid to ask questions and respectfully challenge views too.

74

CAMPUS PLUS

Be passionate

Take ownership of what you do and work as though this is your first job and not just an internship. Always see yourself as an employee.

Be a team player

Being in a “team” means you helping other members as much as they help you, if not more. Reach out to different members of your team althoughthey’ve probably had far more experience in the field than you’ve had. Again, it’s a good opportunity to learn with and from them.

Be ambitious

There’s no better way to show your immediate superior that you’re taking your job seriously than to attack problems head-on. If you need to get your hands dirty, do it, and do it with confidence. Take on as many problem-solving tasks as you can and remember, you get out of it what you put into it.
