LOOKING BACK

TO THE PAST...

Alpharetta History written by Pat Miller Milton History - written by Robert Meyers

ALPHARETTA AND MILTON’S HISTORY! ALPHARETTA HISTORY The area now known as Alpharetta was once Cherokee Indian Territory. When gold was discovered in 1828, in nearby Dahlonega, whites began moving into the Cherokee Nation in ever-increasing numbers. Finally in 1838, the last of the Cherokees were removed from their homeland in Georgia to a reservation in Oklahoma. Along the way, more than 4,000 Cherokees died on what became known as the Trail of Tears. The former Cherokee land was eventually divided into 12 counties, the last of which was Milton County. Milton was established by the legislature in 1858, and the new town of Alpharetta was created to serve as its county seat. Just three years later, the Civil War began. At the Georgia Secession Convention in 1861, Milton and many of its neighboring counties voted to remain in the Union, but the wealthier

more populous counties along the coast carried the secession vote. While no major battles were fought in Milton County, Union Army foragers stripped the local farms of their crops and livestock. Soldiers returning home from the war, found their family farms and businesses decimated. Schools were closed because the county could no longer afford to fund them. Many area children received much of their education at home or at church-run schools. Gradually the local economy began to improve. In 1921, Milton High School opened in Alpharetta to serve students in grades one through 11. Because Milton was the only high school in the county, and few area students could afford to go to college, most young people married their high-school sweethearts. Alpharetta became the kind of community where everyone

knew everyone else, and most folks were related to one another. By the late 1920s, Milton County was again in financial trouble. The combined effects of the Great Depression and the boll weevil had bankrupt the county. Its citizens voted to dissolve the county and merge with Fulton County. On January 1, 1932, Milton County ceased to exist, and Alpharetta lost its status as a county seat. Prior to the merger, Milton County was actually larger than Fulton. In addition to Alpharetta, Milton County included all of the land that became the modern-day cities of Johns Creek and Milton, most of present-day Roswell, the northern portion of Sandy Springs, and the Fulton County portion of Mountain Park. During World War II, the federal government encouraged local cotton

H I STO R Y O F M I LTO N G EO R G I A The city of Milton, Georgia, was officially Incorporated on December 1, 2006, following a referendum approved by 85 percent of local voters. This historic event capped an exciting but little-known history of an area once populated by Indian tribes and farmer settlers. Milton occupies 38.5 square miles of formerly unincorporated Fulton County. Joe Lockwood was elected mayor of the new city and has been re-elected three times. As of 2020 Milton’s population is estimated to be approximately 40,000.

Prior to the arrival of European settlers, the area was occupied primarily by Creek Indian tribes who were subsequently

dominated by the Cherokee Indians. The area that was to become Milton County was within the confines of the Cherokee Nation. At its height it comprised about 120,000 square miles from the Appalachian Mountains to the Mississippi River. Cherokee society was very sophisticated. Traditionally based on a confederation of local villages, the Cherokee Nation created a centralized government in 1827 with a written constitution, bicameral legislature, a newspaper and other European-like institutions. The Georgia legislature created Cherokee County with 6,900 square miles of territory from land ceded to the state by the Cherokees in 1831.

farmers to switch to raising chickens, which could be fed to the soldiers. More and more local citizens began commuting to manufacturing jobs in nearby cities. The Lockheed Plant in Marietta and the General Motors Assembly Plant in Doraville were among the area’s major employers. Throughout the 1950s and ‘60s, Alpharetta remained a small town, but that all changed with the opening of GA400 in the 1970s. Alpharetta quickly evolved from a small town into a thriving city. Today its population is approaching 70,000, and it is home to more than 700 high-tech businesses. As of July 2020, the median home price in Alpharetta was $459,000. Upscale home buyers are attracted to the area by its highly rated public schools, excellent shopping, delicious restaurants, and plentiful parks and recreation venues. In 2014, Alpharetta opened its new City Hall, and over the next several years the mixed-use Alpharetta City Center was developed adjacent to it. The Alpha Loop, a bike and hiking trail, surrounds the revitalized downtown area and connects to the Big Creek Greenway. When the Loop is completed, Alpharetta residents will be able to bike from City Hall all the way to the Chattahoochee River. All in all, Alpharetta is an awesome place to live, work, shop, and play. 2021

LOCAL > HISTORY > CONTINUED The rapid increase in European settlers in the 18th century gradually led to friction between the settlers and Cherokees. In the 1820s, Georgia began efforts to remove the Cherokees from the state. Beginning In 1832, following passage of the Indian Removal Act by the U.S. Congress, Georgia claimed jurisdiction over the Cherokee homeland and offered Cherokee lands to white Georgians via lottery including the land that was to become Milton County. The Milton Historical Society possesses several original land lot deeds from the 1932 lottery. In 1838, Cherokees remaining in the area were rounded up and marched to Oklahoma in what became known as the Trail of Tears.

In 1911, John B. Broadwell and his family took his famous "double-jointed" cotton to the fair. Broadwell invented several strains of cotton and sold some himself from his wagon. His double-jointed cotton produced three bales on one acre. (Photo courtesy Georgia Magazine)

Milton County was officially created in 1857 from portions of several surrounding counties to reduce the distance residents had to travel to do business with the government. Alpharetta was designated to be the county seat. The county was named after John Milton, a Revolutionary War hero and Georgia’s first secretary of state. The Civil War (1861-1865) had a major effect on Milton County. At least three Milton County infantry companies were created during the war, and the county suffered some 250 casualties. With large farm families as the norm and a population of only 4,000, the war had a lasting impact on family life and the economy.

The James brickyard opened in the late 1800s and was still in operation in the 1920s. Local sawmills were also vitally important to the development of Milton's early agricultural infrastructure. Milton County was an agricultural area with cotton as its principal crop. However, boll-weevil infestations, droughts and the Great Depression destroyed its one-crop economy. In 1932, a nearly destitute Milton County with its population of 6,700, was merged into Fulton County bringing to the area paved roads, bridges, schools and increased economic opportunity. The area continued to grow and prosper in the 20th century. Today the City of Milton is recognized as one of the state’s premier cities, noted for its excellent schools and blend of urban and rural way of life. It has consistently been ranked as one of the safest and best places to live in the state of Georgia.

From 1902 until 1905, the Fields Crossroads Post Office was located inside the store with Haygood serving as Postmaster. The building changed hands several times after the 1930s and was last used to raise chickens in the 1960s. Today, the remains of the building are still standing, down but not out. Union Hill's outside bar

THE UNION 14275 Providence Rd., Milton, GA 30004 770-569-7767 ›› www.theunionrestaurant.com With a fun outside bar, in the heart of Milton, you will find The Union on a roundabout, in what used to be the outskirts of town, out there with the horse farms. Now The Union is a great meeting place! It is still out there with the horse farms, which makes it even a sweeter place to go hang out. Are you needing comfort food, but with a little spin on it, or maybe some Japaneseinfluenced ahi poke, could you be in the mood for a wood-oven pizza … you’ll want to put this on your list of “have to go to” places!

SANDY HOFMANN LOVING THE LOFTS AND... STROLLING THE STREET OF ALPHARETTA!

Written by resident Sandra Hofmann

So many thoughts cascade through my mind when asked about life in Alpharetta! I’ll tell you how I got here later, but first – life in awesome Alpharetta! I live in the very first mixeduse mid-rise condominium in the city – Alpharetta Lofts on Canton Street at School Drive in the Garden Arts District. This owner-occupied building has 33 single-level lofts surrounding a beautiful open atrium. From my balconies I look out over treetops, can catch the sunrise each day, and listen to sounds of a splashing fountain at Teasley Place below. Everything that Downtown Alpharetta offers is steps away – pedestrian-friendly sidewalks, pocket parks, public art, restaurants, bakeries, wine, boutique shops, Alpha-Loop, City Hall with the Alpharetta Old Milton County Historical Museum, the Arts Center, the Future Farmers of America Log Cabin, and Resthaven Cemetery, just to name my favorites!

24 BeLocal

Pre-pandemic there were street festivals – art, crafts, food, and entertainment – lots of opportunities to enjoy urban life. Even now the sounds of music and laughter can be heard and walking though the neighborhood brings joy. There is vibrancy below the canopies of trees and a sense of living in a small town where history is treasured and the future planned. A typical day in Downtown Alpharetta finds me walking my two Yorkshire terriers

(Nicky and Gracie) and greeting all their fur friends along the way. You could set the clock by our encounters with neighbors doing the same! The coffee aromas are wafting out of the Nest Café as I walk to Old Canton pocket park to check on my Little Free Library Charter #86014 (littlefreelibrary.org/ourmap/). We cross the street to say good morning to the huge bullfrog that lives in the koi pond at Flatlands Bourbon & Bayou (too early for the best ever sazerac or an ice cream 2021

at Four Fat Cows) and then reserve our spot for Southern Porch’s breakfast with divine buttery grits and beignets. Starting off again, we pause a moment to enjoy Mercantile Social’s current decorating theme (it’s a Grinch world for the holidays!), and turn the corner for a quick check on progress at the Hamilton Hotel construction – beautiful boutique hotel where visiting family and friends will be able to stay. Although I could cross Main Street to walk through City Center, I save that for weekends when I can also enjoy the farmers’ market. Heading west on Milton Avenue, I can easily envision the days when this was the core of Alpharetta with small-town stores. Even today, every shopkeeper likely knows your name! I love getting a shout out from my favorite shopkeepers at Korner Soak (softest PJs ever), La Bella Maison (love the Nest fragrances), Sis & Moon (where I first found Kathleen Taylor’s artwork), and Clothes Horse. If food is on my mind, instead of ordering pizza from a chain store like I would have done in the old days, within minutes I can get a wonderful wood-fired pizza from Minnie Olivia Pizzeria complimented by the best butternut squash soup in town! Crossing over Milton I come to my very favorite restaurant, Coalition, where they even created a drink for me – the “Gracie” – a fabulous grapefruit old fashioned. The food is excellent, and the staff (my “food family”) makes me feel so welcomed. This is where my neighbors meet every Wednesday night for burgers and beer! If entertaining at home, then Savory Gourmet may have crafted a charcuterie board for me. I’ve likely stopped by Fermented for the perfect bottle of wine and ElleB for the perfect hostess gift. On the fashion side I’ve gone from collecting Louboutin shoes (way too fancy for walking the dogs) to collecting Chrome Heart sunglasses

There is VIBRANCY below the canopies of TREES and a sense of LIVING in a small town where HISTORY is TREASURED and the FUTURE planned. 2021

from b.spectacled. All Inspired has the perfect outfit to compliment my mood, and they always have a biscuit for my pups! If I need my spirits lifted, then I head to Youthtopia MedSpa (where I treated myself to a monthly membership) or Hammond Nails (love the aromatic pedicure). And if feeling punk and need a lift, then I grab a healthy drink at Kale Me Crazy! Remember, all of these delights are just within a block of my home! If I were to become bored, then City Center, Avalon, and NorthPoint are all within 2 miles. My “city” living is everything I envisioned plus more! With my day outlined, now I return to the story of how I ended up in Downtown Alpharetta. The company I worked for was headquartered in Alpharetta on Windward so, in 2002, when I returned to Atlanta after living in Boston for several years, the Alpharetta/Milton area was my first choice. I found the perfect home in Potterstone off Thompson Road: 4,700 square feet of house on over 2 acres of property with a beautiful natural setting and an easy commute to Alpharetta and to 400 when I needed to go into Atlanta. My lifestyle needs changed after retirement (I’m a “recovering” c-level technology executive). In late 2014, I begin looking for a new home where I could focus more on enjoying what life had to offer (versus the work of maintaining a house and property or living to work) and a new community (beyond my work world). At that time, Downtown Alpharetta had a “vision” and was going through an evolution that I wanted to be a part of! Downsizing was not easy – I had several thousand books, a studio with a weaving loom and easel, a basement full of way too many holiday decorations, outdoor furniture, items from the home of my parents who had passed away … just so much stuff accumulated over decades. First-world problem, I know. In hindsight I should have moved sooner, and it would have been easier to donate all and just start over! As I moved into my new home, I found many of my neighbors had gone through similar downsizing experiences. In retirement we rediscovered the value of experiences and relationships over “stuff.” The diversity of our community, the benefits of living in Downtown Alpharetta, and even sheltering together during the pandemic – all brought us closer together. Alpharetta is indeed awesome! Alpharetta & Milton 25

The students think for themselves to solve problems and come up with solutions. The students master the material before moving onto the next lesson, and the multi-age classrooms encourage mentoring but still working on their own pace.
