Our Story From the moment we opened the doors of our first Nandina location in Aiken, South Carolina, more than 17 years ago, we have believed that every home should be full of Real Life and Real Style. Real life is hectic, over-scheduled, disheveled, fun, and fulfilling. It encompasses the beautiful chaos that is family, pets, laundry, messy kitchens, and even professions, all under the same roof. To us, a real home is full of real life without having to sacrifice real style. The driving force behind our work is to create spaces that express who we are, and reflect what we believe in. Our professional interior design team brings years of experience and a wealth of talent to the job. Thanks to our hardworking team, Nandina’s success is reflected in our ability to grow the business and create in areas that span beyond Aiken. In 2010 we launched our second Nandina location in Atlanta, which has since relocated to Sandy Springs, Georgia. In 2020 our third Nandina location opened its doors for business in Greenville, South Carolina. It is our desire that every Nandina client experience interior design in an entirely new way. We are proud of our lifestyle-designed showrooms, which act as a vehicle for that experience. Although these three cities and their Nandina stores appear to be different from one another, there is a common theme: a focus on reflecting our clients’ styles and lives throughout their homes. Interior design with Nandina means experiencing design consulting that is personalized, collaborative, principled, and focused on creating real homes for those who live real lives.

The Elements of Design BY S U SA N V I C TO R

At Nandina Home & Design our talented team of interior designers are tasked with producing designs that reflect the “real life and real style” of each of their clients. Although they make this process appear effortless, they have mastered an arduous art form that emphasizes combining beauty, functionality, and creativity to transform a house into a stunning home. Creating stunning spaces that reflect our clients’ unique personalities requires the seamless integration of multiple elements of style, which work together to elevate ambiance, evoke emotions, provide comfort, and reflect the personalities of those within them. Throughout this 2023 edition of our N Home Look Book we explore 8 key elements of interior design. When used effectively, be it alone or in conjunction with each other, these elements work to create stunning interiors for any style home ranging from traditional or modern to eclectic or transitional. The elements of style are not mutually exclusive, and oftentimes multiple elements are combined to create homes that suit the real lives of our clients. As you peruse this edition of N Home 2023, you will see how each of our talented and skilled designers used the elements of style to craft exquisite spaces for all their clients.   5

1. Color Color holds the power to transform any room, igniting moods and emotions. When expertly selected and combined, color sets the stage for an entire space. Whether you love the energy that bold and vibrant hues add to a design or seek the tranquility and calm of a neutral pallet color is the key.

2. Composition Composition refers to the cohesive relationship between different elements in a room. Beautiful composition is difficult to define but very easy to see when it is successfully achieved. It ensures that everything in the space works harmoniously to create a unified whole.

N Home

3. Proportion and Scale Maintaining proportion and scale is pivotal in crafting a visually pleasing design. Making the mistake of placing something that is too large or too small in a room can affect the overall feel of the space. Striking the perfect balance ensures that everything - even the smallest accessory – fits seamlessly

4. Texture and Pattern At Nandina we love to say texture is another color. Texture and pattern can add depth and tactile intrigue to a living space. The integration of diverse textures and patterns in rugs, furniture, wallpaper, and art brings a dynamic element to any room.

N Home

5, Emphasis Emphasis is like the exclamation point of design. It is a focal point that draws attention to a specific area or element in a room. It can be created through the use of color, contrast, lighting, or unique design features – and it always adds drama and visual interest to a space.

6. Lighting Next to color, nothing gives a space more emotion, ambiance, and character than how light is introduced. You can harness the beauty of natural light by maximizing windows or using delicate sheers to infuse spaces with an ethereal, breezy feel. Utilize ceiling fixtures, wall sconces, or lamps to establish layers of light, accentuate focal points, and orchestrate moods throughout your home.

N Home

Volume 3 Look Book   11

7. Balance Achieving balance with design involves distributing visual weight evenly throughout a space. Symmetrical (often considered formal) or asymmetrical (informal) balanced arrangements create a sense of equilibrium and visual harmony.

8. Well-curated accents and accessories These enhance the visual appeal of a space. From artwork and sculptures to heirlooms and statement pieces, these elements add personality and create focal points. It is this final layer of design that adds warmth and tells a story about the individual homeowners.

We often speak of creating designs for our clients’ homes that reflect “Real Life and Real Style,” but sometimes the realities of real life are much more complicated than what a simple brand statement portrays. This is a story about a family who consistently displays the true meaning of grace and the power of love to make good out of what is given to them. Over seven years ago one of our most valued employees was severely injured in an automobile accident. After months of lifesaving care and grueling rehabilitation, Chase remained fully dependent, requiring 24-hour care and a wheelchair for mobility. Without hesitation, Chase’s parents, Angela and Robert, brought him home to the three-bedroom, ranch-style house he grew up in. Their lives changed dramatically, but Angela and Robert continue to create and maintain a rich, eventful, and love-filled life for their son. Several years later, Angela and Robert asked us to work with them on designing a new home that would not only accommodate Chase’s disabilities, but would also reflect their family’s relaxed open-door policy and love of style. Angela stated, “Chase loves color and is the epitome of a forward fashionable man. I want this home to pay homage to his love of design!” This project was truly a labor of love, as each area challenged us to remain true to the elements of style. Our ultimate goal was to produce stunning spaces that were functional, accessible, full of light and color, and reflective of this amazing family.

An open-concept living area was needed to allow for easy navigation of Chase’s wheelchair throughout the space while also providing enough seating for the entire family when they return home to visit. Remaining true to their love of color, Angela and Robert embraced the idea of a blue kitchen with the addition of a cinnamon-colored velvet sofa in the living area. Bold lighting and an asymmetrical stone fireplace and shelving add just a hint of modern to this transitional room design. One of the family’s most significant design requests, involved creating a separate, large private area for Chase that would afford adequate space for his therapy, a fully ADA-compliant bathroom, and a seating area for his nursing staff giving the family the privacy they desire and deserve. It was imperative that this area reflect Chase’s personal love of color and style. His hospital bed is anchored on a focal wall of cobalt blue, geometric vinyl wallpaper and framed with modern polished nickel sconces. An original abstract piece by John Ishmael hangs above the center of his bed. As opposed to utilitarian, this room screams color and style. This home is a family home that not only accommodates Chase’s specific needs; it mirrors the infectious joy of an extended family of sisters, brothers-in-law, and a gaggle of beautiful nieces and nephews. Angela and Robert will frequently remind anyone who will listen of their happy and blessed life, stressing the pleasure that comes from sharing it with their son, Chase.

BEHIND the design

Understanding accessibility is critical when designing a home for a client with special needs. My background in healthcare as a physical therapist was invaluable to this project. Space planning was critical, but because we wanted the main living areas to feel warm and inviting, we still needed to incorporate enough furnishings to accommodate the family. Every area allows space for Chase’s wheelchair to be moved into the gathering, all rugs are low pile to accommodate the wheelchair. The floors of Chase’s private suite are luxury vinyl planks, as they are scratch-resistant and easy to care for. The bathroom was designed to allow caregivers access to assist with showers and grooming. The sleek blue porcelain tile and unique sconces on the mirror provide this bathroom high style without sacrificing function. The outdoor area is fully accessible with its ramps, and the inground pool’s ramping allows Chase’s wheelchair to be moved into the pool before taking Chase into the water. The main house has bedrooms designed for the daughters and their spouses and features a large upstairs game room for all the grandchildren to enjoy. Design details abound throughout the home; custom judges paneling on the walls of the foyer and study, wallpaper creates focal areas of interest, grass cloth and custom rugs add texture, and custom lighting accents the design in every room.

Re-Birth of a Grande Dame DESIGN BY SUE SHANNON, NANDINA AIKEN P H OTO G R A P H Y BY

S H E L LY M A R S H A L L S C H M I D T

Behind a beautiful old iron gate in the heart of Aiken stands a grand old dame who waited half a century for the right owner to infuse new life into her old bones. The estate was designed and built in 1935 by Augustus Constantine for the Verenes family, who later titled the property The Constantine House. Cody Anderson grew up locally, and for years he looked through that very gate with fascination, yearning for the day when he might be able to live within it. That opportunity presented itself in 2019, and the ensuing renovation launched to restore her to original beauty. Thus began the challenge of infusing a fresh design palate appropriate for a young owner while remaining true to the historical richness of the home. The process included incorporating furnishings designed and purchased for the owner’s previous “Charleston-style” home. Layering patterns and textures in upholstery, draperies, and rugs are key characteristics of traditional design. That, along with carefully curated art and accessories, provokes the feeling that generations of family have come and gone, leaving their mark behind. Upon entry to The Constantine House, an expansive foyer leads to the formal living and dining spaces. Modern iron console tables play off of the original leaded glass transom over the front door to create a juxtaposition with the more traditional architectural elements of the space. The living and dining spaces honor their roots while also incorporating a fresh perspective with their light fabrics, rich trims, and clean-lined furniture selections mixed with family heirlooms. The sunny breakfast nook serves as the perfect gathering spot for morning coffee or a casual dinner at home.

Perhaps the most beloved room is the “smokey” lounge, located adjacent to the living room. Designed for small group conversation over a wellmixed cocktail, the pattern play here creates a laid-back vibe reminiscent of a country retreat. Whether it’s entertaining guests or enjoying a quiet weekend at home, the refreshed Constantine House has a graceful elegance that will last for generations.

BEHIND the design

Mixing patterns and colors of old and new pieces can be a daunting process for many clients. Cody, a young professional with an old soul, made the process easy and fun. His love of traditional elements with an Asian flair was an immediate fit for the emerging beauty of The Constantine House. To keep it fresh and relevant to the 21st century, he was thoughtfully pushed out of his comfort zone and encouraged to layer in and play with some modern touches. For example, the crystal chandelier and dining room table are transitional vestiges of classic design. In the living room traditional style sofa and chair frames are updated with smaller rolled arms and fresh fabrics. The side tables are sleek gold and glass, and the coffee table has a new traditional style with its brass accents. The overall combination feels both natural and timeless. The refined Southern style of the historic Constantine House is present in every room. That being said, the entire house is artfully layered with modern touches that reflect an updated take on comfort: essential design elements for our Real Life, Real Style philosophy.

This breathtaking home nestled along the tranquil shores of Lake Keowee is the perfect retreat from fast-paced life in the city. When designing and building this modern lake house, our clients wanted to embrace a harmonious blend of nature and contemporary elegance. It is an architectural marvel that showcases the seamless integration of contemporary style with the outdoor elements. Created with meticulous attention to detail and a profound appreciation for the surrounding landscape, this dwelling redefines the concept of lakeside living. Large floor-to-ceiling windows on both the front façade and lake-facing side of the house allow natural light to stream through the main living space, offering views of a floating architectural staircase in the front and a picturesque lake view from the back. The color palette is inspired by the gentle hues of the lake, with its soft blues and greens. Throughout the home these colors are showcased through various fabrics and art pieces. While the furnishings and accessories were carefully curated to complement the organic aesthetic of the home’s surroundings, they too are inviting and durable as to accommodate large family gatherings. The main focal point of the living area is the stunning fireplace. The tile’s soft, flowing blue mimics water and instantly grabs the attention of anyone admiring the home’s beauty. The fireplace became the focal point of the room once it was paired with minimalist-style furniture. Sleek, low-profile sofas and armchairs upholstered in natural fabrics exude sophistication and relaxation. We incorporated texture with a geometric rug, a large custom-made blue leather ottoman, and fun pillow fabrics that highlight the blue tones of the fireplace.

Lighting and unique furniture pieces were used throughout the openconcept living and dining areas as design focal points. These additions create depth and character but remain harmonious with the overall design. A contemporary starburst chandelier highlights the rustic elegance of a local artisan’s work: a book-matched walnut, live-edge dining table customized for the home. In the living room, a modern sculptural sofa table carefully curated with accessories acts as a beautiful accent as you enter the room. The master bedroom is a serene oasis that conjures up the feeling of an early morning mist rising off the lake – it features the perfect blend of muted greens and blues. Mid-century furniture is warm and inviting yet simple in style. An impressionistic landscape, alongside simple yet dramatic accessorizing, complete this paired-down and sophisticated design. The second floor of the home spotlights a brightly colored game room that features an oversized pit-style sectional paired with inviting, cobalt blue ottomans that encourage lounging, game playing, and TV viewing for family and friends. This architecturally stunning home is a modern lakeside oasis with features that create an environment perfect for the weekend retreats of its owners and their extended families.

BEHIND the design

We are privileged to have had the opportunity to collaborate on this project with our client, who also happens to own a local commercial contracting company. He and his wife pushed the boundaries of their design aesthetic by choosing to build a very modern lake house retreat. Their permanent residence is much more traditional in style. To assist them in achieving this goal, they recruited the skills of Evan Cantrall, Senior Architect with MHK Architecture. Obviously, the architecture, in addition to the choice of finishings, were the foundation of our interior design plan. The primary design element is color, as the palette of each room reflects the rich diversity of colors that exist around the property. The variety of these colors allowed us to adorn each space with a distinct color palette, ranging from soft blues and creams in the living room and misty greens and browns in the master bedroom to fun, bright green and cobalt blue in the upstairs game room. Although the main living area of the home is an open concept design, we incorporated some focal points in every room to delineate and define the character of the space. In the living area, for example, a large floor-to-ceiling fireplace was clad with blue porcelain tiles to replicate the color of water. This became the foundation for the palette of the room. In the dining room, the positioning of the modern chandelier over a rustic live-edge artisan walnut table made for a dramatic feature element in the space.

Settled along an old back road in the upstate of Greenville, South Carolina sits an alluring modern farmhouse. The exterior architectural elements of crisp white brick, bronze accents, and cedar shutters intermingle to create a strong framework that our client wanted to continue on into the interior of his new home. Symmetrical white shaker paneled walls accent the entry foyer and guide the eye to the coffered ceiling in the great room, which mimics the same effect. A palette of gentle gray paint spans the walls and lightstained, large plank white oak covers the floor. Eclectic elements of texture and tone dominate the home’s main spaces, providing masculine yet comfortable interior furnishings. Dark leather and velvet paired with soft linen and reclaimed wood exude a casual and laid-back vibe that is important to the homeowner. An oversized porcelain tiled fireplace mimics the look of concrete. A reclaimed lumber mantle found in an old local barn is paired with ambient lighting and unique bachelors’ chests on each side of the fireplace to create a strikingly modern focal point in the room. Custom fabrics, draperies, and hand-selected tile add a luxurious yet warm atmosphere to the great room. Pops of blue and green appear throughout the home, reflecting the homeowner’s passion for golf. This is echoed in the use of his personal photographs of Pebble Beach and Bandon Dunes. Black and white tile is used throughout the kitchen and master bathroom portraying the modern farmhouse vibe while simultaneously injecting a creative use of a solid surface backdrop.

Lofty outdoor spaces encourage further gathering of friends and family. Customized by a local artisan, a hand-built bed swing takes center stage. In homage to our client’s southern roots, the porch ceilings are painted haint blue, which is rumored to keep bad spirits away. After all, even a flawlessly planned contemporary modern farmhouse in the Upstate can benefit from a little Gullah luck.

BEHIND the design

Our client wanted a home that felt modern and masculine yet warm and inviting. The modern farmhouse interiors are punctuated with masculine statements like architecturally interesting black leather chairs, a large round reclaimed wooden coffee table, and a natural cowhide rug. As an owner of Clayton Tile, a popular and well-established local Greenville business, our client was on board with using tile as bold design statements throughout the house. The fireplace, clad in large format tile that resembles concrete, became the focal point of the great room. The antiqued mirrored tile provided the perfect backdrop for the bar tucked in the great room. The black and white marble and porcelain geometric tile used on an entire wall in the master bath is the ultimate focal point for a custom vanity and striking black iron sconces.

Transforming a Carriage House Apartment: The Power of Color and Light DESIGNED BY JOHN ISHMAEL, NANDINA ATLANTA P H OTO G R A P H Y BY

S H E L LY M A R S H A L L S C H M I D T

Often a renovation project can be driven as much by emotion as by need. Such was the case for this transformative carriage house studio apartment. The project started with a desire for the client to have a guest space that would also serve as a summer apartment that would entice his daughter back home during her summer breaks from college. The intimate studio, with its full bath and small kitchen, needed some real thought as to how it all would be used. The design concept focused on creating an intimate space that maximized natural light while incorporating modern aesthetics and functionality into a small space. We utilized color to add a bohemian youthfulness while still remaining sophisticated enough to appeal to a broad spectrum of potential guests. The kitchen was designed to have more counter space by using an induction burner system that works underneath the porcelain countertop. It allows the countertop to be used while no one is cooking and makes the space look modern and clean. The hexagon backsplash, along with open walnut shelves, lend the room an open and airy feel. The small built-in banquette allows the table to fit snugly in the window, providing a comfy place to eat meals. In a studio space, the need for storage becomes critical. The roof line left space to build closets in this unused space and added texture to the room. This allowed the bed to be framed with panels. Color and light reign supreme in this design. The fine line was to add the corals, blues, pinks, and golds that would both fit the daughter’s aesthetic and be appreciated by other guests for the remainder of

42   N Home

the year. To dress the windows, roman shades were employed with bright coral tape to define the windows, and white linen was utilized to allow light to brighten the room and provide privacy. Warm textures with herringbone flooring, gold light fixtures, and a playful tile pattern and backsplash in the bathroom added to the texture of the design.

This design gave the client a multiuse carriage house apartment with a modern, colorful, and light-filled place, which will be enjoyed by everyone who visits.

BEHIND the design

I love the challenge of designing multi-use small spaces. It often requires thinking outside the box. To define zones and maximize functional space, I employed design elements of color and light. If a typical wall of upper and lower cabinetry had been employed, the space would have felt cramped and heavy. As an alternative, a creative wall of tile became the backdrop for open shelving, which expanded the space. The use of a porcelain countertop with a hidden induction cook surface doubled the amount of workspace in this tiny area. Using found spaces, like the eaves under the roofline, to tuck closets, a desk, and a small bench, creates much-needed storage and unique lifestyle zones throughout the oneroom space. While laying out the small banquet for the dining space in the kitchen, I was able to minimize the depth of the seat by hanging the back cushion on the wall as opposed to stacking pillows on the bench seat. This allowed us to tuck the table in, closer to the window. It was the use of bold color through art, accessories, and textiles that took this tiny studio to the next level of design. The bright, light-filled, colorful space makes this one-room carriage house apartment live large!

Upon meeting our client for the very first time, we realized that he is an extraordinary individual. He is a tech entrepreneur, veteran, and passionate board game collector and player. We were honored and excited to join him as he started on yet another life journey — creating his dream home in Evans, Georgia. The vision? A spacious 4-bedroom home that mirrors his lifestyle and effortlessly transforms into an inviting retreat for friends, family, and guests. As designers, we sometimes come across a client who perfectly aligns with our creative aspirations, and this project was indeed a blessing. Entrusting us with his vision, he allowed us to bring it to life. This home resonates with sophisticated charm, characterized by graceful arches and intricate custom woodwork. The blend of classic and contemporary furnishings, artwork, and lighting create a harmonious fusion that delights and captivates. Reminders of the owner's Greek heritage, hobbies, and cherished collections are seamlessly incorporated. Designed for entertainment, the foyer flows into an expansive area encompassing the living, dining, kitchen, and den spaces – a true open floor plan. Each area stands confidently on its own while seamlessly converging for comfort and convenience. We established a neutral canvas and employed texture, scale, and light to define distinct zones. Proportion played a pivotal role in taming the large open rooms. Carefully curated items draw the gaze downward, striking a balance with the furnishings and architectural accents. A coffered ceiling demarcates the formal living area, lending interest, while the den's vaulted and N Home

beamed ceiling is brought back to scale through well-placed lighting. The gourmet kitchen boasts dark-stained cabinetry, creating an intimate transitional space that bridges the formal living and den. The dining area is elegant with its 12' ceilings enhanced by window treatments, a paneled wall, and a stunning chandelier. Textures and materials harmonize seamlessly throughout the home. Accent walls in the formal living space sport a herringbone-patterned wood veneer, complemented by trim-enhanced windows. Brass, iron, wood, and stone coexist in public areas, softened by lush velvets, textured linens, and leather. The bar tucked in a transitional hall flaunts a blend of patterned 3-dimensional tile, floating wood shelves, and inviting brass fixtures – a hub for both coffee and cocktails. While natural and artificial light brightens much of the home, the powder room is a delightful enigma. Dark and mysterious, it employs floor-toceiling antiqued mirrors to set the tone. Sculptural, larger-scale wall sconces serve as a backdrop for a custom-reeded vanity topped with natural stone. The powder room, undoubtedly, is where the party is. Suffused with natural light pouring in from a grand bay window and high ceilings adorned with a dramatic backlit cove, the master suite beckons. Spacious and serene, dark walls provide a soothing backdrop to the sleek lines of a king-sized bed and nightstands. Materials continue to shine – hair-on-hide ottomans, hand-knotted wool rugs, assorted woods, and metallic sculptural accents. Upstairs the focus shifts to the owner's board game passion, meticulously designed to cater to this hobby. Custom cabinetry houses specialized game pieces accompanied by a convenient wet bar. Witnessing the beauty and complexity of these games, beyond the traditional, like Monopoly, was a pure delight. The objective was clear: design a home that echoes the owner's essence, his roots, and his hobbies while providing a welcoming sanctuary for guests. With the owner's unwavering confidence, the builder's flexibility, and a dash of time, this home stands as a true realization of a visionary dream. N Home

BEHIND the design

Working with a client who is willing to think outside the box and collaborate allowed me the creative freedom to apply multiple design elements throughout the creation of his home. The use of focal points in multiple areas created design accents that add character. In the great room we clad the back of the fireplace wall with a wood veneer wallpaper done in a herringbone pattern, which added depth and dimension. An entire wall of three-dimensional tile became the stunning backdrop of a bar tucked in a hallway, instantly transforming it into a feature area of the home. Lighting is a key design element I incorporated to define spaces and tame the scale of ceiling heights. The foyer and dining room chandeliers are statement pieces in both rooms and live comfortably within view of each other. Large gold hammered pendants are the perfect accent for black-stained cabinetry in the kitchen. I believe accessorizing is an art and can transform a room, but more importantly, it is a critical design element used in defining the personality of a home and its owner. From the selection of art to the placement of board games on the shelves in the game room, we wanted every detail to reflect the unique personality of our client, and based on our client’s feedback, I think we nailed it!

Transforming a timeless Bungalow into a modern home that reflects our client’s desire for style and function was a dream project, as it was the perfect blend of creativity and collaboration. Stefanie and Colin, both busy professionals, approached us with a typical design dilemma: how to create a home that reflects style and sophistication for entertaining friends and family while remaining comfortable and functional in order to accommodate day-to-day living. What makes this couple unique is their openness to the design process and their willingness to work with us to create spaces that are truly the perfect blend of real life and real style. This home in Buckhead, Georgia has fabulous architectural bones with nods to the craftsman style, but it features modern design elements. Large rooms, white walls, and beautiful finishes became the canvas upon which we used multiple design elements to create beautifully unique spaces. We transformed a simple front living room into a bespoke piano room, which provides visitors with a touch of sophistication and functions as a comfortable retreat where they can share a cocktail or read a book. Four swivel chairs form a small sitting area juxtaposed aside the focal point of the room: a beautiful baby grand piano. The glamor of the reptile-embossed metal backs of the chairs blend perfectly with the comfort of the soft velvet interior seats. The chairs hold their own next to the drama of the piano and modern chandelier that anchors the sitting area. The piano room opens up to a small space, which we transformed into a much-needed office for Stefanie. Home offices are a unique challenge to design, and this was especially true in this home. Opening directly from the “style statement” piano room, the office had to be beautifully designed yet remain a workhorse in regards to functionality.

To accomplish such a feat, we chose to make the desk the focal point of the room. Handsomely curated and chock-full of storage with a large worktop, it is the perfect accent to the room. The natural light that streams into the office is controlled through the use of elegant window treatments that mix functional sheers with whimsically-patterned custom drapery panels. The choice of a rustically refined, multi-tiered, white chandelier transforms this home office into a show stopper. Our personal favorite space in this home is the dramatic and moody formal dining room. Dark walls and trim are a striking contrast to the tiered brass chandelier and sleek modern chairs - both from Arteriors – alongside a dark sapphire blue sideboard with brass hardware from Currey and Company. The harmonious mix of modern, moodiness, and contrast set the standard for this room. The Master bedroom, a private and arguably the most important space, showcases some of the most important design elements employed in the design of this home. The room is a perfect balance of masculine and feminine elements with rich colors on the walls and in the upholstery, plush velvety fabrics, bold and modern bedside tables featuring dramatic marble slab lamps, and a dramatic gold branch-inspired chandelier. These details create an oasis of style to be enjoyed every single night. It is the perfect place for our clients to sleep peacefully knowing that they have successfully created the home of their dreams.

We transformed a simple front living room into a bespoke piano room, which provides visitors with a touch of sophistication and functions as a comfortable retreat where they can share a cocktail or read a book.

BEHIND the design

This design project was a delight because I was able to incorporate significant style elements to make each room a statement of its own, but with a cohesive nod to the overall design of the home. Lighting became one of the key design elements used, with the purpose of adding emphasis and character to each room. Every chandelier and lamp functions like jewelry for the space, adding drama but remaining true to the overall design. Instead of using walls as anchors, I utilized floating furniture, allowing me to create balance in the room by distributing visual weight evenly throughout the space. This is a technique often used for large, open commercial spaces such as hotel lobbies, but it is often overlooked in residential spaces. The layering of textures, materials, and colors adds interest and dynamic appeal. My clients awarded me free reign with this specific design element. Dark walls and matching trim, richly textured fabrics, and bold furniture selections like the embossed metal swivel chairs and the sapphire blue buffet are just a sampling of the creative ways in which we layered elements.

A Designer’s Cottage: Globally Inspired and Richly Layered D E S I G N B Y C H R I S T I N A S C H A R F, N A N D I N A A I K E N P H OTO G R A P H Y BY

S H E L LY M A R S H A L L S C H M I D T

As a lifelong equestrian, I become aware of Aiken while living and working as an interior designer in Savannah for over a decade. I have always been drawn to the avid horse community and beautiful, vibrant downtown area. When a wonderful little cottage mid-renovation became available, I started planning my move. Before I knew it, I had transitioned from working independently as the principal designer in an architectural firm to joining the Nandina team as a lead designer. At the same time, I was knee-deep in finalizing the renovation of my cottage and getting my horse, my precious standard poodle, Dash, and I settled into our new home. Once the renovation of my cottage was complete, the next step was to create the personality of the space through its interiors. I wanted a home that reflects my love of collecting; every item either has a story or sparks an emotion that brings me pleasure. I am always on the hunt for the hidden treasure that will find its perfect fit among the layers of design in my home. It was on an antiquing adventure in Aiken that I spotted a very colorful Hermes scarf. I couldn’t believe my luck. It was affordable and likely still available because no one could figure out what to do with such an explosion of color. I snapped it up and decided to frame it, with the intention of sharing this wonderful rainbow of equestrian ribbons with everyone who enters my home. I have a very neutral living room featuring layered textiles, a hand-knotted tone-ontone rug, and unmatched sofas - one in velvet and the other in linen. The scarf functions perfectly as a focal point above the marble fireplace. It was the pièce de resistance for the design of the room and mirrors my belief that “everyone is a winner” and deserves a ribbon!

The kitchen proved to be a bit of a space planning challenge. With its tall ceilings and limited wall space, this concept required a little outside-thebox planning. I chose to emphasize height by taking the upper cabinetry to the ceiling and using a very deep crown molding to balance the scale. I then made the decision to go dark with the finish in order to ground the space. A matte black stain allows the wood grain to peak through, aging it a bit, which fits the era of the cottage. I love to entertain casually, and the large island with ample seating can function as a dining and gathering space. My master bedroom is bathed in neutrals and saffron. I wanted this room to feel soft while bringing a sense of peace. It is a space that comforts me while simultaneously recharging me at the start of my day. This incredible color is symbolic of its wisdom and lightness. Saffron is known as the color of love - supposedly increasing pleasure and controlling anger! Color makes a difference in our lives. This room is my charging station. A life spent traversing the globe as an army brat nurtured my penchant for collecting. Art, textiles, and keepsakes from worldwide sojourns infuse my home with a diverse cultural tapestry. I hope my home is a testimony to global artistry, where each artifact whispers tales of its origin. My narrative is a tribute to design, an ode to my journey as a designer. My new life in Aiken and my cottage reflects this evolution, intertwining architecture and treasures. Every corner narrates my tale, bridging the past and present into a space that is a reflection of me. It's a space where stories come alive, and my passion finds its home.

In my own experience, a room is never really finished. I am constantly tweaking – moving furniture, re-arranging art, changing accessories. The point is as I evolve and change, I want my home to always reflect who I am. 62   N Home

BEHIND the design

Below are some key elements of design that I incorporated in my own home. • Lighting: I am a big fan of unique lighting fixtures and believe a beautiful chandelier or pendant can transform a room. The cottage boasts tall ceilings, and although the rooms are cozy, they can handle larger chandeliers and pendants because of the added height. The pendants in the kitchen, the living room chandelier, and the chandelier over the bathtub are over-scaled yet fit the rooms perfectly. • Color: I can live easily in rooms that are grounded with neutrals, but in my world black can act as a neutral, as well as the saffron. The black cabinetry in my kitchen is the perfect neutral – grounding the space while adding depth. Most would think of Saffron as a pop of color, but when used throughout the space, like in my bedroom, it washes the room with warmth much like a sunset or sunrise sky. • Well-curated accents and accessories: Every item in my home has a story. How the story is told is based on the curation of each piece and how it works with everything else in the room. A collection of prints becomes a gallery of color, handmade scarves become throws for the back of a chair, and even found bird feathers and colorful stones, when placed in a small bowl, can bring back the memory of a place or time.

Renovation Transformation 90’s Style Home Makeover DESIGNED BY JOHN ISHMAEL, NANDINA ATLANTA P H OTO G R A P H Y BY

Renovating a home is an exciting endeavor that allows homeowners to breathe new life into their living spaces. When it comes to updating specific areas like the mid-90s designed two-story great room, a dark and dated kitchen, a seldom used formal living room, and a traditional dining room, thoughtful design choices can transform these spaces into showcases of personal style and comfort. When my clients first came to me, it was as if they had walked out of an episode of the popular HGTV series, “Love It or List It.” They lived and raised their family in a spacious two-story home in Sandy Springs, Georgia. Although they loved the location and layout of the house, they felt it had become dated and did not work with their lifestyle, nor did it reflect their personalities. After months of searching for the perfect house in the perfect location for the perfect price, my clients concluded that with the right help, they could learn to love their current home again by making it their version of perfect. We set out on a journey to redesign the two-story great room, renovate the kitchen, convert the formal living room into a cozy cocktail room, and transform the dining room into a sophisticated showstopper. The two-story living room presented a unique design challenge that demanded a balanced approach. Maximizing natural light through wellchosen window treatments and reflective surfaces was key. An original sculptural wood carving becomes the room’s focal point. Positioned centrally over the fireplace, it draws the eye into the room. The color scheme complements the space's grandeur, yet it warms and grounds the room while remaining cohesive. We used multiple blues and paired them with a soft, sandy caramel. Seating arrangement plays a pivotal role in making rooms comfortable and inviting. Properly scaled furniture ensures that the space doesn't feel crowded or overwhelming. In addition, we added a custom mantel, which complements the wood sculptural carving and ties the design together.

Lighting fixtures that emphasize the room's height, in addition to the layering of light sources, contribute to the overall ambiance. A grand three-tiered chandelier fills the space created by the height of the two stories and provides an overall light source. It is layered with multiple floor and table lamps for ambiance. A contemporary media unit replaced an old TV unit and a dark bank of wood shelving. With its open structure, it is the perfect place to layer art and collectibles. The kitchen renovation was more straightforward. We maintained the existing footprint and cabinets as a foundation while infusing new life and character into the space. The cabinets, once tired and mundane, underwent a remarkable transformation through a fresh coat of paint. This adds contemporary charm to the heart of the kitchen. An outdated, built-in hood made way for an architecturally intriguing replacement, which is mounted on a wall of tile, creating a focal point that captivates the eye. The stunning blue ceiling-to-countertop glass tile backsplash provides a burst of color and texture that compliments the new white cabinetry. The space is further elevated with brass and alabaster light fixtures, exuding an air of timeless elegance by creating a harmonious balance between modernity and classic allure. This kitchen renovation is a testament to the artful blend of preservation and innovation, breathing renewed energy into a familiar environment. The formal dining room redesign is the perfect marriage of traditional design and contemporary flair. A stunning wood table from Hickory Chair takes center stage, capable of expanding to accommodate the cherished Friday night family gatherings. A playful mix of newly upholstered and existing book-matched Mahogany chairs encircle the table and infuse the space with eclectic charm. The elegant Art Deco-inspired buffet retains its place of honor, bridging the past and present seamlessly. A modern light fixture adds just the right touch of glamor to the sophisticated neutral pallet. A richly textured wallpaper envelops the walls, adding depth and character to the refined ambiance.

A once-unused formal living room finds a new purpose as an inviting whiskey room, exuding timeless allure. Rich, dark walls envelop the space, setting a moody and inviting atmosphere. A masculine midcentury bar takes center stage, evoking an air of sophistication. Custom shelves showcase a curated selection of fine spirits, contributing to the room’s distinctive character. A repurposed sectional, adorned with new light silver upholstery, invites relaxation and conversation. Collected artwork adorns the walls, telling stories of the homeowners and showcasing their extended family’s journeys and experiences. This room, seldomly used, has become a family favorite - a place where whiskey enthusiasts gather to savor the drink, the company, and the ambiance.

BEHIND the design

When tasked with the redesign of my client’s home, I transported it from its original 90s style to the mid-20s and beyond. By utilizing basic design elements, we created a functional and cohesive interior that fits my client’s needs. • The two-story rooms of the 90s and early 2000s created a fun challenge. To update the existing architectural style, I had to work with the design elements of proportion, scale, and balance. Adding drapery that spans the height of the windows, dropping in a large three-tier chandelier, and placing a large wood-carved sculpture above the fireplace, brings the eye into the room and balances the proportion. The size of the lighting and art, in addition to the length of the drapery, would feel out of scale in a room with 9ft ceilings, but it works wonderfully in this space. • Texture and pattern reign supreme in the neutral dining room, adding just the amount of sophistication that this room needed. The warm wood tones soften the gray pallet; the wallpaper and metal multidimensional chandelier add texture. • Throughout this re-design, lighting played an integral part in the refresh. From the unique chandelier in the dining room, the three-tiered oversized chandelier in the great room, and the gold pendants in the whiskey room to the modern chandelier and pendants in the kitchen, every space boasts carefully curated focal points with lighting.

A New Beginning DESIGN BY LORI MARVEL, NANDINA AIKEN P H OTO G R A P H Y BY

S H E L LY M A R S H A L L S C H M I D T

My dear client, who recently lost her husband, embarked on a new chapter of her life when she moved to Aiken in 2021. Together they had made the heartfelt decision to leave their beloved home of over 30 years in San Miguel, Mexico to be closer to their family in this charming area. Their San Miguel abode was designed by her husband as an Italian villa in homage to my client’s Italian heritage. In appearance, it was a genuine hacienda that perfectly captured the essence of the Mexican hill country's heritage and landscape. This time around, they decided to embrace a different design perspective—one that would welcome more natural light and reflect the authentic charm of Southern style. While her husband had always taken the lead in the creative realm of home design, this Aiken property marked a significant shift, as my client stepped into the role of the design director with him as her enthusiastic supporter. Little did she know, most of the design process was nearly complete when she lost her partner of 56 years, and now she was left to see their shared dreams come to life without him. With an extensive collection of exquisite blue and white porcelain, it was only natural for these pieces to take center stage in her design vision. Color and carefully chosen accessories would be the key ingredients in crafting the light-filled, inviting interiors she had envisioned. In the formal living room, fabrics and furniture were carefully selected to harmonize with the display of blue and white vases, which are artfully showcased alongside a cherished collection of Lladro figurines. The transitional sofa, chairs, and coffee table blend seamlessly with the traditional porcelain pieces. Given the many years spent in Mexico, it was vital to incorporate elements of their rich history into their new home. The monochromatic foyer came to life with a beautiful tone-on-tone wallpaper and an N Home

When developing the design for my client, I relied heavily on the use of art and accessories to define the direction. The large painting in the foyer became a central focal point for the area and allows for a more monochromatic tone-ontone use of wallpaper and art. The moody dark image of the Virgin of Guadalupe works well in the light-filled foyer and is a perfect reflection of my client’s previous life in Mexico. An extensive collection of blue and white porcelain was a great starting point for the design of the open floor plan of the main part of the home. The living room features a fireplace with custom cabinetry on both sides that we used to artfully display her collection of porcelain and figurines. The porcelain formed the jumpingoff point for the color pallet of the room. A lighter combination of light grays, blues, and creams provides a sophisticated backdrop for the room. In the den, we decided to maintain a neutral palette and pop in light blues and greens with art and custom blue grass cloth chests on each side of the fireplace. This new home for my client reflects her beautiful history and her hopefulness for the future!
