PALLIATIVE CARE NOT JUST FOR END-OF-LIFE
Dr Phillip Good
The theme of National Palliative Care Week May 22-28 is,: ‘It’s your right’ – reminding us of our right to quality care, not only at the end of life but also while living with any life-limiting illness. According to peak body Palliative Care Australia (PCA), while around 40,000 Australians receive palliative care each year, it estimates a further 40,000 are going without it. This is not surprising when a 2021 PCA Survey found that while nine in ten
Mary Nolan dives into the GemLife Maroochy Quays over-50s lifestyle resort’s swimming pool almost every day clutching two dumbbells, with her aim being to build bone strength and help guard against osteoporosis. “I’m not into doing weights in the gym so working out with dumbbells between each lap of the pool is ideal for me,’ said Mary. Residents are spoilt for choice with facilities such as tennis, fully equipped gym, ten-pin bowling, virtual golf, bar and coffee lounge, games and entertainment room, luxury cinema, and so much more at their disposal. She said swimming, especially in a magnesium-enriched pool such as the one at the resort, has a positive impact on bone quality and strength. “While swimming might not be adding density to the bones, it does build muscle, and increasing muscle mass leads to bone formation.” Mary said muscle strength also plays an important role in treating osteoporosis and preventing fractures. In addition, due to its low impact, swimming and other aquatic exercise are excellent options for people with joint problems, the elderly and those with disabilities. Mary suffers with peripheral neuropathy.
of us have heard of palliative care, we don’t fully understand it. The survey also found that half of the respondents had not done anything regarding their end-of-life wishes, finding the subject of death and planning for end-of-life too difficult to talk about. To improve this, awareness raising and talking about end-of-life wishes is key, says SCCQ Board Director and palliative care specialist, Dr Phillip Good. “Palliative care is not just about end-of-life care. “It’s also about making sure that anyone with a life-limiting illness has the right to live as well as possible, for as
Daily use of the GemLife Maroochy Quays indoor magnesium enriched pool is helping resident Mary Nolan keep fit and healthy. The keen swimmer says swimming in the magnesium-enriched pool provides many benefits such as the absorption of minerals into the skin which can lead to lower blood pressure, the repair of nerve and muscle function through better absorption of calcium to the body, as well as boosting immunity and regulating sugar levels. Other GemLife resorts on the Sunshine Coast include GemLife Pacific Paradise and GemLife Palmwoods. long as possible,” Dr Good said. Southern Cross Care Queensland’s Head of Pastoral Services, Julie Walden, says as well as necessary medical support, emotional and spiritual support are vital for both the person living with a lifelimiting illness and their supporters, be they family or friends. “At Southern Cross Care Queensland, we have an experienced team of dedicated pastoral carers available for all our residents and families and we are always here to lend support at a time when many people feel overwhelmed,” Julie said.
