18-27 MARCH, 2022
Sponsors and supporting partners “THE last phase is the most glorious”, a line from Calendar Girls by Tim Firth. This play was written 20 odd years ago as a result of a group of women who attended the local Women’s Institute in The Dales of northern England. These brave women starred in and produced an alternative calendar to raise funds to buy a settee for a local hospital. It was at this hospital where one of the women’s husbands had passed away as a result of leukemia.
This wonderful story was made into a motion picture, a stage play and now a musical.
Coolum Theatre Players will present the stage play in March and April this year which will be directed by Barbara Ryan, a relatively newcomer to the Sunshine Coast.
Barbara relocated to Mount Coolum in 2019 from northern Victoria where she directed and acted for many years in local community and pro-am productions. Previously, she performed with several theatrical companies in Coffs Harbour and was a founding member of Seacreast Productions.
She directed her first show, Deckchairs, for Coolum Theatre Players in April 2021.
The cast and crew of Coolum Theatre Players’ production of Calendar Girls will star in and produce a calendar of their very own with the proceeds of the calendar donated to Katie Rose Cottage.
The CEO John Gabrielson and director/chair Carol Raye from Katie Rose Cottage have identified a need for some new comfy lounge chairs for their guests and so the aim is to raise enough funds from the sales of calendars to make a purchase.
Calendars will be available to buy during the run of the shows at the end of March and start of April and will also be available to purchase directly through Coolum Theatre Players after the show.
Katie Rose Cottage is largely dependent upon donations and volunteers to operate this special service.
For more information about the service, please contact Carol Raye at: carolr@katierosecottage.org.au.
Show tickets are available through North Shore Realty in Coolum. Performance dates are this March – Friday 25, Saturday 26 and Sunday 27, and April – Friday 1, Saturday 2 and Sunday 3.

ROME TO RIO – THE SOUNDS OF ITALY AND BRAZIL
CHANCES are at some time in your life you’ve stood in a lift and heard the Girl from Ipanema tune coming through the speakers. We’re all familiar with it but you may not know that the tune was composed by Antonio Carlos Jobim, a famous songwriter from Brazil who became known as the “father of Bossa Nova”.
Jumping forward 40 years, Brisbane academic and musician Peter Freeman decided to write a thesis on the music of Antonio Carlos Jobim.
Not limited to just writing, Freeman is an incredible musician and arranger and has created shows featuring the music of Jobim and other Brazilian composers.
Freeman’s latest project has seen him collaborate with some of Brisbane’s finest musicians who have an affinity with Brazil and Italy, forming the Tropical Dance Orchestra. Their Rome to Rio show features songs that are the result of a collective exploration of the fascinating musical alchemy between Italy and Brazil.
The six piece band will present some of the most popular and appealing songs by artists such as Ennio Morricone, Vinicius de Moraes, Ary Barroso, Paolo Conte, Bruno Martino, Walter Malgoni, Henry Mancini, Francesco de Gregori, Luiz Bonfá, Antônio Carlos Jobim, Pink Martini and more.
The performance is on Sunday, March 27, 6pm8.30pm at Glass House Brewery, 8/330 Mons Road, Forest Glen. Tickets $54 for dinner and show. Visit stickytickets.com.au/ TheJazzSessions. For more, phone Robyn Brown on 0403 152 397 or email info@ sassyjazz.com.au. Can my new partner’s children challenge my Will?
“My new partner’s children can’t challenge my Will, right?”
Wrong!
There are many misconceptions in relation to the classes of person who are eligible to ‘challenge’ the proposed distribution of your estate.
One common misconception is that it is only ‘blood’ relatives that can pursue a claim.
This is certainly not the case, and the categories of eligible applicants include your step-children as well as your ‘de facto’ step-children.
The court takes into account a number of factors when considering whether a challenge will succeed, including: • the level of need of the challenger; • the size of the estate; • the nature of the relationship between the challenger and the deceased; and • other competing claims on the estate. There are strategies that can be put in place to assist in minimising the effect of any challenge.
A carefully structured estate plan can ensure only the people you intend to benefit do so.
ORTHOPAEDIC

When it’s time for a joint replacement
Patients with symptomatic hip and knee osteoarthritis will often ask me if they should have joint replacement surgery.
This decision comes down to a balance of risk versus benefit. Considerations in this analysis include the severity of the pain, the impact on their quality of life, activity profile, age, other health problems, as well as having appropriate attempts to manage the problem non-operatively.
If the potential risks are higher than the potential benefits, I will inform patients they are not a candidate for surgery. We will then have a long conversation about the non-operative measures they can take to improve their quality of life.
When patients are candidates for joint replacement surgery, I always present the non-operative options as well as inform them about the risks and benefits of the surgery.
It is never for me to tell patients when it is the right time to have elective surgery. This is an intensely personal decision with so many factors. Only the patient knows when the time is right.

SKIN CARE

Quality of skin checks matter
Every day, over 2000 people in Australia are treated for skin cancer and two out of every three people will be diagnosed with a skin cancer by the age of 70.
Yet many Australians are unaware of the value of an accredited skin cancer expert who has completed significant additional study and passed rigorous assessment in the diagnosis, treatment, and management of skin cancer.
There are many “skin cancer clinics” and corporate skin cancer chains. This does not guarantee an accredited doctor. Choosing an accredited expert ensures you receive best-practice diagnosis and treatment by an expert in special examination, eliminating unnecessary biopsies, effective skin cancer surgery with minimal scarring and knowledge of alternatives to surgery.
So, who is an accredited expert? Dermatologists are accredited specialists in this field, along with Fellows of the Australian Institute of Dermatology. Accreditation is also available though the Skin Cancer Institute and Skin Cancer College Australasia.
Choose wisely! Your skin will thank you for it.
