Installing an extra window can improve your views, provide more flexibility for room layout, improve ventilation and add more light. Here’s some advice from Sunshine Mitre 10.

WHAT YOU WILL NEED

TIMBER

• 90 x 45mm or 65 x 35mm structural radiata pine or hardwood to match existing frame, header to suit opening span (check span tables), architrave to match existing internal trim, 65 x 19mm (or larger if required) treated pine or other durable timber for external trim

HARDWARE

• Window to suit opening, 75mm x 8G pack of screws, 1 roll of aluminium flashing (width of wall frame plus at least 25mm), 50 x 1.6mm pack bullet head nails, pack of 25mm galvanised clouts, 75 x 2.5mm nails, 50 x 1.6mm nails, 10mm packers, window lock

OTHER MATERIALS

• Wood stain, clear satin polyurethane, wood putty, paint, gap filler and/or sealant, spackle Step 1: Structural issues In the wall frame above all windows and doors there is a strong beam called a header, which carries the weight of the structure above,. Span tables are available at your local Mitre 10 and will tell you the size and strength of header required. You’ll need to know a few details: roof type (tiled or metal), truss or raft er spacing, roof span, upper or lower storey, and window opening size. If your house has asbestos cladding do not cut it. Contact a licensed asbestos removal contractor for advice.

Step 2: Order your window Try to match your new window to the existing ones. This may be tricky for very old windows, but recycling centres will oft en have old windows in good condition. Windows are available in both standard sizes and made-to-order.

Step 3: Cut the wall and frame the opening Use a stud finder to locate the position of the wall studs and any power, water or gas lines. If there are any services in the way, contact a licensed contractor to have them repositioned. Try to position the window so that you minimise the number of studs removed from the wall.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

Here are the key areas to look at when undertaking a deck check. Source: QBCC.

Fixings

Fixings, including post brackets, should be free from rust, bending or fractures.

Rust may occur more rapidly if you live in a coastal region, although there are products that can be applied to metal fixings or components to slow or prevent this process.

For a weather-exposed deck or balcony, all fixings such as nuts, bolts, screws and nails should be metal with non-corroding properties. In most cases, hot-dipped galvanised fasteners should be used. However, in some highly-corrosive coastal atmospheres, stainless steel fixings will be needed.

Bracing

Bracing is oft en used to support a deck or balcony, helping prevent it from moving under load. continued over>

tip

Protect you deck fixings against the Sunshine Coast’s salty air by investing in products that can be applied to prevent early rust. Talk to the experts at your local hardware store for advice.
