In 1999, an Australian named Bill Morgan was declared dead for 14 minutes after an allergic reaction to medication he was prescribed to help his recovery from a car crash. Later he was revived and lived on unscathed. To celebrate his survival, he bought a Scratch-It and won a $27,000 car. A news team picked up the story and asked him to re-enact the scratch card moment, so he bought another card and won $250,000 live on camera.

Word of the day
In 1964, a teenager named Peter Roberts invented the world’s first quick-release ratchet. He sold his patent to Sears for $US10,000 after the company convinced him that his invention was not worth much more. Sears went on to make $US44 million in its first 10 years selling the ratchet. Mr Roberts sued Sears for fraud and was eventually awarded $US10 million.

While BlackBerry stopped updating operating systems for the mobile phone in 2013, 2022 brought the final nail in the coffin. As of January 4, the company no longer supports BlackBerries running its legacy services, meaning older devices will no longer be able to send text messages or make calls. The German scientist, who is regarded as the father of modern bacteriology, won the Nobel Prize in Physiology and Medicine in 1905. 1896 – Alexander Popov achieves the world’s first radio transmission. The Russian physicist transmitted the words “Heinrich Hertz” from one building of St Petersburg University to another. 1965– Millions watch NASA spacecraft Ranger 9 crash into the Moon. The US space probe broadcast live pictures back to Earth, enabling TV viewers to follow its approach to the Moon and its controlled crash. 1999 – For the first time in its history, NATO attacks a sovereign country. The military alliance bombed Yugoslavia during the Kosovo War – without a UN mandate.
