BUDERIM UPGRADE

TEACHING GIRLS TO STAND STRONG

Walking, cycling and scooting along Buderim’s Alfriston Drive is now safer thanks to a $280,000 upgrade. Sunshine Coast Council and the federal government funded the new two-metre wide, 1.2-kilometre concrete pathway on the southern side of Alfriston Drive from Karawatha Street through to Golf Links Road, and councillor Christian Dickson says locals are loving it. “Safety is always council’s top priority and having a wide, smooth pathway to travel along makes for a much easier journey. It’s great to see so many people already taking advantage of the upgrade.” The upgrade has been made possible thanks to $100,000 from the council and $180,000 from the federal government’s Local Roads and Community Infrastructure Program.

A

local personal trainer and wellness coach who believes it takes a community to raise a child is hoping girls can benefit from a holistic program aimed at helping them thrive in this ever-changing world. Carole Newton of Bonjour Wellness is a licensed instructor of Standing Strong, a non-clinical and non-competitive program for boys and girls aged five to 17. “The goal for Standing Strong is to be the support network, the inspiration and the connection children and families need to thrive in this challenging world we live in,” she says. “It is a place where children and teens feel connected and empowered, and also a place for them to explore and grow their own individuality, self-belief, confidence and inner strength.” The program was founded in 2013 by Western Australian Kim Marie Smith who as a young girl struggled with depression, anxiety, body image, bullying and low confidence. Ms Newton has been in the fitness industry since 1999, and knows health is more than the number that appears on

PAINTLESS DENT REPAIR

Carole Newton runs a wellness program for children and teenagers to help them thrive and grow the scales or how many times you go to the gym every week. “So many factors affect wellbeing including stress, sleep, hormones but also the quality of your thoughts, your confidence – or lack of, and your attitude towards life.

“I feel that women understand this too late in their lives, which means that many suffer from anxiety and depression. “I was already coaching adult women, but I realised that I had to start educating young girls about their true health before their physical and mental health became affected. “This has now become my purpose.” Ms Newton says the program works as a “prevention” tool for mental health issues and is built on three components of movement, mindset and mindfulness, specifically tailored to suit the various age groups. Strong Body incorporates dance, obstacle courses, stretches and boxing, while Strong Mind discusses topics including bullying, body image and self-esteem. Strong Heart delves into activities like yoga and mindful eating to relate to the discussed topics. Ms Newton currently coaches girls but is looking for a male instructor so she can offer the program to boys. The term-long weekly sessions take place at Suncoast Fitness, Wises Road, Maroochydore after school. For upcoming workshops visit bonjourwellness.com.au.
