The Las Vegas Medical Community is Thriving

eing native to Las Vegas, it’s always nice when you are driving in an area of town that you haven’t been to for some time and notice new growth and development. Not only does new construction and expansion mean the community and economy are improving, but also that additional jobs are being created and our community is growing. This past spring I was on my way to a meeting, driving on Rancho Drive, and I noticed a marquis sign in the median that I hadn’t seen before. As I got closer, to my delightful surprise, I saw it was a sign advertising the Las Vegas Medicalpms District.

Having been 3135 extremely busy with the magazine and events the cool gray 7 past couple of months, the fact that pmsI attributed 576 I was unaware we even had a Las Vegas Medical District to having such a full plate! Between MYVEGAS having our best quarter so far, our two incredible Top 100 Women events, celebrating Mother’s Day with my family, my oldest daughter recently graduating from Bishop Gorman High School and my youngest daughter’s birthday, this spring season seemed to just fly by! It’s hard to believe we are already halfway through 2017. As I researched information about the LVMD, I discovered this plan was established by The Las Vegas City Council in 1997 and has had tremendous progress with the overall master

plan, so I realized that I have been out of the loop on the LVMD for quite some time! At our Top Women luncheon we hosted on May 31st, 2017, Mayor Carolyn Goodman came out and discussed progress and development of the LVMD. The medical community in Las Vegas is so vital to our city and we have been noticing an influx of top notch doctors moving to Las Vegas recently.

There are a lot of technological advancements that are transforming the healthcare industry.

Wearable tracking devices can assist with everything from monitoring temperature, measuring contractions, normalizing sleep, to monitoring vital signs and new virtual apps and products are evolving the healthcare industry standards. Another trend we have been noticing on a local level is concierge medicine. As the healthcare industry evolves, so do the leading physicians in an effort to grow their practices. It has been said that concierge “boutique style” medicine has been an expanding option for patients based on the fact that what insurance companies want are not always in alignment with patients’ needs. Regenerative Medicine and Stem Cell Therapy are relatively new, swiftly evolving and are revolutionizing the way medicine is being practiced right here in Las Vegas.

By Candice Shaffer Each year that we work on the Top 100 Docs & Dentists issue, it’s always fascinating to me how many talented and innovative MD’s we have right here in the Valley. During the nomination process, the comments that readers have to say about their favorite physicians are remarkable.

One specific comment that caught my attention was a woman who lives in Arizona. She stated that she travels at least 3 hours to Las Vegas every time she needs to see her doctor because he takes care of her so well! We are pleased to have been able to include him in this issue.

From bedside mannerisms to the courtesy that the doctors who are in this issue extend to their patients, it’s clear to see that these providers go above and beyond what their patients expect.

We received a ton of nominations this issue and thoroughly enjoyed reading the reasons readers feel that their physicians are the best in the medical industry. The Challenges of a Family Court Judge

Once a year Judge Giuliani makes the stress of being in a courtroom a fun, loving and exciting experience for children who are being adopted.

Leaving her black robes at home, this darling, kind and delicate blonde-haired judge transforms herself as a fairy godmother – costume, wand and all.

“I love celebrating the three major events for the children who are eager to have their forever family: Nevada Day, Halloween and a child united with loving parents,” says the joyous and energetic Giuliani. “When I take the bench and look out into the audience and see the beautiful children eager to finally have a safe home with loving parents, it is a sight that simply takes my breath away. With the wave of my magical wand I grant the children the gift of a family and from that day forward, they know they will have a parent, or parents, who will be there for them with permanency.”

n ideal world is where parents provide loving and stable homes for their children with emphasis on their safety and wellbeing. But when family dynamics take drastic turns – when parents are challenged with their own set of problems, when there is abuse or neglect – the protection, health and welfare of the children must be the priority and the courts must step in to help.

In Department K of the Eighth Judicial District Court of Las Vegas, Family Court Judge Cynthia Giuliani presides over many difficult cases, making critical decisions to protect Nevada’s children and families. She bears the enormous responsibility of placing children in foster care when the circumstances dictate, a decision that requires a balance that rightfully and dutifully weighs in favor of the needs of a child’s safety and care.

Judge Giuliani is adamant that the goal of the court is to reunite the child with their parents.

Unfortunately, there are some situations that make reuniting impossible when considering the best interest of the child. Luckily, for many abused and neglected children there is a healthier choice and hope for a better life, living with licensed foster care families.

“These are the occasions that make me pleased to be serving the people of Nevada as a Family Court Judge. It is truly a heartwarming experience seeing kids with gigantic smiles on their faces, knowing they are going home to a family who loves and adores them,” says Giuliani.

In matters of abuse and neglect, to provide temporary placement, long-term foster care, or adoption would not be possible if not for the dedication of the foster care system and the excellent foster care parents in our state. “I am proud and grateful to be a part of such a wonderful program and to work with devoted, caring foster families,” shares Giuliani.

We are fortunate to have many good families who have gone through a licensing process to open their homes to children in a time of their most critical need. A foster parent makes an enormous difference in a child’s life, at times developing into adoption, which Judge Giuliani says, “is the most rewarding part of my job.”

Bites and Stings of Our Creepy, Crawly Neighbors

A

variety of insects, spiders, snakes, and lizards inhabit Nevada, living amid the sand, rock, and adobe landscape.

However, only a handful of these critters are venomous. The guide below will help you know what to expect if you are bitten.

Ticks

The contrast of shiny black with a red hourglass is a distinguishing mark of a Black Widow Spider.

If disturbed, it will strike and within 20 minutes, symptoms of stomach pain, muscle cramps, weakness, and shaking will evolve. Bites can be lethal, therefore, emergency medicine should be obtained.

Gila Monsters The Gila Monster is the only poisonous lizard in the United States! A sighting of this onyxmasked, bumpy-skinned, nub-tailed reptile is infrequent. Yet, its vice-like bite can cause serious pain, swelling, nausea, vomiting, fatigue, faintness, sweating, chills, or fever. Gilas should be pried from the victim with a stick while providing footing for its legs. There is no antivenin, but severe bites may still need medical care.

The Rocky Mountain Wood Tick, is a teardropshaped, blood-sucking parasite of Northern Nevada. It is commonly found in grass, trees, shrub, or leaf piles. Although infection with Lyme Disease is low here in Nevada, this type of tick does carry Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever.

This arachnid can sense your presence and will cause a painless bite on hidden regions of the body – and can feast there for days. Bites may produce no symptoms, however, they may also produce a red, painful rash. Remove ticks with tweezers and seek medical attention if symptoms or target rash occur.

Spiders Spiders are a common inhabitant of dark, dry places like garages, storage units, and outdoor debris. Two types of native arachnids can cause a lethal bite. The Desert Recluse Spider camouflages a mocha bodice with a violin-shaped back. Two to eight hours after its bite, expect a red blister or sore that heals over several weeks, if mild. Severe symptoms may induce fatality which occurs most often in children, thus, it’s best to seek emergency care.

Scorpions Bark Scorpions are common in Nevada and dwell inside walls, garbage bins, wood piles, shoes, and bedding. They will cause an electric strike if disturbed and symptoms like tingling, numbness, nausea and vomiting may persist for up to three days. Symptoms can be moderate for most but serious for children or those who are allergic to the venom. For this reason, medical attention is recommended.

Snakes Nevada Rattlesnakes are a sandy colored venomous breed that slither among the crags or brush of the desert. Rattling is not guaranteed before a strike, but a bite may cause pain, tingling, numbness, swelling, bruising, weakness, nausea, or vomiting. This potentially lethal bite requires an immediate Emergency Room visit.

Danger Signs For correct antivenin creature identification is important, so snap a cell phone picture if possible. As a general rule, if you feel feverish, disoriented, nauseous, experience vomiting, numbness, hives, severe swelling, muscle cramps, difficulty breathing, or seizures from any type of bite, it’s important to seek emergency medical treatment immediately.

e all want smooth, beautiful skin – the kind of result you feel after an amazing facial – but have you ever considered dermaplaning?

Dermaplaning can be a scary concept when you consider a 10-gauge surgical scalpel is used on your face during this procedure. Yikes! However, if put your fears aside you’ll be on your way to some of the cleanest and clearest skin you have ever enjoyed.

One of the many benefits of this procedure can be the elimination of fine wrinkles because of the increased collagen production that occurs, creating a smoother complexion that can last up to 6 months. Side effects of aging and hormonal changes can cause facial hair to develop, otherwise known as peach fuzz. This annoying side effect is eliminated through dermaplaning and much safer than alternative methods, although this is not the main function of this type of treatment.

Those of us who have tried this procedure can attest to the successful removal of dead skin cells that have built up over time on your face. Once these cells are removed you’ll be amazed at how well your skin care products and makeup perform for you. A well-balanced skin maintenance regimen will be more effective and your makeup will glide on without the barrier of those nasty dead cells.

Just remember, this can be an effective and very beneficial treatment, but you should always do your homework beforehand and find a skilled professional. Costs typically range from $75 to $150 and up, and are usually offered at medi spas rather than a salon or spa. MV

1. Eat on Small Plates.

65% of North Americans are overweight or obese. This is because huge meal portions are considered the norm – especially when we eat out, we want to get our money’s worth.

The price you pay to lose weight or the price of having weight-related health issues, far exceeds the price of a meal. Instead of eating the entire, huge portion, ask for a side plate and take the rest home for you to eat later on in the day or the week.

2. Exercise Is Inevitable.

If your excuses prevent you from finding the time to exercise, try other options until your motivation or schedule changes. Don’t try to park up front in a parking lot when you go shopping. Park at the very end and walk.

Whenever you have the option to take an elevator, use the stairs instead. Those two options alone will definitely get your heart rate up.

Local Family Grateful for Support from our Community

ecember of 2015 changed our lives forever. We learned our 5-year-old daughter had kidney cancer. While we were scared, shocked and worried, we gathered our strength, love and positive attitude and plunged forward, never looking back.

In a period of 72 hours an amazing medical team was put together for our daughter – we never asked for the assistance, it was simply provided to us. The support was beyond amazing, it was a true blessing. Through our pediatrician, Dr. Laura Weidenfeld of Sunshine Pediatrics, we were provided with a specialist, Urologist Dr. Waldo Phang of Children’s Urology Associates, to meet with immediately. From there Dr. Phang created our cancer-fighting medical team, with Oncologist, Dr. Alexandra Walsh of Children’s Specialty Center, and Pediatric Surgeons, Dr. Kelly Kogut and Dr. Nicholas Fiore of Pediatric Surgery Associates. Honestly, these individuals are the best of the best and right here in Nevada!

As our daughter went through major surgeries, chemotherapy, radiation, hospital visits, scans, ultrasounds, tests, blood transfusions, etc., we encountered people and organizations in Las Vegas we never knew, or at least never thought we would be personally using the services of, or seeking advice/receiving encouragement and love from. We consider all those who

touched our lives – even if for just minutes, days, months, or years – as part of our team, our family. In our 10 years as residents of Las Vegas, we have always been involved with the community, but we never knew the community would reach out to us. Summertime Dreaming

ately, I have been dreaming about the past.

Living in the 80’s was such a great time for me. As I shopped for new summer clothes it made me think how much easier it was to look amazing in the 80’s. Clothes were fashioned with bright colors of teal blue, bright yellow, and fuchsia that popped and brightened our faces.

Women wore panty hose that could mask imperfections, as did the length of our skirts with nothing above the knee…and yes, I wore panty hose during the Las Vegas summers and I didn’t die from the heat. The women’s suits designed with padding in the shoulders gave us the look of being wider at the top, not at the bottom.

Women’s hairstyles were feminine, soft and professional – they were easy to style and hair care was far simpler. We had plenty of hair colors to choose from and they did not include pink, blue, green, or purple. Wow, I am beginning to sound like my mother!

While it is easy to daydream about summers past, what I love even more is the waking summertime dream I have every day, living in a city where the sun almost always shines. We were created to grow and expand and the only way we can do that is by moving and changing. Find the amazing things in the summer of 2017 – and may all your summertime dreams be bright! MV

Putting Safety First for Seniors

We understand how important a feeling of safety is to our residents and their loved ones. While providing the best in customized care for our residents, we also provide support and education for families.

June is home safety month and we would like to give you a few tips on how you can help to keep your loved ones safe. Basic safety inspections should cover items such as fall prevention, fire and kitchen safety, emergency response systems, and home security. According to the CDC one out of three older people [those 65 and older] falls each year. With a few minor home adjustments, you can rest easy knowing the likelihood of your loved one suffering a fall injury has been decreased. An important first step toward preventing falls at home is to remove anything that could cause a trip or slip while walking. Stumbling on pet bowls, electrical or phone cords, excessive clutter, small furniture or small rugs can all cause you to fall. Be sure to arrange furniture so that there is a wide and clear walkway around the home and install handrails if necessary or where possible.

Kitchen safety is something that you will need to review with your loved ones often as their abilities might change naturally with the aging process or with a change in their prescribed medications. Make sure that smoke and carbon monoxide detectors are installed and in good working order. Other basic safety measures include using a microwave instead of a stove, ensuring the kitchen is lighting is adequate, never leaving food that is cooking unattended and keeping a fire extinguisher handy.

If an emergency does occur in the home, do you have a plan in place for retrieving help? Always keep a list of emergency phone numbers in an easily accessible location (or two). Be sure the information is written in large print that can be read easily if you are in a rush. Important numbers include poison control, healthcare providers and family or friends. There are also many options for personal emergency response providers that can save your loved ones’ lives in a dire situation.

Your front door should have dead bolts installed and doors should remain locked whether you’re home or not. Most of us grew up in a time where it was common to leave your front door unlocked, but it is now important to make home security a habit. Other general safety guidelines to follow should include leaving a spare key with a neighbor you can trust in case you are ever locked out, never open the door to a stranger (if they are a sales or repair person, then you should call their company to verify their intentions), lastly don’t let people know when you are away from your home (through social media or otherwise) as this can make your home an easy target.

Take the time to make sure those you love are safe. As we get older we may take safety for granted and this is no time to forget the easy rules for keeping our homes safe. Other factors such as a change in our physical abilities as well as medications prescribed by healthcare professionals can also lend to potentially unsafe situations. Being alert and prepared is the best way to approach home safety. We strive to ensure that our residents live at their highest level comfort and security. Preserving the Generation of Today for a Better Tomorrow

Sadly, the incidence of youth homelessness is growing with stories like Dessirae’s all too common. There were more than 14,000 homeless students enrolled in Clark County schools during the 2015-2016 school year. But there is hope through the efforts of Nevada Partnership for Homeless Youth, the most comprehensive nonprofit service provider for homeless youth in Southern Nevada.

“Homeless youth are different from homeless adults because young people become homeless with little or no work experience or life skills, and experience high levels of criminal victimization, including sexual exploitation and labor trafficking,” said Arash Ghafoori, NPHY executive director. “That’s why our availability and outreach to these kids is critical, before they fall into a lifetime of poverty, abuse, and neglect and become tomorrow’s homeless adults.” NPHY provides immediate survival needs ­— food, clothing, shelter ­­— in a safe, supportive environment and fosters a path to self-sufficiency. Programs include: Outreach, Safe Place Mobile Crisis Intervention (round-the-clock assistance for youth in crisis), Operation Go Home Family Reunification, Drop-In Center, Emergency Shelter, and Independent Living Program.

NPHY relies on community support through monetary and supply donations, advocacy and volunteerism. Fast food restaurant and grocery store gift cards are always needed to provide hot meals for kids on the streets without access to a stove or microwave oven. Volunteer Adventures include assembling sack lunches and hygiene packs, cooking and serving meals, conducting outreach, beautification and restoration projects, and more. Volunteers also are needed to teach fitness, music, art, and cooking classes, and assist with marketing, special events coordination, and IT and technology. Programs can be customized for corporate and other groups’ needs, interests, sizes, and schedules.

“Youth homelessness is a growing crisis in Southern Nevada, and we couldn’t help as many of these kids without community support,” said Ghafoori.

“Homeless youth are often invisible because they look like other kids, often staying

out of sight and not wanting to advertise their homeless status, so many people just don’t realize how huge this problem is. But there are many ways to help, and it really does make a difference in their lives.”

essirae endured years of abuse at home until being kicked out by her father, without a sweater or shoes, with no place to go.

She slept on the streets for a few nights and then resorted to couch surfing. Always a good student, her school counselor noticed a difference and referred her to Nevada Partnership for Homeless Youth, where she received shelter, counseling and assistance. Dessirae subsequently graduated from high school, attended college, obtained a full-time job and permanent housing, and has become a homeless youth advocate.

NPHY is currently expanding the Drop-In Center, its anchor facility near UNLV, and was recently awarded two federal grants totaling $825,000 to expand critical programs for homeless youth when they are most vulnerable. One grant increases the Drop-In Center hours, and doubles NPHY emergency shelter capacity, creating four new emergency shelter beds for runaway and homeless youth under age 18. The 21 additional service hours each week allow NPHY to be open during critical hours, before and after school, and on Saturdays. The other grant enhances community collaboration to build and operate a best practice mentor service program for girls and boys, including lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and questioning youth who are at risk for, or are victims of, commercial sexual exploitation and domestic sex trafficking.

riday breakfast: egg burrito and half a banana with almond butter – and coffee, of course. It’s a fulfilling way to start my day and a reminder that I deserve a good start because almost 6 months after having a baby, I’ve seen diet and exercise success – losing almost 30 pounds – by saying YES! Y: Yoga, E: Eating Right, S: Support System.

Yoga: Right after my son’s birth, I needed a “transition” work out, something to ease into postnatal life. Yoga was the gentle, yet strengthening, routine my body craved; constant core exercises helped me regain torso strength that was much needed after supporting a baby for 10 months. However, yoga is just one example. Perhaps the answer for you may be walking, dancing or Pilates.

Eating Right: It’s easier said than done when you’ve been consuming a few extra calories for your baby, but sticking to smaller, more frequent meals keeps me satisfied and aware that baby weight doesn’t roll off without discipline. My goto meal: chicken, vegetables and rice – healthy fats and few added sugars.

Support System: Thankfully, my husband eats the same thing and as a personal trainer, he’s been invaluable, as a guide and support. Find the same support by leaning on a friend or a relative who can motivate you while holding you accountable. So say YES to your success and if you try the steps above, let me know how you did!

Johnny now returns to Chef Charlie Palmer’s longstanding Las Vegas institution, where he spent ten years of his early career as a sous chef.

Johnny’s time in professional kitchens spans nearly his entire life, starting at the age of 12 in his mother’s restaurant in Flint, Michigan. Since then, he has cooked in prestigious Las Vegas and West Coast restaurants, including Michael Mina’s XIV in Los Angeles, Eiffel Tower Restaurant at Paris Hotel and Casino, Rick Moonen’s RM Seafood, and farm-to-table restaurant Root 246, among others. His unique ability to create and curate menus of varying styles and concepts led Johnny to flourish in Sin City, where has accumulated accolades such as, “Rising Star Chef” by Wine Spectator, a “Top Chef de Cuisine”

by Las Vegas Life Magazine, and “Best Pop Up” by Vegas Seven for his Sunday Supper series at MTO Cafe, the fast casual concept he created in 2013.

Johnny joined the team at Aureole in late summer 2016, where he is working side-by-side with Chef Palmer to re-conceptualize and redesign the nationally acclaimed restaurant to create a modern tasting table experience, with menus designed in Palmer’s signature bold, American style.

FREE RECIPE! Raclette Fondue

Seasonal Crudite (serves 4-6) Ingredients: 1 bunch tri-colored carrots (peeled and quartered lengthwise) 1 cup tri-colored cauliflower florets (quartered) ¼ cup shaved radishes (mandolin) Finely chopped chives 1 tsp. olive oil ¼ tsp. espelette spice Preparation: In a mixing bowl, combine ingredients. Warm on a sheet tray 300 degrees 10 minutes.

Reserve chives for garnish.

Fondue Ingredients: 1cup Riesling ½ cup gruyere, swiss or raclette cheese 1 tbsp. water 1 tbsp. cornstarch Preparation: Mix cornstarch and water thoroughly, then set aside. In a sauce pot. reduce the wine by half.

Whisk in cheese until smooth. Add cornstarch mixture and whisk until sauce thickens and coats the back of a spoon. Pour hot fondue over plated crudité. Enjoy!

here are hundreds of commercial swimming pools and spas throughout the Las Vegas Valley in our resorts, municipalities, apartments, and HOAs. Every major resort on the strip has a “party pool”. Las Vegas’s commercial pools have some of the most difficult conditions in the country with our extreme heat and heavy bather loads. These conditions can push the filtration and chemical systems to their limits, which can result in cloudy, unsafe water.

How does VivoAquatics manage to keep these pools sparkling clean and refreshing all year ‘round?

As a commercial swimming pool management company, we bring innovation and technology to the industry to keep water chemistry on point and safe for its users. The greatest misconception is that commercial swimming pool maintenance and water chemistry can be compared to that of a backyard pool. That is definitely not the case. Commercial pools in Las Vegas can have thousands of swimmers a day, each one having an effect on water chemistry. A backyard pool may only use a couple of pounds of chlorine a week, whereas a commercial pool could potentially use more than ten times that amount in just one day.

VivoPoint will send notifications to assigned users in the event of anything becoming unbalanced or

ummer is quickly approaching and many of us will experience a drop in productivity on the job because of the heat. While many families and individuals are taking their vacations during the summer season, some of us will still have to go to their jobs counting down the time before they can leave. Instead of embracing the sunny warm weather, the summer slump will leave many of us feeling too drained and exhausted to do anything after work. Below are some quick fixes to increase your energy and boost your performance while at work.

Keep on Walking Sitting idle at your desk can result in your sluggish state. Try taking mini breaks when you have the chance. A quick walk or taking your lunch outside can get you out of your slump. The more you move around at work, the more active you will be. The hours would seem to go much faster if you are gradually changing your work area.

Bring in Some Natural Lighting Brighten your office space by opening up your shades and windows. Having an office that is dark and dreary will make you sleepy. Also add some greenery to make your office vibrant and lively. Flowers or a small plant are strongly recommended.

Take a Staycation Take full advantage of your weekends by embarking on short trips to Red Rock Canyon, Mount Charleston or Lake Mead. If that is too far, book a stay at one of the many Las Vegas resorts on the strip. adelyn Feller, a sultry songwriter and musician, is not just your ordinary lounge singer. Her passion for music began at an early age. Growing up in a musical family, she was always surrounded music of various genres. Influenced largely by her godfather, who was a showroom conductor at the Riviera for 32 years, she was instantly drawn to the “Old Vegas” music scene. As the years passed and she honed her musical abilities, she developed her own sound reflective of the Rat Pack era. She has performed in Vegas for many years, as is known throughout the valley as Dame Madelyn. As her musical prowess has grown, she has reached national acclaim and is soon to debut her first album. Her team is comprised of top notch talents who are renowned nationwide.

She attributes her success to her co-performers, family, and - most importantly - fans. “I could not do what I do without the support of these people - many of whom have followed me state-to-state.”

Madelyn says that the mission of her music is to unite and uplift people. She attests to the impact that surrounding herself with positive people has had on her life, and states that she hopes to bring that light to her audience, and to the world.

She also aims to unify different cultures, ages and races by combining elements of many different musical genres. She is passionate about music in all of its forms, and wants to offer something new and appealing to all types people, with all types of musical tastes. Although there are many noteworthy qualities of Madelyn’s - her striking beauty, her unique sound - perhaps the most obvious and endearing is her genuine love of people. Something that is rarely seen, it is instantly noticed in Madelyn. Her dedication to being a light in a world that can often seem so dark is what makes her stand out from the thousands of talented musicians and performers worldwide.
