Festival Park

and its COMMUNITY VALUE

Neighborhood parks attract and connect people of all ages and backgrounds who share a desire to improve their environment and are proud of where they live. They are vital community assets where young people can grow and learn through leisure and have interaction with nature. They also offer us the perfect combination of fun and education, and are a place of tranquility and enjoyment, for both adults and children.

Deltona is a city surrounded by parks and there is one that children love: Festival Park, adopted by Steve Maggio and his family, is situated across five acres. Nestled among the calm landscapes of Deltona, this park is the city’s faithful commitment to promoting a flourishing and inclusive community spirit.

One of the defining features of Festival Park is its picturesque setting with stunning views of the lake and surrounding natural beauty. Visitors can relax and reconnect with nature, while children have a safe space to play. The strategic location of the park is important because it is located next to Walmart, a wellknown and visited business. Childhood is a holistic process, unique to each child. Sometimes it is difficult for a child to learn efficiently in a classroom. But parks offer hands-on learning experiences to address the needs of children with different learning styles. Festival Park has a lot to offer all ages, such as the playground, the miniature zip line for children from ages 5 to 12 years old, the “TriRunner”, where children can spin in circles on swing seats, as well as many other things to explore.

Ultimately, Festival Park embodies the essence of Deltona’s vibrant community spirit. It serves as a meeting place for people from all sectors of society, and different ages come together to celebrate, connect and create lasting memories in an inclusive environment.

Festival Park is located at 191 Howland Blvd.

ASSISTED LIVING WITH LOVE

Cultivating Compassionate Care for Seniors

My Deltona Magazine Staff

It’s no secret that there is a growing demand for assisted living facilities in the U.S. to serve those who require help with daily tasks and healthcare services. According to the National Center for Assisted Living, in Florida alone, almost 3,000 assisted living communities serve 114,000 of our elderly. Sixty-five percent require help with bathing and forty-seven percent have been diagnosed with dementia or Alzheimers.

The statistics are dismal as we try to care for our aging population. Yet, at the heart of “assisted living with love” is treating each resident, not just as a patient, but as a valued individual worthy of attention, respect, and affection. It requires understanding that incorporating love and compassion into daily interactions protects their dignity and enhances their quality of care.

Meaningful Connections

The “assisted living with love” approach prioritizes individualized care plans by catering to each resident’s unique needs and preferences. Whether assisting with daily activities, medication management, or companionship, every aspect is infused with empathy and understanding.

Research indicates that seniors in environments characterized by love and compassion experience better emotional wellbeing. A study published in the Journal of Clinical Nursing found that a nurturing environment can significantly reduce loneliness and depression among elderly residents.

It has also been found that a sense of belonging and emotional support is linked to slower cognitive decline. The American Journal of Geriatric Psychiatry reported that social connections and emotional support are protective against dementia and cognitive impairment.

Seniors thrive when they feel connected to others and engage in meaningful activities. Opportunities for camaraderie, from group outings and recreational activities tailored to their interests, are essential. The goal is to create a supportive environment where residents can form friendships.

Healthy Interactions

Promoting holistic well-being is central to “assisted living with love.” Love and kindness benefit mental and emotional health and have tangible effects on physical health. Studies have shown that supportive, compassionate care environments can lead to lower blood pressure, reduced risk of cardiovascular disease, and overall improved physical health.

Yoga, meditation, art therapy, and music sessions create a sense of purpose. Simple gestures like holding a hand, offering a listening ear, or sharing a heartfelt conversation also make a positive difference for someone navigating the challenges of aging.

Loving Environments

Many seniors find the transition to assisted living challenging, affecting their sense of identity and independence. However, research indicates that assisted living communities emphasizing compassionate care and involvement in meaningful activities can facilitate easier adaptation and promote a sense of autonomy and purpose.

By embracing the “assisted living with love” approach, we can ensure that seniors receive the care and support they deserve and enrich their lives with dignity, respect, and, above all, love.

DELTONA FUN: FAMILY AND OUTDOORS IN DELTONA

Outdoor adventures with the family create some of the most cherished memories. Luckily for us, there’s no shortage of experiences in Deltona. Throw some sunscreen and snacks in a bag and load up the kids-here’s a few of our favorite ways to enjoy the great outdoors without ever leaving the city.

Boating

A day on the water is a wonderful way to enjoy Deltona’s outdoors. Whether your boat has a motor or a paddle, there are several places you can bring your vessel. Lake Gleason Park, a one-acre park, is adjacent to Lake Gleason, which is named after world-famous comedian, Jackie Gleason. The park gives the public access to a boat launch into Lake Gleason. A picnic area, pavilion and playground (for ages 5 to 12) are available to the public as well. You can also enjoy boating on the lakes at Audubon Park and Festival Park. Audubon Park features a fishing pier, making it convenient for water enthusiasts to enjoy these activities.

Fishing

Even without a boat, you can take the family out for a day of fishing at one of the awesome fishing piers at Audubon Park, Campbell Park and Dupont Park, which is home to our Annual Kid’s AllAmerican Fishing Derby. Kids under 16 don’t need a freshwater fishing license and neither do Florida residents who are 65+. For the rest of us who want to give it a try before purchasing a license, there are free Florida fishing days coming up June 8-9, 2024.

12 MY DELTONA MAGAZINE SPRING 2024 EDITION

Hiking

There are plenty of opportunities to get some fresh air and exercise while hiking in Deltona’s beautiful natural settings. There are three trails at the Lyonia Environmental Center where you may even get to spot the beautiful Florida scrub jays. Some of the other great hiking and walking trails in the area can be accessed from Tom Hoffman Park, Timber Ridge Park, Campbell Park, and Audubon Park.

The Splash Pad

The splash pad at Wes Krile Park is one of the best ways to cool down on a hot summer day in Deltona. Starting May 13th, the splash pad will be open on weekends from 10am6pm. Beginning May 30th, the splash pad will be open Tuesday-Sunday.

The Skate Park

If your outdoor fun involves wheels, you’ll love Lake Butler Skate Park. Bring out the bikes or skates and enjoy the cement street course. There are designated days and times for bikes and skates to use the course so that both activities aren’t happening simultaneously. Check out deltonafl. gov for the most up to date schedule.

Playgrounds

Head out to one of Deltona’s many playgrounds for a day full of swinging, sliding, and climbing. A few you must check out are Dwight Hawkins Park, Firefighters Memorial Park, Manny Rodriguez Park, Timber Ridge Park, Wes Krile Park and Tom Hoffman Park. Dewey O. Boster Park & Sports Complex even has an ADA accessible playground. The Keysville Dog Park also offers a playground with a wheelchair accessible swing and two separate fenced areas for the furry members of your family.

Wildlife Interactions

Any of Deltona’s trails and waterways offer amazing opportunities for wildlife spotting. Wildlife sightings can’t be planned though, and that’s part of what makes it special when you do see one of the city’s wild residents. However, if you want to guarantee animal interactions, you may want to plan a private tour at 101 Paws & Claws. This sanctuary and educational facility is a forever home to many animals and your little animal lover may even have a chance to feed a goat, raccoon, fox, lemur, or capybaras. Guided tours are about 1-1 ½ hours long and you’ll need to book in advance.

With all the exciting outdoor activities in Deltona, you’ll certainly keep the kids busy! Not only will you enjoy the best family time ever, but many activities are totally free, thanks to the City of Deltona.

Family Health Source Dental: Committed to the Highest Quality of Children’s Dental Care

Maintaining excellent dental hygiene is vital for children, ensuring not only a bright and beautiful smile but also laying the foundation for a healthy future. Good oral habits, established from an early age, can prevent several problems such as cavities, gum disease, and bad breath, which are not just uncomfortable but can significantly affect a child’s self-esteem and overall health.

Research has established a connection between oral hygiene and serious health conditions, including heart disease and diabetes, underscoring the importance of dental care from a young age. Teaching children to brush their teeth at least twice a day with fluoride toothpaste is crucial. Brushing effectively removes plaque, a sticky film of bacteria that, if left unchecked, leads to tooth decay and gum disease. Moreover, incorporating flossing into their daily routine cleans the spaces between teeth and along the gum line—areas a toothbrush might miss—thereby preventing cavities and gum inflammation.

Regular dental check-ups, recommended at least once every six months, play a critical role in maintaining children’s dental hygiene. These visits allow for the early detection of potential issues and professional cleaning to remove plaque and tartar build-up. Coupled with a balanced diet low in sugary snacks and drinks, these practices contribute significantly to maintaining healthy teeth and gums in children.

At Family Health Source Dental, led by Dr. Leonel Torres, we are deeply committed to ensuring that every child receives the highest quality dental care. Our comprehensive services cater to all aspects of oral health for childrenincluding exams, x-rays, cleanings, fillings, sealants, and fluoride treatments. We are passionate about educating and empowering our young patients and their families to take proactive steps in managing their dental well-being, promoting preventive care, and fostering a positive outlook towards dental visits.

Understanding the importance of accessibility to quality dental care, we accept a wide range of insurance plans, including Medicaid. For families without insurance, we offer flexible selfpay options and sliding fee discounts, ensuring that no child is left behind when it comes to receiving the care they need for a lifetime of healthy and beautiful smiles. Prioritizing good dental hygiene from an early age is not just about fostering healthy smiles; it’s about nurturing healthy lives.

OMAYRA’S INSIGHTS ON Effortless Style and Confidence

Omayra La Bella embodies grace, intelligence, and creativity. She is a distinguished entrepreneur, international model, producer, influencer, and beauty pageant winner. Crowned Ms. Mundo Latina USA from 2019 to 2021 and Ms. Moda Universe International in 2021, Omayra exemplifies beauty and elegance. Because helping women be the best version of themselves is her mission- she shares fashion highlights, skincare tips, and inspirational thoughts in this article.

Trendy is Effortless

I’m excited to share that this year’s New York and Paris fashion trends are accessible to everyday women like you and me. We can easily bring a touch of glamour to our daily lives here in Seminole County. This season celebrates the extremes, from bold colors to the timeless elegance of a white dress. Charming rose prints and eye-catching metallics are also trendy.

Look for a revival of cozy denim outfits, chic leather jackets, and daring miniskirts. Neutral-toned suits, layers of sheer fabrics, fun color blocks, and classic country club styles are making a comeback as well.

In a delightful shift, comfort is key with the resurgence of flats over heels. Designers like Chanel, Prada, and Fendi champion this trend and affordable options are readily available. Flats, reminiscent of a ballet dancer’s effortless grace, are perfect for adding a slice of Parisian chic to our everyday wardrobe. Belts are once again the go-to accessory. With designs ranging from intricate beadwork to bold metallics to playful prints, belts elevate and personalize outfits.

Your nails are also a fashion accessory. This season’s fashion runways and magazine spreads featured models sporting neutral nail hues. Long oval-shaped nails or short, squared tips look fabulous with pearly white, light pink, mild beige, or gray tones.

These trends not only celebrate individual style but are also wonderfully adaptable to daily routines, proving that everyone can enjoy a bit of runway glamour.

Skincare is Essential

No wellness routine is complete without sufficient skincare. Many products on the market contain fake ingredients and other extraneous materials that should never be applied to the skin. One of my top wellness recommendations for spring is to eliminate these products and adopt a more natural approach.

Avoid products containing alcohol or identify water as the primary ingredient. Your skin may feel tight, dry, and itchy after using them. Natural products are like nutritious smoothies for the skin. Seek full, plant-based components such as plant extracts, tea, and aloe. These are gentle and nourishing, enhancing the appearance of your skin. I highly recommend checking out my natural skincare brand, “INNATA – Inspired by Omayra La Bella.” www.innataskincare.com

Confidence is Beauty

Since women are God’s most exquisite creations, I enjoy encouraging them, especially those who believe their current course in life prevents them from realizing and achieving their aspirations. Even though we are diverse, we are all perfect and beautiful because we are products of God.

Here are some inspirational thoughts to help you accomplish your goals.

• You must love yourself and believe that you are beautiful.

•Confidence exudes beauty; lack of confidence manifests as fear and insecurity. This is one of the biggest obstacles women face.

• You must believe in yourself and know that you can achieve your goals. You will encounter difficulties, criticism, and a lack of support from others, but that’s okay. It just means you are standing out and doing well.

• Regardless of your age, put blinders on and concentrate on what you desire. Keep trying until you achieve your goals. Remember, your goals have no boundaries; you are the only one who sets them.

•I will leave you with my signature quote: “A self-confident woman is her own unique definition of beauty.”

Hip replacement surgery has come a long way. Gone are the days of long hospital stays and larger incisions thanks to the innovative Mako hip replacement procedure. Using the most technologically advanced robotic arm system, the Mako hip replacement process is guided by sophisticated imaging and machine learning technology.

First, a personalized surgical plan is created for each patient well before the procedure. Using a 3D model of the patient’s hip joint, surgeons plan the placement and alignment of the hip implant before making any incisions. This preoperative planning significantly enhances the accuracy of the procedure, minimizing complications and maximizing implant longevity.

During the surgery, the Mako robotic arm provides real-time feedback. This dynamic guidance ensures the implants are positioned with remarkable precision. The result is better functional outcomes and a reduced risk of postoperative complications like dislocation or leg length discrepancies.

Understanding Mako Hip Replacement Surgery: Precision for Enhanced Recovery

Thanks to the precision of the robotic system, Mako hip replacement surgery can be completed through the minimally invasive direct anterior approach. Smaller incisions mean less trauma to surrounding tissues and quicker healing time, with most patients returning home the same day as surgery. Plus, patients can look forward to improved joint stability, better range of motion, and a smoother rehabilitation process.

This technology, made possible through generous donations to Halifax Health – Foundation, is revolutionizing the way hip joint replacements are performed offering personalized planning and real-time guidance to revolutionize the way surgeons approach hip joint replacements. MEETING OUR NEIGHBORS

HELLO DEBARY!

Where Nature, History, and Community Thrive

Nestled from Deltona at only 8 miles away is the city of DeBary, known for its commitment to community connections and environmentalism. As Florida’s 12th Trail Town and a designated Tree City U.S.A., DeBary is a haven for outdoor enthusiasts, with over 600 miles of paved trails converging in the city.

The DeBary Hall Historic Site is a 19thcentury estate overlooking the St. Johns River. Once the mansion of Frederick DeBary, it is now a restored museum listed on the “National Register of Historic Places.” Visitors can explore the 10-acre site, including the oldest intact building in southwest Volusia County, which hosted two US presidents and a former king.

DeBary is home to the Gemini Springs Park, with its serene setting created by natural springs, and is certainly a Florida treasure. The Spring-to-Spring Trail, ideal for hiking and biking enthusiasts, connects various springs and offers scenic views. Lake Monroe Park, located by Lake Monroe on the St. Johns River, provides a tranquil escape for visitors to enjoy the waterfront.

For eco-tourism enthusiasts, St. John’s River Eco Tours offers the opportunity to continue to explore the protected areas

of the St. Johns River. Whether observing migratory birds and manatees during the winter or witnessing alligator hatchlings in the summer, these tours allow visitors to experience the natural beauty of Florida. The city also plans to transform Alexander Island into a tranquil park with recreational amenities and an educational center managed by the Aquatic Preserve Alliance of Central Florida.

One of DeBary’s latest attractions is the downtown Main Street project, a first of its kind for the city.  The downtown project will bring together residential, commercial, and mixed-use properties, including shops, restaurants, and live-work units. This vision has been in place for 20 years and is

exciting for the entire city. With DeBary’s population expected to grow, DeBary Main Street will provide essential amenities and foster connections for all residents. The development will be within the SunRail station, serving as a trail hub for easy access to the downtown area. City leaders anticipate a significant economic impact, and construction is set to begin this year, with Phase I expected to be completed by 2025.

DeBary offers a blend of natural beauty, rich history, and a close-knit community. With its extensive trail system, diverse attractions, and commitment to environmental preservation, DeBary is another stop destination for those seeking an authentic Florida experience.

How Mako Works

Mako is an innovative solution for many suffering from painful arthritis of the knee or hip.

Scan. It all starts with a CT scan so your surgeon can know more about your anatomy.

Plan. The CT scan is used to create a 3D CT-based model of your joint. Your surgeon uses this 3D model to create a personalized surgical plan and assist your surgeon in performing your joint replacement procedure.

Mako Can. In the operating room, your surgeon follows your personalized surgical plan while preparing the bone for the implant. The surgeon guides Mako’s robotic arm within the predefined area, and Mako’s AccuStopTM technology helps the surgeon stay within the planned boundaries that were defined when the personalized preoperative plan was created.
