Remember those happy days, when the Fonz lived above the Cunninghams’ garage? Or more recently, the TV show Packed to the Rafters, where mum, dad, the adult kids and grandad have all ventured back home to live under the one roof? Pop culture has been addressing the dual-living concept for years, and it seems that Sunshine Coast home owners are now embracing it more and more. As our cover story shows, an ageing population, a generation of young people who just won’t (or financially can’t) leave home and a tricky global financial situation has caused the family home to swell, and home owners are solving the problem by simply adding an extra storey or building a granny flat on the other side of the pool. Moving in with the in-laws has never seemed so appealing, with many agents reporting an increase in inquiry for dual-living properties. It’s certainly easier than moving house, as prices on the Coast remain robust (see page eight for the figures). Happy days indeed.
