editor’s note

My Inspiration 101 Paul Welch just dropped by my office to chat. He keeps telling me he getting old, but I tell him to hush because if he is older than he was in 1976, when he was my art history instructor at Northwestern Michigan College, well then, so am I. Needless to say, catching up with this ebullient, ageless character is always a great blast from the past. I was 18 and half asleep when I sauntered into Paul’s first-hour Art History 101. Paul dimmed the lights and

clicked on the projector. The bulb’s glow gave way to the first slide, and Paul was off on a crazy, whirling, roadrunner-speed sweep of the artistic high points of the millennium. I woke up. It would be years before I completely understood that Paul was at the vortex of an epoch of art in Northern Michigan. Among other things, he and his colleagues were responsible for the college hiring the world-famous Bauhaus-founder Walter Gropius to design the Fine Arts Building. Of course, the decibel of passion that brought internationally acclaimed architecture to a (then) sleepy Midwest city reverberated far beyond those walls. Paul and his colleagues went on to inspire a legion of design talent in Northern Michigan—among them photographer John Robert Williams, sculptor Robert Purvis, illustrator Glenn Wolff and filmmaker Rich Brauer.

It occurs to me that the inspiration I gained from experiencing Epoch Art in Northern Michigan is reflected in the strong residential architecture and design that we feature on the pages of Northern Home & Cottage. In this magazine, for instance, a Craftsman-inspired home, a classic cottage vernacular and an Asian-influenced Modernist house share the pages. And this being our landscape issue, you’ll also see how great design stretches out the door. Which means, you’ll see green in our photographs. Yep, green; bold, vibrant, pulsating-with-life green. As he was getting ready to leave, Paul blurted a Bronx cheer at the long, cold winter. I reminded him that spring always comes; beautiful, inspirational, artful, Northern Michigan spring.

The Drosts’ son, Dustin, built the home’s two magnificent fireplaces. The rocks are handpicked fr the Great Lakes region. Fred Franchino, of Horton Bay, fabricated the fireplace pocket doors. As protection to the Lake Charlevoix water quality, the Drosts forwent a lawn in favor of native plantings that include carex grass, bulrush, nine bark, marsh marigold and cardinal flower. knew she could help them capture the feel they wanted of a venerable, early 1900s cottage. The finished product is a tan-trimmed-in-black shingle-style home with Craftsman accents. In keeping with the lot size, the home is not massive—though anchored in stone and rising three levels, it feels very substantial. On the interior, elements like carefully crafted woodwork, oiled white oak floors with a French bleed accent and formal cabinetry combine to parlay the feeling of a fine cottage with Victorian and Craftsmen influences. The home exudes careful detail, right down to oldfashioned cast iron pipes the Drosts opted for because of the way they block the sound of water rushing through them.

Painting & Decorating

Set above Lake Charlevoix, the master bedroom feels like a luxurious stateroom. The beds are from restoration hardware, as is most of the furniture in the home. The Jason Spa Tub has an in-tub heater to keep the water warm—giving new meaning to the expression soaking up the view!

One of the most enjoyable parts of the construction process was the way Bob’s longtime friends in the Northern Michigan construction business took a personal interest in the home. Builder and woodworker Andre Poineau made it a point to drop by from time to time to check on the process, following up with suggestions for Bob. Jeff Collins of Glennwood Builders provided guidance and painting. The couple found a deal on the stunning cabinetry thanks to a tip. “It was exactly what I’d wanted,” says Diane. The rest of this home’s story is about how Bob’s talented landscaping crew (that includes his son Dustin) did a large part of the actual homebuilding. Bob still marvels at the way his crew managed complicated tasks like installing the 100 galvanized pilings that the home sits on and fashioning a barrel vault in the ceiling of the master bedroom to mimic the shape of a window that arches over a picture-perfect view of Lake Charlevoix. The Drosts have been in the home for two years—time filled with small, daily luxuries like going to sleep in a bedroom that feels as if it’s floating over Lake Charlevoix; Sunday breakfasts at a table situated so that the waterscape seems to pour out across the window; watching the annual Boyne Thunder high-performance boating event from their balcony. It’s probably no surprise that a home created by a cast of people who have mostly spent their entire lives around Lake Charlevoix embraces its setting in such a comfortable, classic way. This home built on rock, lives very well indeed. Elizabeth Edwards is managing editor of Northern Home & Cottage. FIND RESOURCES FOR THIS HOME ON PAGE 21. Northern Home & Cottage

that overlook the rolling site and across the street to the bay. The homeowners wanted the house to feel a part of that natural beach landscape, to look settled-in and complete. Toward that end, they planned their construction budget to include professional landscape design and installation—something that Hanawalt says is often overlooked. “Any house building project begins with design. In starting construction, the designs begin to be realized, and spending also begins in earnest … Towards the end of the process, every homeowner experiences ‘check-writing fatigue.’ That's why it is so important at the beginning to reserve funds for three important elements: lighting, furniture and landscaping. The simplest house with these three elements done well, can be a beautiful house.” The homeowners chose Erick Takayama of Grand Traverse Organic Landscapes to add the finishing touch, and he did so with inspiration from the surrounding beach landscape. He aimed to design a beautiful but low-maintenance Northern Home & Cottage

woodchip paths. He filled in here and there with native evergreen trees and deer-resistant shrubs. Stones add structure to the open-feeling space, and everywhere there is texture. This becomes particularly important during the winter. “I find beauty in dormant plants, bark and twig color,” says Takayama. Summertime, though, there is not much work to do. A swath of lawn in the back requires a 10-minute mow, and there is the occasional mulch top-dressing and some pruning, but little if any watering is needed. Takayama’s team installed a drip irrigation system to help establish the landscape, but now it is only used on the mature plants during particularly dry spells.

Drifts of Lake Michigan beach stones connect the landscape to the flagstone foundation. Woodchip paths transition to flagstone and concrete pavers in the back. Beyond, the woods lies untouched, shady and wild. It’s as if the home and the road are simply pauses in the flow of landscape from forest to shore. A lovely statement, certainly, about building and living in Northern Michigan. Diane Kolak is a freelance designer and writer from Lake Ann.

When they aren’t on the beach, the Bratschies are gathered around the aggregate cement-topped island in the kitchen. Kate chose the colors of water, beach grass and sunsets for the glass-tile backsplash. The plate, made by the Bratschie children for their dad, reads: “Dad’s Carnivore Plate II.” The original plate burned in the fire
