When you’re a little kid, you don’t know how the simple act of building sand castles on the beach can have such a dramatic impact on your life. As I sit here gazing at what remains of this summer sunset over the lake, I can smell what must be the first night’s bonfire rising, and nostalgia nearly overwhelms me. Our family came “up north” in the summer like so many other families. For some of us kids, the water, the waves and the sand left impressions deeply ingrained in our consciousness. Over time, those feelings grew seductive enough to draw us back. I have never seen myself as the overly nostalgic type. But as I close my eyes while sitting here on the porch, it all comes racing back to me as an unforeseen gift. All the sights, sounds, and smells of those family vacations long ago swim through the warmth of a magnificent sunset.

I don’t know too many people who don’t dream of living on the water, imagining the wealth of moments that accompany a waterfront life: sipping morning coffee on a waterside

deck; refreshing morning dips; long, languid afternoons of boating or reading on the beach; a glass of wine as the sun dips, sending diamonds scattering across the water’s surface … It’s a pretty safe bet that moments like these are universally desired. But what kind of homes do we dream of building on the water? Now that is as varied as our personalities. In this issue we bring you two very different styles of dreams-come-true. The first is the cottage-industrial (yep, I just paired those two words!) look of Detroit-based designer Kyle Evans in the Leelanau Peninsula home that he shares with his partner Michael “Chet” Chetcuti. In beautiful contrast, we give you a look inside a classic Nantucket-style cottage—though imbued with a fresh twist on nautical that reads like a hip Dot & Bo take on a grand old theme. An important message in both of these homes is that if you finally find (or build) YOUR place on the water, you want to stay there as long as possible. That means a home that you can age in safely and comfortably. Which brings me to our third story, “Traditions on Walloon.” This is the tale of a designer who brought lovely, fresh thinking to the concept of aging-in-place to a home on Walloon Lake. The homeowners are happily living their waterside dream there—and will be for a very long time.

If this Northport cottage looks familiar, well … you might have seen it on our pages in 2006. Or perhaps you saw it in person, post-expansion, on our Home Tour in 2015. Chetonka, as the cottage has been dubbed by owners Michael “Chet” Chetcuti and partner Kyle Evans, has an enduring, magnetic appeal that just keeps us coming back for more. The home pulls us in with a timeless blend of eras and styles. The casual look may appear effortless, but it required very nuanced curating. Adding to the appeal, the look is captivating but elusive, defying typical style definitions and labels. talented design genius who continues to build the cottage’s distinctly Northern Michigan style. Just as the decor constantly evolves on the bluff-top site overlooking the Manitou Islands, so does the cottage itself. The couple recently added a second structure and converted the original non-winterized 1930s cottage to a summer kitchen and “mess hall,” where a stream of lucky guests enjoy Chet’s meals planned around local, seasonal food. Entertaining is Chetonka’s raison d’être, and every design decision complements a life of laid-back enjoyment of the outdoors. These long-time cottagers are blessed with a natural sense of style, but Kyle says there are important principles that guide design decisions at Chetonka. Chief among them is blending the old and the new, and letting each influence the other. For example, when building the new cottage, the men used high-efficiency SIPs (Structural Insulated Panels) but faced them with a cement-block veneer to match the walls Northern Home & Cottage

The blend keeps the space from ascribing rigidly to any one style or archetype. In addition, Kyle strategically placed the reflective materials to subtly reflect the views for a sense of being surrounded by nature even when indoors. Outdoors, however, is the summer gathering place of choice, where views of woods and water envelop the small compound. To enhance the experience, Kyle applied similar principles to the landscaping design. Retaining walls made from naturally rusted Cor-Ten steel give a modern contrast to organically shaped stone pavers grown over with moss. Plantings soften the transition from old elements to new. Despite our three visits and repeated analyses, it’s not possible to turn the art of

In the great room of a stately white cottage, tucked under a red roof, there is a domino game in progress. Nearly every evening the game picks up where it left off the previous night, and never actually ends—although the two competitors, who play for money, settle up on New Year’s Day each year. It is all in fun, of course. This is that kind of home. The couple’s children and grandchildren come and go.
