DAVE SPECKMAN

Red Hot Landscapers! People often ask me how I find the homes we feature in Northern Home & Cottage. The truth is, there is no single answer. Like everything else we produce at MyNorth Media (Traverse Magazine, MyNorth Wedding, MyNorth.com ... the list goes on!), we get our inspiration from having conversations with folks inside and outside of the office, making phone calls to key people in whatever industry we are covering to see “what’s up?,” searching the internet for information, and yes, often enough from press releases. Our annual April landscape/outdoor living issue has been a tough nut to crack, however, because it seems that most landscapers operate under the radar—without websites, often without even a Facebook page. (Too busy shoveling?). And in the grand conversation about how a house was designed, built and furnished, sometimes the guys out in the dirt get forgotten. Last year we set out to help right that benign neglect by making a category for Best Landscaper on our Traverse Magazine Red Hot Best of Northern Michigan ballot. It seems folks do appreciate their landscapers after all because the names came pouring in! The three landscapers behind the projects you’ll read about in this issue were all part of those nominations. Jack Barnwell, of Barnwell Landscapes and Garden Services, who so carefully tends Mackinac Island’s gorgeous Craig Mawr estate was, in fact, our 2017 Red Hot Best winner for best landscaper. Read the story “An Approachable Oasis,” on page 26 and you’ll see why. The point is well made in this issue that our Northern Michigan landscapers aren’t just earthmovers. They are earth artisans. As you’ll see in this issue, they can make your yard look like a courtyard in an Italian farmhouse, build you an outdoor oven, make you your very own bocce court, reconstruct a Victorian garden (and disguise the modern amenities) and so much more. Yo, Northern Michigan landscapers! Throw down those shovels and take a bow!

THREE PROS TELL US WHAT’S HOT IN POOLS AND SPAS

By Elizabeth Edwards

Who: Tom Britton, owner of The Pool Doctor, based in Traverse City.

Who: Nicole Stephenson, manager of Larry’s Pool and Spa, based in Traverse City.

Over the course of 18 years in the business Tom has built and renovated a number of pools, but his primary focus is in service and repair of hot tubs and pools.

Nicole is the third generation of the Stephenson family to own or manage Larry’s Pool and Spa. Her grandparents Larry and Bev Stephenson built their first in-ground pool for themselves in Traverse City, back in 1968. That family fun quickly grew into a full-time business that has constructed hundreds of pools across Northern Michigan.

What’s hot in pools and spas? Alternative sanitizing—meaning non-toxic, chlorine free or low chlorine pool cleaning systems. Right now we are pursuing a system by Clear Comfort that uses an advanced oxidation process that destroys microbes. It also produces a residual level of hydrogen peroxide that means residential pools can often be chlorine free. It’s easier on the skin, respiratory health and on the environment than traditional chlorine treatments.

What’s hot in pools and spas? Homeowners are looking for different shapes and structures in their pools—not just the basic shallow end and deep end. People are also interested in game pools now—to play water volleyball and other games. So the center of the pool might be shallow enough for water volleyball but the ends would be deep enough for laps and flips at the end of the lane. More Trends!

trends! Who: Mike Rodes, part owner of Poolside, based in Traverse City. Seventeen years ago, Mike paired his background in sales with the skills of excavators Eric and Marv Weber, and Poolside was born. Some 300 pools later, installed from Cadillac to the Straits, the team has pool construction down.

What’s hot in pools and spas? Automation. Iphone interfaces and digital LCD displays. Our customers who are in Northern Michigan seasonally want to be able to dial in and turn up the temperature or check other settings. Also, people who live here like the option of turning up the temperature on their spa on their way home from work. Chemical automation is also becoming more popular. You used to only see it in commercial pools, but now we are installing it in residential ones. It’s a mechanized system that is constantly testing the water and keeping it balanced. It’s a time-saver for pool owners. Nobody wants to be dealing with testing the water and adding chemicals everyday. Another new popular product is Ultraviolet Light Bioshields. Pool water passes through the light shield and kills bacteria. Bioshields can reduce how much chlorine you use in the pool by up to 50 percent. 1776 M-37 South, Traverse City

ost travelers come home from Europe inspired to add the flavors and styles of the Old World into their lives. That’s what happened, in a big way, to Jim and

Marlys Manthei after a visit to Northern Italy in 2010, during which they toured 11th-century monasteries and medieval town centers. The couple was particularly struck by Italy’s stone structures—not surprising, since the two are partners in Rosetta Hardscapes, a Charlevoix-based manufactured-stone and landscape company. “We love the Old World aesthetic and the look of an old Italian courtyard where you eat outdoors surrounded by ancient walls,” Jim says.

“Giving the project an aged look was one of the primary goals,” agrees Cassio. To achieve that, the team went with a mixed-media approach by using clay, brick and black mortar to create high contrasts in texture and color. Old barn beams from the Mantheis’ property were used to hang string lights and also to serve as the base for a retractable, weatherproof cover. Other notable details include the Rumford-style fireplace that throws out powerful heat, and a roomy 10-seat table that Jim built. Both enabled the family to enjoy a very special Thanksgiving dinner out on the patio during a particularly warm November. The oven has an Italian clay dome and can reach temperatures of 850 degrees and above. Marlys and Jim use the oven to make all of their household bread, even in winter. “We bake 12 loaves at a time, baking every few weeks,” Jim says. Pizza is another favorite. “Anything you can do with a regular oven you can do in this oven.”

The couple uses the new outdoor space year round, hosting family get-togethers for their children and nine grandchildren. They’ve squeezed as many as 60 people into the space, utilizing the lower walls as extra seating and setting up extra tables when needed. “As long as it’s not covered in snow and ice we are out here—on cooler days we just move the table closer to the fire,” Jim says. And while they enjoy the deck any time of day, they admit to a soft spot for evening events. “It’s magical at night.” Khristi Sigurdson Zimmeth is an award-winning travel and home writer. kzimm@aol.com // Photos by Dave Speckman.

freshly renovated Mackinac Island cottage, Craig Mawr. (Read that story at MyNorth.com/CraigMawrCottage.) The cottage, which graces the island’s East Bluff, is a treasure of Victorian cottage architecture, with its two turrets, long, languid front porch, banks of mullioned windows and splendid carriage house and stable. Craig Mawr’s renovation has been widely recognized as historically meticulous, garnering an Honor Award from the Michigan chapter of the American Institute of Architects and the deep respect of Phil Porter, director of the Mackinac State Historic Parks: “They did a first-rate job. We hold it up as an example,” he says. .➤

Along with the cottage, the couple restored the splendid grounds, working with JJR, the landscape division of the Smith Group, based in Ann Arbor. Inspiration for the plan came from photos of the estate that date to early 1900s, provided by the Mackinac Island State Park and also from the Craig Mawr’s previous owners. The photographs revealed that there had once been a wading pool on the grounds, as well as a lawn tennis court—both of which lent inspiration to incorporate a lovely, natural-looking swimming pool and spa, and a putting green for David, who is an avid golfer. Originally there had been a fountain fashioned in the likeness of the Roman god of wine, Bacchus; it had been mounted on a stone wall and would have to be rebuilt. “As with the cottage, we tried to be true to the spirit and

n 1998, a young couple with three children and another on the way purchased a 1970s-era cottage on Torch Lake. The cottage was pretty basic then—a “cottage in the woods,” as

one of the now-adult sons remembers it. The place was cozy and little dark on the inside and had forest all around, and the family soaked up every moment they had together there. About five years ago, with the kids just about grown, the parents decided it was time renovate—and make more room for a family that was sure to expand in the coming years.

The new plans included a top-to-bottom, inside-out renovation. The only parts of the original home saved were two bathrooms and a bunkroom. “The homeowners and I worked together for well over a year before construction,” recalls Chery Dubay of Indesign, a design and build firm in Charlevoix. “Their vision was to have it be the perfect place for their growing and aging family to spend as much time together as possible.” The final design replaced the cramped kitchen (that had doubled as a pass-through from the front to back doors!) with a lovely new one and added three bedrooms and baths and a new master bedroom suite. The pièce de résistance is a tower outfitted with huge windows that take in the spectacular view of Torch Lake. The site, which begins with a steep driveway to the home, and then drops 25 feet to the beach, was one of the most challenging any of the contractors had ever worked on. It meant that the landscaper, Erick Takayama of Grand Traverse Organic Landscapes, needed to be involved from the get-go, figuring out where and how to stage his hardscape materials—given once the construction started he had no access by truck to the waterside of the home. Needless to say, creativity didn’t get lost in complications. As with the home’s interior, the homeowners were also very involved in the landscape design, and the desire to make a cottage for family gathering is manifest in three well-thought out zones: A fire-pit table on the deck that faces the water; a bocce court adjacent to a fire pit set within a low semi-circle brick wall on the street side of the home, and an area referred to as “the grotto” on the shaded north side of the home that features a patio with a trickling waterfall and carved boulder chairs, fabricated by Wicksall Masonry. ➤

The grotto, says Erick, was inspired by the homeowners’ determination to put the 15-foot strip of property between the home and the property line to creative use. The homeowners are wine aficionados and Erick thought it would be the perfect spot to enjoy a cool glass of wine on a hot day. This coming summer, the homeowners’ dream of a place for their growing family will come to fruition. One of their sons will marry his fiancée in the Torch Lake area. The pre-wedding festivities will include boating, bocce rivalries and s’mores around the fire pits at the cottage. All the things the family has always done together, on this first page of a new chapter of their life on Torch Lake. A PRIVATE BOCCE COU RT IS AN ADDED BON US TO SU MMER LIVING ON TORCH L AKE .

Backyard Bocce Gather friends and family for bocce (or pétanque, as they call it in France), a game that pairs nicely with Northern Michigan’s wine and hops country.

TO GET STARTED YOU’LL NEED:

THE HOW TO:

A court. If you don’t have the real thing, the flattest place in your yard or beach will work, marked out with foul lines. The pros play on a 13-by-91-foot court. But you can have plenty of fun on a court that is not as wide and is half as long.

• Underhand throws only. • Keep the ball and your body within the foul lines. • Knocking your own team’s balls, opponents’ balls and the pallina into different positions is part of the strategy.

A bocce set. Eight balls that are four different colors and a smaller target ball called a pallina or jack. You can find sets for as little as under $20 to over $100.

THE OBJECT:

Two teams. Teams can be one, two or four players. A coin toss. To determine which team tosses out the pallina. The drinks. A couple of chilled bottles of local rosé and white wines. Icy growlers of local microbrew will do, too.

To get your team balls as close to the pallina as possible. SCORING: Scoring is done each time all the balls have been thrown. Only the team with the ball closest to the pallina is able to score a point or points—one point for each ball that is closer to the pallina than is an opposing team’s ball.
