agency inc. Northern Michigan. Yup, it’s a pretty sweet part of my job. Over two decades, I’ve toured roughly 1500 of the region’s most dropdead gorgeous homes. Unlike other competing publications, the regular features that appear in Northern Home & Cottage are not pay-to-play—meaning builders, architects Call us today! (231) 271-3623 | www.bonek.com or anyone else can’t write a check and get their home featured. I select a Call us today! home, sometimes with input from my staff, and then the articles are created (231)271-3623 l www.bonek.com with no strings attached. I find the three houses featured in each of five issues a year (our October home tour issue works a bit differently) by browsing websites, following up leads, jotting down builders’ phone numbers from their signs on construction sites, and checking in regularly with architects, designers and builders who are stars in my digital rolodex. The homes often fall into my lap; sometimes not. Some homeowners are anxious about having their beautiful homes opened to the public eye. Other times the construction schedule hits a snag or we can’t get the home shot in time for the upcoming issue. But the biggest hurdle is that our criteria for choosing stories in Northern Home & Cottage is pretty rigid. While we will consider virtually any style, we look for homes that have something to say architecturally, and we try to mix it up each issue. Above all, we feature projects that don’t overpower their stunning Northern Michigan settings. This issue is a good example of how, occasionally, I really have to work it Complete Excavating Service to make it happen. The first home, interior designer Gretchen Diver’s renovated RESIDENTIAL & COMMERCIAL cottage in Suttons Bay, came together quickly (I fall hard for renovated cottages—keep the charm but add the modern amenities). But the other two Family Owned and Operated homes? My best laid plans kept falling through for one reason or another. As my deadline clock ticked, I called architect Ken Richmond (a perennial favorite • Basements • Septic Systems of ours). Turns out he’d just worked with Midlake Builders (another fave) on • Bulldozing • Land Clearing the renovation of a historic cottage on Glen Lake. Score! • Demolition • Land Filling One last slot to fill, and I was sweating. Typing “Help!” into the subject line, I emailed one of our best home photographers, Jacqueline Southby. She • Grading • Sand & Gravel replied with images of a gorgeous Shingle-style house on Walloon Lake—a • Top Soil • Water & Sewer home that fits both historically and aesthetically into its site. She’d just shot • Drain Fields Hookup it for Scott Kennard of Wentworth Builders—a builder we’ve worked with for • Snow Removal years and (like his clients) can’t say enough about. Eureka! The June/July For All Your Excavating 2022 issue of Northern Home & Cottage was complete. Now, on to August … Call Alpers Today!

Originally, Marcus Trombetta had envisioned white siding with black windows for the new home he calls Clarity House on Airbnb. While that combination is trending now, Trombetta wanted to make his own unique statement, so he took his color search out of the box and ended up giving his home a dark and vibrant blue exterior. While he’d figured the color would be a handsome contrast with the dark windows, what he didn’t count on, Trombetta says, is “how striking the dark blue is against the massive hardwoods and pines that surround the home.” The paint color’s name, Anchors Away, is no coincidence—Trombetta served in the U.S. Navy.

Ellen and Jeff Miller were looking for zero maintenance for their new home in Boyne City, so they opted for vinyl siding by CertainTeed. While you can paint vinyl siding, the Millers hoped never to add that chore to their to-do list, so they chose their color with care. The couple’s main consideration was that their home fit in with the older homes in their lakeside neighborhood. Their choice, Cypress, picks up the soft green tones of the surrounding pines and Lake Charlevoix across the street, while complementing their neighbors’ blue and gray houses. Four years later, the Millers still smile when they pull into their driveway.

This creamy shade offers the traditional cottage yellow without the need to scream it. Moreover, given its exposure to the south, the color makes the home “shine very nicely among the trees that surround it,” says architect Brad Butcher. “The home is not small,” he adds, “yet the covered porches and soft yellow color help to downplay its size and reflect the character of a cozy cottage as opposed to some of the larger log homes along the same shoreline.”

and Britt Diver’s waterfront cottage near Lee Point in Suttons Bay came from a kit that was built in 1977. The 1,800-square-foot, four-bedroom, threebath house with dazzling 180-degree views of Grand Traverse Bay is cozy and modern, with a two-story wall of windows on the back and a walkout lower level with cozy built-ins that can sleep 14 people. This cottage is a rare find in a tight housing market. In fact, the couple was already under contract for a nearby inland farmhouse when this one came on the market. “The cottage just popped up out of nowhere. The price was really good,” says Gretchen, an interior designer. She and Britt drove up from downstate the next day, looked at it, looked at each other, and put in their offer that day. They lost their earnest money for the other house, but Gretchen says that was fair, and besides, her husband was way more excited about this place. “Happy husband, happy life,” she twists the old adage. “The one I wanted, he

didn’t want to do anything to, but with this, he wanted to do everything. He even bought a boat.” They moved here last June after their son Copeland was accepted as a student at Interlochen Center for the Arts. At 17, he’s already a Michigan film actor. His two older brothers are Mac, 22, and Luke, 20. On day one, the couple started tearing out the walls— which were simply paneling nailed onto the studs—and began reconfiguring the entire orientation of the living space. “We took it down to the studs, and kept all the original wood floors that we could,” says Gretchen. They painted the center brick fireplace white and laid a herringbone slate floor over the old linoleum. They bought stock cabinetry, which they painted white and enhanced with white painted barn wood. “The only upper cabinet in the kitchen is a primitive cabinet I found years ago, which I decided to hang instead of set on the floor,” Gretchen says.

Luckily, the house kit came from Lindal Cedar Homes, well known in the North country for sturdy bones and longevity. This was no exception, with beautiful ceiling beams, which are now painted black, and the entire main space painted in a clean, crisp blackand-white scheme. They pushed the original dining area over to make way for an eat-in kitchen and added three chandeliers for ample lighting. Gretchen found a massive sectional, which seats 10 people, perfect for watching movies when the kids’ friends visit. Every room of the cottage holds interesting pieces, such as the antique side tables in the guest room from France, or the set of six thrift-shop dining chairs Gretchen bought for less than $100 and painted, distressed, waxed and reupholstered herself. “I tend to favor a story behind everything I purchase and display,” Gretchen says. finished with a full bath and bedroom, lots of storage nooks as well as built-in bunk beds. Big doors open to a patio with a pergola and a table with seating for 12. Traffic flows in and out and up and down the brand-new steps (about 100) and dock, which take them down 75 feet to the water. After the high water of the last few years, a new wall of rocks guarantees an erosion-proof beach. One of the things Gretchen loves most about the cottage is the site, which sits directly across the bay from Old Mission Peninsula, where she spent every summer growing up. That cemented her love for the area. Her grandfather, a General Motors executive and private pilot, owned a cottage and 15 acres just above Bowers Harbor, where the whole family made beautiful Michigan memories. At their new cottage, there’s a driftwood sign over the back doors that reads “Uahtawanta.” It’s just like the one Gretchen’s grandfather made with a magnifying glass and the sun to burn the letters into the wood. “I replicated it for our cottage,” Gretchen says. “The family cottage was on Neahtawanta Point and he changed it to Uahtawanta because ‘you oughta want to’ be here. It had a lot of meaning to everyone who went to the cottage. So, it holds the same in ours.” Patty LaNoue Stearns is a Michigan writer and author. NHC

FINDING THE FARMHOUSE WITHIN A VISIONARY ARCHITECT AND A TALENTED BUILDING CREW TURN A CENTURY-OLD FAMILY COTTAGE ON GLEN LAKE INTO A MODERN FARMHOUSE. BY ELIZABETH EDWARDS / PHOTOS BY TODD ZAWISTOWSKI

chimney, this Glen Lake cottage has always possessed its own quaint charm. Built some hundred years ago by the current homeowner’s great aunt and uncle, the cottage wasn’t winterized until the 1980s—an amenity added by those homeowners who also rehabbed the entire interior and added a two-story addition to make room for their four young children. But as the couple grew into grandparents, there just wasn’t enough room for everyone to be together at the lake. It was time to make more room in the beloved family cottage. Enter architect Ken Richmond, who was referred to the couple by a friend. On his first visit to the cottage, Richmond was struck by two salient points. The first: The cottage, he says, could have been anywhere. “It had nothing to do with Glen Lake—those old cottages were built for keeping out the elements, not for their views.” The other point? The kitchen was located on the road side of the house—and not only did it lack a view of the lake, it was also small. “Everyone gathered elbow-to-elbow along a cooking and eating island that ran the length of the kitchen,” says the homeowner. Richmond set to work on a plan that would accommodate the homeowners’ desire for a modern farmhouse aesthetic, give the family more room and re-orient the floor plan to the lake view—which stretches across Big and Little Glen Lakes to take in the Sleeping Bear Dunes on the horizon. His solutions were ingenious. The obvious thing would have been to add on to the lake side of the home where there is a bounty of lawn. But that would mean destroying two centuryold fieldstone retaining walls that encircled the

lakeside deck and lower garden terrace. Instead of wasting that authentic asset, Richmond designed an entirely new roadside addition that included an extended front porch, entryway, pantry and two new bedrooms downstairs and two upstairs. With both the old section of the home and the new clad in creamy white clapboard and inset with period-style black framed windows, the exterior is a perfect execution of the modern farmhouse style. What’s more, instead of destroying the century-old fieldstone chimney, which once ran on the outside of the home from the ground up, Richmond gave the chimney

its own place in the new interior plan. Situated about 10 feet inside the new entry, the old chimney is both visually interesting and also a barrier between the entry and the hubbub of the main living area on the other side of it. Peek around either side of the chimney, however, and the sight line leads through the living area, out generous new windows to the lake. The original fieldstone fireplace (where the homeowner's great aunt and uncle actually used to cook!) tucked into the old chimney sits opposite that view. The great room that unfolds between those two anchor points is open and airy, with a generous living area and a

Milkwhite walls, ceiling and cabinetry and walnut floors harmonize to create this on-point rendition of a modern farmhouse. Outside, mason Mark Finstad laid a handsome flagstone porch on the terrace between the home and the old upper fieldstone wall, and landscaper Brian Zimmerman went on to create stunning gardens and walkways. The homeowners had the trees trimmed up to amplify the shotgun view that leads across the rolling lawn and lakes to the tawny strip on the horizon that is the Sleeping Bear. With the renovation complete, the best seats for watching the sun set over the Bear on summer evenings are on that porch—a show this family intends to revel in for generations to come. NHC

SEASIDE COTTAGE ON WALLOON

THIS MAGNIFICENT SHINGLESTYLE HOME IS AS SUITED TO ITS LOT ON WALLOON LAKE AS IT WOULD BE ON THE NEW ENGLAND COAST, WHERE THE CLASSIC 19TH-CENTURY STYLE WAS BORN. BY ELIZABETH EDWARDS PHOTOS BY JACQUELINE SOUTHBY

T

he petoskey - based firm white & liebler Architects specializes in designing period homes for 21st-century living. So, when the new owner of a 1990s log home on Walloon Lake came to Nick Liebler with the hopes of updating the interior and transforming the exterior into a classic shingle-style home, he was all in. “The owner is well-traveled and has a great appreciation for architecture,” Liebler says. Shingle style was first popularized in the 19th century on the New England coast, around the time of the American centennial. Among those to embrace and popularize the style were legendary New York architects McKim, Mead & White, who were drawn to the simpler, more American trend rather than the ornate styles that had reigned during the Victorian era. The blueprints to transform the log home were complete when the contractor, Scott Kennard of Harbor Springs’ Wentworth Builders, sounded an alarm about the foundation. His opinion: the foundation was unstable. The log home was a teardown. Liebler agreed. After mulling over the setback, the homeowner saw it as an opportunity to customize his home from scratch. Liebler hit the drawing table again, and came up with this Shingle-style masterpiece outfitted with all the amenities of luxe modern living—made a reality by

“THAT OLD-COTTAGE FEEL WAS SOMETHING THAT THE HOMEOWNER REALLY WANTED TO EXPERIENCE,” SAYS LIEBLER.

Wentworth Builders and its team. The crux of what makes this home Shingle style are the natural shingles that cover the entire exterior: Alaskan yellow cedar on the walls and red cedar shingles on the roof. Indeed, true to the overlapping Arts & Crafts and Shinglestyle periods, all of the materials used in the home are natural, including the copper terrace roof and gutters, and the natural stone used in the fireplace, chimney and landscaping. The organic materials are pulled together by a custom trim and window-cladding shade of deep charcoal-green. “The subtlety of that green is incredible,” says Kennard. “It just glows.” Traditional elements continue on the interior, including architecturally accurate trims and moldings, custom-craft-

ed built-in cabinetry and use of natural materials including wide-plank vintage white oak flooring, locally harvested basswood shiplap paneling and Douglas fir beadboard. A screened-in sleeping porch off the master bedroom completes the home’s classic, lost-in-time feel. “That oldcottage feel was something that the homeowner really wanted to experience,” says Liebler. Both the sleeping porch and the balcony off the guest suite above look out onto the back side of the home where there is a view of a pond on the property next door. “It’s this really tranquil, peaceful setting—it looks like ‘On Golden Pond,’” Liebler says. The ambiance of a bygone era, indeed, but the home supports a cutting-edge lifestyle from its open-floor plan to the kids’ bunk room (above the garage) that is outfitted with NHC

built-in bunks, each completed with charging stations and television screens. Both Liebler and Wentworth agree, however, that what makes this home truly live modern is its connection to the waterfront. “Today’s current standards for the way people live on the water is a lot different than it was even 30 years ago,” Liebler says. “One of the key features is that when you step in the front door, there is a straight line of sight out to the lake so that you’re immediately drawn to the outside. This kind of relationship between the indoor spaces and the outdoor spaces is really important, and we have a lot more opportunities to make that happen today—more even than, say, in the 1990s—as far as the amount of glass that can be on the lake side.” After that initial watery view from the entrance, a custom wet bar situated on the lake side of the great room beckons, and in turn opens to a covered terrace outfitted with a state-of-the-art outdoor kitchen. From the terrace, a short, winding slate path leads to an in-ground hot tub. All of the landscaping, of course, culminates on the sublime Walloon Lake waterfront. The beautiful irony of this home is that, despite all of its cutting-edge amenities, it blends perfectly into its rustic, wooded shoreline. “That nestled-in character on the lake was something the owner wanted to preserve,” Liebler says. “He didn’t want it to feel like this was a brand-new house—it looks as though it has been on the site for 100 years.” NHC
