SLEEPING BEAR DUNES NATIONAL LAKESHORE The Sleeping Bear Sand Dunes shimmer like gold leaf in photos and videos snapped from space by NASA satellites. For people fortunate enough to set foot on the sand mountains that tower above the aquamarine waters of Lake Michigan, the dunes are treasures whose worth is without measure—a cache of human and natural history, recreational opportunities, adventure and above all, inspiration. From popular attractions like the Dune Climb and the Pierce Stocking Scenic Drive to the secrets of the uninhabited Manitou Islands, this planetary gem never ceases to amaze. Here’s your personal guide to Leelanau County’s long and lovely stretch of this national park. FESTIVALS

Dune Climb Concert, July 8, 7 p.m.: The concert happens once a year at the base of the Dune Climb, and this year’s band is Jazz North, performing everything from funk to swing to rhythm and blues. Bring your beach chairs, blankets and snacks, 231.334.6112, glenarborart.org. Port Oneida Fair, August 10 and 11: Set among the farms of the bucolic Port Oneida Rural Historic District, this fabulous family event showcases the traditional crafts and farm skills of the late 1800s and early 1900s. phsb.org.

BEACHES

From Empire take M22 north then turn west on Voice Road and wind your way to the popular North Bar Beach, where a shallow channel connects North Bar Lake to Lake Michigan. One of Lake Michigan’s best destination beaches is located in the historic ghost town of Glen Haven, on M109 a couple miles west of Glen Arbor. Follow the road left at the red Cannery building and find more stretches of sandy beach. The gorgeous beaches of Lake Michigan’s Good Harbor Bay can be accessed off M22 at the ends of CR669 and CR651. There’s superb sand here, but a left at the end of CR669 leads you to where sweet, shallow Shalda Creek flows into Lake Michigan.

Classic Sleeping Bear Dunes Trek up the giant mountain of sand that is the Dune Climb for its spectacular views of the Glen Lakes (including the Little Glen beach across the road, where you can rinse the sand off when you are finished playing on the dune!). Drink it all in then run and tumble your way down. Find the Dune Climb five miles north of Empire on M109. Get the story of how the Sleeping Bear Dunes were formed as you stop to read interpretive signs along the 7-mile Pierce Stocking Scenic Drive. It winds through a splendid tapestry of dunes and forests and serves up jawdropping overlooks. The drive begins on M109 a few miles north of Empire. Go back in time in Glen Haven where you can shop at a general store that sells old-fashioned treats and toys, see a working blacksmith shop and browse a wooden boat museum. Maritime history comes alive at the nearby Sleeping Bear Point Coast Guard Station Maritime Museum, where a live reenactment of a shipwreck rescue (in which Raggedy Ann and Andy play the part of the rescued) happens every summer day at 3 p.m. See 19th-century farmsteads preserved in the Port Oneida Rural Historic District northeast of Glen Arbor, off M22. Admire many of the farms from the road, or strike out on foot along the Bay View Trail (trailhead on Thoreson Road). Bring a mountain bike and poke around the dirt roads that zig and zag through this peaceful and beautiful valley (but no wheels allowed on the footpaths). Adventure to North and South Manitou Islands beginning with a trip across Lake Michigan’s Manitou Passage on a Manitou Island Transit ferry. North Manitou is a wilderness area and is managed for backcountry camping. Find miles of wooded and shoreline trails, an inland lake and a handful of historic cottages. South Manitou is managed for both daytrips and backcountry camping. The beautiful island has a 19th-century lighthouse, an ancient stand of virgin cedars known as the Valley of the Giants, and motorized tours of what was once a bustling pioneer community. Camping on both islands is primitive and by reservation: 877.444.677 or online at recreation.gov. The ferry schedule varies by time of year—check the website. Reservations recommended, at 231.256.9061, manitoutransit.com.

SUTTONS BAY

Park your car for the day. You’re in Suttons Bay, a yearround coastal village that has everything within walking and biking distance for a quintessential vacation day. Kid-friendly Suttons Bay beach is a block from downtown, fabulous restaurants and boutiques abound along St. Joseph Street, the town’s main drag, where you’ll also find a movie theater. Heck, you can even ride a car-free bike path to Traverse City or pedal to wineries! suttonsbayarea.com. FESTIVALS

The Suttons Bay Art Festival, August 4–5, Marina Park. suttonsbayartfestival.org. Leelanau Peninsula Wine on the Water Festival, July 21, Marina Park. leelanauchamber.com.

BEACHES

Find your spot in the sand at Suttons Bay Beach along the shallow waters of West Grand Traverse Bay just a stone’s throw from downtown Suttons Bay. A playground, picnic tables and grills make this an all-day affair. Round it out with a burrito to go from Bay Burrito Co. on St. Joseph's Street.

GOLF

Eighteen holes doesn’t get much better than The Leelanau Club at Bahle Farms, where the view takes in working orchards and Lake Michigan vistas. 9505 E. Otto Rd., Suttons Bay, 231.271.2020, leelanauclub.com.

BIKE

The 17-mile Leelanau Trail is a flat, paved non-motorized path that spools out through forests, orchards, meadows and wetlands from Suttons Bay to Traverse City. Find the Suttons Bay trailhead on Fourth Street. traversetrails.org. Rent Bikes: Suttons Bay Bikes, 231.421.6815, suttonsbaybikes.com. 18

» LAKE LEELANAU

Classic Suttons Bay Take a selfie at the English-style red phone booth in downtown Suttons Bay. Play tennis at Herman Park. Check out the waterwheel on the creek near the corner of M22 and Jefferson Street.

LAKE LEELANAU

Slow down as you cross the bridge on M204, you’re passing the picturesque Lake Leelanau narrows—the sweet channel connecting the lake’s north and south lobes. This quiet village conceals delicious surprises, including a winery and tasting room, three restaurants that run the gamut from country elegance to country kicked-back, a bakery, a distillery and tasting room and a local grocery that churns out killer Indian take-out.

Classic Lake Leelanau Paddle the Narrows Natural Area: This 2,350-foot-long wetland joins North and South Lake Leelanau. Watch for raptor nests and all manner of flora and fauna. Put in at the road-end beach on Lake Leelanau a mile west of the village of Lake Leelanau—also a great place to spread a towel and take a dip. From the village, west on M204 about a mile, right on Popp Rd. Rent Kayaks or SUPs: Suttons Bay Bikes, 231.421.6815, suttonsbaybikes.com.
