uskogee Indian Education partnered with Fife Indian United Methodist Church for the Annual Azalea Powwow April 9, 2011 at the Muskogee Civic Center. The Inter-Tribal Powwow is the most highly recognized event associated within Indian culture. Our goal was to make a living classroom available to all our Native students, so they can have the opportunity to learn about the respected honors and traditions that are up-held within the Powwow Culture. This living classroom started with Gourd Dancing followed by the Grand Entry. Our students also participated in the planning, making fry bread, bringing water to the Head singer, and dancing. Many outstanding young Indian women in the Muskogee Public School district participated in our first annual Native American Student Advocacy (NASA) Miss NASA Scholarship Pageant, sponsored by Bacone College, Hodge Dealership, Robert Kelly and many others. The winners of this contest will be representing over 2,000 Native American students from Muskogee Public Schools, and their tribes in local and state pow-wows, parades, and other culturally related activities. Every year the winner will receive a 100% tuition scholarship to Bacone College and with the title she will be encouraged to be a role model in her home town and throughout the Indian Nation as she travels. This year’s winners were Luiciana Arce, Junior Miss NASA and Chelsea Yelloweyes, Miss NASA.

Congratulations to being nominated by Grthant Foreman teacher Jamie Stilwell for Year in its 14 county e Cherokee Nation for Teacher of the here with Chief Chad district jurisdiction. She is pictured Smith.

The goal of Indian Education is to increase student achievement, promote cultural awareness, and increase higher education opportunities. an We invite everyone to join us next year at our W 2nnd annual MISS NASA Pageant.

Rougher R.O.A.D. Leads to National School of Character Rougher Road has long been a tradition at Muskogee High School, referring to the access road leading to the school. Now Rougher R.O.A.D. has led to MHS being awarded the National School of Character distinction by the Character Education Partnership in Washington, D.C. The MHS touchstone, Rougher R.O.A.D., stands for respect, opportunity, achievement, and determination, four hallmarks of character chosen by the MHS student body during Café Conversations. This fulfills one of 11 Principles of Character Education identified by the Character Education Partnership in their framework for school success. Other substantiating practices found at Muskogee High School include student family advocacy groups, 2m2l student speakers at district convocation, and the many charitable fundraising events sponsored by MHS clubs. Meaningful and challenging academic programs include the implementation of Literacy First at MHS and lessons that include literature or history in which opportunities to discuss ethical issues present themselves. Campaign for Kindness and the Student Summit also exemplify the kinds of activities in which students and adults work together to determine values and establish guiding precepts. A Student Bill of Rights was created at the Student Summit and was later printed and placed in all classrooms in the district, reminding students that everyone has the right to be respected at school. Muskogee community members rallied around Muskogee High School’s stupendous honor and purchased commemorative coins for every student, teacher, administrator, and all support personnel in the school, attesting to the district motto of One Team, One Vision, One Community. Congratulations to Muskogee High School’s students, teachers, administrators and staff for following the road to success! Our community is proud of you!

Farewell, Mrs. Venters Derryl Venters, Assistant Superintendent of Curriculum and Instruction, is retiring after 39 years with Muskogee Public Schools. Mrs. Venters has served the district as a venerated teacher, science curriculum coordinator, principal, public relations director, and professional development director, in addition to her role as assistant superintendent. We would like to say thank you to Mrs. Venters for her dedication to Muskogee Public Schools, its teachers, stud students, parents, and the Muskogee community. co

Dr. Strickland is pictured here with (from left) Superintendent Mike Garde, Assistant Superintendent Jim Wilson, Assistant Superintendent Derryl Venters, and Board of Education member Larry Leatherman.

Welcome, Dr. Strickland! Muskogee Public Schools is pleased to welcome Dr. Edwin Strickland to the district. Dr. Strickland will serve as principal of the 7th/8th Grade Center. He comes to Muskogee with a background in school reform, having served as a school turnaround expert with the Arkansas Department of Education. We look forward to the many great things he will do as a member of our administrative team.

Freshmen Take the 2014 Graduation Pledge Muskogee freshmen signed the 2014 graduation pledge banner, committing to stay on track for graduation by 2014. The banner will be displayed until students graduate in 2014 as a way to focus attention on the importance of school completion. Students who took the pledge were also given a green “Commitment to Graduate” bracelet as a daily reminder of their goal. The pledge is a follow-up to discussions that have taken place throughout the year regarding high school credits, transcripts, graduation goals, and college resources.

Muskogee High School freshmen Ashli Teague, Morgan Wallace, and Jordan Cunningham sign the Class of 2014 Commitment to Graduate.

Keeping Children Tobacco Free Parents do not want their kids to use tobacco, for obvious reasons. Smoking causes serious health problems – including lung cancer, heart disease, and strokes . To make matters worse, kids can start becoming seriously addicted to smoking very quickly, just weeks or even days after first “experimenting with cigarettes. What’s more, smoking can harm kids well before they reach adulthood by causing a number of immediate, sometimes irreversible, health risks and problems. Each day, more than 3,500 kids try their first cigarette; and each day about 1,000 other kids, less than 18 years

of age, become new regular, daily smokers. That is more than 350,000 new underage daily smokers each year – and roughly one-third of them will eventually die prematurely from smoking-caused disease. Fortunately, parents can take a number of effective actions to protect their kids from starting to smoke or becoming another one of the tobacco industry’s addicted customers and victims. Being good parents and role models is important, but it takes much more to prevent kids from smoking. Parents must also work against pro-smoking influences outside the home, including efforts to ensure that schools are doing their best to prevent and reduce youth smoking and to reduce cigarettecompany marketing that reaches and influences kids.

Parents as Anti-Smoking Role Models (Whether They Smoke or Not) What parents

say, how they act, and the values they communicate through their words and deeds has an enormous influence on children. Studies have found that parental actions, attitudes, and opinions about smoking have a great deal of influence on whether or not kids smoke. Some specific actions parents can take include:

If you don’t smoke, don’t start! If you do smoke, quit! Children who have a parent who smokes are more likely to smoke and to be heavier smokers at young ages. When parents quit smoking, their children become less likely to start

smoking and more likely to quit if they already smoke.

If you smoke, share your struggles to quit with your children. Kids greatly underestimate how difficult it is to quit smoking. Showing how hard it is to quit (and making sure quitting doesn’t look easy) can help eliminate this misperception. Continuing to try to quit, despite the difficulties, also sends a strong anti-smoking message.

Maintain a smoke-free home. A smoke-free home makes children less likely to smoke, even if their parents smoke. By not allowing anyone to smoke in their homes, parents not only make smoking less convenient for their kids but also make a powerful statement that they believe smoking is undesirable. Tell your kids that you don’t want them to smoke and will be disappointed if they do. Parental attitudes, opinions, and feelings about their kids’ smoking status greatly influence whether or not kids will smoke, even when the parents smoke.

Support Tobacco Free School and Community Policies: Tobacco Free School campuses and communities are a critical part of creating the norm of tobacco free lifestyles. Children copy the behavior they see their parents and other adults in the community practicing. Ensure that what they see at your child’s school and at community activities is free of tobacco use.
