don’t know how many of you have heard the term, automatic writing, but it goes something like this. You find yourself a quiet room, where you will absolutely not be disturbed for at least an hour. That means no phone interruptions, no bathroom breaks, no children racing through the house, no husband who cannot find something to eat. It is just you, preferably after everyone has gone to bed, and perhaps a glass of wine and a timer. You have a notebook and a pen. Not a computer. Then you choose a topic. It really doesn’t matter what the topic is, because the object of this assignment is that you will soon go off course, and begin writing something else, anyway. So, sit down, set the timer for one hour and begin. This should be in your own handwriting, but if you must use a computer, then go ahead. For example, let’s say you choose a topic 28

such as your relationship with your best friend. You start writing about all of your experiences, your trips you may have taken together, and the like, but after twenty minutes (that’s the golden number) you begin writing about other things. For example, suppose you’re recalling the cake your best friend baked for your birthday, but then you remember the cake you didn’t get when you were six years old because your mother was sick in the hospital, and how frightened you were, and then you remember other times you were frightened and you write about those times, and on and on, until your timer goes off. This exercise unlocks memories, both good and bad, that you may have completely forgotten, or negated the importance of, but you have now “free associated” your thoughts on paper, and you may be surprised at how much better you feel after this exercise. You have come

to know yourself better because knowledge is power, and after you do this long enough, you will connect the dots of your psyche, and gain a greater understanding of what makes you tick. If you put this paper away for several months, and then pull it out, you may not even recall writing some of it, except that it is in your own handwriting. For What it’s Worth, it doesn’t take the place of therapy, but if you don’t have the time or money for counseling, this gets to the bottom of things pretty darn quickly. You might be happily surprised at the results.
