Overactive bladder treatment

Overactive bladder occurs when abnormal nerves send signals to the bladder at the wrong time, causing its muscles to squeeze without warning. Voiding up to seven times a day is normal for most people, but those with overactive bladder may find that they must urinate even more frequently. Some overactive bladder symptoms include:     

Frequent urination Urgency (need to urinate) Leaking or involuntary, and/or complete bladder voiding (urge incontinence) Need to urinate frequently (eight or more times in 24 hours) Nocturia or waking up two or more times at night to urinate

There are a variety of overactive bladder treatment options for those affected. In addition to medication, behavioral changes as an overactive bladder treatment may help reduce episodes and strengthen bladder muscles. Bladder training can be done to strengthen bladder muscles. Pelvic floor muscle exercises, also called Kegel exercises, can improve function of the pelvic floor muscles and urinary sphincter to hold urine and suppress involuntary movement of the bladder. These exercises are recommended twice daily for approximately 15 minutes for four to six weeks. Other possible treatments include adjusting fluid intakes and reducing irritants, such as limiting caffeine and alcohol. Patients can also try increasing fiber intake or taking supplements for constipation, which can reduce overactive bladder symptoms.

Overactive bladder is a treatable medical condition, yet many patients never seek help. Doctors treat thousands of patients suffering from overactive bladder every year, helping them return to a more normal life. Doctors can also help relieve the feelings of anxiety, embarrassment and isolation that can result from overactive bladder symptoms
