When someone is unable to control the ability to urinate and there's an involuntary loss of urine, this is described as urinary incontinence. This condition is also sometimes referred to as leaky bladder. It's a very common problem, especially among older adults. It is a known fact that as many as 30% of seniors living on their own and up to 50% of seniors living in nursing homes experience this condition. It generally affects more women than men until the age of 80.

The urine then starts to collect in the bladder until there's so much that the bladder becomes distended (overstretched) and urine leaks out. Overactive bladder treatment is available for those who seek it. Treatments for women include: A catheter. A catheter is a thin, flexible tube that allows urine to drain out. It is inserted into the bladder through the urethra. Surgery. Surgery may be needed to correct problems that cause overflow incontinence, such as obstructions or abnormal growths in the urinary tract. For men, medicines can be used to make the prostate smaller.
