Editors Note I am a simple person that loves simple things. I am not a fan of makeup, I am not a fan of wearing the latest styles. I don’t keep up with the Joneses because I am busy trying to keep up with the Bryants. Beauty in my own words is something that draws you to something or someone. It’s oftentimes not seen with just your eyes. Beauty is suppressed by the evils of the world. Love is one of the things that brings beauty to the surface. I look for the beauty on the inside because the outside fades over time but the inside beauty will never go out because it is the real you. My beauty is my imperfection. I am beautiful no matter the size of my body, no matter how my face looks, no matter what others see me as. A persons true beauty is the reflection of their inner happiness. Even if you have been called ugly you must look at the person saying it because they see a reflection of themselves. Remember everything has beauty you just have to look for it. “There is beauty in simplicity”

Beauty is defined as a characteristic of a person, animal, place, object, or idea that provides a perceptual experience of pleasure or satisfaction

Beauty <<< 08

As a woman I’ve often pondered about defining beauty. Many questions run through my mind as I seek the answer. Questions such as, is it internal or external? Is it an attitude? Is it determined by the clothes and shoes that I wear? Maybe it’s the right hair style and makeup? Or just maybe it’s all those things wrapped up in one neat package? Do you define your own beauty or do others define it for you? As I strive to define my own beauty, I’m taken back to days when I felt like it was all about the “right” look. You know, the look that turns heads when you walk into a room, and their glares speak loud yet the room remains silent. Those are the days I feel that my beauty commands attention. But then I ask myself what about the days when I leave home feeling the weight of the world on my shoulders and no matter how hard I try I can barely lift my head to see if anyone gives me a second thought. Am I less beautiful during those times? If so, would that define my beauty as a state of mind.....maybe? While you keep those thoughts in mind, let’s move on and talk about internal beauty. A couple of things come to mind regarding this kind of beauty. First, when someone who is considered unappealing visually, within today’s society standards, you’ll often hear someone explain that the person is beautiful on the inside. Inside? Well, this makes me wonder if this is some cheap compliment to just say something good about the person who doesn’t possess observable traits that many deem as beautiful. Thoughts? 09>>> Beauty

“People often say that the beholder,’ and I say ing thing about beauty the beh

- Salma

‘beauty is in the eye of y that the most liberatis realizing that you are holder.”

And then there are the times people describe someone beautiful on the inside because of their nourishing demeanor and loving attitude. But couldn’t that alone make them a beautiful person in general? Is it an insult to only recognize inner beauty and not outer beauty, and vice versa? What about the clothing that we wrap ourselves in to conceal, highlight, and ultimately make us beautiful? Is an expensive dress by a top designer the key to what makes a person feel beautiful? Is this why many steer clear of the bathing suit section while shopping because it doesn’t cover up the areas that sends the signals of insecurity? This makes me wonder, just what exactly is the perfect outfit to accentuate everything just right every time to define every aspect of a person’s beauty? Let me know, just maybe I’ll take 365 of those. Beauty. What is it? What does it mean to you?

You’ve just read a few of my many ramblings about the topic. Now it’s your turn to tell me your thoughts, ramblings, insecurities, moments of confidence, etc. Go ahead, I’m listening.

Spring back into your workout routine by Schnelle Acevedo http://brooklynactivemama.com/ It’s springtime! Flowers are blooming, birds are chirping, layers are shedding, temperature is rising---spring is here! If you are one of the millions of people that set a weight loss goal at the beginning of the year and didn’t quite follow through, you are not alone. Here are five ways you can spring back into your workout routine:

1) Buy new workout clothes: Nothing perks up a routine more than some new workout gear.

Whether its a new top or even new comfy yoga pants it can make a huge difference in your motivation to work out. You don’t have to spend an arm and a leg either, stores like TJ Maxx, Old Navy and Marshall’s have high quality fitness clothing at very affordable prices.

2) Take small steps (literally): One of the common problems with weight loss resolu-

tions is that people tend to go way too hard way too fast and as a result get burned out faster than they expected. Unfortunately this leads a lot of people to give up on the whole process. Instead of trying to keep up with slim Jim (or Jane) running a 8 minute mile--how about enjoying a nice brisk walk in your neighborhood or on a treadmill as a start. Eventually you can start running at your own pace and build from there

3) Create a killer playlist: Everyone has an amazing set of songs that will get you moving.

Why not use them to your fitness advantage? Whether its Beyonce, Maroon 5, or even Pitbull, make a special playlist of songs that make you want to get up and shake something! Upbeat songs are fantastic for workouts! Before you get ready to move, line up 5 to 10 songs on you music player and just like that you have a decent playlist for a 15-30 minute workout. These songs should have a great baseline and inspire you to want to move!

4) Take a group fitness class: I know what you are thinking, I barely like to exercise and you

want me to take a group fitness class?! YES! Group fitness is a great way to ease back into working out, this is especially true for low key classes like yoga. Attending a group fitness class will help you gain more confidence in the gym as well as boost your social life. If things get too hard you can leave the class early but keep going until you get the hang of it. (It’s also great to let your instructor know its been a long time so that the can provide with modified versions of the hard moves, if necessary)

11 >>> Beauty

“Take care of your body with these eyes alone, and if they -Goethe

5) Get Social: Announce that you want to lose 10 pounds by June 1 (or whatever your goal is)

to ALL of your social networks, then back it up. Not only will your friends encourage you but they will also check you when you announce in Facebook your not so healthy cravings. Announce the goal then do all the work necessary to achieve that goal.

Design <<< 14

When I think about the fascinating world of interior design, I think about a world that’s filled with unlimited beauty, inspiration, creativity and knowledge. A world that is ever growing and constantly changing. I will go even deeper and say that interior design is a world that will continue to transcend with unlimited possibilities. When transforming any interior or exterior space into what I always call a piece of artwork turning into a masterpiece, it makes me so beyond blessed and truly proud to be a part of such a dynamic team of individuals. A team of individuals that design, create, inspire and motivate to change your surroundings and your life. As designers we all have an abundance of creativity that runs deep. When I am designing a space I don’t think I ever stop thinking of multiple ways that space can be designed. Whether a complete over-haul, redesign, or just by making simple changes to a space, each can make a dramatic difference. Interior design flourishes with unlimited style. It’s global, it’s everywhere! Remembering back at a young age I have always had a deep love and passion for color, unique furnishings, elegant fabrics and the glitz & glam of large crystal chandeliers. Being an individual that was gifted with the ability to draw and paint carried me into the amazing world of color and art. Color is definitely my side-kick. Color excites me and I plan on splashing it around this big beautiful globe. At this point any one can image how excited I am when it comes to designing interiors. My love of interiors and everything about them will only continue to grow. I love rearranging furnishings in a space, changing objects around and definitely making sure everything has a home. My feelings will never change when it comes to how I feel about transforming interiors. I always stress to my husband when it comes to our home, if any object doesn’t have a specific place, than we don’t need it. I am one who despises clutter. Interiors as well as exteriors always need to be designed with meaning. Everything that is displayed in the space should not only complement each other, but balance likewise. It’s not only about the look of the space, but the feel, harmony and rhythm. It’s about a space being complete, about being whole with nothing absent or lack thereof. When I sign on to any design project, whether interior or exterior, I always use the same advice for each indivudual space. Being in this field of work gives me the opportunity to combine all the things that I love and have a deep passion for. From fabrics, furnishings, accessories, lighting and once again my true love, color. Everything that I love all rolled into one, which I always call my complete design package, it’s truly amazing! ! I must elaborate on one of my favorite words masterpiece, which I use a lot in this article. When designing an interior or exterior space, to me it’s a piece of artwork that will eventually be transformed into a one-of-a-kind masterpiece. I made a promise to myself to always treat each space that I design unique. My own personal opinion, I don’t think a space should ever be duplicated. Not saying that a simple idea taken from a space is wrong. Sure, we all get inspiration from great design, but duplicating a space is something that I wouldn’t recommend doing. Once again this is only my own personal opinion. That’s where I truly rely on designing from within; designing from the soul. When it comes to design, that true gut feeling will always make that creativity flourish with amazing ideas to help create and design those amazing interiors. The added bonus of using your own creativity is you get an interior that is truly original and a one-of-a-kind-masterpiece. When achieving your goals to complete a space well pleasing to the client(s), this will always help give the desired style, look and feel for their home. It’s always about the client(s) when it comes to their home. Sometimes client(s) might ask for something that you feel is over the top. That’s when I pull a trick out of my creativity hat. Yes, I always wear my creative hat; it’s my side-kick like color. After all, this is where the client(s) reside. Making the client(s) happy will always get you brownie points. I must say I have a ton of brownie points. . Pointers are also very good when guiding your client(s) on exactly what is realistic and what is not realistic in the world of interior design. When designing from the soul you can always make it happen for the client(s). No client(s) should ever be left with a feeling of regret after having their space designed. 15>>> Design

06.

When my client(s) are smiling, deep in my soul I am jumping and shouting HALLELUJAH!!! Down through the years when being engaged in a conversation pertaining to interior design, I’m always asked why do I get so overly excited about interior design? I always explain to the individual(s) that I truly can’t help it; it’s a part of me. It’s a part that is deeply rooted in my soul. It’s a unique piece that I always carry around within my soul. Likewise, I always make sure that it’s used daily in my life as well. I’m in love with interior design. My passion runs deep. When I’m designing a space for a client(s) it makes me so happy and overjoyed to be able to bring happiness to someone’s life that they can truly enjoy for years to come. When designing a space I always view the whole space as a three-way progress, meaning there will always be a beginning, middle and ending. The beginning is about taking what the client(s) truly desire for their space and as a designer I plan, prepare and set the stage. The middle brings along change and sometimes more change. The ending will always be the transformation of the space from artwork to a masterpiece. This is always a simple plan that I use and take with me on each design project. There should always be a plan in place when designing any interior or exterior space. So, if by chance you don’t use a plan, start using one as in now.

It will save a lot of time and money in the end. It takes more than just saying I love designing. It takes a true passion and self-perseverance that just can’t be implemented with a simple snap of the fingers. I have been designing for a while now and recently established my business, KCLIDESIGN. LLC PDSA. It takes a lot of hard work, but if you truly love designing than you will see that it’s time well spent on something that you love and enjoy doing and not just viewed as hard work. I must say that it’s very rewarding to be doing what I truly love. Interior design always make me go the extra mile of taking something simple and turning it into a wow factor. It pushes me deep in my inner soul to make something ordinary stand out and be unique. I love doing what someone might say can’t be done, such as “you can’t or shouldn’t do that in interior design.” “Just when you tell me that something can’t be done, I’m going to prove you wrong and make it happen!” Interior design is deep within my soul. It’s what I was created to do. As I’m writing this article, the more I write about my love and passion for design, the more I want to design a room as in now! I feel as an interior designer when designing from the soul, that inner voice if you listen very carefully it will always produce beautiful one-of-a-kind as well as pleasing interiors. The possibilities are beyond endless when it comes to designing interiors and exteriors. My creative inner soul runs long as the ocean and deep as the sea, which is owed all to GOD! I thank him and I praise him for a true gift. I plan to continue using my gift of interior design all around this fabulous globe. I will leave you with one note: I truly believe that interior design is so much better when it’s coming from within; from the SOUL. I LIVE. I BREATHE. I LOVE INTERIOR DESIGN.

Beauty and the Beast Beauty. You all know her. She’s that essence of perfect imperfection staring back at you when you look in the mirror. She is that hard working woman that makes a daily 9-5 seem as effortless as taking in a breath of fresh air-even when the reality of maintaining that routine on top of daily vanity maintenance is everything but refreshing. She is the girl that uses her mind as a weapon and listens more than she speaks. She is the girl that knows who she is, what she wants and refuses to settle for anything less than just that. She is the nurturing mother, the loving daughter, the loyal girlfriend/wife, the ambitious businesswoman, and all of the above. She is YOU. The Beast. You all know him. Metaphorically speaking, he is Society. He tells you that your physical humanitarian efforts aren’t enough-you have to be effortlessly gorgeous as well. You must fit his unrealistic measurements of beauty to a tee. You must look this wayweigh this much-be this tall-be this thick/skinny-have these color eyes with this length and texture of hair-have a mouth full of perfect pearly whites-wear this bra size-on top of supporting these physical attributes with the brains of Einstein held up by a heart of gold. You must be this and that and so much more than he could even ever seem to be of production himself. As strong as Beauty may be, she still finds herself second guessing herself when in the presence of the Beast. He is and has been manipulative and menacingly convincing since the beginning of time; but while his standards may have changed overtime, nonetheless there has always been and seems to will always be a trendy standard to follow. The time line of beauty has seem to make a dramatic circle over the past 600+ years. Beginning in the 15th century Renaissance era, a woman’s curves were appreciated-and not necessarily the type of current curves flaunted by icons on the red carpet such as J Lo, Beyonce and Nikki Minaj, but more-so soft rounded curves. During the Elizabethan era, its said that it was common for some women to actually shave their eyebrows to create the illusion of higher/larger foreheads because this was a value of beauty (and this value of beauty was/is shared throughout other cultures including many African cultures). Today it seems regardless of how beautiful the face, larger foreheads are far from envied and instead are mocked. Even the lovely Tyra Banks and Rihanna are victims of this ridicule despite their gorgeous entities.

Up until the turn of the century, around the 1890s to the early 1900s, the solid round curves of a women were the epitome of art. Many many homes were decorated with still painted portraits of women (until the discovery of digital photography) and many became very famous paintings such as Da vinci’s Mona Lisa, Botticelli’s Birth of Venus and Vermeer’s Girl with a Pearl earring. The mere glance of these famous paintings along with the women seen in today’s modern music videos and fashion magazine layouts in comparison, will present an obvious and tremendous difference in standards of western beauty. According to an article in the Hub pages on Western Standards of Beauty, during the early 1900s, the era of the “New Woman,” a more feminist approach was taken to express female beauty and sexuality. The image of the “Gibson girl’ was presented and famed; the dull image of big baggy dresses were erased and the beginning of tight form fitting gowns/ dresses and corsets emerged. The women of this new generation were rebellious and partied, danced to jazz and publicly smoked cigarettes. 05. to the classic pin up girls during the Over the next few decades, we were introduced war years, the Marilyn Monroes during the 50’s, the evolution of thin women led by supermodel Twiggy in the 60’s, the Farrah Fawcetts in the 70’s, the Cindy Crawfords in the 80’s, the Kate Moss’ in the 90’s, and present day...the Angelina Jolies’, Jennifer Lopez, Beyonces and Nikki Minajs. Some trends eventually recycled while never came back into style but nonetheless, there was still a standard. What caught my surprise throughout my research of western standards of beauty is the lack of black beauty that was mentioned. Although there were beautiful black women present within the eras I mentioned above including the Billie Holidays, the Tina Turners and the Pam Griers-leading up to the present day Naomi Campbells, Imans, Oprah Winfreys, and African supermodels like Alek Wek, they weren’t relevant to be mentioned unless i was researching BLACK or AFRICAN AMERICAN standards of beauty. When speaking of general standards of beauty, it seems as if black beauty isn’t even on the scale of measurement. The beast has told us that we are irrelevant, but we are timeless. Perhaps this is why we were never included in the comparison because you can’t compare a beauty that’s beyond measure. Regardless of the color of beauty, we are all the same victim of the beast; it is up to us to first decide to not be victimized, recognize the natural beauty within ourselves and reflect it upon each other so that we can unite and overthrow the beast with our radiant beauty. After all, just as in the fairy tale, it was beauty who killed the beast. http://ayearoflivingadventurously.wordpress.com/2012/10/24/day-24-beauty-and-the-beast/

Name: Mary Podjasek Occupation: President, Diabetes Scholars Foundation One word to describe you: Passionate Hobbies: Cooking, running, sewing/quilting, reading, One thing you have learned in life: Things aren’t always what they seem to be Website: www.diabetesscholars.org The mission of the Diabetes Scholars Foundation is to: 1. Support activities related to education about diabetes in children 2. Fund scholarships for higher education for children with type 1 diabetes in the United States 3. Fund scholarships for activities related to diabetes education, including diabetes summer camps and diabetes education conferences, for both the child with diabetes and the child’s family 4. Work with schools and school districts to ensure that children with diabetes receive the support and care to which they are legally entitled (504 support and education) 5. Work with organizations both in and outside of the United States to provide children with diabetes access to diabetes education 6. Work with organizations both in and outside of the United States to strengthen ties between children with diabetes in the United States and children with diabetes in other countries 21>>> Organization

1. What prompted you to start your foundation? In 2004 a group of parents that have children with Type 1 diabetes created the Diabetes Scholars Foundation. Our goal was to lessen the burden of diabetes through education and give affected people the tools they need to deal with the disease. 2. What are some of the main goals for the organization? Our goals are to be able to bring all qualified families, young adults and adults with Type 1 diabetes that apply for our conference scholarship to a conference. Also, we want to be able to award college scholarships to all qualified candidates. We traditionally receive 650+ college scholarship application and would love to be able to award scholarships to all that meet our standards. 3. Education is key to helping others fight diabetes. How do you teach others about diabetes? Each year, Children with Diabetes hosts a spectacular diabetes conference where thousands of people come together. It’s an opportunity for individuals, impacted by diabetes, to increase their overall knowledge of diabetes management, receive up-todate research information and build a lifelong diabetes network. Unfortunately due to economic situations, some families will never have the ability to attend a Children with Diabetes conference and participate in this very unique experience. The Diabetes Scholars Foundation is committed to changing this by providing conference scholarships to families in need. For families dealing with economic hardship as well as a life threatening illness, the conference has both an immediate and long term impact on them. Comments from past recipients have been “this was life changing” and “we feel like we are part of a new family”. To date we have given over 300 families the opportunity to attend a diabetes education conference. 4. How does your foundation differ from other foundations? While the ultimate goal of anyone dealing with a diagnosis of Type 1 diabetes is a cure, we at the Diabetes Scholars Foundation believe we need to keep our kids healthy so that when a cure is found, they will be able to get it. The best way for that to happen is through education. We believe educating families with Type 1 diabetes is crucial to living a long and healthy life. Providing scholarships for families to attend diabetes education conferences changes their lives. In addition, we are the only foundation that offers college scholarships open to all students in the United States with Type 1 diabetes. In the past five years, we have awarded over $500,000 in college scholarships to students with Type 1 diabetes. 5. In your opinion, what is the difference between a vision and a mission? A mission is your purpose/objective of the organization and a vision is your dream/ hopes for the foundation. 6. If there was one thing you would like to improve about your foundation what would it be? Our biggest challenge is funding. Without continued support and growth, we are not able to carry out our mission and expand our outreach. 7. What are your future goals for the diabetes scholars foundation? Future goals include expanding our conference scholarships program. Future goals for our college scholarship include being able to offer college scholarships not just for students that are incoming freshmen but all college students as well as Masters and medical students.

Perfectly Pastel Makeup tips

Perfect Pastel Makeup Tips: Pastel colors have been all the rage for the last couple years with makeup! There are so many different colors that you can try but I’ve narrowed it down to my top three pastel picks that will look great on any skin tone. Lilac/lavender, minty green and sherbet orange are beautiful colors. Being completely honest it’s easy to overdo it with makeup and especially when adventuring out into colors. You want to still look natural with a pop of color. Makeup should not be distracting but enhancing! When wearing pops of color you have to think of the entire face, assuming you have you have foundation and/or concealer already applied. Foundation is completely optional but concealer at minimum is a great addition. There are a couple questions you should ask yourself. What’s going on my cheeks and lips as well? You don’t want your makeup to clash. Let’s get started with some simple easy to-do looks for our newbie’s or occasional makeup wearers. “Lilac or Lavender” … lilac/lavender eye shadow should be applied to the entire lid and crease of the eye, paired with a lilac or lavender lipstick in a matte (non shiny) finish on the lips is quite cute; don’t be afraid of color. Also for our non lipstick wearers try a lilac tinted lip gloss. Lastly, for a pop of color on the cheeks add rose or coral colored blush. Next up is a nice soft minty green... start by applying the color on the eye lid then the inner corner of the eye as well as your lower lash line and finish it up by adding black mascara for a dramatic effect! Pair the minty green eye look with coral blush and bronzer. Keep the lips a nude colored to play up the eyes. Last but not least get adventurous with a sherbet orange color on the eye lids and inner corners, coupled with an orange hued bronzer and a sheer orange gloss. These are some great pastel colors to get you started this spring and summer to help brighten up your look! Also please remember these looks don’t have to be achieved with high end products I shop everywhere makeup is sold (from Walgreens to department stores). So here’s to a fresh new look! Ahh Spring…tis the season where we say goodbye, good riddance and so long to winter and we say hello to flowers and beauty all in bloom!!! Just like the seasons change, your skincare, makeup and hair care should all follow suit and change as well. Today I am going to share with you some tips and tricks to help your beauty rountine spring in to action!!!

Tip #1 You should never use your winter skincare routine in

the spring/summer; doing so could over moisturize the skin causing breakouts, excess shine and oil… and who wants to look greasy in the summer??? Don’t let your shinny glow be mistaken for an oily no!!! Purchase an oil free moisturizer that will hydrate the skin without the oil slick!!! Your skin will be happy, matte and shine free!!! My summer’s blast from last year’s past is…Smashbox BB Cream!!! I just can’t BB without my BB cream…LOL. It is not just an oil free moisturizer with a SPF; it is also a primer that has great anti-aging skincare benefits that will keep me forever 21!!!

Tip #2 Cleansers, Exfoliators and Toners…oh my!!! These are 3 steps that will keep

your skin looking so fresh and so clean, clean as well as control the shine, help your skin stay smooth and vibrant!!! They will keep your moisturizer, SPF and foundation from separating and sitting on top of dull tired looking skin. To wake up the skin and give it an even tone, I prefer a 2 in 1 dual action cleanser/exfoliator because it is gentler (I am lazy…ssh, that is just between us) and I am less likely to over exfoliate and make my skin more sensitive to the sun (which I have totally done before and it was not pretty and neither was I) LOL. My go to product is the Oil-Free Acne Wash Daily Scrub by Neutrogena. It is a gentle scrub the removes the dirt, oil and impurities without over drying. My toner of choice is the new love of my life that I have recently discovered!!! I heart the First Aid Beauty (FAB) Facial Radiance Pads. They brighten, tone and exfoliate without burning or irritating my skin. They are also easy to use as each pad is saturated in a jar so you don’t overuse the product. Genius that deserves a gold star!!!

Tip #3 SPF, SPF, SPF and SPF!!! Protecting your skin against the bright radiant

spring/summer sun is a must as ALL skin tones can get sunburned!!! Please trust and believe, the sun does not discriminate; it believes in equality for all and sunburn is not a pleasant feeling!!! Trust me, I know. I have been there, done that and I have the t-shirt and this is not a club you want to join…. IJS!!! My fave is the Ultra Sheer Liquid Daily Sunscreen Broad Spectrum SPF 70. It is waterproof, sweat proof, oil-free and does not clog pores. It is does not leave that white residue which you find in most sunscreens (UGH), a little goes a long way and I can still get a little tan…okay more of a glow (you know what I mean)!!! Giggles

Tip #4 Makeup trends for spring 2013 straight

from NY Fashion week…Pouts are red, pink and plum, lashes are lush and brows are bold!!! Green and blue liners as well as shadows shape and brighten the eyes offering a reminiscent of circa 1980’s with Boy George and the Culture Club signing Karma Chameleon makeup and all. Can you say…throwback???

Some of my favorite colors are from Big Girl Cosmetics with the Vava Bloom Palette. This palette will have your eyes and cheeks ready, set and on trend to go!!! You can make your own runway come true 

Tip #5 Hairstyles are all about sleek slick back looks, ponytails galore or wavy hair worthy of summer waves crashing on the beach with summer accessories full of colorful headbands with the messy bun.

Since I have short sassy hair, I don’t a have go to that I would suggest for the above but I will tell you to care for your hair with heat protection, use a clarifying shampoo once a month or every two months to remove the build up from sweat, product buildup and the earth’s environments as well as style with care when using hair accessories by using products that will not pull or tug on the hair. These guidelines will keep your hair on your head and not on the floor (you can thank me later)!!! So now that you have my fabulous 5 tips to spring in to beauty, take a break from the leftover winter weather; spring in to action and let your beauty bloom…MUAH!!!

Hip Hop Hope <<< 31

My stage name is Ashley Ja Nae and I was born a star on September 3rd, 1990. My hometown is Charlotte NC by way of Maryland. I moved around a lot growing up in different counties of Maryland. Never knew my father. Met him and came to live with him in North Carolina when I was 15 years old that’s how I ended back up in Charlotte. I knew I was going to be a singer the first time I watched an awards show/ competition show and I felt this buzz in my body like I had to be doing exactly what I saw the people on TV doing, except my way. When people first see me, they think I may possibly come off as a joke because I laugh and act silly, but when they hear me sing, they are sure to take me more serious than ever. When I got pregnant at 19 years old and it seemed as if I turned into the person everybody didn’t want to be like, I almost felt like giving up. People were giving up on me left and right, but what kept me going was having my child and realizing that his life was so important to me. I needed to show him that no matter what mistakes you make or what people think about you, if you really want something you’ll go after it no matter what obstacles are in the midst. One song that describes me best is “I Am Superwoman” by Alicia Keys. I am a single mother who absolutely loves my son. I work hard, I sweat. I pay bills. I live my everyday life taking care of myself and my son with no help but God’s, no family in my reach, and a strong heart that knows the struggle isn’t going to last always :)

Now let’s talk about today’s music and what’s being playing on the radio. What do I want to change? Absolutely nothing. I just want to have my music played. I stand out amongst what is already going on. I love what’s playing on the radio now and I feel like I’d look to that as inspiration to stand out more, by adding my difference, flavor, and out of the box mentality. My favorite “old school” song that is still played on the radio is actually a go-go song I learned growing up on Maryland and it’s called “Overnight Scenario” because it just reminds me of how I grew up and the different things I snuck listening to because my mom was very religious and I had to sneak and listen to secular music. That was one of the songs and I actually just heard it last week on the radio and went banaaaaaanas in my car!! Two artists from 1950 to 1990 I would like to work with were Michael Jackson and now Usher Raymond because they both inspired me to love music. Anytime I hear or see a Michael Jackson song, I literally get an instant fire in my bones to sing. I love how I see myself in Usher in a lot of ways from the way he writes music to the way he sings from the heart; the way he performs from his heart and soul. I take great inspiration from the both of them but it’s definitely a long list that follow them as well from Beyonce to Christina Aguilera, Whitney Houston, and Mariah Carey to name a few. I feel that my music will be around for many years because I am so eclectic. I change, I am out of the box, and I don’t sit still physically as well as musically. The times change and so do I, even when they don’t, I’m still breaking out of the norm every way that I can. If I had the chance to sit down with someone from the older generation, I would ask for guidance on how to maintain the love for whatever passion I have for my career. As I get older, I don’t want to feel like I’m losing the fire that I once had for something I really loved such as being an artist. That is a feeling I never want to have because I yearn for this so much. The legacy I want to leave for the next generation of artists is to be exactly who they are. You feel so much more free, independent and happy when you can just be yourself and not what society tells you you’re gonna be. I am me. I’m goofy, silly as all outdoors, I’m clumsy, I talk loud and fast, love hard and roll my eyes a lot (LOL) and I refuse to let anybody change that :) My name is Ashley Ja Nae Smith and this has been a Mic Check.

Website: www.facesofmedia.com Company Mission Statement: Faces of Media is a Non-profit organization

designed to educate on the effects of negative media while enhancing self-esteem and leadership skills among youth and young adults.

1. What is Faces of MEdia?.

Faces of Media is a nonprofit organization that promotes, displays, and multiplies positive media. We use positive media to enhance self-esteem, build confidence, and restore self-worth.

2. How did you come up with the name?

I wanted a way to connect how media plays a part in how a lot of people view themselves . The name has two concepts: • First: There are so many negative images in media that leaves the world with a false representation of who we are. My desire is to see more media that represents a diverse population in a positive light. • Second: Media has such a powerful influence over the world that a lot of people get caught up in only being and doing those things. Instead of expressing individuality they become what media tells them to be, losing their own image or reflection of themselves. I can’t stress enough the importance of being yourself.

3. Media has such an impact on people these days. What do you think caused the change from what we saw in the early 90’s to what we see today? I think the audience plays a huge part. We have to realize that we have the power to raise the standard on what we see today. As long as the audience continues to be engaged then media will continue to create what sells.

4. What are your main goals for the organization?

Our goal is to raise awareness as well as inspire minds to create media that will leave a positive impact on the world.

5. How does your organization differ from other organizations that may be like yours? Faces of media has three divisions: • Power of Media sessions for youth ages 13-17: These sessions are designed to build character, leadership skills, and self-esteem. During these sessions the youth learn that there is power in knowing and expressing who they are. • College and young adult ages 18-24 desiring to create positive media. Participants will use knowledge & skills to complete specific projects that will be featured on our website, blog, and social sites. This is a great opportunity to gain exposure. • Call to Action: This division is for film producers, production companies, writers, directors, photographers, musicians, etc. to stand with us to change the face of media.

35 >>> Faces of Media

6. If you could change one thing about this company what would it be and why? Since it is fairly new, I would love for the organization to gain more exposure and partnerships.

7. What is your background and how did you progress to your present position with this organization?

I have a BA in Psychology and Human Services. I always had a desire for wanting to help people. I knew I wanted to work with the youth and help anyone recognize their full potential. I created Faces of Media because I dealt with trying to fit in, worrying about what others thought of me, and being afraid to express who I was. I have a strong passion for helping others recognize their worth, build confidence, and just love themselves. We were all created differently and we should embrace our uniqueness instead of criticizing the differences.

8. What do you think needs to change in the media as we go forward in the future that will have a positive impact on the youth?

A lot of today’s media glorify a certain lifestyle, behavior, or image. This sends a message to our youth that they have to be a certain size, dress a certain way, and have a certain amount of money in order to fit in. This can have a huge effect on self-esteem and confidence levels. There needs to be more inspiration and building up instead of tearing down. There definitely should be a lot more positive media displayed. There’s so much creativity around us to only limit ourselves to one type of media.

Name: Nadia Monsano & Alicia La Foucade Occupation: Co-Founders One word: EFFECTIVE Hobbies: Traveling Website: www.steptowardawareness.org Mission: Through our MAKING IT HAPPEN Programs and our specialized projects, we aim to bring communities together through social & economic initiatives, bridging the gap between today & the possibility of a brighter tomorrow.

1. Tell us a little about your company and how you came up with your name?

We were assisting a friend raise funds by planning a walk and while creating a site for online donations we at that moment decided to launch our own company to be able to assist even more persons like our friend. The name came about through this same event as part of the goal was to create more awareness through the walk, hence “Step Toward Awareness”.

2. Why doesn’t traditional fundraising work in your eyes anymore?

In light of the current state of the economy, people have become guarded with their income. As much as they may like to give, they still hold back. One now has to create fundraising events and or projects to give value to people’s “giving”, providing a sense of tangible giving so to speak.

3. Can you tell us about one of the fundraising events that you have done that has been successful?

“School to Success” is one of our events which will now be an annual event in as many states as we can provide our service to. Last year we hosted this event with two other non profit organizations and it was amazing. We were able to provide 300 backpacks filled with basic back to school items. The day was a family day, which included Zumba, Snack Bar, Face Painting, and motivational speeches by two special invited guests.

4. Helping others is something I love to do because it brings me joy to see smiles. Why do you want to help others and bring awareness to different causes?

To quote Dr Farrah Gray “why not me”. We have the power within ourselves to create effective change and as such we simply want to use ourselves as a vessel for positive change to as many as we can. The purpose brings the passion, the passion fires us and the success to our events brings a contented feeling of accomplishment no paid job could ever bring.

5. Fresh ideas keep people coming back for more. Can you give us a sneak peak of something you are working on for the future? Let’s just say it has something to do with the ocean, fashion & comedy all towards raising funds. :)

6. If you could change one thing about your organization what would it be and why?

There is nothing we would change about our organization, we are evolving and growing into our full purpose which does not require change but a willingness to continue learning and giving.

7. Events sometimes don’t go as planned how do you deal with things that don’t quite go your way?

We roll with it really, taking notes and learning from our mistakes. It is really another way for us to grow as a business and as business women. If something goes wrong while in the middle of an event, our team work steps into higher gear and we make the best of the situation making sure to still deliver the intended end result.

Fashion <<< 39

1) What does fashion mean to you?. Fashion for me has always been, taking items not particularly popular making them my own and making someone curious about where I purchased it. Fashion is also being able to wear what makes you happy and to have the CONFIDENCE to match ANY STYLE of FASHION!! 2) Do you think confidence should be exuded no mater what size you are? Most definitely. Now also believe with your size comes a responsibility: that is to present yourself well. To me presentation is everything-- I always refer to the Cosby Show Episode when they met Dabnus Brickey, how the family was disappointed because of the way they met Dabnus, Cliff compared him to the best cut steak sitting on the lid of a trash can..... If you present yourself wearing things that are not flattering then you will be just that unattractive, self-conscience and uncomfortable then that is the mood you will exhibit. 3) Tell me something about yourself, how you feel and why? I am a mom of 2 gorgeous girls who are considered thick and I find it necessary to let them know that we werent born this way if we arent going to change then be happy with it and represent our thickness well. In a world where what is considered normal sized is not the normal, I feel great. I am confident enough in myself to not allow the world’s view of the perfect size dictate how I feel about myself. I feel HAPPY. I feel happy because, I pray daily (at least once), when I look in the mirror I would date me, my smile makes others smile, my laugh is infectous and I vow to not allow the speed bumps in the world flip my day upside down. BREAK DOWN OF PIECES ARE ALL UNDER $100 1) Clothing Break down: Mint Green Jacket $20 (Simply Fashion) Denim Jumpsuit $39 (Ashley Stewart) Blue Suede Heels by City Street $20 (JCP) 2) Mint Green Jacket $20 (simply Fashion) Coral Sweater $18 (Lane Bryant Outlet) Madison Pants $49 (Lane Bryant ) Tan Peep Toe by Exhilaration $15 (Target) 3) Coral Sweater $18 (Lane Bryant OUtlet) RocAWear Leggings $13 (CitiTrend) Copper heels by DIBA $14 (Shoe Carnival) 4) Purpe Sweater $18 (Lane Bryant OUtlet) Gray Crops & Jacket $39 (Lane Bryant Outlet) Madden Girl Floral Heels $25 (TJ Maxx) As you can see I am a bargain shopper, UNLESS I feel as if there will not be any left. There is nothing better than pastel colors. For me they signify spring, warm weather, fun, sandals, etc. Another favorite of mine is finger nail polish and nail art.. I use to wear the long ghetto nail with designs on each finger. Although I no longer wear long nails I am still very much in love with designs on each finger. For this issue I decided to combine my favorite things: nail polish, nail art and pastel colors. I hope you enjoy! Here are some of my favorite colors and brands:

Here are some designs that can be done at home or the salon. They are just in time for the Easter holiday!
