Around 2019, the sewing room was closed down, as there were more orders coming in for blinds than for curtains. Elaine retired from professional sewing, and Bernie started to install less. After 9 years of designing, measuring and sewing many different custom projects, she decided to go on her own. Plett Custom Window Coverings was started in 1994, by purchasing the sewing machines from Ray and moving them to her home. For many years since then, her home was filled with buzzing and humming from the machines working under her nimble fingers. Much of the fabric was cut, woven, seamed and fitted to make drapery, bedding, and valances. Elaine kept busy in the sewing room, while Heidi did the sales, marketing and bookkeeping for the business. Heidi also ventured into more of the commercial side of blinds, working alongside companies to put coverings in apartment buildings and business offices.
