My Friend Huntingdon’s local magazine

Hello! I need some help from the Sudoku

fans among My Friend readers, I've been

told the Sudokus are too easy! Can I have

some feedback from you, please? Let me

know at the email address in the red box at the foot of the page, if you'd like our sudoku to be more challenging! Great Stukeley

This issue's cover shot was taken by myself

from

Beech

Avenue,

Great

Stukeley. According to our tree expert, Dan Bousfield of Bousfield Tree and Landscape, it's a copper beech. What a beauty!

Please have a look at the report on page 24 about the charity event, St Ives Festival of Motorcycles. I was on the organising committee and would like to thank members for a superb effort and for being good

friends and to the people who came, thank you for putting your cash into the collection buckets and supporting the charities.

This week on page 18 we have a short story from Lynn Batten, whose novel 'The 07.45 - Tales From The Back Of A Bus' is available in paperback and kindle.

Lastly, we welcome Bartlett Automotive of Huntingdon, our new back cover

sponsor. Its great to have you with us!

The Kitten's Whiskers “Thanks for rescuing the kitten” shouted Monique out of the car window as she passed me in the lane. “So glad its ok” I shouted back, this was the first I had heard about its fate and I continued on my way, happy in the knowledge that all’s well that ends well, when it struck me to wonder how on earth she knew about my involvement in the incident. I was putting out the recycling box at the end of our lane, when my distracted mind registered the sound of a cat crying in the hedge over the road, it wasn’t until I was getting back in the car (longish way to the end of our lane) that my brain engaged and I realised that this was a bit unusual. Sighing wearily, I exited the car, crossed the road and peered into the hedge much to the interest of passing traffic. The road at the end of the lane is a country road, but fairly busy at that time of the day. After spending some time talking to the hedge in a coaxing and wheedling fashion, it rewarded my efforts by suddenly expelling a wild eyed and bristling tabby kitten. I tried to pick it up, “no way” it yowled and fled back to the spikey embrace of the hedge. Well I was involved now and couldn’t leave the ungrateful thing to its own paranoid devices and the dangers

18

a story by Lynn Batten

of the busy evening road, so I had another word with the hedge and this time when the kitten eventually appeared I managed to herd it some way up a much quieter side road. Where I gently tried to convince it that there was nothing scary about me. Every time I walked towards it, it ran away and jumped into the nearest hedge, it certainly loved hedges. Every time I walked away it jumped out of the hedge and ran towards me crying “don’t leave me, don’t leave me.” That kitten is one conflicted animal. Eventually I had to leave it, it was getting dark! I had done all I could but hours later was still worried about the annoying little beast. On the way home I had asked my nearest neighbour if she had lost a kitten, she asked someone, who asked someone and eventually… happy ending! It took Monique hours to catch it though! The jungle drums of community in action, don’t you just love them?

Charity Event

St Ives Festival of Motorcycles

St Ives Festival of Motorcycles committee present cheques to representatives of MAGPAS and Royal British Legion Bikers with St Ives Mayor Phil Pope.

Charity Cheque Presentation

More than 3,500 motorcycles were counted in to the main bike park in St Ives on the 25th June, it was an amazing sight to see. Families and bikers from all over the county and further afield came to watch celebrity motorcyclists Steve Parrish and Rhys Lawrey chatting about their exploits on the stage. There were live bands

entertaining the crowds throughout the day. In the afternoon Mr Parrish awarded trophies to winners in the showbike competition. Many businesses and

motorcycle dealerships were represented in the stands lining the market square and the Two Brothers Racing Stunt Team performed in the cattle market car park. Everyone who performed, marshalled, carried collection buckets and organised the event volunteered their time so that all the money raised went to the charities The Poppy Appeal and MAGPAS Air Ambulance, whose volunteers were also present on the day. A total of ÂŁ7,150 was raised and shared between the two.

To see videos and photographs from the day visit the Facebook page at @stivfom or the website, www.sifom.org

The committee are already working on plans for St Ives Festival of Motorcycles 2018 and would be grateful for your support. Please contact Simon@sifom.org to get involved.
