Hello . . .

Welcome to our Autumn edition.

8

If like me, you love a good celebration then we have a few dedicated pages to just this. Whether you are planning your wedding, mother of the bride or indeed page just lucky enough to be invited to a party, we have some great ideas from local 26 businesses in our feature ‘All things bride and beautiful’. Our Shop Local campaign has two great examples of local businesses that will help you adorn your home. My Friend visits Cambs Lock Antique & Collectables in Huntingdon and takes a journey back in time to offer you a shopping experience that may be prescriptively good for you. We also meet Sarah at Vintage Grace on page 28, who can not only transform any piece of furniture but has lots of wonderful products to offer you in St Ives. It will get you thinking about your (dare I say it?) Christmas shopping…there, it’s out there!

Win page

14

Sticking to the celebration theme, our competition this issue offers you a chance to win a Pandora bracelet from Piggotts the Jewellers, we also have got £50 of home improvement vouchers courtesy of Peter Lane and Partners on page 35. There are details of two charity events going on and then our usual favourites - a recipe from The George in Buckden, a book review, Law Matters, puzzles and The Gardener gives us some seasonal tips for planting. Plus Danielle’s blog is nearing the final chapter in her bid to get fit and get hitched - the big event is only a couple of months away. Once you’ve entered our competitions, visited our local shops and planted your fruits, it will be time for our next issue when the bells will be ringing out . . .

Wedding

Booking your

rapher Wedding Photog our wedding is the biggest Yinvested day of your life, you’ve so much time, money,

and emotion into your perfect day and you deserve to have photographs to reflect this. Fantastic wedding pictures keep your memories alive, they are something to truly cherish, forever. So how do you choose the right photographer? Here are some good tips to consider: Choose a professional for professional results. Any wedding photographer who is properly qualified will advertise this fact on their websites and will gladly provide their qualifications which, if desired, can be checked and verified with their professional Institute. It will also mean that they are fully insured. Asking a friend or budding hobbyist to photograph your wedding will usually end in disappointment. Just because you hold a fine pen does not make you a Shakespeare, the same applies to cameras! ALWAYS meet your photographer before booking. Look at their work and get a sense of their personality. It’s so important to choose someone that compliments your personality, remember, they will be spending most of the day with you. AVOID cutting your budget on photography. You generally get what you pay for, as the saying goes: Good is not cheap, and cheap is not good. BOOK early to escape disappointment, the best photographers go quickly. Make a list and ask lots of question, you deserve to know what you’ll be getting for your money. If you contemplate all these factors and book the right photographer for you, then you can be assured of some beautiful and lasting wedding memories. celebration the venue is a Faboutorbiganyaexpense. Most couples spend third of their budget on their

venue, so you want to be sure that you really love yours! Once you have your venue booked, you will find that everything else you require for your special day naturally falls into place. A real gem in the heart of Huntingdon is Hinchingbrooke House and it provides an ancestral setting for any celebration. Once the home of the Cromwell Family and the Earl of Sandwich, Hinchingbrooke House is a historic tudor mansion set within large grounds. Exclusive use of the house is granted when booking - with a choice of several entertaining areas plus the extensive gardens and terrace - this is an impressive bonus. The magnificent stairwell leads upstairs to a reception room and balcony overlooking the terrace which is available to use for dressing, photo opportunities or as a quiet retreat. With inhouse hospitality facilites and car parking it ticks a lot of boxes. Popular spaces get booked up months, or even years in advance. If you’ve got your heart set on a particular date, it’s especially important to move quickly and claim your dream venue before someone else does. To book a viewing at Hinchingbrooke House please contact the Hospitality Office on 01480 375678. Please mention My Friend Magazine when making all enquiries.

Top Tips

for dressing up!

Give yourself time when going to buy an occasion outfit, you will be amazed how time flies when you start trying things on.

2 3

Make sure you feel comfortable in what you wear, it will give you confidence.

Think about where the wedding or occasion is. You would wear something completely different to a beach wedding in the Caribbean and a traditional English church wedding.

4

Talk to the bride and the other mother before you go shopping to avoid any upset after you’ve made your purchase.

5

Be prepared to try different outfits, you may fixed ideas but sometimes you can surprise yourself after all it is not something you wear every day and what may look good in an image might not suit your shape or personality. Your hat and shoes don’t have to be the same colour as your outfit. It can look very chic having everything matching but you can be co-ordinated with different coloured accessories to your outfit.

Avoid downturn brimmed hats as it is a photographers nightmare and you will end up with shade covering your face.

8

6 7

Undergarments are just as important as your outfit. Having the correct fitting bra can transform the shape of an outfit.

9

Heels do make a difference to an outfit. Even the slightest heel is better than flats.

Enjoy the whole experience, it should be fun and is all part of the build up to big day

#Get fit and get hitched! hen I started this journey W to lose weight and get fit for my wedding, I had previously

felt it was impossible to do. I made so many excuses and felt really defeated, which is not like me in every other aspect of my life. I am a person who tries hard to succeed in all ventures and will always be positive about challenges. I feel proud of myself that I am now succeeding at losing weight and that I’m letting go of all the excuses to eat unhealthily and put off exercise ‘til ‘next week’. When I realised that it was important for my health and my happiness, I could finally find a reason to make these changes. It does take effort though. Sometimes just a little and sometimes it takes a huge amount of effort. The most amount of effort I put in, is when I’m exercising. But all the effort is worth it and I feel the best I’ve felt in years.

My usual week includes two Zumba sessions, one fitness pilates session, and at least five, 30 minute dog walks. I also do a personal training session with Lee at The Unit Fitness, if we can fit it in.I am very active now. I never thought I would become as active and maintain it for long but I really do love the exercise. The days when I’m doing Zumba I wake up happy because I know I’m going to shake all my wobbly bits and have so much fun messing about with my bestie; the music is so energising. If you haven’t tried Zumba you are totally missing out! This new found fitness and energy levels I have from exercising regularly means I am more capable www.myfriendmagazine.co.uk

of playing sports with my boys or just keeping up with them in general. As it’s the school summer holidays, they have thoroughly enjoyed coming along to my fitness sessions. though maybe its more to do with being allowed to play games on my iPad or mobile phone. The summer holidays can be quite a stressful time as a parent. There’s a lot of time to fill with activities and entertaining the children. There are also more meal and snack times to think about and a different routine. It’s easy to fall into bad eating habits under these conditions, especially if your not organised and prepared. I’ve made time to make a variety of homemade soups, as an alternative to sandwiches for lunch. It makes the difference when I come back from a workout and I’m feeling famished - to have a quick healthy option means I’m much less likely to reach for the biscuits! My next challenge will be to continue losing weight and keeping fit whilst our family life changes significantly in September. My eldest son is starting secondary school and I’ll also be starting a full time degree in Horticulture Garden Design, commuting to Nottingham three days a week. This is going to be my biggest challenge so far - juggling family life, commuting, studying and keeping my focus on staying healthy. This will possibly be the most demanding few months of my life but I’m not doing it on my own. Lee and I are a great team and I know we’ll succeed. Here is a little update on my progress so far: Start weight 18st 6lbs Current weight 14 st 13lbs Total weight loss so far 3 1/2 stones Target weight 13st 5lbs Thanks for reading and your continued support x Read how Danielle moves closer to her wedding day goal with her blog in the next issue. Post messages of support on Facebook via My Friend Magazine or Twitter via @myfriendmag. Or tweet Danielle at: @dcolletteh @SimplyFitLee including the hashtag: #GetFitAndGetHitched. Consumer

I

f, like me, you find a rummage therapeutic, then I have found the perfect place for you to have a restorative mooch. Huntingdon has a High Street, superstores and a few independent retailers but right next to the bus station, on St Mary’s Street, is Cambs Lock Antiques & Collectables; a hidden delight, filled with bric-a-brac, memorabilia, antiques and upcycled wonderment. An old, misshapen and cave-like building adds to its charm and a walk around these environs help you to soak up the stories of yesteryear and experience a quiet potter that removes all ills. This could just be me, but correct me if I am wrong if you don’t look at your watch when you browse. Over the years, I have come to rely on Cambs Lock for that whiff of nostalgia, which, now that older generations have passed, I don’t always feel privy to. There are pockets of the building that remind me of walking down the brick scented alley-way to my grandparents backyard. Some stalls akin to my grandmother’s dressing table, where I would test sample potions from a bygone era, puffing powder puffs until they tickled my nose and

study vintage jewels caressed in silk laden boxes that were all part of a moment in history, of a time purchased and worn for special occasions. The same experience occurs here. And when you happen upon the military memorabilia, you feel as though you are standing in the bunks of history, a museum-like atmosphere that frees you from the here and now. Personally, I like to take the same route each time I enter, a creature of habit and perhaps a little superstitious but ultimately because I like the journey that leads me to the pockets I like best. Firstly, I like to browse the brand new trinkets in the cubby hole at the front, then, to enter in and out of the small nooks dressed like miniscule drawing rooms and when followed, weave you through the lowly lit downstairs. My path then leads upstairs and round and upstairs again. But take a different set of stairs and I am in danger of missing the tower of whimsies for my friend’s daughter’s collection, or, the route from old to the upcycled and the familiar, soothing smell of paint and wax that hits me as I enter. The change in pace is what is most charming. This is so different to online purchasing - of buying predictably

and efficiently - here I seek out a quirky gift for friends who have everything or shop for the dusty corner of my house that needs illumination. I sometimes find that a good rummage does not always unearth that elusive treasure you don’t know you are looking for. But other times you strike gold. Once, I discovered a painting of a girl dressed in blue; for me, it had the feeling of the Dutch masters about it. Her gaze locked on to mine, the palette was muted, her gown simple. I found her occupying my thoughts for the rest of that day. I chanced to see if she would still be there a few days later; luckily, there on ‘HOGWARTS’ SIGN £31 the wall, she sat. Now, hung in my living room, her blue eyes gaze softly on anyone who enters. 2 Now onto the weather…….I wonder why it always rains when I visit. The building knows. It wants me to ‘HOME’ LIGHT £20 dwell there just a little bit longer. Even the sound of the raindrops are lyrical on patches of worn out roof and ironwork. Woe betide anyone who enters these premises in a rush. Shopping should be an experience, it should arouse the senses and be authentic enough to inspire and fill you with promise. And, once done so, with whispering magic usher you out into the rain feeling quite transformed. As effective as an apothecarys tonic. Cambs Lock Antiques & Collectables has its own car park at the front of the building. Please call Paula for more information on 01480 431 142. Open daily from 9am - 5pm, 10am - 4pm on Sundays. Consumer my travels to St Ives, I met Sarah at her shop OfeelnVintage Grace, who has created an environment I very at home in. Having met Sarah previously, I had a recent serendipitous moment. I asked her to keep an eye out for a dressing table for my daughter. In an instant I had a reply saying she had one and could paint it any pantone colour required. Thus ended my very long search. My daughter is now the proud owner of a blue/grey wooden dressing table that Sarah has lovingly restored. This is a first class service. Sarah has a natural eye for beautiful things or sees the potential to make something more stunning. Not only that, she wants to share this and inspire others. Her chalk painting workshops have added a real energy to the business. Instruction on how one can apply chalk paint to almost anything inanimate sounds just the thing (note to self - must remove husband before embarking on project). What you may not realise is this is not her only job. Sarah (and husband Mark) have jobs elsewhere and she is also a working mum, her shop lovingly named after her daughter Grace. Where does she find the time? Despite all of this, they now offer online enquiries, home and garden services as well as painting commissions and bespoke made to order gifts. Vintage Grace is one of my favourite haunts. Sarah and

assistant Heather, welcome you in like an old friend. I can shuffle around the store and have a natter whilst gathering treasure. I simply want it all transported to my home. In fact, it is so good here, I almost don’t want to tell you about it. However, everyone should have a dressing table moment . . I urge you to call Sarah or peek inside to see if you can experience one. Next chalk workshops are Sun 13th and Sat 19th Sept, phone or email to book a place. www.vintagegrace.co.uk 12 Cromwell Mews, St Ives PE27 5HJ 01480 497 100

Book review

The Lie by C L Taylor of friends decide to take the trip of AFourgroup a lifetime away from their humdrum lives. girls who have been friends since university

decide upon Kathmandu and make their way to a spiritual retreat that has cracks in it from the start. The story flits between present day Bude, and 5 years previously, in Kathmandu. The main female character, Jane, struggles when her past begins to catch up with her. Having changed her name and built a new life working at an animal sanctuary, facebook messages start to appear that seep fear into her contented world. Taylor’s account is slow to build the mystery surrounding the trip, but give it time and the book builds pace, the characters and events intensify until, three quarters of the way through, you cannot put it down. This is a psychological thriller, the simplicity of its foundation is terrifying. Taylor uses their friendship and the weaknesses in their different personalities to breakdown their intimacy. She introduces new affiliations that begin to threaten their bond and it is

Leisure

scary how easily this is achieved. Isaac, the group leader becomes a man you loathe from the very beginning and you are left wondering how he has wielded such power. The instinct that should have kicked in, the ‘not wanting to let the group down’ mentality that prevents all sense of reasoning or departure, is carefully orchestrated to build tension throughout, as they become further entrenched in the community there. The location too, is remote and away from any civilisation and the hopelessness of their situation is therefore made convincing. The conclusion questions if another destination had been chosen for their trip, would any of this have happened. Yet, as a group of friends, was there always going to be this day of reckoning? They learn a lot about who they are and about each other, in ways they would never have imagined.

LADIES AND GENTLEMEN . . .

Hollywood is coming to town! here’s a Tenergy wonderful at the

Primary Breast Cancer Support Group in Huntingdon, as the women who attend are being glamorously made over for their new fund raising calendar appropriately named ‘Hollywood or Bust’. Anna Pasquale Photography, Ramsey, has teamed up with Barnetts Hair Co, Ramsey, and Hannah Spendelow Make-up, in March, to photograph and style these brave, inspirational ladies into their chosen Hollywood legend. Local businesses have also stepped forward to support the calendar by sponsoring each month. This sponsorship covers the cost of the printing ensuring 100% of the profits go to charity. The calendar is about representing femininity and strength and will feature head and shoulder shots of the ladies accompanied with a powerful Hollywood quote. Photoshoots have taken place throughout August and early September, and the calendars will go on sale in October to coincide with Breast Cancer Awareness month. Within three days of opening their Facebook Hollywood or Bust page they have received nearly 700 ‘likes’ and support is pouring in from all over the world. This page is not only a platform to promote the calendar but a great opportunity to make everybody breast aware.

GET TO KNOW YOUR BREASTS, CHECK THEM REGULARLY, AND REPORT ANY UNUSUAL CHANGES TO YOUR DOCTOR.

The Facebook page will be constantly keeping you up to date with the calendar progress, the launch, and where the calendars can be purchased. The Primary Breast Cancer Support Group is based at the Woodlands Centre in Hinchingbrooke Hospital, Huntingdon, and is run by Lorraine Walker, a Macmillan Breast Care Nurse Consultant, and Mel Robinson, Macmillan Breast Care Nurse Specialist. Together they provide much needed support and advice for women coping with all stages of treatment and recovery in Breast Cancer. The group meets up every first Wednesday of each month between 7 - 9pm. Lorraine says, “This Breast Cancer group was set up about eight years ago. It helps ladies to meet other women in a similar situation so that they can support one another at a difficult time. There are rarely tears at the group, but much laughter. Having events like the photo shoot is very important. It gives the ladies a real boost, helps them to feel feminine, and creates bonding and friendships. I have raised thousands of pounds over the years, and, whilst it is good to raise money, the events are so much about a community spirit and solidarity. We are a good team together and we are really excited to see the calendar.” Nurse Mel Robinson, who helps lead the monthly support group, says: “Any funds raised from the calendar will be put back into the group for educational days to help support women throughout and beyond their treatment.” Anyone interested in supporting the calendar, or can offer a service that could benefit the group can contact Mel Robinson or Lorraine Walker on 01480 363 516. Alternatively, you can follow them on Twitter and Facebook: @HOBcalendar Hollywood or Bust

Top guitarist gigs for children’s hospice charity guitarist ranked in the top 100 acoustic guitarists Achildren’s will be performing in St Ives in aid of a local hospice charity.

The special gig featuring American singer songwriter, Brooks Williams, will be held on Thursday 24th September at the Dolphin Hotel in London Road, St Ives, in aid of East Anglia’s Children’s Hospices (EACH). The amazing Brooks Williams is ranked as one of the Top 100 Acoustic Guitarists. He writes groove-laden songs and delivers them with an easy-going vocal style and monstrous guitar chops. Walking the line between blues and Americana, Williams has worked stages worldwide for over 25 years, amassing a staggering back-catalogue of songs, recordings and tales. With nearly 20 CDs to his name, and more on the way, this Statesboro Georgia native is, according to fRoots, “Americana at its finest!” This exciting evening, which starts at 8pm with doors opening at 7.15pm, has been organised by the St Ives & Huntingdon Friends of EACH - a volunteer group raising funds and awareness for the charity. Beccy Gillings, EACH Cambridgeshire Fundraiser, said: “I’m delighted the St Ives & Huntingdon Friends of EACH are

organising this event. This is the second time Brooks has agreed to perform in aid of EACH with the first sell-out concert taking place in 2013. We are so lucky to have a second evening, and I’m really looking forward to seeing him perform again – the last evening had a fantastic atmosphere and I’m sure this year will be the same! We’d also like to say a big thank you to the Dolphin Hotel for providing the venue free of charge. As a local charity, we rely on public donations, and need to raise £16,000 a day, every day of the year to continue our services caring for children and young people across Cambridgeshire with life-threatening conditions. Funds raised from the gig will make a real difference.” The charity concert is being held on Thursday 24th September at the Meadow Suite at the Dolphin Hotel, St Ives. Doors open at 7.15pm and the gig will start at 8pm. Tickets cost £10, and there will be a raffle on the night to raise more funds for EACH. Tickets are available to purchase in St Ives at Time for Health in Station Road or by contacting Tony Reynolds on 07857 600 943. Tickets will also be available to purchase on the door.

Law Matters

Legal

By Wills Jacobsen

“Bona Vacantia”, broadly means “ownerless goods”, or in the context of an intestate estate, “no heirs”. Such estates arise because despite every effort by solicitors and the Law Society in the UK to convince people to make a will, the majority of citizens end up never getting Clare Wills around to this simple task. When you die without a will you die “intestate”. In small families that get on well this is not a problem as the next of kin are known and can work together to organise death registration, the funeral and the collection and disposal of assets to the correct surviving family members. However, for people who die with no obvious family dealing with these estates can open up, at best, a whole new world which few are aware of, and, at worst, a can of worms which is difficult and costly to deal with. Currently over 14,000 estates are being looked after by HM Government Legal Department. This department is known as “Bona Vacantia” or BV. BV have estates referred to them by many different sources including nursing homes, lawyers, coroners and the bereavement offices of local town and city councils or hospitals. Where there is no family, funerals and cremations are organised by the local bereavement service, which usually pay for a very basic burial or cremation. In truth there may be entitled heirs for each BV estate but these heirs could be anywhere in the world, or, more commonly, just down the road. In all cases the value of a BV estate is not known until claimed, but we are aware that over 3,000 estates are known to be worth over £15,000 and a few are even worth many millions. We will all no doubt be aware of “Heir Hunting”, popularised by the BBC TV series “Heir Hunters”, whereby heirs to intestate estates held by BV are tracked down on contingency commission based contracts. However this industry is not regulated and there is a wide range of differing quality in probate research. Due to this the Heir Hunters Association

was established in 2009 to educate new researchers to cope with increased demand. An increasing number of heirs “self-claim” but are generally oblivious to legal obligations when faced with tracing others that may be entitled to share in a BV estate. This is because, contrary to popular belief, claiming an estate does not mean all the money is yours. There is a drive to encourage more people to make a Will for the reasons stated above. BV estates cost money to administer, and where “Heir Hunters” become involved the commission’s payable can run to thousands. Where you have no family you can make a Will to benefit friends and/or charities if you wish. Where you do have family you should never leave the matter to chance. A Will is as important as your life insurance policy - it means your loved ones are protected and provided for after your death. And for all of you getting married – remember your marriage will revoke your existing Will! Contact Clare Wills for advice about any of the above areas on 01487 842 789.

The Road to Renewal Challenge 2015 a year of

Reinvigorating Trust

Take the first step! Imagine the excitement of a new start: a past that throws no shadows; the possibility of a different future from the one that you feared. The first step is to clarify what are your priorities and goals – and, importantly, to know why they are driving your life’s decisions. Our 2020 Vision: The Road to Renewal is a focus on positive change that transforms our communities to mend “broken Britain”.

Dr Chan Abraham Group Chief Executive

48

Since March 2000 we have been building a team of people who, daily inspired in their work, seek consistently to give excellent service to our customers. This energises our residents, business partners and the wider community and helps us all find a sense of purpose, hope and fulfilment. As we change, transformation occurs and a brighter future becomes reality.
