One of the most popular questions today is “are we alone in the universe?” Believe it or not, you’re in the minority if you believe that absolutely no intelligent life exists in the universe. In the United States alone, at least half of all Americans say that we’re not alone in the universe. Fifty percent of Americans already believe that there is some form of life on other planets, while only seventeen percent think that there isn’t. A quarter of Americans believe that intelligent extraterrestrial visitors have already come to Earth and have been doing so Please see our ad on page 18 for a long time.

Liquor seized by rCMP that was destined for dry communities A vehicle was stopped on Highway 6 for a routine verification. The driver advised the officer that there was liquor in the vehicle that belonged to his passenger. A search of the passenger located small amounts of cocaine and marijuana, both packaged for sale. A subsequent search of the vehicle also yielded 24 bottles of liquor. Ten days later, on Highway 373, another vehicle was stopped by officers for speeding. During the course of the vehicle stop, the passenger told officers that he was transporting liquor. RCMP report that in the first incident, 22-yearold Ray Ross was arrested and is facing numerous charges including transporting liquor to where it may not lawfully be kept. All items were destined for Cross Lake, a dry reserve. In the second incident, 33-year-old John George Queskekapow was arrested and is facing numerous liquor-transportation related charges. All items were destined for Norway House, a dry reserve.

Pedestrian dies after being struck by vehicle in norway House On June 1, 2015, at about 11:30pm, RCMP responded to a report of a collision between an SUV and a pedestrian on Paupanekis Point Road in Norway House, Manitoba. Initial police investigation shows that a vehicle was traveling south on Paupanekis Point Road when it struck with a pedestrian. The 24year-old male pedestrian from Norway House was transported to hospital by ambulance where he was later pronounced deceased. RCMP report that the driver of the vehicle involved, a 41-year-old Norway House woman, did not suffer any injuries. At this time, alcohol is believed to be a contributing factor in the collision. An RCMP Forensic Collision Reconstructionist is assisting with the ongoing investigation.

Winnipeg police search for high-risk sex offender WINNIPEG — A high-risk sex offender who has been in and out of jail for years is once again wanted by police. Winston George Thomas, 38, was released from Headingley Correctional Centre on May 6 and failed to comply with court orders in the past three weeks. Winnipeg police and the RCMP are asking for the public’s help in locating him. Thomas is 5’9? tall, weighs 240 pounds with

black hair and brown eyes. Thomas has a long history of offenses over the past eight years. The 38-year-old has been convicted of two counts of sexual assault, two counts of assault, aggravated assault, and has incurred convictions for forcible entry and six convictions for failing to comply with his probation orders.

In 2007 Thomas was convicted of sexually assaulting a 13-year-old girl. Thomas and two others met the girl at a Winnipeg shopping centre, took her to a home where alcohol and marijuana were consumed and prevented her from leaving. Thomas then sexually assaulted her and was later arrested. The last time he got out of jail was in December 2014 but was re-arrested on January 15 after breaching the conditions of his probation and getting drunk.

The investigation has revealed that a minor altercation occurred between a 16-year-old male student and 17-year-old male former student on the grounds of Kelvin High School. The 16-year-old male involved disengaged at which time a third male intervened. During that time the third male allegedly stabbed 17-year-old, Brett BOURNE causing critical injuries. He was later pronounced deceased in hospital. As a result of the incident area schools were placed into lockdown. Patrol and members of the Tactical Support Team secured the area. Numerous individuals were identified and interviewed throughout the evening by members of the Homicide Unit. As a result of those interviews, a 17-year old male was identified as a suspect and subsequently arrested in relation to the homicide. The 17-year-old male youth has been charged with 2nd Degree Murder due to his alleged involvement.

rCMP investigate break and enter on Hudson Bay rail property The Pas RCMP are seeking public assistance with an investigation involving a recent commercial break and enter, mischief and motor vehicle

theft incidents. On Saturday, May 23, 2015, at approximately 2:50am, The Pas RCMP received a call of a motor vehicle collision near the 300 block of Hogan Avenue in the Town of The Pas.

Police say that a Hudson Bay Rail (HBR) Company Hi-Rail truck collided with a hydro pole after damaging two parked vehicles. The occupant(s) of the truck fled the scene in a second HBR Hi-Rail truck prior to police arrival. RCMP learned that both HBR vehicles were stolen earlier that morning. Manitoba Hydro crews worked to restore power and made repairs. No injuries were reported. The second HBR Hi-Rail truck was recovered later that day. During the investigation, RCMP officers attended the Hudson Bay Rail Yard in The Pas and discovered that a break and enter had occurred to an office building and additional damages had been done to four other HBR vehicles at that location. The Pas RCMP and its Forensic Identification Section continue to investigate.

RCMP are asking anyone with Information connected to these incidents, to contact The Pas RCMP at 204-627-6204 or CrimeStoppers anonymously at 1-800-222-8477. You can also submit a secure tip online at www.manitobacrimestoppers.com or text TIPMAN plus your message to CRIMES(274637).

Manitoba woman awakes to honking, realizes bear cub behind wheel of her truck PEGUIS, Man. - A Manitoba woman who was awoken by the sound of her truck's horn honking was in for a real surprise when she saw who was sitting behind the wheel. Turns out a bear cub had crawled inside to get at a banana that had been left inside. Anita Hudson told Medua reporters there were three bruins in all — a mother and two cubs. Her daughter accidentally left the window on the truck open, and the bears must have smelled the piece of fruit. But though he got inside the cub couldn't get continued on page 4

rCMP arrest Winnipeg man on suspicion of possible terrorist plans WINNIPEG - RCMP have arrested a Winnipeg man on the suspicion that he may carry out terrorist activities or help a terrorist group. Aaron Daniel Driver, 23, was arrested after a raid Thursday in a suburban home. He appeared briefly in court Friday, where police filed an application for a peace bond that could impose limits on Driver's activities. He is being kept in custody until his next court appearance Tuesday. The RCMP have not charged Driver with a criminal offence,

but allege in provincial court documents that they have reasonable grounds to believe he "will participate in or contribute to, directly or indirectly, the activity of a terrorist group for the purpose of enhancing the ability of any terrorist group to facilitate or carry out a terrorist activity." The Mounties refused to provide more details and would not confirm published reports that Driver's arrest is connected to a social media account under the name Harun Abdurahman. In February, the Toronto Star reported that Abdurahman called last October's attack on Parliament Hill by Michael Zehaf-Bibeau "justified" retaliation for Canadian military aggression against Islamic State. The newspaper reported that Abdurahman was an online alias. Neither a lawyer who appeared on Driver's behalf nor the Crown attorney on the case returned messages seeking comment. Amarnath Amarasingam, a post-doctoral fellow at Dalhousie University who studies radicalization and terrorism, said Driver posted for at least several months under the Abdurahman Twitter handle, which has since been taken down. Amarasingam said Friday he has talked to Driver's father. He said Driver's Twitter posts displayed a dislike of Canada and a desire to move overseas. "He started to feel like he didn't really fit in here very well and he wanted to be in a more Muslim country," Amarasingam said. Under a peace bond, people can be required simply to keep the peace and be of good behaviour for a year. However, judges can also impose conditions such as wearing an electronic monitoring device, observing a curfew, or remaining within the city or country. People who refuse to agree to the terms or violate them can be jailed for up to one year. Jeremy Laurin, press secretary to Public Safety Minister Steven

Blaney, said in a statement Friday that the threat of jihadi terrorists is real in Canada. "The first duty of any government is to ensure the safety of its citizens," said Laurin. "That is why our government has tabled the Anti-Terrorism Act ... which enhances the ability of our police officers to detain suspected terrorists before they can harm Canadians." There have been protests against Bill C51, with opponents saying it would allow the government to stifle protest and dissent, and would infringe upon Canadians' civil liberties and right to privacy. The wide-ranging bill would give police much broader powers and give new powers to Canada's spy agency.

Manitoba moving to regulate use & sales of electronic cigarettes WINNIPEG - Manitoba has introduced legislation that would regulate the use and sale of electronic cigarettes. The proposed law would prohibit selling e-cigarettes to minors and prohibit use in indoor public places such as schools, hospitals, malls, restaurants and indoor workplaces. Healthy Living Minister Deanne Crothers says the aim is to minimize health risks to children and bystanders. The government acknowledges that some people use the devices to help them quit smoking and would allow customers to test products at specialty shops.

MAnITOBA gOVErnMEnT InTrODUCES LEgISLATIOn THAT WOULD TOUgHEn LAWS AIMED AT IMPAIrED, HIgH-rISK DrIVErS Proposed Safer Roads Act Would See Increased Costs for Distracted Driving: Minister Mackintosh High-risk drivers would face stiffer consequences, including increased costs of up to $3,200, for their actions under proposed amendments to the Highway Traffic Act and the Drivers and Vehicles Act, Attorney General Gord Mackintosh announced today. “The introduction of the safer roads act sends a strong message that dangerous and illegal driving behaviours, such as driving while impaired by drugs or alcohol or committing other serious driving-related offences that put others at risk, are not acceptable and will not be tolerated,” said Minister Mackintosh. “While Manitoba has made positive progress in reducing impaired-related collisions and deaths, we are committed to going even further in the battle against impaired drivers because even one collision or fatality caused by an impaired driver is one too many.”

The proposed act would result in the following amendments to the Highway Traffic Act that would specifically target drivers who make the choice to drive while impaired: Increased immediate roadside driver’s licence suspension for first-time low-blood alcohol concentration (0.05 to 0.08) and drug-impaired offenders to three days from the current 24 hours. The first-time suspension would be further increased to seven days if a person under the age of 16 is in the vehicle at the time of the offence. Participation in Manitoba’s Ignition Interlock program would become mandatory for all convicted impaired drivers and would take effect on driver’s licence reinstatement, thereby eliminating the option for impaired drivers to avoid this requirement by delaying licensing once a mandatory period of suspension has been served. Amendments to the Drivers and Vehicles Act would also require law enforcement officers to notify the Registrar of Motor Vehicles whenever a driver has been charged with a serious driv-

ing-related offence so the registrar could quickly invoke driver improvement actions, such as suspending a driver’s licence. “As first responders, our officers too often see the tragic results of motorists engaged in high-risk driving behaviours,” said Supt. Shahin Mehdizadeh, officer in charge, East District, D Division, RCMP. “Manitoba’s proposed safer road act sends a very clear message to drivers who disregard the safety of residents and motorists in our communities, and ensures that they will face the consequences of their unsafe road decisions.” Authorizing the registrar to take immediate driver improvement action based on serious driving charges laid by police would be a unique approach among Canadian jurisdictions and would improve road safety by taking immediate action when a driver’s past driving history warrants, Minister Mackintosh said. He added also unique to Manitoba is the proposed extended roadside suspension for alcohol or drug-impaired offences when a person under the age of 16 is in the vehicle, which would further

page 5 by the public and turned over to natural resource officers or wildlife rehabilitators for treatment and rearing. Many species leave their young alone during the day, sometimes for extended periods. The parent is usually nearby and quite aware of where their youngster was left. Seeing a young animal on its own does not necessarily mean it has been abandoned or orphaned. Well-intentioned individuals actually interfere with nature by picking up wildlife. There are serious health risks associated with handling wild animals including distemper, rabies, parasites and mange. Raccoon roundworm can cause blindness and death if contracted by people, especially children. As well, wild animals are prone to biting or scratching humans and possibly attacking household pets.

The proposal also gives some leeway for exemptions to the ban in bars and casinos.

PrOVInCE rEMInDS MAnITOBAnS TO LEAVE WILDLIFE In THE WILD Manitoba Conservation and Water Stewardship would like to remind the public to leave wildlife in the wild. Every spring, young wild animals are unnecessarily picked up strengthen the government’s commitment to protecting children from harm. “MADD Canada is pleased the province of Manitoba has taken significant steps in this proposed legislation to reduce the carnage caused by impaired driving,” said Andrew Murie, CEO, MADD Canada. “Manitoba taking steps to ensure children are protected from impaired drivers is an example of innovative legislation that MADD Canada will encourage other provinces to follow.” To complement these legislation changes, amendments are also being introduced to the Driver Safety Rating regulation administered by Manitoba Public Insurance that would sanction drivers who continue to put themselves and other road users at risk by talking on hand-held electronic devices or texting while driving, Minister Mackintosh said. With these proposed changes, which would be effective July 1, 2015, drivers convicted of using a hand-held electronic device while driving would drop five levels on the driver safety rating (DSR) scale, the minister said. Currently, such a conviction re-

If there is concern a young animal has been abandoned, it should be observed for several hours, or monitored for even for more than a day for some species, from a distance using binoculars. No one should attempt to capture the animal or bird without proper training as there is a risk of injury to the animal. It is also illegal to capture or possess animals protected under Manitoba’s WildlifeAct. The best way to help is to leave wild animals where they were found and not to disturb them in any way. If a genuine orphaned animal is found, contact: the nearest Manitoba Conservation and Water Stewardship District Office; the Manitoba Conservation and Water Stewardship tip line at 1-800-782-0076 (toll-free); and the Wildlife Haven Rehabilitation Centreat 204-878-3740; and the Prairie Wildlife Rehabilitation Centreat 204-510-1855. sults in two demerits. This proposed change would result in drivers with already poor driving records paying as much as $3,200 in additional costs, the minister said. He added that drivers at the top of the DSR scale would incur additional driver costs of $542 over the five years it would take to return to their pre-conviction placement on the scale. “The prevalence of distracted driving on our roads is equally as disturbing as impaired driving,” said Minister Mackintosh. “On average, 28 people are killed every year in Manitoba due to distracted driving. This is devastating and senseless because texting or talking while driving is 100 per cent preventable. “These changes are intended to encourage drivers to stop using their hand-held cellphones or texting while driving and to focus their attention on the road ahead.” Currently, convicted impaired drivers are required to participate in the Ignition Interlock program as a condition of immediate licence reinstatement following mandatory driver’s licence suspension. However, some drivers choose to wait out the mandatory interlock enrolment period, which is one year for first-time offend-

PrOVInCE ADVISES SPEED LIMIT InCrEASES TO 110 KM/H On MOST TWInnED SECTIOnS OF TrAnS-CAnADA HIgHWAY WEST OF WInnIPEg Manitoba Infrastructure and Transportation reminds motorists the maximum allowable speed limit on selected sections of the Trans-Canada Highway (TCH) west of Winnipeg is now 110 km/h, up from 100 km/h. The increased limits along sections of the TCH are possible following increased safety measures including improving intersections, paving shoulders, creating rumble strips, and installing better signage and guardrails. Areas around Virden, Brandon, Carberry, Portage la Prairie, Elie and Headingley are excluded from the increased speed limit because of road geometry and traffic signal locations in these areas. In 2009, the speed limit on the Trans-Canada Highway from Saskatchewan to Virden (a distance of 47.7 km) was increased to 110 km/h. Motorists are also reminded to drive according to weather conditions and to obey posted speed limits. ers, by delaying licence reinstatement. Ignition interlock devices are breathalyzer-like instruments that keep a vehicle from starting if the driver has been drinking. They also require random breath tests while driving. If the driver fails a random test, the incident is logged, an alarm is activated and the driver is prompted to provide another breath sample. These devices are not intended as a penalty for drivers but, rather are intended to influence safer driving behaviour by physically separating driving from drinking alcohol. Costs related to the ignition interlock program can be financed through Manitoba Public Insurance. “An appalling one in three fatal collisions on Manitoba’s roads involves drivers who have been drinking,” said Minister Mackintosh. “While we have been successful in reducing alcohol-related incidents, we will continue to enhance our laws to send the message that drinking and driving will not be tolerated.”

that," says Andrew Cash, the NDP MP who introduced the motion. She added that the government has already introduced "tough measures to protect Canadians from predatory banking practices." In a statement, the Canadian Bankers Association said, "Major banks have never charged their customers a fee to receive a paper bill by mail for things like credit cards, loans or lines of credit when money is owed to the bank." It also said the banks "have made a commitment to the federal government that they will not charge customers for bills when money is owing."

Facial recognition, body cameras used by Calgary police The Calgary Police Service (CPS) unveiled plans to start using facial recognition software to compare mugshots with crime scene photos and video, making it the first Canadian force with such a program. In September, CPS announced that all front-line officers will be wearing body cameras by the end of the year. “Police agencies have broad authority under the FOIP Act to collect, use and disclose personal information for law enforcement purposes,” Clayton said in a written release. “But we have questions regarding how CPS is implementing these technologies, and specifically what steps have been taken to ensure privacy and security risks have been identified and addressed.”

Driver reaches 248 km/h, not fast enough to elude Leduc rCMP A high-performance car and a pair of racing motorcycles were not fast enough to escape the attention of RCMP south of Edmonton. An officer in a radar-equipped car was driving on Highway 19, ironically not far from the Castrol Raceway, when he saw the black M3 clipping along at a crisp 248 km. A high-performance car and a pair of racing motorcycles were not fast enough to escape the attention of RCMP south of Edmonton. That's near the top speed listed for the road version of the M3 on the BMW website. Despite the extreme speed, the officer was able to pull the car over and charge the driver, a 44 year old man from Spruce Grove, with dangerous driving. The posted speed limit on the highway is 100 km/h. It was the second time in two weeks that Leduc RCMP charged a driver for extreme speeding. On April 30, an officer was monitoring traffic on the QEII at Airport Road, when two sport motorcycles enter the highway.

The cost of doing business? The bikes accelerated rapidly, changing lanes erratically and without signaling, while hitting speeds up to 175 km/h. When the officer tried to stop the bikes, one pulled over while the other fled. The driver of the bike that pulled over — a 29 year old Edmonton area man — was charged with careless driving.

Bank fee outcry unites consumers and even politicians

Increased public scrutiny of banking fees in recent weeks led at least one of the big banks to withdraw a new raft of charges. After complaints from customers, the Royal Bank said on May 22 that it was backing away from a plan to charge customers transaction fees for loans, mortgage payments and debit transactions on some accounts. Ian Lee, a management professor at the Sprott School of Business who spent a decade in banking in the 1970s and '80s, says the pay-to-pay fees were a step too far.

Canadian MPs seeking to regulate bank charges. Like the cable and phone companies, Canadian banks are often accused of trying to gouge customers with service fees. The justification from Canada's Big Five financial institutions is that they face increasing revenue pressures as a result of low interest rates and the sagging price of oil. But the government's decision this week to back an opposition motion to rein in banking fees suggests anti-bank sentiment is so strong right now that it even crosses party lines. "There's anxiety out there among consumers about banking fees," says Ken Whitehurst, executive director of the Consumers Council of Canada. "The political parties are trying, in their own way, to tell consumers that they're listening." On Monday, the NDP introduced a motion to ban a number of bank fees, including charges for paper bills, and enact a mandatory code of conduct that would protect consumers. One of the concerns is "pay-to-pay" fees, such as charging customers a fee for credit-card payments and scheduled mortgage payments.

rising fees ... and concerns All of the so-called Big Five banks — Scotiabank, CIBC, TD Bank, BMO and RBC — have recently raised fees. "It's gone beyond reasonable and most Canadians agree with

"I thought that they went over the edge, just in the court of public opinion," says Lee. "When you start charging somebody on the transaction whereby you're paying something you owe the bank — whoever [came up with] that should be fired." He says the proliferation of service fees reflects the fact that banks have to look for new revenue streams. For the longest time, Lee says, financial institutions kept banking fees low and were in fact running savings and chequing accounts as loss leaders in order to gather deposits to fund the lending side of their business. But about 10 years ago, partly out of increased competition from credit unions and virtual lenders such as ING (now Tangerine), the banks moved to start "unbundling" their account services and getting customers to shoulder the true costs of banking, Lee says. More recently, he says, banks have had to offset the drop in revenues due to low interest rates and the costs associated with keeping electronic banking secure.

page 7 But he dismisses the idea that banks are taking advantage of their customers. He cites a study by the Financial Consumer Agency of Canada, which found that between 2005 and 2013, the average monthly fee on chequing accounts went up by 13.6 per cent — just shy of the inflation rate for that period, 14 per cent. "It may seem like the banks are gouging, but they're not," Lee says.

Answering to consumers Even so, the NDP's Cash says it's hard for the average consumer to have much sympathy for the banks when they read that the Royal Bank posted record earnings of $2.4 billion in the first quarter of 2015, up 17 per cent from the same time in 2014. "I think that they're doing pretty good," says Cash. The Consumer Council's Whitehurst isn't surprised by the banks' profit motive. "Banks are always looking for ways to bring in more money — by definition that's what they do," he says. But he adds that the average bank customer questions the rationale for increased fees in an era when the automation involved with electronic banking has presumably reduced the cost of processing individual transactions. "Consumers know that computerization is dramatically lowering, not raising, costs," says Whitehurst. "I think this is another thing that creates this discontinuity for people — they say, why aren't these [fees] falling?"

Canada seeks $3B in retaliatory tariffs against U.S. over meat labelling U.S. requirement for country-of-origin labelling considered protectionist industry. Canada is seeking permission from the World Trade Organization to impose more than $3 billion a year in tariffs on products imported from the United States in the latest move in a trade battle. Ottawa is taking the action because the U.S. has failed to repeal a contentious law requiring stringent country-of-origin labelling to identify where livestock was born, raised and slaughtered before being sold in the U.S. Canada's meat industry says the law violates trade agreements and has cost producers billions of dollars. On May 18, the trade body agreed with that argument for the fourth time, and sided with Canada and Mexico over the issue.

Labelling called protectionist Backers of the labelling say consumers have a right to know where their food comes from. But industry groups, Canada and Mexico call it a thinly dis-

guised protectionist measure that complicates the sorting process for Americans who import foreign meat and quietly compels them to use U.S. suppliers. After the most recent win, which the government called "final and without the possibility of further appeal," Canadian officials vowed to pursue the matter further by seeking permission to slap a tariff of up to 100 per cent on U.S. imports on a slew of products, including:

collection of data. Visitors will have to pay $85 to cover the cost of data collection. Here are some ways that biometrics already touch our lives.

How it works now The government currently collects the biometric data of foreign nationals from 29 countries and one territory. For an $85 fee, a visitor's fingers are scanned on a glass screen and their digital photo is taken. Exemptions include those under 14 or over 80 years of age, as well as diplomats. New regulations expected by 2018-19 would expand screening to include visitors from about 150 more countries, including those visitors who need visas, work or study permits. Americans are exempt.

Move to biometrics launched in 2008

Fruits, vegetables, grains, pasta, chocolates, baked goods, prepared food, jewelry, liquor, wine, furniture. "Despite the WTO's final ruling that U.S. country of origin labelling measures are discriminatory, the United States continues to avoid its international trade obligations," Trade Minister Ed Fast said in a statement Our government will now move ahead under the WTO process and seek authorization for over $3 billion in retaliation." "The WTO has ruled that the United States is out of options and out of time," Agriculture Minister Gerry Ritz added. "The only way for the United States to avoid billions in immediate retaliation is to repeal [the law]."

Biometric data collection evolves and expands in Canada Ottawa wants to collect data from visitors of 150 countries, up from the current 30 The federal government's plan to increase its collection of biometric data from visitors to Canada has been met with concern, but the practice is already a large part of our day-to-day lives. Biometrics measure a person's unique physiological characteristics — including face, iris, retinal veins, fingerprints, voice and hand geometry — to verify identity. Citizenship and Immigration Canada told CBC News that digital photos and fingerprints are "the only biometrics data applicants will have to provide" under the government's plan for expanded

The government first announced it was moving to biometrics in 2008 because they are more reliable than the use of subjective photo identification. The 2008 budget said, "Border security remains a priority for Canadians. Criminals are increasingly more sophisticated and well-funded, including those who engage in document fraud to illegally move people or goods across borders."

Facial recognition since 2009 Passport Canada has used facial recognition technology since 2009 — scanning for duplicate images in a database of 34 million images to combat fraudulent applications. The agency's identity fraud desk alerted the RCMP after the technology detected two passports issued to murder suspect Robby Alkhalil in 2012. Each year, Passport Canada identifies about 65 genuine passports that were issued to fraudsters.

Canada 'catching up' Minister of Citizenship and Immigration Chris Alexander responded to criticism that the new measures went too far by saying that Canada is actually "catching up" to 70 other countries, such as the United States and Australia. He said the data will be stored for 15 years. Prime Minister Stephen Harper said Thursday that Canada already has access to biometric data collected by other countries. He said Canada would share its data with other countries, but that privacy and legal standards will be in place to protect Canadians.

'Fingerpoints' controversy Montreal amusement park La Ronde came under fire last year for scanning biometric data of visitors at park gates even though it had not been approved to do so. La Ronde had not applied under the Commission d'accès à l'information du Québec to operate a biometric database, the Quebec privacy commissioner said at the time. continued on page 8

page 8

continued from page 7 The park said its "fingerpoints" system, which scanned the index fingers of season-pass holders, was meant to speed up admission. Finger scanning is used at theme parks in the United States, including Disney, Universal Studios and SeaWorld.

Apple iPhone fingerprint scanner Biometrics made a mainstream splash with the 2013 launch of the iPhone 5S, which featured a "Touch ID" that uses a person's fingerprint to unlock the phone. But similar technology appeared in commercial gadgets a decade earlier when Sony introduced a thumb drive with a fingerprint scanner.

Chances are you've already encountered some form of this technology. Government agencies that issue driver's licences use it to verify that you are who your licence says you are. Banks use it when investigating debit card fraud (and lent it to police trying to identify rioters during the 2010 G20 summit). Smartphone apps like FaceCrypt and FastAccessAnywhere use it to grant you access to your mobile devices. Social media sites like Instagram and Facebook employ it when tagging photos. Google uses it in search and tagging functions and police in Dubai have even incorporated it into the Google Glass eyewear officers use.

need for 'special precautions' In a letter to parliamentarians this week, Privacy Commissioner Daniel Therrien warned that the collection of biometric information should come with "special precautions" to ensure the protection of Canadian privacy laws. "It is imperative that government institutions and other organizations think carefully before proposing initiatives that call for the expanded collection, use or disclosure of biometric information. The challenge is to design, implement and operate a system that actually improves identification services, without unduly compromising privacy." *** Seems like the New World Order is getting closer and closer. What is happening all around the World are not just conspiracy theories as proclaimed by media. This is happening for real.

How facial recognition technology is creeping into daily life Face recognition is everywhere from Facebook to some stores and airports, and its use is only growing. The Calgary Police Service became the first force in Canada to start using facial recognition software to match suspects against a mug shot database last month, but it likely won't be the last. The use of facial recognition technology is growing not just in law enforcement and security fields but also in commerce. "One of the reasons face [recognition] is so popular is that face images exist of almost everybody," said Kevin Bowyer, an expert on biometrics and computer vision and chair of the department of computer science and engineering at the University of Notre Dame. "You've got your driver's licence photos, you've got your identity badges wherever you work, so you’ve got this legacy of images that are easily accessible for everyone."

Matching faces not so simple The algorithms used to match images of faces vary and are largely proprietary but generally employ computational methods to analyze the pixel values in images and identify patterns and correspondences. A lot of progress has been made in facial detection and matching in the last decade thanks to the millions of dollars pumped into the field by the U.S. government — primarily the Defence Department — said James Wayman, a facial recognition expert who helped allocate that funding and is a research administrator at San Jose University. But facial recognition software can still be stymied by many factors: a person's pose, lighting, facial expressions, aging, image resolution and obstructions like hats or even hair. "Identification is a very messy process. It's as messy for computers as it is for humans," said Kelly Gates, author of Our Biometric Future: Facial Recognition Technology and the Culture of Surveillance and an associate professor of communication and science studies at University of California, San Diego. "People look like each other, people look different over time …? people can look very different depending on the lighting conditions, depending on the day.… "You can never establish certainties; you can only establish probabilities of matches." To make a good match, you need images where people are looking straight into the camera and have similar facial expressions — ideally, a smile and not the neutral expression we've all been told to adopt on IDs and passport photos in the post-9/11 era. "That rule is born out of this idea that you don't want to match across expressions," Bowyer said. "It turns out it would be better

if everybody smiled because your smile is more distinctive than your neutral [expression]."

CCTV images often not useful Facial recognition is only as strong as the algorithms and image banks driving it. When the U.S. National Institute of Standards and Technology tested the six leading suppliers of facial recognition software in 2013, it found the best-performing among them (NEC, the provider Calgary police are using) failed to recognize the most likely match in a database of 1.6 million mug shots about four per cent of the time. The worst-performing software missed it about 20 per cent of the time. For webcam images, the failure rates were roughly 11 per cent and 67 per cent, respectively. ?The biggest obstacle to accurately matching faces is image quality. Many of the agencies that use facial recognition rely on CCTV and security cameras, but these produce images that are grainy, low-resolution and taken from above. "The worst-possible direction to put a camera to try to recognize somebody’s face is up," said Wayman. He says he doubts that casinos, for example, ever really use the facial recognition software that is supposed to help them keep out problem gamblers and spot card cheats and VIP customers because their cameras are generally on the ceiling. The poor quality of CCTV images also hindered police efforts to identify the two suspected perpetrators after the 2013 Boston Marathon bombings, who were caught on blurry surveillance footage — their faces partly obscured by hats — taken shortly before two bombs went off. The FBI's facial recognition system failed to find a match for either Tamerlan or Dzhokhar Tsarnaev even though both were in the driver's licence database and Tamerlan was in a government database of known and suspected terrorists.

FBI adopts face recognition Facebook, on the other hand, is full of high-resolution, frontfacing pictures of faces, which is why its more than 250 billion uploaded photos are a veritable gold mine for law enforcement. The FBI has said it won't store social network photos in the database of 52 million photos that will be part of its new face recognition system, but groups like the Electronic Frontier Foundation have raised concerns that "there are no legal or even written FBI policy restrictions in place to prevent this from occurring." The FBI has said that by 2015, its database will include at least 4.3 million "civil images" — those taken for non-criminal purposes. "This means you could become a suspect in a criminal case merely because you applied for a job that required you to submit a photo with your background check," the EFF warned in an analysis of the program. The FBI's Next Generation Identification system will also include fingerprints, palm prints, iris scans and information such as ethnicity and immigration status and be shared across agencies and police departments.

Automated passport checks Facial recognition technology is also becoming a familiar site at airports. Australia, New Zealand, the U.K. and Germany are

page 9 among the countries that use automated airport customs gates outfitted with cameras that snap your picture, which gets matched against your passport — and potentially a watch list. Canadian border authorities have so far limited their use of biometric tools to iris scans, which are used to verify the identities of those who use CanPass or Nexus IDs to travel between the U.S. and Canada. New passports are equipped with a digital facial image that can be used in face recognition systems, and Passport Canada does use the technology to check applicants' photos against its database. But while facial recognition might be able to detect passport fraud, it likely won't help authorities pick a known terror suspect out of a crowd at a busy airport. "How often do terrorists whose picture you have and are looking for really walk through airports? Not very often. A thousand times an hour some poor chump like me walks through the airport … so you get thousands upon thousands of false positives," said Wayman, who advises Australian customs authorities on their SmartGate facial recognition system. Experiments in using facial recognition software to identify individuals walking through airports in the U.S. and Japan have failed in recent years because the technology is generally better at the one-to-one type comparisons involved in checking passports or licences than at the one-to-many searches required to match a face in a crowd to one in a database.

Selling you stuff to your face Security-related uses of facial recognition are to be expected, says Bowyer, but it's the commercial applications that have really picked up in recent years. Retailers like Reebok and Tesco have used cheap webcambased facial detection software to monitor how customers react to store displays or to show them age- or gender-specific ads in real time. (Unlike face recognition, face detection doesn't try to make a match but estimates a person's gender, age and facial expression based on what their face looks like and what the software already knows about faces of a certain age, sex or mood.) Smart TVs enable cable, video game and marketing companies to gauge audience reaction using face detection while online dating site Match.com will find you a mate who looks like your ex with the help of facial recognition?. There's even a smartphone app called SceneTap that uses cameras and facial detection to tell you if a club or bar is busy and what the average age and gender ratios of the patrons are. Such applications come at price, says Gates: autonomy. "Facial recognition plugs into a larger set of practices and problems around predictive analytics and the ways in which all of our online and offline experiences are constantly being modulated using data science and data analytics," she said. The increasing pervasiveness of facial recognition technologies also raises concerns of privacy. The Alberta privacy commissioner has already announced she will review the Calgary police's use of face recognition technology. But the fact is, there is little preventing police and others from making use of images taken in public spaces, where there is no presumption of privacy, or uploaded to networks like Google+ and Facebook,

whose privacy policies deem some images to be publicly available.

B.C. Mountie pretends he's homeless to catch drivers on cellphones VERNON, B.C. - A British Columbia Mountie who posed as a homeless man — sort of — says the tactic was an effective way to catch drivers using cellphones or not wearing their seatbelts. Cpl. Mark Taylor dressed in plain clothes and stood on a Vernon, B.C., street holding a cardboard sign that read "I am not homeless." Taylor said some passing drivers still assumed he was begging for change and avoided looking at him. He said that when he saw drivers using their cellphones or not wearing seatbelts, he radioed officers further down the road, and they ticketed 11 drivers in one hour. RCMP spokesman Gord Molendyk said similar enforcement campaigns have involved officers impersonating construction workers or commuters waiting for a bus. He said the method works because drivers are much less likely to realize they're being observed by police if the officer is not wearing a uniform. "There's no law saying we can't do this," Molendyk said. "The whole idea is education, and that we're serious about enforcing road safety." Occasionally, Taylor revealed the bottom half of his sign, which read, "RCMPolice looking for seatbelt/cell phones." Some law-abiding drivers appeared to appreciate the sly policing approach and gave Taylor a thumbs up. Police plan to use a similar enforcement approach at other intersections in Vernon in the near future.

High bear activity forces trail closures in Banff, Lake Louise Portion of Legacy Trail closed because of a feeding grizzly If the weather forecast is right, it's shaping up to be a great weekend for camping and outdoor activities, but be prepared for a number of trail closures because of high bear activity in the Banff and Lake Louise area. Parks Canada has posted a list on its website, which includes some areas around the Banff townsite because of a grizzly bear. The closure affects Vermilion Lakes Road and the Second and Third Vermilion Lakes on the north side of the Bow River. The popular Legacy Trail is also closed from the west end of

the Vermilion Lakes Road to where it connects with the TransCanada Highway, where Parks Canada says a grizzly beer is feeding on a seasonal fish. Fenland Trail, 40 Mile Creek, Echo Creek, and First Vermilion Lake remain open. Fines are as much as $25,000 for those who venture into closed or restricted areas.

Tobacco firms to pay billions in damages in Canada A Canadian court has ordered three tobacco companies to pay C$15.5bn (£8bn; $12bn) - the largest award for damages in the country's history. The plaintiffs were Quebec smokers who said the firms failed to warn them of health risks associated with smoking. Imperial Tobacco Canada, Rothmans Benson & Hedges and JTI-MacDonald vowed to appeal against the decision. The class-action lawsuits were filed in 1998, but only recently went to trial in the courts. The firms argued that Canadians have had a "high awareness" of smoking health risks since the 1950s.

Current Canadian cigarette packages have strong health warnings

"That awareness has been reinforced by the health warnings printed on every legal cigarette package for more than 40 years," JTI-Macdonald said in a statement. But the plaintiffs argued that the companies did not properly warn their customers and failed in their general duty "not to cause injury to another person", according to the Quebec Superior Court decision. They represent nearly one million smokers who were unable to quit or who suffer from throat or lung cancer, or emphysema. Explaining his ruling, Judge Brian Riordan said: "The companies earned billions of dollars at the expense of the lungs, the throats and the general well-being of their customers. "If the companies are allowed to walk away unscathed now, what would be the message to other industries that today or tomorrow find themselves in a similar moral conflict?"

news Headlines From Around the President Vladimir Putin tells West not to fear russia

The details emerged in a written ruling by Judge Emma Kelly following a hearing in Birmingham County Court. Birmingham City Council took legal action after a neighbour complained.

Russia is not a threat to Nato, President Vladimir Putin says. "Only an insane person and only in a dream can imagine that Russia would suddenly attack Nato," Mr Putin told Italian newspaper Corriere della Sera.

the Black Sea Fleet," according to a military source quoted by Russian state media. "Su-24 attack aircraft demonstrated to the American crew readiness to harshly prevent a violation of the frontier and to defend the interests of the country." Pentagon spokesman Col Steve Warren said on Monday that the Russian planes were not armed with weapons and the USS Ross maintained its course. The ship's deployment to the Black Sea had been publicly announced, the Pentagon added.

President Vladimir Putin

'Screaming and shouting'

The Western alliance is bolstering its military presence in its eastern European members in response to their fears of Russian threat, following its involvement in the Ukraine conflict. In his interview with Corriere della Sera, Mr Putin said some countries were "simply taking advantage of people's fears with regard to Russia" in order to receive "some supplementary military, economic, financial or some other aid". "There is no need to fear Russia," Mr Putin said. "The world has changed so drastically that people with some common sense cannot even imagine such a large-scale military conflict today. We have other things to think about, I assure you."

Woman in Birmingham jailed after making 'loud sex noises' A woman who breached a court order that barred her from making "loud sex noises" has been jailed. Gemma Wale, of Small Heath, Birmingham, was given a twoweek prison sentence. A civil court judge concluded she had breached an anti-social behaviour order by "screaming and shouting whilst having sex" at a "level of noise" that annoyed a neighbour.

The judge did not give Miss Wale's age in her ruling but said she had a boyfriend called Wayne. Judge Kelly said she had also breached the order by arguing with her boyfriend, swearing at a neighbour, "banging around the house" and "running around in the property". She said a neighbour had complained "paragraph 3 of the order" had been breached at about 05:00 on 29 January, 2015. "Gemma started screaming and shouting whilst having sex, which woke us up," said the neighbour. "This lasted 10 minutes." The judge concluded: "I am satisfied that during the course of the early hours of 29 January 2015, at around 5am, the defendant was guilty of screaming and shouting whilst having sex at a level of noise which caused nuisance or annoyance to (a neighbour)."

russian planes y near US warship in Black Sea Russian warplanes have made several close passes in recent days over a US destroyer sailing in the Black Sea, the Pentagon said. Russian state media reported that the USS Ross was acting "aggressively". The US Department of Defense, however, said the ship was "well within international waters at all times, performing routine operations". The US Navy released video on Monday of a Russian plane passing as close as 500 metres to the USS Ross. "The crew of the ship acted provocatively and aggressively, which concerned the operators of monitoring stations and ships of

Russia's Defence Ministry would not comment on the reports. The Black Sea encounters are the latest sign of military tension between Russian and the West, amid hostilities in eastern Ukraine. Last month, the UK and Sweden scrambled fighters to intercept Russian bombers near their borders.

Fifa's Sepp Blatter 'under investigation in US' Fifa president Sepp Blatter is being investigated by US officials as part of their inquiry into corruption at the world football body, US media say. The news came hours after Mr Blatter, 79, announced that he was stepping down from his role. US prosecutors launched a criminal inquiry last week, with seven Fifa officials arrested in Switzerland, part of a group of 14 people indicted. Two days after the arrests, Mr Blatter was re-elected president of Fifa. However, he said on Tuesday that it appeared the mandate he had been given "does not seem to be supported by everybody in the world of football". continued on page 24

USA Is it OK to Bring a Loaded rifle into an Airport? This guy Did It The story of a man who walked into Atlanta’s Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport on Friday carrying a loaded AR-15 semiautomatic rifle has gone viral. And here’s the most amazing part of it: his actions were completely legal, thanks to Georgia’s gun laws. Passed in 2014, the HB 512 Safe Carry Protection Act allows people to openly carry a rifle in an airport, so long as they don’t try to go through security. The armed Cooley was dropping his daughter off for a flight, when police officers approached Cooley, asking why he was carrying a semiautomatic weapon with an extended capacity 100round drum.

don’t exercise your rights, the government doesn’t have any hesitation taking them away,” Cooley told WBS-TV Channel 2. This isn’t the first example of someone carrying a gun into an airport to make a statement. In July, Dr. Peter Steinmetz, a director at the Barrow Neurological Institute in Phoenix, made headlines when he walked around Phoenix’s Sky Harbor airport with an AR15 over his shoulder. It is also legal to carry a gun in an airport in Arizona before security.

US police officer convicted of assault on handcuffed woman A jury in Los Angeles has convicted a female police officer of assault for repeatedly kicking a handcuffed woman who died soon afterwards. Mary O'Callaghan, 50, now faces up to three years in jail. She has pleaded not guilty and is expected to appeal. The case centred on a video recording, showing O'Callaghan hitting 35-year-old Alesia Thomas in the throat, abdomen and groin during the arrest in 2012. Ms Thomas later lost consciousness and died in hospital. A post mortem examination found traces of cocaine in her body, but the cause of death was listed as undetermined.

The police woman went to arrest Ms Thomas on suspicion that she abandoned her two children. The incident was caught on video by a dashboard camera in a police car. O'Callaghan was not charged with killing Ms Thomas. The US has recently seen a number of controversial cases when police officers used excessive force. Recent data collected by the Washington Post newspaper suggests the number of people shot by US police is twice as high as official figures claim. The paper said that during the first five months of this year, 385 people - more than two a day - were killed. The number of black people was disproportionately high among the victims, especially unarmed ones.

Why do US police keep killing unarmed black men? Recent high-profile cases of unarmed black men dying at the hands of the US police have sparked protests and civil unrest in several American cities. The deaths of Michael Brown, Eric Garner, Walter Scott, and Freddie Gray are - some claim - evidence of long-standing prob-

Jim Cooley and his daughter

His response? “Safety.” Cooley posted videos on YouTube, recording his conversations with the officers. “You’ve got quite a few people afraid because calls are like just coming in left and right,” one officer says to Cooley. “People’s fears are not my responsibility,” Cooley responds, then goes on to explain his rights. “If you’re detaining me, then I’m going to have to file a lawsuit against the airport,“ he says. Cooley explained his actions to Atlanta’s WBS-TV Channel 2: “It shouldn’t matter what I carry, just that I choose to carry,” Cooley said. “You never know where something might happen.” According to Cooley, he was exercising his rights: “If you

'Reasonable force' The jury in Los Angeles, California, reached the guilty verdict after two days of deliberations. The police officer - who has been relieved of duty without pay after the incident - is now expected to be sentenced on 23 July. Her lawyer Robert Rico said her client would appeal. The defence team acknowledged that the footage showed an "ugly" scene, but said their client's use of force was "reasonable, justified and necessary" because Ms Thomas was not complying with the officer's orders. The lawyers also stressed that O'Callaghan had an exemplary record during her 19 years of service.

page 15 Continued from page 12 yet it feels like the right work to do. It's important. "There are statistics on all kinds of violent crimes. And yet, when it comes to people being killed by police officers, there's no data on that. So a light bulb went off in my head. I looked at two crowd-sourcing databases which collected all of the names. I then went through the media reports listing each of those people who were killed." He counted 1,149 people of all ethnic groups killed by the police in 2014. "I identified whether they were armed or unarmed. I identified them by race by looking at if there was an obituary or another picture of them online. "In the aftermath of Ferguson [where the unarmed teenager Michael Brown was killed], there was this big question 'Is this a pattern, is this an isolated incident?' What [my data] shows is that Ferguson is everywhere. All over the country you're seeing black people being killed by police." The youngest recorded was 12, the oldest 65. More than 100 were unarmed. "Black people are three times more likely to be killed by police in the United States than white people. More unarmed black people were killed by police than unarmed white people last year. And that's taking into account the fact that black people are only 14% of the population here. "It goes back to this question of how do they perceive young black men? There's something in the US called Vision Zero, a commitment by mayors to achieve zero traffic fatalities in a specified timeframe. "We haven't seen mayors step up and make clear commitments to eliminate the level of police violence in their communities. I think that says a lot about the relative value that they place on those constituents' lives."

'Female Viagra' nears US approval after expert backing A US government panel has urged regulators to approve a drug to treat low sexual desire in women, nicknamed the "female Viagra". The experts backed flibanserin, but said it must carry warnings about strong possible side effects including fainting and tiredness. The final decision now moves to the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA). The FDA has rejected the drug twice since 2010 but it usually follows the advice of its experts. Women taking the drug reported between 0.5 and one more sexually satisfying event per month, results experts admitted were "modest". "But on the other hand, even modest results can make a lot of difference when you're at a certain point in the clinical problem," said Dr Julia Heiman of the Kinsey Institute at Indiana University.

'Life-changing' One patient who received the drug explained its appeal. "I want to want my husband, it is that simple,'' said Amanda Parrish. "For us, flibanserin is a relationship-saving and lifechanging drug.'' Lobbying by the drug's developer, Sprout Pharmaceuticals, was aided by the women's rights group Even the Score, which has accused the FDA of gender bias by approving a number of drugs treating erectile dysfunction in men without passing an equivalent for women. But some criticised the campaign as providing cover for a drug with marginal effects. "To approve this drug will set the worst kind of precedent - that companies that spend enough money can force the FDA to approve useless or dangerous drugs," said, Dr Adriane Fugh-Berman of Georgetown University. If approved, flibanserin will be aimed at pre-menopausal women. The panel suggested several risk management measures, such as requiring physicians to hold a certificate before prescribing the drug.

Amtrak ordered to expand speed control system at deadly crash site of speeding train PHILADELPHIA - Federal officials announced Saturday that Amtrak must immediately expand its use of a speed restriction system on Philadelphia's northbound rails where a speeding train reached 106 mph, flew off the tracks and crashed, killing eight people. The Federal Railroad Administration said an emergency order would be issued in coming days that calls for Amtrak to ensure the presence of the automatic train control system that notifies an engineer when a train is above the speed limit and automatically applies the brakes if the engineer doesn't act to slow the train down. The system is already being used for southbound trains ap-

proaching the curve where Tuesday's derailment occurred. Amtrak said it would abide by the federal directive and others announced Saturday, adding that Amtrak's "overarching goal is to provide safe and secure rail passenger travel." The train was travelling from Washington, D.C., to New York when it flew off the tracks at Philadelphia. About 200 people were injured, and at least eight people remained in critical condition in Philadelphia hospitals Saturday. All were expected to survive. Investigators have been looking into why the train hit the speed of about 106 mph in a 50 mph zone. The FBI also is looking into the possibility that the windshield of the train was hit by an object shortly before the train derailed. The engineer, who was injured in the crash, told authorities he did not recall anything in the few minutes before it happened.

The Federal Railroad Administration also ordered Amtrak to analyze curves to assess risks on the Northeast Corridor, the busy stretch of tracks between Washington and Boston, and determine if more can be done to improve safety. "In areas where approach speed is significantly higher than curve speed, the appropriate technology intended to prevent over-speed derailments must be implemented immediately," the agency said. Amtrak also will have to increase the amount and frequency of signage alerting engineers and conductors of the maximum authorized speed. After the crash, Amtrak president Joseph Boardman vowed to have the next-generation positive train control system in operation along the railroad by the end of the year, as Congress mandated in 2008. The system uses GPS, wireless radio and computers to prevent trains from going over the speed limit. Company spokesman Craig Schulz said Saturday that Amtrak also plans to look into whether it could partially activate some of the capabilities of another safety system already installed along the Northeast Corridor without delaying the complete activation of the next-generation system later this year. Amtrak hopes to resume limited service between Philadelphia and New York on Monday with full service expected the following day. Sumwalt also said the FBI is investigating the possibility that the windshield of the train was hit by an object shortly before the train derailed. Officials said an assistant conductor said she heard the engineer talking with a regional train engineer and both said their trains had been hit by objects.

Survivors of Canada's 'cultural genocide' still healing By Micah Luxen

Micah Luxen is a news and data journalist, covering Canadian news for the BBC in Europe A report on Canada's history of separating indigenous children from their parents at abusive residential schools has called the practice "cultural genocide". But what does the proposed reconciliation mean for survivors? In 1966, five-year-old Joseph Maud was separated from his family and sent to live at a Canadian residential school for indigenous students in Pine Creek, Manitoba. Maud remembers it was like walking into an invisible brick wall - students were expected to speak English or French and Maud only spoke his native Ojibwa. If the students spoke their own language, ears were pulled and mouths were washed out with soap. "But the greatest hurt was being separated from my parents, cousins and uncles and aunties," says Maud, who now lives about an hour from Pine Creek. When the lonely little boy would wet the bed, his nun in charge of his dormitory would rub his face in his own urine. "It was very degrading, humiliating. Because I'm sleeping in a dormitory with 40 other boys," he says. "It's bringing tears to my eyes right now just thinking about it." The residential school survivor remembers kneeling painfully on the cement chapel floor, because the nuns told him 'that's the only way God hears you.' "I cried going down on my knees, and my thoughts were 'when is this going to end? Somebody help me,' calling out for my parents." Each day, the distance between them increased, he says.

The report makes 94 recommendations about the "way we talk to, and about, each other", including implementing an Aboriginal Languages Act to preserve and promote those languages, and a memorial museum to be launched by Canada's 150th anniversary in 2017. Micah's career began in Brazil, where she volunteered for an NGO after high school. In an isolated jungle city called JiParana, she came to know the role that news media plays in connecting citizens and leaders alike, regardless of the distance between. Even more interesting was the way that watchdog journalism held those same members of society account-

able to each other. It was there that Micah decided she could be most effective as a journalist. Micah interned as a reporter at a variety of news organizations and graduated from the University of Victoria, in Canada, with a degree in political science. From there, Micah worked as an editor at a small daily newspaper in Kelowna, British Columbia, until she moved with her husband to Toronto, Ontario, where she joined the board of the Canadian Association of Journalists (CAJ), and served as co-chair of the 2013 national journalism conference in Ottawa. Micah believes in the power of news media to enforce accountability across all sectors of society. Her mission is to advocate for quality investigative journalism and to mobilize journalists to collectively do the same.

Joseph's Girls Residential School in Spanish, Ontario, in the 1950s, is now working as a counsellor with a degree in psychology. "We should have been embraced for who we are, not being turned into something we weren't," says Nolan, who's been working through her own healing for years. "It should have never happened, but we have to forgive that era of time." The child and family councillor says that even if the report is complete, that doesn't mean survivors have finished that process. "People start to realise in their adult years, why did I scream at my kids like that? I did that because I learned that. I learned that in Residential School, because that's what we experienced." Nolan's hope for the future is that they come to be at peace, as the last step of the grieving process. "I'm just hoping people find peace, that they know who they are, to be proud of that, and [that] nobody else is going to tell them ‌ they cannot speak their language again," she says. "I hope people reach that state and are able to hold their head up high." Nolan says its not about non-indigenous people feeling guilty, but having a good understanding of what happened, to prevent something like this happening in Canada again. Joseph Maud visited the former Pine Creek Residential School with his daughter. "I used to stand against the church wall, and I would feel a little comfort in the warmth of the sun, but inside, my little heart was always wanting my parents," he says. As he sat there, 49 years later, Maud says, "the tears flowed". If You Think We Are Alone In The Universe –

A quarter of Americans believe that intelligent extraterrestrial visitors have already come to Earth and have been doing so for a long time.

You Are Most Probably 100% Wrong

Here’s one of them: “Yes there have been crashed craft, and bodies recovered. We are not alone in the universe, they have been coming here for a long time.” - Apollo 14 Astronaut, Air Force Captain and Founder of the Institute of Noetic Sciences, Dr. Edgar Mitchell There are multiple reasons why the extraterrestrial question continues to gain popularity. People are starting to ask questions about the world around them, utilizing critical thinking and investigation. After thoroughly investigating this topic your conclusions will be similar to the conclusions of the majority, we are not alone, and we are being visited.

1. The Size of the Universe How often do you look up into the night sky and wonder just how many stars, planets, galaxies and more are out there? Space has been a high area of interest that has always fascinated scientists, philosophers, musicians and pretty much just about everyone. What is it about deep space that grabs our attention so much? To think about just how big the universe is can really put things into perspective. Counting the stars in the universe is like trying to count the number of sand grains on a beach , not possible. Although estimates vary among different experts, the general consensus is that there are at least between 100 billion and 200 billion galaxies in our universe. Think about that for a moment, and now throw in billions of stars in each galaxy! This number could very easily be in the trillions for all we know. Take the Milky Way Galaxy for example, which measures to about 120,000 light years across (it would take light that many years to travel across the galaxy), and contains up to 400 billion stars. Again, that’s billions of galaxies that contain billions of stars. Scientists estimate that at least 10 billion habitable Earth-sized planets exist in the milky way alone ( one galaxy out of billions), but it’s important to keep an open mind as to what type of conditions and environments some unknown extraterrestrial like forms could thrive in. They all don’t necessarily have to be Earth-like. Given our estimation of the size of the universe, or multiverse (whatever you want to call it), odds are we are not alone.

2. Whistle Blowers The past few years have seen a surge of whistle-blowers that’ve come out and said some remarkable things. Bradley Manning, Edward Snowden and Julian Assange have received the most attention, but the reality is that there are hundreds of whistle blowers who have come forward with verified credentials and backgrounds. Mass survelience and the security state is not the only thing shocking people around the world, it’s the fact that many of these whistle blowers claim that we are not alone in the universe. It wouldn’t be so hard to ignore if it wasn’t for the backgrounds these people have in their respected fields. The first one that comes to mind is Paul Hellyer, Former Canadian Defence Minister, the man responsible for unifying the Canadian Air Force, Army and the Navy into one united force now known as the Canadian Forces. For someone with such a background to come out and make these extraordinary claims definitely grabbed the attention of many people. “Decades ago, visitors from other planets warned us about the direction we were heading and offered to help. Instead, some of us interpreted their visits as a threat, and decided to shoot first and ask questions after. Trillions of dollars have been spent on black projects which both congress and the commander in chief have deliberately been kept in the dark.” ”In one of the cases during the cold war, 1961, there were about

50 UFOs in formation flying South from Russia across Europe. The supreme allied commander was very concerned and was about ready to press the panic button when they turned around and went back over the North Pole. They decided to do an investigation and they investigated for three years and they decided that with absolute certainty that four different species, at least, have been visiting this planet for thousands of years. There’s been a lot more activity in the past two decades, especially since we invented the atomic bomb.” Paul Hellyer isn’t the only one making extraordinary statements, at least a dozen NASA astronauts have done the same. Just like Dr. Edgar Mitchell’s quote, other astronauts have said some remarkable things. Let’s take a look at a few (out of many) examples. “There is abundant evidence that we are being contacted, that civilizations have been monitoring us for a very long time. That their appearance is bizarre from any type of traditional materialistic western point of view. That these visitors use the technologies of consciousness, they use toroids, they use co-rotating magnetic disks for their propulsion systems, that seems to be a common denominator of the UFO phenomenon” – Dr. Brian O’leary, Former NASA Astronaut and Princeton Physics Professor “In my opinion I think they were worried that it would panic the public so they started telling lies about it. And then I think they had to tell another lie to cover their first lie, now they don’t know how to get out of it. Now it’s going to be so embarrassing to admit

page 19 that all these administrations have told so many untruths, it would be embarrassing getting out of it. There are a number of extraterrestrial vehicles out there cruising around.” – Gordon Cooper, Former NASA Astronaut, Aeronautical Engineer and test pilot. One of the seven original Astronauts in Project Mercury, the first manned space program of the United States The list goes on and on, the latest in NASA Astronaut statements about UFOs came from the 2005 International Space Station (ISS) Commander, Leroy Chiao. Some of the most extraordinary statements about UFOs and extraterrestrials come from persons who have held some of the highest positions known. Those who would be in a position to ‘know’ about possible extraterrestrial encounters. “Behind the scenes, high ranking Air Force officers are soberly concerned about UFOs. But through official secrecy and ridicule, many citizens are led to believe the unknown flying objects are nonsense” - Former head of CIA, Roscoe Hillenkoetter, 1960 “There is a serious possibility that we are being visited and have been visited for many years by people from outer space, by other civilizations. Who they are, where they are from, and what they want should be the subject of rigorous scientific investigation and not be the subject of ‘rubishing’ by tabloid newspapers.” – Lord Admiral Hill-Norton, Former Chief of Defence Staff, 5 Star Admiral of the Royal Navy, Chairman of the NATO Military Committee ” Everything is in a process of investigation both in the United States and in Spain, as well as the rest of the world. The nations of the world are currently working together in the investigation of the UFO phenomenon. There is an international exchange of data.” – General Carlos Castro Cavero The list of military whistle blowers is huge, there are hundreds of them and hundreds of quotes to choose from. To view military whistleblowers (with verified backgrounds) give a press conference at The National Press Club about UFOs deactivating nuclear weapons. The list of quotes from all fields, from many people is outstanding. We could literally fill pages upon pages so lets stop here, we think you get the picture. These quotes by whistleblowers and people with prestigious backgrounds leads perfectly into the next point as to why almost everybody knows that we are not alone in the universe. “There is another way whether it’s wormholes or warping space, there’s got to be a way to generate energy so that you can pull it out of the vacuum, and the fact that they’re here shows us that they found a way.” – Jack Kasher, Ph.D, Professor Emeritus of Physics, University of Nebraska. “This thing has gotten so highly-classified…it is just impossible to get anything on it. I have no idea who controls the flow of

need-to-know because, frankly, I was told in such an emphatic way that it was none of my business that I’ve never tried to make it to be my business since. I have been interested in this subject for a long time and I do know that whatever the Air Force has on the subject is going to remain highly classified” – Senator Barry Goldwater , Chairman of the Senate intelligence committee

3. The Evidence of UFOs Within the past few years, dozens of governments admitted to allocating resources and having programs to study the UFO phenomenon. For instance, in Canada the RCMP, Transport Canada, and the Department of National Defence recently admitted to tracking UFOs and investigating them. They’ve been doing it for years, accumulating thousands upon thousands of UFO related documents. Many of these documents have since been officially released. Documents released by the National Security Agency (NSA) reveal what is recorded when a UFO is being tracked on radar. Example “As the F-4 approached a range of 25 nautical miles it lost all instrumentation and communications. When the F-4 turned away from the object and apparently was no longer a threat to it, the aircraft regained all instrumentation and communications. Another brightly lighted object came out of the original object. The second object headed straight toward the F4. ”

4. Mass Mainstream Media Attention Media outlets of all kind are covering the topic, almost every movie that comes out these days has something to do with space or some kind of extraterrestrial intelligence. We’ve been bombarded with the topic for a while now so it’s not hard to see how it’s on the minds of many. The most recent case of mainstream extraterrestrial ‘noise’ was made when scientists recently spoke to the house Committee on Science, Space and Technology. Dan Werthimer of the SETI Research Centre at the University of California, Berkeley, recently called for more funding to be allocated to the search for extraterrestrial life since he is “close to 100 percent” certain that we are not alone. In mid 2013, the same committee held a hearing about exoplanet discoveries, but perhaps one of the largest UFO/extraterrestrial hearings came at the National Press Club, which also took place in Mid-2013. At this event, hundreds of researchers, activists and military/agency/political witnesses representing ten countries gave UFO/extraterrestrial testimony to six former members of the United States Congress about events and evidence indicating an extraterrestrial presence engaging the human race. Former Sen. Mike Gravel (D-Alaska), and 2008 presidential candidate said that there is “an extraterrestrial influence that is investigating our planet. Something is monitoring the planet and they are monitoring it very cautiously.” Apart from these events, UFOs are constantly a topic of interest in today’s mainstream news. Unfortunately, most mainstream

media outlets that cover the topic seek out to ridicule it rather than investigating it properly.

5. Personal Experience and Video Footage There are thosands of people out there claiming to have contact with extraterrestrial beings. This has played a large role in spreading the influence of extraterrestrial interest across the world. All of us seem to be naturally fascinated with the unknown, especially when it comes to space. It seems like human nature. Neuroscience can now explain what happens to our body when we meditate, but it’s something we all knew to be beneficial before the science. Is extraterrestrial life similar? Is it something we all feel deep down inside, something we don’t need proof for?

Final Thoughts A few years ago the question was “Do UFOs exist?” Today that question has been answered, and the presence of UFOs performing maneuvers that defy our laws of physics has been well documented. The question has more so shifted to, “Is that an extraterrestrial space craft?” It’s nothing to fear, in our opinion they’ve been around forever. They have been aware of us long before we have been aware of them. As speculated with our ancient civilizations in Earth’s brief past, perhaps they will one day interact with humanity again. We guess we will see. Perhaps some groups are concerned about our planet, and come here further pushing the idea that we need to start changing the way we are doing things here. Perhaps one day soon we will find out.

continued from page 10 Mr Blatter said Fifa needed profound restructuring, adding that he would remain in post until an extraordinary congress was called to elect a new president. No dates have been set, but under Fifa rules it is expected to take place between December 2015 and March 2016.

'Bribes and kickbacks' US officials quoted in the New York Times said they hoped to gain the co-operation of some of the Fifa figures now under indictment on charges of racketeering and money laundering to try to build a case against Mr Blatter. Separately on Wednesday, Interpol issued a wanted persons alert for two former Fifa officials, Jack Warner and Nicolas Leoz, as well as four corporate executives. All six were on the list of 14 people indicted by the US authorities last week. Meanwhile, South African's sports minister has again denied that a $10m bribe was paid to secure the 2010 World Cup, which was one of the charges to come out of the US investigation.

Fifa's Sepp Blatter

Earlier the FBI, Internal Revenue Service and the US Attorney for the Eastern District of New York, who is involved in the US prosecutions, all said they would not comment on the Blatter resignation. In its prosecution, the US justice department said 14 individuals were under investigation worldwide for allegedly accepting bribes and kickbacks estimated at more than $150m (£97m) over a 24-year period. Two vice-presidents were among the seven Fifa officials arrested in Zurich. They all await US extradition proceedings. The arrests overshadowed the vote for a new president, which Mr Blatter won, defeating his sole challenger, Prince Ali bin Al Hussein of Jordan. Prince Ali withdrew despite forcing a second round, having lost the first by 133 votes to 73. Uefa chief Michel Platini said an emergency meeting scheduled for Saturday to discuss the Fifa crisis and Mr Blatter's re-election a move the European body had opposed - would now be postponed. Mr Blatter, who is Swiss and has been Fifa president since 1998, said he would urge Fifa's executive committee to organise an extraordinary congress "for the election of my successor at the earliest opportunity".

Cool or creepy?

China finds a way to shame people who pollute

The South China Morning Post reported that an innovative DNA technology – which can deduce the shape and appearance of a person’s face from a DNA sample – is being used to shame litterbugs in Hong Kong. The giant city is being inundated with literally thousands of tons cigarette butts, used coffee cups, discarded newspapers and other forms of casually tossed away and unsightly waste.

person prudently and responsibly toss their morning coffee cup into the office recycling bin. You put on rubber gloves, retrieve the cup, scoot outside and wing it down Main Street, anticipating the lovely laugh you’re going to have when your rival’s face is smeared on a “Face of Litter” poster across the street from your office. Conviction and punishment, in other words, without the ‘guilty’ person committing a crime.

So here’s what can happen now: You toss some garbage onto a Hong Kong Street. It gets picked up, and tested for DNA. An American company – Parabon Nanolabs – uses the DNA to create an approximate picture of your face. Then giant marketing agency Ogilvy & Mather Hong Kong puts your face on a billboard at the site of your littering offence as part of a shaming campaign called “The Face of Litter.” But, to put it mildly, there are some ... inaccuracies. No matter how good this face-deduction process is or will become, your DNA has no idea how old you are. Nor does it know how you wear your hair, or whether you have a mustache or beard. If you happen to be bald-headed and in your late twenties, you might want to brush up on the locations of Hong Kong waste baskets. Just about anybody else may continue to drop their trash in the streets with relative impunity. “It was intended to provoke a conversation to create positive social change for the people of Hong Kong,” said Lisa Christensen, co-founder and CEO of the NGO Hong Kong Cleanup. “The prospect of this idea alone, we hope, will be enough to make people think twice about littering” It’s an impressive show of technology, but shaming polluters with a billboard is like something out of the legendary dystopian movie Blade Runner. So, again, good idea, or bad? On the plus side, littering is ugly, selfish and completely unnecessary. It takes huge amounts of time, effort and money to clear it from the streets of a massive city like Hong Kong. On the other side, let’s say your boss or a co-worker did or said something that really annoyed you. You happen to see this

Even the guilty litterers here are being denied due process. That may not be completely shocking, but this technology can easily spread around the globe.

new York man takes his dying dog on bucket-list adventure across the country “He loved it, it was so healing for him. It was like he was five years younger." Poh doesn’t have long to live. The 15-year-old pit bull-lab mix from New York City has been diagnosed with a series of serious health problems including tumours and kidney failure. Veterinarians believe that his days are numbered. The terminal diagnosis inspired Poh’s owner, Thomas Neil Rodriguez, to embark on a seven-week road trip with his pet, crossing off bucket-list destinations as they travelled the country. “It was a great trip,” Rodriguez, who adopted Poh from a shelter when the pup was just eight weeks old, told reporters. “I got to spend seven weeks with Poh. At first, I did not think he’d make it two weeks, but he did.” Starting on March 6, Rodriguez, his fiancée, and Poh set off on a 35-city, 12,000-mile road trip that included stops in North Carolina, Texas, Oregon and Arizona. It didn’t start off as a seven-week trip. It just grew into one. Rodriguez, a DJ, had a gig booked in Arizona. Not wanting to

Because the canine did so well, they continued to explore America together, driving up through California to Seattle and back again. “I initially wanted to get him to the Pacific ocean,” Rodriguez said. “I have always wanted him to swim.” “He loved it, it was so healing for him. It was like he was five years younger. He was walking with a lot of energy.”

Rodriguez chronicled their road trip, filled with stops at both important landmarks and at dog parks, on Instagram, where pet owners were quick to praise the trip of a lifetime. "My life is kind of hectic,” Rodriguez told ABC News. “I’m always traveling, but Poh is my home, my child. I think this resonated with a lot of dog owners. They wish they could do stuff like this with their dog and spend these moments, but sometimes life gets in the way.

"I am super blessed that I have actually gotten to do this,” he added. “People think I take care of Poh, but Poh takes care of me.” Because Poh is still going strong, Rodriguez and his fiancée are considering a second leg of the road tip, this time a shorter trip to Miami. “The unfortunate fact is that we’re all going to pass away,” Rodriguez told the Daily News reporters. “I’m kind of determined to live it to the fullest with Poh.”

continued from page 24 Further allegations of corruption emerged on Tuesday with claims that Fifa general secretary Jerome Valcke was linked to an alleged $10m (£6m) payment of bribes over South Africa's bid to host the 2010 World Cup. He denies any wrongdoing. South African Sports Minister Fikile Mbalula told reporters on Wednesday that the payment was above board, aimed at supporting football in the African diaspora in the Caribbean. "We refuse to be caught up in a battle of the United States authorities and Fifa," he added. A separate criminal investigation by Swiss authorities into how the 2018 and 2022 World Cups were allocated is also under way. Australian football chief Frank Lowy said on Wednesday that the race to win the 2022 bid, which was awarded to Qatar, was "not clean" and that he had shared what he knew with the authorities. He said in an open letter that former Concacaf president Jack Warner had misappropriated funds worth $500,000 sent by Australia intended to develop the organisation's Centre of Excellence in Trinidad and Tobago. Mr Blatter's departure "should open the door to major reform," he added. The Australian government spent about $40m on its World Cup bid but received only one vote.

Hopes dashed in hunt for missing MH370 Officials refuse to extend search zone because 'there are no new credible leads' Desperate families had their hopes dashed after officials announced they had virtually given up the search for missing flight MH370. Salvage experts said the hunt for the Boeing 777 would not be extended beyond the current search zone in the southern Indian Ocean despite earlier promises that it would be. In April, the Australian-led Joint Agency Co-ordination Centre said if no clues to the aircraft's resting place were found in the current search area, the hunt would be doubled in size to cover 46,300 square miles.

Man buys car using 660,000 coins A Chinese man has paid for his new car using 660,000 coins and 20,000 low value banknotes, it's reported. The buyer, identified as Mr Gan, handed over the huge haul of small change to a dealership in the northeast city of Shenyang, the Liaoshen Evening News reports. Each coin and note was worth just one yuan ($0.16; 10p), and the hefty sum, weighing four tonnes in total, took up more than 4m (13ft) of floor space within the show-

The shooting is still going through a police administrative review, as well as state and federal criminal investigations, Fairfax County said in a release announcing the settlement. Michael Lieberman, a lawyer for Geer's family, said the money will go to Geer's daughters. "One of John's big aspirations was that his daughters be able to go to college and graduate debt free. This will at least allow that to be accomplished," said Lieberman, who added that the family hopes to see the case go before a grand jury. room, the report says. Mr Gan explains that he paid in cash because he had amassed a huge amount of small denomination coins and notes through the petrol station where he works. "As our station is in the suburbs, there are very few banks. So we didn't deposit the coins and decided to use them to buy a car for our company," he says.

Fairfax County board of supervisors chair Sharon Bulova said in a statement that she was pleased "a fair settlement has been reached and I hope this may bring some measure of closure to the family of John Geer."

It took a while for staff to move all the cash The buyer warned staff at the car dealership in advance about his unusual payment method, and the cash was neatly wrapped in small packages. But it still posed a logistical challenge employees needed more than an hour to move all the cash into the showroom. They then had the unenviable task of gathering it all up again and taking it to the bank.

being shot by Fairfax County Police officer Adam Torres in 2013. Other officers and witnesses said the 46-year-old had his hands up when he was shot. Torres was one of the officers who responded to a complaint from Geer's common-law wife, Maura Harrington, who told a 911 operator Geer was tossing her possessions out of the house. Rodney Barnes, a negotiator who was trying to coax Geer out of the house, later told investigators looking into the shooting that the man's hands were raised when the shot was fired. Other officers, excluding Torres, also said Geer's hands were raised, as did other witnesses. Torres said he saw Geer move his hands down towards his waist. No one has been charged in connection with the case.

The raw (and ugly)truth about the war on drugs by Mike Adams, the Health ranger

Drugs are bad. Drugs destroy peoples' lives. Didn't you know that marijuana turns regular everyday people into zombie pot smokers? That's why we have a war on drugs in America: to protect our children from potheads. Drugs are bad. Especially marijuana. I learned this the other day when I visited an elementary school as a guest speaker. The schoolchildren were well trained in describing the dangers of drugs. On command, they would spout out any number of statements describing them. But then a funny thing happened. I started asking how many of them were on drugs. You know, drugs their doctor prescribed. Drugs that alter brain chemistry to keep them docile, or free of pain, or to dilate their lungs so they could breathe easier. It turned out that 60% of these schoolchildren were either on drugs at that very moment, or had been on such drugs within the last twelve months. Two-thirds of the teachers were on drugs, too. And it's not at all a stretch to believe that 40% or more of all parents are on drugs. Mild-altering drugs like antidepressants, no less. drugs, if you dare, and watch your cholesterol skyrocket. You'll find out you're a slave to the drug, and no healthier than before.

A nation of drug addicts Fact is, we are a nation of drug addicts. We drug ourselves, our elderly and our children on a daily basis. We do it with prescription medications, over-the-counter pills, alcohol, caffeine, nicotine... and we say it's all fine because those drugs are legal. But wait a minute, you say. Those legal drugs are different from marijuana. They're FDA-approved drugs, prescribed by a doctor. They have a medical purpose. Oh really? Ritalin has a medical purpose? What medical symptoms does Ritalin treat, then? What measurable physiological state is addressed with Ritalin? There are none, of course. Ritalin is an authority drug. It keeps children in line. It makes teachers feel less stress and parents feel less guilt. Ritalin is a mind-altering narcotic, and yet thousands of children are on it today. Its purpose is not to help children, but to make life more convenient for those who manage children. You think statin drugs have a medical purpose? Think again. In reality, they only have a profit purpose. These drugs were invented to sell pills that manage disease states in people, not that solve any real health problem. Don't believe me? Just stop taking your statin

What's the dierence between legal and illegal drugs? So what's the real difference between legal drugs and illegal drugs? Some people think that only illegal drugs are habit-forming. Yet legal drugs can be just as addictive as illegal drugs. Just ask anyone who has tried to quit smoking, go off caffeine, or kick to Oxycontin habit. So is there some other difference between illegal drugs and legal drugs? People argue that legal drugs are safe. They're FDA-approved! And yet they fail to recognize that prescription drugs kill more Americans each year than all the crack, meth, and heroin deaths combined. Okay, then, what about the argument that illegal drugs have no medicinal purpose, and legal drugs do have a medicinal purpose. What about that? Wrong again. Medical marijuana is a medically proven treatment for a variety of conditions, yet marijuana still remains illegal. Even MDMA (now called "Ecstasy" on the street) was long considered an effective "experiential drug" that helped severely traumatized adult patients overcome past pains through improved clarity. At the same time, tobacco smoke has no medical

purpose whatsoever, yet cigarettes remain perfectly legal. No, the real difference between these two classes of drugs is not their medical merit, nor their safety. The real difference is something far more sinister. It gets right down to answering the question of why DEA agents will raid medical marijuana clinics, yet stand by doing nothing while Americans smoke themselves to death on tobacco. Want to know the real answer? I very much doubt you do. Because, like most Americans or Canadians, you won't believe it. You've been blinded to the obvious truth for your whole life, manipulated by the media, and brainwashed by advertising that has turned you into a statistically-validated consumer. You'll think, no, this couldn't possibly be true. The world isn't that unjust, you think. But you're wrong. (Take the free Gullibility Factor test to find out if you're really a mind slave or not...) Here's the raw, blunt truth about the war on drugs. Drugs are declared legal or illegal based primarily on who benefits from their manufacture, distribution and sale.

Corporate and government proďŹ ts determine the legality Let me put this another way. You know why cigarettes are still legal? Consider this: here's a product that admittedly kills people.

It has no health benefit whatsoever. It is a threat to the public health. Yet why does it remain legal? Because states get a cut of cigarette sales thanks to the Big Tobacco settlement a few years back. Keeping cigarettes legal results in desperately-needed revenues for states... revenues that are almost never spent on antismoking campaigns, by the way. It's a classic racket: tobacco is allowed to remain legal because powerful institutions get a cut of the action. While people die from lung cancer, states get financial resuscitation by taking a cut of every sale. States are trading your health for their revenues. Think I'm being overly cynical? Let's take a look at gambling laws. Organized gambling is illegal at both the state and federal levels in this country. Except, of course, when government gets a cut. Casinofriendly states didn't just make casinos legal for the good of the public: they legalized gambling in exchange for a cut of the action. It's a classic, mob-style "protection fee." If you want to test this theory, launch your own online gambling website. You'll be shut down almost immediately and charged with serious crimes. Gambling and organized betting is illegal, didn't you know? That is, unless the state runs the show, as in state lotteries. It's right in your face, folks: gambling is legal when powerful corporations or institutions get a piece of the action. It's illegal when they don't. It has nothing at all to do with morality, or protecting people, or doing what's right. It's all about money, pure and simple. Just ask all the corrupt politicians in Missouri who legalized riverboat gambling a few years back. Getting back to drugs, why do you think alcohol remains a legal drug? Because states and cities tax it. State governments are addicted to alcoholics as a source of revenue to fund their voter entitlement programs that get politicians reelected. Alcohol is a cash machine for cities and states. Sometimes the exact same chemical is both legal and illegal, depending on who profits from it. The FDA, for example, banned the Chinese herb ma huang because it contains ephedra. Yet the exact same chemical compound remains perfectly legal in over-thecounter drugs like Sudafed and a variety of cold medicines. Sudafed even gets its name from ephedra: "pseudo-ephedrine." So why is ephedrine illegal in herbs, yet legal in pharmacy drugs manufactured by drug companies? You already know the answer. With all that in mind, why do you think prescription drugs that kill people remain legal? Think carefully now... If you guessed, "Because powerful corporations generate billions in profits selling drugs, and governments get a cut of that via state sales taxes and corporate income taxes" then BINGO! You win a prize: a lifetime of free Prozac to keep you happy!

continued from page 29 Legal drugs generate windfall proďŹ ts for those in power Think about it: if prescription drugs were peddled by street dealers instead of doctors, and if all that revenue changed hands in a non-taxable, non-corporate structure (i.e. street cash), then you'd be seeing full-scale law enforcement action against the makers, distributors and sellers of those drugs. You'd also see endless headlines about how dangerous they were: "Street painkillers kill twelve in South Miami!" The sad truth of the matter, though, is that those very same painkilling drugs killed at least twelve people in South Miami this very day. But you'll never here about it in the media. Because the news networks are sponsored by drug companies, of course. (The news is not designed to inform you, it's designed to shape your reality, to turn you into a consumer of whatever products the corporations are peddling this year. Didn't you know?) Every drug that's legal is legal for one simple reason: somebody in a position of power is keeping it legal because they're getting a cut.

non-patentable drugs are usually outlawed That's why medical marijuana is illegal: because government doesn't control its distribution, nor does government receive a financial cut. You can bet your life that if Big Pharma owned the patents on medical marijuana and could set monopolistic prices on it, pot would be perfectly legal to own and smoke. That is, as long as you got it from a pharmacy where prices and distribution could be controlled. Control is the key here. You think the FDA is discrediting drugs from Canada in order to protect your health? Get real. The FDA is simply protecting the monopoly drug market in this country. It's controlling distribution points in the U.S. in the same way that a crack dealer assassinates his street corner competition. Eliminate the competition, and you can set whatever price you want. That's why uninformed U.S. consumers pay 30,000% markup prices for drugs that can be acquired in Mexico or Canada for pennies on the dollar.

It's not about your health, it's about their wealth You see, corporate America doesn't really care what you put in your mouth, up your nose, through your lungs or into your veins, as long as they get a cut from it. That's the whole prescription drug racket in a nutshell: it's billions of dollars in annual profits generated from mind-altering (yet legal) drugs that flat-out kill people. Lots of people. Like 100,000 Americans a year (or a lot more if you believe more critical statistics). So if you've ever wondered why Ritalin -- which has no medical purpose whatsoever -- is perfectly legal, and yet medical marijuana -- which has a well-proven medical purpose -- is outlawed, now you know the answer: because Ritalin makes powerful people rich.

And marijuana doesn't. Anybody can grow marijuana. Drug companies don't control the patents.

Why I teach people to be 100% drug free Now, just for the record, I do not personally use any drugs whatsoever (recreational, over-the-counter, prescription or otherwise), and in fact, I teach people to be 100% free of all drugs, including caffeine and alcohol. I bought into the "just say no to drugs" advice of Nancy Reagan, and I actually applied it to ALL drugs, not just selective drugs. And as far as I can tell, aside from the Mormons and the Amish, there are only a small percentage of truly drugfree people living in this country. Practically everybody I meet is addicted to at least one of the following: coffee, cigarettes, alcohol, pain meds, prescription drugs or sugar (which alters brain chemistry in drug-like fashion). At the same time, I'm not at all fooled by this silly "War on Drugs" charade, which is really nothing more than enforcement of corporate drug profits at gunpoint. If we had a genuine war on drugs in this country that really worked to protect the American people we'd send DEA agents into drug company offices and confiscate all the legalized but deadly medications being manufactured, distributed and deceptively sold to unwitting Americans today. Medical marijuana is a threat to both the profits and power of drug companies, not to mention the credibility of the DEA. Letting grannies smoke pot in California makes DEA agents look silly. If it were allowed, it would also undermine the billions of dollars already spent incarcerating people for "pot crimes." Basically, it would make the whole War on Drugs look stupid. Which it most assuredly is, at least when it comes to marijuana. I can understand taking a tough stance on hard drugs (crack, meth, heroin, etc.), but arresting cancer patients who smoke joints for pain control sounds a lot more like oppression than law enforcement to me. So what is the War on Drugs? It's an excuse to control you. It is a system that keeps the population in a state of constant fear so that heroic politicians can get elected on empty promises to "keep fighting the war on drugs!"

The DEA is AWOL on most drug issues Where is this War on Drugs when it comes to Grandma in the nursing home, who died of a stroke caused by Cox-2 inhibitor drugs? Where is the War on Drugs when little Johnny schoolboy picks up a rifle and blows away his classmates because he's on antidepressants and can't tell the difference between real life and a

first-person-shooter video game? Where is the War on Drugs when 16,500 people each year die, shitting digested blood until they pass out and die because that daily dose of aspirin tore a gaping hole in their stomach? The War on Drugs, you see, turns a blind eye to the death and suffering caused by these drugs. The DEA pretends prescription drugs don't even exist. No prescription drug death has ever been prevented by the DEA as far as I know. Yet 100,000 Americans are killed each year by FDA-approved drugs. The DEA has no interest whatsoever in protecting Americans from these drugs. Ever wonder why? The DEA is properly named, by the way. It's the Drug Enforcement Agency. It's enforcing drugs. The right drugs. The legal drugs. The drugs that make money for drug companies, drug distributors, drug retailers, cities, states and countries. It's enforcement at gunpoint, and as long as the money keeps flowing, the drugs will stay perfectly legal, regardless of who dies. The entire distribution system is well in place: the false and misleading television advertising, the outright bribery of drug dealers (doctors), the street corner fulfillment centers (pharmacies), and the coordinating drug lord running the show (the Fraud and Drug Administration). It's a brilliant system for manufacturing, promoting, delivering and selling deadly, addictive drugs to children, adults and seniors while generating corporate profits and tax revenues for cities, states and nations. And that's the raw truth about the War on Drugs. You may not like it, but now, at least, you know why it exists. So I have a common sense question for all the people in this country. If you support the War on Drugs, then why are you taking so many drugs yourself? And why are you allowing your children to be drugged?

BEYOnD rEALITY:MEXICO'S ZOnE OF SILEnCE by Scott Corrales

There exist a number of "accursed sites" on the surface of our planet. Some of these locations are the sites of gravitational or atmospheric disturbances that still remain unexplained by twentieth century science. Such anomalous areas possess properties which interfere sporadically with humans and their equipment. One area worthy of mention surrounds the Mediterranean island of Elba (famous for being napoleon's ďŹ rst place of exile), and is the bane of maritime aviation in the Mediterranean; another spot is Mt. Stredohori in Czechoslovakia, where an unknown force drains car engines of power throughout the length of a 75-footstretch of road. However, we need not travel so far to encounter a part of the world that is even more perplexing than these others, although it remains little known to most people: Mexico's mysterious, magical zona del silencio - the Zone of Silence, just four hundred miles away from El Paso, Texas. Deserts are often considered to be mysterious enough without the added weirdness that this patch of earth some four hundred miles from El Paso has to oer. It is a place which gobbles up radio and TV signals, and which has of late been associated with the UFO phenomenon.

Centuries of Mystery According to Dr. Santiago Garcia, there has been an awareness of the unusual properties of the area since the mid-nineteenth century, when farmers trying to eke out a living in the forbidding environment became aware of the "hot pebbles" which routinely fell to earth from the clear sky. In the 1930s, Francisco Sarabia, an aviator from the northern Mexican state of Coahuila, reported that his radio had mysteriously ceased to function, earning him the distinction of being the Zone of Silence's first victim. Nonetheless, it wasn't until 1970 that the zone first entered public awareness when an American missile, an Athena, fired from the White Sands Missile Base, went off course inexplicably, heading for the Zone of Silence, where it ultimately crashed. A few years later, an upper stage from one of the Saturn boosters used on the Apollo project broke up over the very same area. The U.S, military sent a team down to the region to investigate its surprising natural properties. Engineer Harry de la Pena was the first outsider to discover the zone and its perplexing radio interference properties. Humans have been resided in and around the scrub and cactus filled desert area since Prehistoric times, when an unknown tribe of natives clustered around a watering hole which is still in existence. The community

of Ceballos, Durango, some 25 miles away, is the settlement nearest to the zone, and it is the starting point of any venture into its unreal atmosphere. The visitor will find vast expanses of flat terrain, pinpointed with thorny desert bushes and infested with poisonous snakes. No different from any other desert in that respect. Pena and his group became aware of the "silence" when they found that it was impossible to communicate with one another via walkie-talkies: radio waves are not transmitted at the accustomed speed and frequency. Portable radios would emit but the lightest whisper when turned on at full volume. To this day, television signals cannot be received in Ceballos or in the neighboring ranches. Some magnetic force, with the power to dampen radio waves, seems to exist in the region. Since the engineer's initial visit, scientists from around the world have visited the zone, flocking to the research facility erected at its very heart by the Mexican government. The zone's somewhat foreboding name has been changed to Mar de Tetys--The Sea of Thetys, due to the fact that it was once under water millions of years ago--and the research lab has been dubbed the "biosphere". Curiously enough, the zone lies just north of the Tropic of Cancer and south of the 30th parallel, which places it in the company of a number of other planetary anomalies such as the Bermuda Triangle. UFOs and the presence of nonhuman life have been recorded in this anomalous region. Until a few years ago, there were people still alive who could remember having had encounters with allegedly extraterrestrial creatures in the early decades of this century.

Close Encounters On October 13, 1975, Ernesto and Josefina Diaz, an enterprising couple, drove into the zone in a brand new Ford pickup to collect unusual rocks and fossils which can be found in great abundance. As they busied themselves in their activity, they noticed that a desert rainstorm was heading toward them. Hoping to avoid being caught in a flash flood, they wisely packed their vehicle up and sped off, but not fast enough to avoid the relentless rain: the track ahead of them turned into a swamp: the pickup was quickly trapped and began to sink in the soft terrain. While the couple struggled to keep their vehicle from submerging into the mud, two figures approached them, waving at them amid the torrential rain. Two extremely tall men in yellow raincoats and caps, with unusual but by no means alarming features, offered their assistance to help them get underway again. The men instructed the totally drenched couple to get inside the pickup again while they pushed. Before the couple realized, their vehicle had popped out of the hole and on to firmer ground. When the husband got out of the pickup once more to thank the two men, he realized they were gone. There were no footprints in evidence or any surface feature that could have concealed their departure. Travelers crossing the zone regularly report seeing strange lights or fireballs maneuvering at night, changing colors, hanging motionless and then taking off at great speed. Two ranchers head-

page 35 ing back from a festivity witnessed how a coruscant light floated down from the dark sky and disgorged humanoid occupants, who glowed with the same eerie light and were walking toward them. The ranchers broke into a frantic run. Physical traces of these nocturnal visits can be found. One witness returned one morning to the site where he had seen the mysterious lights cavorting the previous night, and found that the scrub vegetation "had been set on fire". Dozens of similar reports emerge from the zone, told by reliable witnesses. Dr. Santiago Garcia, who has devoted much of his life to the investigation of this anomalous region, has speculated that some of lights seen by the residents could well be from a roving vehicle left behind by the U.S. military, recharging its solar cells by day and conducting furtive analytical missions under cover of darkness. Garcia points out that when the Air Force came to collect the Athena missile's wreckage, they took along several truckloads of desert sand for analysis. There is the widespread belief that huge deposits of magnetite exist in the area, and that this iron ore is responsible for the dampening of electromagnetic waves. It has also been proven that considerable deposits of uranium exist in the mountains ranges fencing the Zone of Silence. In 1976, a visitor to the region took the first photograph ever of a UFO landed near a topographic feature known as "Magnet Hill" by the locals. The photos clearly show a shiny silver object resembling a large stewing pot. The lucky shutterbug was able to take more shots of the UFO as it rose upward with a roar, disappearing toward the west.Yet not all of the "extraterrestrial" visitors have been as elusive. The staff of a small local ranch was visited regularly by three tall, blond, long-haired visitors - two males and one female - who were described as being polite to a fault, extremely handsome and dressed "in a funny way". Their Spanish was flawless and had a musical ring to it. The reason for these visits was to secure water from the ranch's well: the "funny" visitors would ask their hosts to please fill their canteens with water, never requesting food or anything else. When asked where they came from, the visitors would limit themselves to smiling and saying "from above." Could these visitors be the "nordic" types referred to by ufologists? Spanish researcher Antonio Ribera described similar "Blonds" operating in the vicinity of Rosellon, in the Pyrenees, where they would only trouble their human hosts for bread and milk, paying for them with gold nuggets. Almost white-haired "nordics" were reported along the Sierra Nevada, in California, were they would come down to barter with townspeople every so often. There exists a connection of sorts between certain enigmatic deserts and these angel-like creatures. No experience in the Zone of Silence is easily forgotten, and journalist Luis Ramirez Reyes will almost certainly never forget his own. During the month of November of 1978, Ramirez visited the Zone as part of a news team assigned to cover a story on the bizarre site. Choosing to go ahead of the main team, Ramirez and his photographer charged into the desert, navigating by intuition rather than by hard knowledge of where their final destination was lo-

cated: the "biosphere" constructed by the Mexican government, a laboratory dedicated to investigating the unusual biological life forms found in the area and to conducting psychic research. No closer to their target than when their reckless impulse drove them into the wasteland, Ramirez became painfully aware that he lacked water or the provisions necessary to survive in this hostile environment should they become hopelessly lost. Having reached a "Y" intersection in the unpaved desert road, they had chosen the wrong one. Suddenly, he noticed that there were three figures walking up ahead, coming toward them. Hoping that these locals might be able to point them toward the biosphere, the journalist told his companion, who was doing the driving, to slow down to talk to them. He was startled when the driver passed them by, as if not having seen them. Ramirez began wondering if the desert hadn't gotten to him already. Thetrio were ordinary people, clad in the outfits usually worn by the inhabitants of that part of the country. As they drove along, he experienced the shock of running into them again--in a different part of the desert! Sternly ordering the photographer (who couldn't see anyone at all) to stop the car , Ram째rez got his chance to speak to the three locals. He asked them if they had seen another vehicle like theirs in the area. They said that they hadn't, but that if they drove cross country amid the rocky desert terrain of the "Sea of Thetys" they would reach the biosphere. The three locals claimed to be out looking for some stray animals of theirs, but they had no water bottles or other gear that would indicate that they were able to survive in the menacing terrain. After completing the cross-country trek, both men were relieved to find the structure of the biosphere rising in the distance. Upon arriving, and meeting up with their team, they discussed their unusual encounter in the desert with Harry de la Pena. In a sobering tone, Pena told them that there were no people in the desert who weren't part of the biosphere team and certainly no flocks for peasants to look for. An aerial survey in later days convinced the investigator of the utter desolation of the region that stretched for hundreds of miles. But if they weren't people, what were they? "Nordic" visitors and other humanoids are not the only kind reported in the region. There have been sightings of oddly clad beings only a few feet in height as well. Ruben Lopez, driving through the zone one night in a van on his way to visit to a relative in Ceballos, noticed that his vehicle's engine began to sputter. This troubled him no end, as he had recently serviced the van. Abruptly, he became aware of five small figures that were standing along the roadside some hundred feet ahead. Lopez believed at first that they were lost children, until he noticed that they wore unusual silver one-piece outfits.

The little beings' heads were covered by helmets resembling those used by football players. Through the helmets' open front, Lopez could tell that they had adult faces. They approached the stalled van with curiosity, filling the driver with genuine fear: Lopez raced the van's engine in neutral, which caused the dwarfs to scatter into the desert darkness. The van continued functioning normally after the creatures had vanished.

The Archeological Enigma The extremely ancient ruins in the Zone of Silence pose another disquieting enigma of their own. Archaeologists have been unable to determine their age, but they undoubtedly form an astronomical observatory thousands of years old. There is no connection between this Mexican Stonehenge and the primitive tribes that clustered around the watering hole which constitutes an oasis in the arid region. At some point in antiquity, someone was quite active in the Zone. Perhaps they were interested, as are modern astronomers and geologists, in the large number of small meteorites that are attracted to the Zone's magnetic properties. A meteorite that crashed in Chihuahua in the late 1950s contained crystalline structures that far outdated the Solar System itself. Researcher Luis Maeda Villalobos concluded that the meteorite contains "material as old as the Universe": Our solar system is some 6 billion years old, while the meteorite's age has been estimated at 13 billion years. Whether we are dealing with UFOs, dimensional visitors who find the magnetic aberrations facilitate their journeys, or merely a poorly understood part of our world with unsuspected properties, no easy answers apply to the riddle posed by the Zone of Silence. The builders of the mysterious ruined observatory would have probably agreed.

University student in georgia accused of harassment for waiting for an appointment Academic advisor placed on leave after threatening to call security on student for waiting for an appointment. An academic adviser at a Georgia university has been placed on leave after a video of her accusing a student of harassment — apparently for sitting in a room waiting for an appointment — went viral. Kevin Bruce, a student at Kennesaw State University (KSU) in Kennesaw, Ga., posted a short video on Wednesday of the adviser, who has been identified as Abbey Dawson, demanding Bruce leave the lobby of a human resources office, where he was hoping to speak with another academic adviser. Dawson accuses Bruce of harassment and asks Bruce to leave. Bruce says he's simply waiting to speak to his adviser and that he isn't harassing anyone. "Sitting here until somebody is available is harassing them," Dawson says, and then threatens to call campus security before walking away. It's not clear whether there was any other discussion or confrontation before the start of the video, where Dawson approaches Bruce. However, there aren't any signs of commotion or chatter in the otherwise placed office waiting room. Bruce told local news outlets that he had been trying unsuccessfully to schedule a meeting with one of his academic advisers for some time. When he went to the human resources office, he was told his adviser was unavailable. Speaking to local news affiliate, Bruce said he didn't have anything else to do at the time, so decided to wait until someone was available to talk to him. He also posted an email exchange with Dawson, alleging that she and others at the faculty were being unhelpful when he was asking for academic advice. Bruce posted the video to his Twitter account, and it's been viewed and re-tweeted

thousands of times since then. Since then, the conversation has bubbled over on Twitter with the hashtag #ItsBiggerThanKSU. Students complain about inattentive or uncaring university staff, and several claim to have had similar interactions with Dawson. Some accused KSU of institutional racism (Bruce is black) and to a lesser degree of sexism on the part of Dawson. Bruce and others, however, said it was more about the staff's seeming unwillingness to take the time to help its students when they need it the most.

page 37 Don't Mess With Seniors A 75-year-old man made the trip back to his old college to take one last look around campus again before he settled in to retired life. As he got to the student quad he saw a young man studying hard, bringing back memories. He sat on the bench beside the lad, but was surprised when the kid started spouting off at him. "Your generation will never understand my generation," the kid lectured. "You grew up in a different world. In fact, your world is almost primitive compared to mine," the student said. "Is that right?" the elder man said. "The young people of today grew up with television, jet planes, space travel, microwaves. I can carry a dozen books on a tiny chip in my pocket organizer. We have nuclear energy, electric and hydrogen cars, computers with light-speed processing, and," he paused to take swig of beer. The senior took advantage of the break in the student's litany and said, "You're right, son. We didn't have those things when we were young - so we invented them. Now, you arrogant little bastard, what are you doing for the next generation?"

Drunk Driving!!! This happened to an Englishman in France who was totally drunk. The French policeman stops his car and asks the gentleman if he has been drinking. With great difficulty, the Englishman admits that he has been drinking all day, that his daughter got married in the morning to a French man, and that he drank champagne and a few bottles of wine at the reception and a quite few glasses of single malt there after. Quite upset, the policeman proceeds to alcotest (breath test) him and asks the Englishman if he knows under French Law why he is going to be arrested. The Englishman answers with humour: No sir, I do not! But while we're asking questions, do you know that this is a British car and my wife is driving... on the other side???

Investment Lesson A Boss hired a good looking and attractive secretary, but 10 days later he committed suicide by jumping from his 27th floor office. Police: Who was there at that time in the room? Secretary: I was there. Police: What happened? Why did he commit suicide? Secretary: He was a good man. One day he bought me a fur coat for $2000.00 Then he bought me a diamond necklace for $15,000.00, then he bought me a diamond ring for $5000.00 Today he asked me to spend the night with him. I told him I charge just $500 a night! Moral: Investments are subject to market risk, check the market rate before investing!

The Wrong Side! I went into the confessional box after years of being away

from the Church. Inside I found a fully equipped bar with Guinness on tap. On one wall, there's a row of decanters with fine Irish whiskey and Waterford crystal glasses. On the other wall is a dazzling array of the finest cigars and chocolates. Then the priest comes in. I say to him, "Father, forgive me, for it's been a very long time since I've been to confession, but I must first admit that the confessional box is much more inviting than it used to be." He replies, "Get out, you moron, you're on my side."

Display of Authority A Department of Water Resources representative stops at a Texas ranch and talks with an old rancher. He tells the rancher, I need to inspect your ranch for your water allocation. The old rancher says, "Okay, but don't go in that field over there." The Water representative says, "Mister, I have the authority of the Federal Government with me. See this card? This card means I am allowed to go WHEREVER I WISH on any agricultural land. No questions asked or answered. Have I made myself clear? Do you understand? The old rancher nods politely and goes about his chores. Later, the old rancher hears loud screams and spies the Water Rep running for his life and close behind is the rancher's bull. The bull is gaining with every step. The Rep is clearly terrified. So the old rancher immediately throws down his tools, runs to the fence and yells at the top of his lungs...."Your card! Show him Your card!"

The CoďŹƒn Maker A man who makes coffin was on his way to deliver one of his coffins when his car broke down. Trying not to be late he put the coffin on his head and began heading to his destination. Some policemen saw him & wanted to make some money off him so they challenged him, "Hey, what are you carrying and where are you going?" The man said, "I do not like where I was buried so I am relocating!!!"

Priest's retirement Speech A Priest was being honoured at his retirement dinner after 25 years in the parish. The leading local politician was chosen to make the presentation and to give a little speech at the dinner. However, he was late, so the Priest decided to say his own few words while they waited. He commenced with: "Thank Goodness we Catholics have a wonderful sense of humour!" "I got my first impression of this parish from the very first confession I ever heard here. I thought I had been assigned to a terrible place. The very first person who entered my confessional told me he had stolen a television set and, when questioned by the police, was able to lie his way out of it.

He had stolen money from his parents; embezzled from his employer; had an affair with his boss's wife; had affiar with his boss's 20 year old daughter, taken illegal drugs; had several homosexual affairs; was arrested several times for public nudity. I was appalled that one person could do so many awful things. But as the days went on, I learned that my people were not all like that and I had, indeed, come to a fine parish full of good and loving people." Just as the Priest finished his talk, the politician arrived full of apologies at being late. He immediately began to make the presentation and gave his talk: "I'll never forget the first day our parish Priest arrived," said the politician. "In fact, I had the honor of being the first person to go to him for confession."

Irish Sugar Test One day Paddy, an Irishman, goes into a pharmacy, reaches into his pocket and takes out a small Irish whiskey bottle and a teaspoon. He pours some liquid onto the teaspoon and offers it to the pharmacist and says, "Could you taste this for me, please?" The pharmacist takes the teaspoon, puts it in his mouth, swills the liquid around and swallows it. "Does that taste sweet to you?" says Paddy. "No, not at all," says the pharmacist. "Oh that's a relief," says Paddy. "The doctor told me to come here and get my urine tested for sugar."

Living With Two Sisters! The Matchmaker goes to see Mr Smith, a confirmed bachelor for many years. "Mr Smith, don't leave it too late. I have exactly the one you need. You only have to say the word and you'll meet and be married in no time!" says the Matchmaker. "Don't bother," replies Mr Smith, "I've two sisters at home, who look after all my needs." "That's all well and good, but all the sisters in the world cannot fill the role of a wife." "I said 'two sisters,' I didn't say they were MY sisters!"

The Wooden Ball... An old man walks into the barbershop for a shave and haircut, but he tells the barber he probably can't get all of his whiskers off because his cheeks are wrinkled from age. The barber gets a little wooden ball from a cup on the shelf and tells him to put it inside his cheek to spread out the skin. When he's finished, the old man tells the barber that was the cleanest shave he's had in years. But he wanted to know what would have happened If he had swallowed that little ball. The barber replied, "Just bring it back in a couple of days like everyone else does."

Horoscope Aries

(March 21 - April 19) You’re so totally focused on business matters that you could forget to socialise, so make sure that doesn’t happen. You’re the one who is usually calling the shots, so when partners step up you’re taken aback. Let them have a shot at it. They could be better than you think. Just watch that you don’t get ahead of yourself. Deal with any thorny issues as early on in the month as possible so that you can enjoy free time. Someone who has been admiring you from afar may let their feelings be known now. Just don’t act too surprised.

Leo

(July 23 - August 22)

You feel jumpy and emotional and those great rolling waves of nostalgia that you’re trying to suppress are washing over you like waves on a beach. Let the past go now, and focus on the future. Keep yourself busy by initiating new ideas for both the long and short term at work, and at home. Look on the bright side of life, and always give yourself more time to look around, just to see what’s out there. Let old suspicions fade away. It’s time. Don’t believe everything you hear. It’s important you pay close attention to detail.

Sagittarius

(nov. 22 - Dec. 21) You genuinely feel that things are finally going your way, and there’s not much that can stand in your way as far as you can see. You’re centre stage and under the spotlight, so make yourself the star of your own creation, and everyone will see what an asset you can be. Your emotions are bubbling under the surface and it feels good to be so excited. Tap into it and expose the way you feel. Luck is on your side, but give yourself a pat on the back for your own efforts too. New opportunities come at you from all directions. Enjoy.

Taurus

(April 20 - May 20) Although usually preferring to work on your own, you can see the benefits of working as a team, and as things start to come together, you’ll feel a surge of energy like never before, leaving you tingling all over, right down to your fingertips. Difficult choices you made recently now prove you were right to trust your instincts, as you can feel success starting to wash over you, and you’re getting to like it. There’s no denying you’re one of the most resilient people around. You’re on the rise Taurus.

Virgo

(August 23 - Sep. 22)

July gemini

(May 21 - June 21) There’s a lot going on in the periphery of your life and you wont be slow to work your way to the front of the crowd to see what you can get for yourself. Your energy is high, you have luck on your side and your instincts are finely tuned and ready to take you where you need to go. Mix with all sorts of people from all walks of life, and from all different backgrounds, but it’s family unions and intimate relationships that bring out the best in you. Find new ways of solving old problems. Tomorrow is another day.

Libra

(Sep. 23 - Oct. 23)

You’ll cast a critical eye over your career as July gets underway. For once your professional life is improving on a par with your personal life, and you couldn’t be happier. The only fly in the ointment is that money is a bit tight, so you have not be able to indulge the lavish lifestyle you’ve been currently enjoying. It’s all about compromise. Let your originality shine through July. Get on your dancing shoes as your social life is about to open like a fan. Life is loaded with opportunity this month. Avoid mistakes you made in the past.

Although you’re not directly involved, emotions are running high between one group of friends and another, so you’d be wise to find something else to do as you’ll be pressed to take a side if you’re in the line of fire, and you’d hate that. Use tact and diplomacy at all times. If you find yourself doing the same things over and over and getting nowhere fast, it could be that its because you didn’t think them through properly at the start. Be crystal clear over financial unions this month, then you can let your hair down.

Capricorn

Aquarius

(Dec. 22 - Jan. 19) July it’s a month to push yourself above and beyond old boundaries, and to show the world you can tackle situations head on without being bruised or battered. The moon in your sign brings enthusiasm and excitement, so go for gold in just about everything you do. Why shouldn’t you? Money worries come and money worries go, but if you’re as constructive as you can be with what you’ve got, you’ll get by until something better comes along. Don’t over commit and don’t be too quick to jump to conclusions. Be realistic.

(Jan. 20 - Feb. 18) Although July will run as smooth as silk, there could be a few minor creases along the way, caused it would seem by people who like to make things difficult for everyone just for the Hell of it. Don’t even waste your breath arguing. Ignore them. Just do your own thing. Also, don’t get involved in things that don’t concern you just because you’re bored. Problems in the relationship zone get resolved, then vanish in the mist. Focus on the things you know are going to definitely work, and shun anything that’s problematic.

Cancer

(June 22 - July 22) Although there’s a lot going on in your head right now, there are times where you just need that blast of luck or opportunity to be confident enough to say “ what the hell!” Money matters will satisfy your needs one minute, then could cost you dearly the next, but it’s your turn here, so go all out to get what you want. Get ready for a few ups and downs financiallyk, but as long as you don’t panic, and allow your sensible head to control the proceedings, your common sense will ensure you take the right path.

Scorpio

(Oct. 24 - nov. 21) Although you’ve been upfront and real over goals you want to achieve, to the point of severity others may say, month of July sees the end to your stand offish mode and you’ll feel more comfortable joining in with the crowd. Once you stop being so secretive and get plans out into the open, you’ll find that others will be more than happy to help you get them off the ground. Just don’t take anyone for granted, and don’t gloss over mistakes. Face everything as it arises and leave no margin for error.

Pisces

(Feb. 19 - March 20) You will have many options to choose from this month, so work out what suits you best, not what’s best for someone else. Your love life and social life seems to be on a roll and you seem to be smouldering emotionally, so make the most of what’s going on around you. Although you’re more than capable of working on your own and getting good results, some times it’s nice to work as a team so that you can bounce ideas off each other then share the glory when projects you’ve worked on together become a success.
