70th Anniversary
Seventy years is impressive to see how much the church has grown. Know that God is smiling on this day as the church reaches another milestone. Thank you for all you do, may it continue for many more years.
Rev. Dr. Clarence Norman, Sr. Rev. Dr. Rashad Moore Founding Pastor Current PastorOn Wednesday, March 4, 1953, a group of twenty men and women, inspired by their calling from God, gathered to establish the First Baptist Mission of Williamsburg. Led by Sis. Bessie Herbert, the first meeting took place at her home on Reid Avenue in Brooklyn. The gathering commenced with the hymn, "He'll Understand and Say Well Done." Clarence Norman, chosen as the spiritual leader, read from the Gospel of John, chapter 14. Sis. Elizabeth Stubbs was elected as the Church Clerk, and Deacon John Bedden as the Treasurer, serving temporarily as officers.
Just three days later, on Saturday, March 7, 1953, Sis. Ethel Brown hosted the inaugural prayer service at her home. Soon after, Luther Reid secured a storefront on Throop Avenue to accommodate the growing mission. Although not yet recognized as a church and lacking an ordained spiritual leader, the "First Baptist Mission of Williamsburg" began its journey.
Recognition came on April 30, 1953, when the New Hope Baptist Association officially acknowledged the mission as the "First Baptist Church of Williamsburg," a Missionary Baptist Church. Clarence Norman was ordained and appointed Pastor for an initial one-year term.
In 1954, the congregation relocated to 15 Moore Street, which they eventually purchased for $25,000 in 1956. Reverend Clarence Norman Sr. provided strong leadership, leading the church's growth and extending his pastorate indefinitely.
However, in 1961, the City of New York acquired the Moore Street property for a housing project, necessitating another relocation. On April 2, 1962, the church acquired a building on Monroe Street in Brooklyn for $97,000. Tragically, in December 1962, a fire destroyed a significant portion of the new church, leaving only the gym and Sunday school rooms intact. Worship resumed on January 7, 1963, but searching for a new worship space lasted nearly five years.
Finally, on July 1, 1967, the First Baptist Church of Crown
122 Throop Avenue Monroe StreetHeights settled into its current location at 450 Eastern Parkway, previously owned by Park Manor Caterers, Inc. The church formally changed its name to the First Baptist Church of Crown Heights in October 1969.
Under the anointed leadership of Pastor Clarence Norman Sr., the church addressed community issues, such as job training, housing development, and services for the homeless and elderly. Under his leadership, Rev. Norman ordained Reverends Karim Camara, Beaulah Smith, Christine Caton, Ava Jolley, and Iana Ryan to the Gospel Ministry. Ministries were launched, transforming the community and impacting countless lives.
In 2011, Rev. Daryl G. Bloodsaw became the Assistant Pastor, working closely with Pastor Norman to implement new programs and prepare the church for ministry in the 21st century. Upon Pastor Norman's passing on July 8, 2015, the church overwhelmingly voted to elevate Rev. Bloodsaw to the position of Pastor. He served in this capacity until September 2019.
On January 19, 2020, Rev. Rashad Raymond Moore, a young minister from Brooklyn who had served at The Abyssinian Baptist Church of Harlem, was installed as the third Pastor. Building upon the legacies of Pastors Clarence Norman and Daryl Bloodsaw, Rev. Moore led the church through the challenges of the Covid-19 pandemic, establishing a robust online presence and keeping the congregation connected and encouraged.
Under Rev. Moore's leadership, the First Baptist adapted to the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic. Sunday services were held virtually from April 2020 to September 5, 2021. Finally, on Sunday, September 12, 2021, the church joyfully reopened for in-person worship with COVID-19 restrictions. Several ministries and initiatives were created during the pandemic to unite and uplift us during a difficult season: Thankful Thursdays offered weekly morning prayers led by Deacon Ronald Newman. The Golden Life Ministry, led by Rev. Dr. Marilyn Ava Jolley, engaged in virtual discussions. The Young Adults Ministry, later renamed the Ever-Evolving Experience (E3), provided a space for young adults to connect and grow in faith. The Healing Circle was formed as a supportive space for those navigating the grief journey following the pandemic.
As the First Baptist looks ahead, we do so with hope and anticipation. Throughout our 70year journey, we have witnessed the faithfulness of God guiding our steps. Under the leadership of Pastor Clarence Norman Sr., Pastor Daryl G. Bloodsaw, and currently, Pastor Rashad Raymond Moore, we have embraced challenges, adapted to new ways of worship, and launched impactful ministries. With gratitude for the past and a shared vision for the future, we move forward united in faith, ready to shine as a beacon of hope and love in our community.
In 1954, on the occasion of the First Anniversary, Rev. Clarence Norman Sr. wrote, “We hope that our church will be a house by the side of the road to be a friend to all.” For 70 years, the Friendly Church on the Hill has been an unwavering lighthouse of hope to countless individuals and families. This truth is evident not only in the collective stories of our congregation but also in my personal First Baptist story.
As a child, I witnessed my grandmother's courageous battle against Alzheimer's Disease, including the night she wandered from her home and was later found two miles away at the doors of First Baptist. In her state of confusion, she believed she had arrived for the South Carolina Club Anniversary. Amidst fading memory and confusion, First Baptist became the familiar house on the side of the road for my grandmother, just as Rev. Norman envisioned.
Today, I am deeply honored to serve as the Pastor of the First Baptist Church of Crown Heights. I am humbled by our church's rich legacy, encouraged by the love of our congregation, and excited for the promising future ahead of us. This 70th Anniversary Souvenir Journal is a testament to our remarkable journey as a church family. Our Souvenir Journal Committee and Church Anniversary Ministry have curated a collection of archival treasures from past celebrations, heartfelt contributions from our various boards and ministries, and messages from community partners, sister churches, and organizations. I sincerely appreciate the tireless efforts of the 70th Gala and Journal Committee and the unwavering support of our officers, members, and friends for their invaluable contributions to this momentous milestone celebration.
Through countless testimonies like my grandmother’s story, we have seen the power of God transform our community. As we celebrate our 70th Church Anniversary, let us reflect on the legacy of faith and love that Rev. Norman envisioned. Let us honor the Great Cloud of Witnesses who paved the way and the profound impact we continue to have on our community.
May this celebration inspire us to continue to SHINE as the friend by the side of the road.
In Greater Service,
Reverend Rashad Raymond Moore, Ph.D.To laugh often and much; To win the respect of intelligent people and the affection of children; To earn the appreciation of honest critics and endure the betrayal of false friends; To appreciate beauty, To find the best in others, To leave the world a bit better, whether by a healthy child, a garden patch or a redeemed social condition; To know even one life has breathed easier because you have lived. This is to have succeeded.
First Baptist, we have succeeded because we have boldly gone where humanity may not have had the strength to go. We have not been afraid to stand up and speak up for the least of these. We are celebrating seventy years because we have been rooted and anchored in Christ. On Christ the solid rock we have stood because we know that without that foundation, we never could have made it.
Let us continue to work the work of God for the next seventy years. We have come a long way, but we still have a long way to go.
Congratulations!!!
Reverend Dr. Christine Caton Assistant PastorLet your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father which is in Heaven. In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to our Father who is in Heaven.

Dear Friends:
Religious communities across the five boroughs are essential threads in the rich cultural tapestry that unites and sustains New Yorkers, and they remind us of our responsibility to lift one another up every day. The values of compassion and generosity, for which our city is known, have long been upheld by the many houses of worship that become pillars in their communities. In that spirit, today I am pleased to join in celebrating the 70th anniversary of the First Baptist Church of Crown Heights.
New Yorkers take immense pride in their city’s vibrant coalition of faith communities that inspire others to act with charity, kindness, and love. Over the past 70 years, First Baptist Church of Crown Heights, founded by 20 women and men as the First Baptist Mission of Williamsburg, has been a vital part of Brooklyn’s Crown Heights and Williamsburg communities. This venerable house of worship has forged an inspired legacy around the words the Apostle Paul wrote in his first letter to the church at Corinth: “No eye has seen, no ear has heard, and no mind has imagined what God has prepared for those who love him.” Despite difficult setbacks such as a devastating fire two days before Christmas in 1962, and navigating the COVID-19 pandemic, from which many longtime, beloved members lost their lives this incredible church family, powered by faith, friendship, and fellowship, forged a path forward.
Faith is the driving force of any great mission, and my Administration is committed to ensuring that people of all beliefs and cultures feel respected, safe, and welcome in our city. I am proud to count First Baptist Church of Crown Heights as an ally in this mission and applaud its leadership and parishioners for its tremendously positive impact on so many New Yorkers. Together, we will forge a better, brighter future for all.
Sincerely,
Eric Adams MayorJune23,2023

Dear Friends:
Please accept my congratulations as the First Baptist Church of Crown Heights celebrates its 70th Church Anniversary Gala, honoring generations of pastoral leadership and excellence. I am honored to have the opportunity to recognize the First Baptist Church of Crown Heights (FBCCH) and its leadership on this auspicious occasion.
Since 1953, First Baptist Mission of Williamsburg, as it was formerly known, led the community in fellowship under the leadership of the founding pastor, Clarence Norman, Sr. For decades Reverend Norman, Sr. guided the church through its ordination to the First Baptist Church of Williamsburg to its final construction in Crown Heights in 1967. Quickly known as a central religious institution and community hub, FBCCH provided essential services for all ages, implemented various ministries, and transformed the community, changing innumerable lives.
Under Rev. Norman’s leadership, FBCCH grew in prominence and ordained community leaders like former Assemblyman Rev. Karim Camara, Rev. Ava Jolley, and Rev. Beaulah Smith. For 62 years, Rev. Norman stewarded FBCCH until his passing in 2015. Rev. Daryl G. Bloodsaw shepherded the church's ministry into the 21st century. As the church leader, he was instrumental in ushering in new initiatives and programs while keeping traditions. Following Rev. Bloodsaw’s departure, the church appointed Rev. Rashad Raymond Moore, a vibrant leader from Abyssinian and the third pastor.
As FBCCH embarks on a new decade, let us celebrate the accomplishments of its illustrious past. Thank you to FBCCH's indomitable legacy of pastoral and ecumenical history. With Rev. Moore at the helm, I know the church will be the fulcrum of religiosity in Crown Heights. Please accept my congratulations as FBCCH celebrates its 70th church anniversary.
Sincerely,
Brian A. Cunningham New York State Assembly District 43, BrooklynTo the Members of the First Baptist Church of Crown Heights,
I extend my warmest congratulations to each and every one of you as you celebrate the momentous occasion of the 70th Church Anniversary of the First Baptist Church of Crown Heights This milestone is a testament to the unwavering dedication and perseverance of the generations who have carried the Church forward, from its humble beginnings as the First Baptist Mission of Williamsburg in 1953 to its cherished home in Crown Heights since 1967.
With God's grace and the steadfast leadership of your pastors, the First Baptist Church has flourished into a vibrant fellowship, providing a relevant ministry that touches the lives of many. In the face of unprecedented challenges brought about by the recent COVID-19 global pandemic, your resilience and determination have been truly inspiring. Navigating these difficult times has required immense strength and unity, and I commend the First Baptist Church of Crown Heights for its unwavering commitment to the well-being of its congregation and the wider community. It is my honor representing you in the State Senate.
I applaud the tireless efforts of everyone involved in organizing this momentous celebration, and I have no doubt that it will be a joyous occasion filled with reflection, gratitude, and fellowship Once again, congratulations on reaching this remarkable milestone. In 2017, the two boards merged, forming a unified Board of Deacons. Today, the Board of Deacons assists the Pastor in leading worship and provides leadership in serving the benevolent and spiritual needs of both members and the broader community.

Toni Knight, SupervisorThe First Anniversary Service of the church took place from May 9-14, 1954 Sister Bessie Herbert served as the President of the Church Anniversary Committee (as it was called at the time). The opening song for the service was "We've Come This Far By Faith". We, too, have reached this point in our journey by relying on faith and the support of our founders. We are deeply grateful for our founder, Rev. Clarence Norman, Sr. When asked how he remained a pastor for 60 years during our 60th anniversary, he responded, "If it had not been for the Lord on my side, tell me where would I be?"
The Church Anniversary Ministry acknowledges Rev Dr Clarence Norman Sr and his wonderful wife, Mrs Ellen Norman, as exemplifying true Christians We commend him for his 62 years of devoted service and for providing us with the opportunity to celebrate our 70th Anniversary. As we reflect on the past 69 years and embark on our platinum year, we have countless reasons to be grateful as a church. We take pride in our rich history and express gratitude to Rev. Norman and all the founders who gathered in June 1953 to establish The First Baptist Church of Williamsburg From there to here, we have become The First Baptist Church of Crown Heights

May First Baptist Church continually bask in the love of Jesus which binds us together.
May this 70th Church Anniversary come with the blessing of a new season that is spiritually uplifting to all and that we continue to radiate the Love of Jesus Christ to the world.
The Floral Ministry, established over sixty years ago, is dedicated to expressing its faith through the artful arrangement of plants and flowers in the House of the Lord. Their purpose is to enhance Worship Services and other Church activities with their skillful and graceful designs. Additionally, the ministry extends its care to the sick, shut-in, elderly, and hospitalized patients by delivering flowers to them. They are also available to offer guidance in selecting flowers and plants for special occasions, including homegoing services Sister Maggie Reed, the founder of the Floral Club, served as its first President for a remarkable 28 years.

WE ARE SO RICHLY BLESSED & PROUD TO BE A PART OF THIS COMMUNITY OF FAITH BASED BELIEVERS WHO LOVE THIS "FRIENDLY CHURCH ON THE HILL."

"To God be All The Glory for the great things He has done."
The purpose of this Ministry is to foster fellowship, harmony, and cooperation among the members of the church through acts of love, prayers, blessings, and spiritual support. The Ministry aims to provide loving support to the pastor. Our Founder, Rev. Dr. Clarence Norman Senior, envisioned the continuity of First Baptist and expressed his desire for its enduring existence, stating, "I won't be here always. I want First Baptist to keep going."
Here we are—still growing strong.
"For just as each of us has one body with many members, and these members do not all have the same function, so in Christ we, though many, form one body, and each member belongs to all the others."
Romans 12:4-5

THE FIRST BAPTIST CHURCH OF CROWN HEIGHTS
Sing unto him a new song; play skillfully with a loud noise.
Psalm 33:3
for 70 years of blessing others, encouraging hearts, and ushering generations of families to the Lord.
Higher Praise, which started in 2010, is the First Baptist Church of Crown Heights' young adult choir. This ministry is devoted to giving God the Highest praise. Our founder Reverend Dr. Clarence Norman Sr., prayed over Higher Praise many years ago. Today we are still committed to God, promoting education, lifting our voices in praise, and supporting our church family.
ORDONNA SARGEANT, PRESIDENTIn 1982, under the guidance of Rev. Dr. Clarence Norman Sr., Pastor, the Male Chorus was established by Deacon Adam Epps, who also served as the President. Over the years, the Male Chorus was renamed the Unique David Chavis Male Chorus to honor Deacon David Chavis, the first Deacon Board Chairman. Following President Adam Epps' tenure, several individuals have served as Presidents, including Deacon Robert Fulmore, Brother William Clark, Brother Donald Sorrels, Deacon Shirley Banks, and Brother Clarence Jenkins.
As we celebrate this new anniversary, we fervently pray for the blessings of a spiritually uplifting season for the church and all its members.
WE CONGRATULATE OUR CONGREGATION IN THIS ENDEAVOR AND PRAY THAT GOD WILL CONTINUE TO SMILE ON OUR CONGREGATION AS WE FORGE AHEAD TO BIGGER AND BETTER THINGS IN SERVING GOD'S PEOPLE AND LIFTING UP THE NAME OF JESUS CHRIST IN SONG.
EDITH BRAXTON NEWMAN, PRESIDENT KENNETH BRANTLEY, VICE PRESIDENT PATRICIA RAYSOR, SECOND VICE PRESIDENTMake a joyful noise unto the Lord, all ye lands. Serve the Lord with gladness: come before his presence with singing.
Know ye that the Lord he is God: it is he that hath made us, and not we ourselves; we are his people, and the sheep of his pasture.
Enter into his gates with thanksgiving, and into his courts with praise: be thankful unto him, and bless his name.
For the Lord is good; his mercy is everlasting; and his truth endureth to all generations. Psalm 100
Reverend Dr. Christine Caton - President
During the pandemic, Reverend Dr Rashad Raymond Moore recognized the need for a space where not-so-young adults could thrive and stay connected to First Baptist. Thus, the Young Adults ministry was created in January 2021. Chaired by Keena Humphrey, the group met monthly via Zoom, discussing finances, friendship, and even engaging in a 20-day Prayer Reset. Renamed the Ever Evolving Experience (E3), their purpose is to connect young adults to First Baptist through building healthy relationships, forming a faith community, and sharing transformative experiences. E3 eagerly looks forward to continuing the legacy of First Baptist on its 70th Anniversary

Woodburn coordinated with the Watoto Child Care Ministries to have the Watoto Children's Choir Ministered to us twice in 2016 and 2018. Their performance included stories of homeless orphans rescued, nurtured, and rebuilt by the Watoto Ministries. Clarence R. Isler, Sr., & Naomi IslerRobert was a man of superlatively high standards, sincere, earnest, industrious. Self-sacrificing and even comical at times. No one who knew him is likely to forget the candor of his speech, the courage of his faith and the warm brightness of his friendship. His genial personality and generous instincts are certainly missed by the Church Anniversary Ministry and The First Baptist Church at large.
Martha was a lady of distinction, quiet and devoted to her ideas. Her life was the epitome of courage, vision, deep faith and love for her fellowman. Any task that she undertook, she followed it through to the end. She was much esteemed by the members of The First Baptist Church of Crown Heights and especially The Church Anniversary Ministry. We will continue to follow her deeds and ideals that she instilled in all of us. The memories of Robert and Martha will forever be etched in our hearts.

The LORD is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? The LORD is the stronghold of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?
Psalm 27:1
Blessings for believers are God's favor and grace that can be transferred from generation to generation These blessings are evident at FBCCH Rev Norman has bestowed several blessings upon this body of believers It is evident in their growth, endeavors, and accomplishments.
Rev. Norman excelled in his expressions of love, humility, and understanding. He knew the importance of the church's role service to our brothers, sisters, and the community at large. Many will agree Rev. Norman's Legacy will and should transcend generations. He was a great pastor that always showered his congregation with much love The FBCCH family should be proud to be a part of such a great body
Over the years, my mom, a member of FBCCH, always extended an invitation to me. So, I visited occasionally over the years with my family. There was always a warm spirit that radiated in the atmosphere of the church. My heart rejoiced in the way Rev. Norman continually praised his members. He always “stated he had the best congregation.” There was great joy in the reciprocating feelings the members had towards him. My mom Alva Hall loved all her pastors' messages and bought many of their tapes.
In addition, Rev Norman was secure in who he was and called to be He was not puffed up or egotistical He was not afraid to share the pulpit with others He encouraged and embraced the three dynamic female pastors to be his associates He mentored the next generation in whatever their area of concentration. He had a special gift of teaching and empowering the members. He gave them the confidence to complete their task efficiently and always showed his gratitude.
Most of all, he had great foresight in choosing Rev. Daryl G. Bloodsaw as his successor He also played a great role in the future of the FBCCH family, no matter how short or long his tenure was God’s blessings were and are still being magnified I also observed and trusted Rev Daryl G Bloodsaw to have good foresight Rev Bloodsaw had God's favor and blessings when he recommended his successor, the Rev Rashad Moore
Rev. Rashad Moore has watered our souls over the most difficult year in history and has grown to express all the positive attributes of the previous pastors. I can name a few from my observation. With humility, foresight, gratitude, patience, understanding and the ability to think outside the norm, Rev Rashad Moore is an asset to the FBCCH family Thank you for the groups formed during the pandemic that kept us in touch with each other
The blessings of the Lord and the blessings of a great pastor will be evident in its congregation Therefore, when I left my longstanding church family I chose FBCCH February 2016.
