Summer is made of magic. Okay…
I see you rolling your eyes but seriously! As a kid I
remember feeling like every day was an adventure in the summer. Whether or not that adventure ended with scraped knees and elbows was irrelevant because all I cared about was the joy of it all. I remember running shoeless EVERYWHERE. The gratitude I felt for the cool dusty grass and the relief it provided my burning feet. It was magic! The chlorine, the companion style bike rides, fireflies, the dime section (yeah I am getting older) candies that were only found on the bottom shelf at the gas station… Pure magic! And still as I got a little old, I remember gas station slushies, camping, back road driving, hiking, and so many other adventures.. Summer is magic! And I wonder why as adults we forget. Is there one adult that would dare say that they are maxed out on joy and adventure in their day to day life? I am making it my summer’s mission to enjoy the little magical things about life and the season. Will you join me?

Sand Springs is a shining star in Northeast Oklahoma, and it’s always a pleasure to visit your mom-and-pop shops, scenic parks, and familyfriendly events. Since 2012, more than 10,000 new residents have decided to call Sand Springs home. More people mean more sales tax dollars, which translates to better schools, infrastructure, and opportunities. To get people to move to Oklahoma, we first need to get them here. Tourism is a major economic driver for our state, and that’s not just because it’s our third largest industry. ugust is National Back to School month and the Sand Springs students will be headed back to the classroom. We are here to offer up some tips and tricks on how both parents and kids can make the most of the upcoming school year.
CREATE A ROUTINE - EVERY NIGHT AND EVERY MORNING! You would be surprised at how much a routine can help elevate your mood and productivity throughout the day. Routines help with better sleep and less stress in both children and adults. Here are a few suggestions to get you started:

Making sure that you are going to bed and waking up about the same time each evening and morning will help your mind and performance levels - both important aspects of tackling classes and managing the home when everyone gets back from a long day.
FIND YOUR SCHOOL SUPPLY LIST EARLY! We know that back to school shopping is some of the best memories for kids. New clothes, the big pack of Crayons, and picking out your favorite color of notebook are all things you will keep with you all year long. Start now finding back to school supplies at your local store and be fully prepared when the first day of school starts. SET GOALS! A goal is something we create for ourselves and something we wish to achieve through our own hard work. By setting goals for the upcoming school year, you are setting yourself up for success! Some examples might include:

Learn a new skill or find a new hobby. Maybe you have always wanted to join a school organization, but just never have, this is the year to do it! Is one subject harder than the others for you? No big deal, make it a goal to take time outside of school to improve your knowledge on that subject.
Start on any homework as soon as you get home from school, work, or after school activities. This will help create a habit to ensure that work gets done before play. Try to work in some fitness time. Now is the perfect time to start implementing a walk, run, bike ride, yoga, you name it, into your daily routine.

The Tulsa Boys’ Home is located in the community of Sand

Founded in 1918 as just a small two-story house in downtown Tulsa, the Tulsa Boys’ Home has grown to be the largest residential treatment facility serving over 13,500 boys. “If I were to distill it down, I would say that the Tulsa Boys’ Home is about healing and about hope,” said Mr. Conway. “We take in some of the most broken hearted, broken minded, broken spirited boys and we help them heal from past trauma that a lot of them have experienced from early childhood.” The programs that Tulsa Boys’ Home implements for their residents are equine and recreation programs, substance abuse treatment, and an on-campus alternative school with veteran, certified teachers.
“Everything we do is therapeutic for the boys,” said Mr. Conway. “Our school is a therapeutic alternative school and our horses that we have are part of our equine therapy program. There are a lot of elements of fun that are embedded in our day-to-day operations, but everything we do is in effort to help them heal from their wounds and to develop a sense of hope.” The teachers at the school have 152 years of combined experience that allow them to work closely with the boys. While at Tulsa Boys’ Home, the boys who once had lower grades find themselves receiving mostly As and Bs and finding enjoyment in learning because of the dedicated teachers, tutors, and direct care staff that work with the boys on their schooling. The recreation programs are meant to help promote teamwork, cooperation, communitication, and respect for rules and boundaries. Recently the campus has added new additions to the recreational program such as pickleball and frisbee golf. The equine therapy program is to serve the boys in both individual and group sessions to help with their healing. It gives the boys a chance to connect with the horses and equine therapists to help increase their self-worth and confidence. The substance abuse treatment program provides best practices in alcohol and drug treatment, in order for the boys to continue with a sober, healthy lifestyle. To help with this program the Tulsa Boys’ Home uses different methods of therapy that are endorsed by the Oklahoma Department of Mental Health and Substance Abuse Services. The Tulsa Boys’ Home provides tours for anyone who is interested in learning more about their mission and work through Hope Tours. Mr. Conway, as well as other staff, express to visitors the mission behind the Tulsa Boys’ Home and how their programs benefit those who stay there. Hope Tours are from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m., every Tuesday evening. Volunteers are also welcome at the home in various ways. Whether you want to be a mentor to the residents, become foster or adoptive parents, or donate through financial assistance, the Tulsa Boys’ Home is appreciative of all their willing participants. The organization is always looking for volunteers to become one on one mentors for the boys, one on one or group tutors, or lodge mentors where the volunteer or group of volunteers have the opportunity to spend quality time with all the boys in a lodge. Mr. Conway also encourages people to support fundraising efforts and events held by the Tulsa Boys’ Home. Their next event will be their 6th annual Tulsa Boys’ Home Barbeque, Beer, & Cigars at Neff Brewing. The event will be from 6 to 10 p.m., August 11, 2022 and cost $125 per person. Welcome to the dog days of summer 𑁋 the hottest time of the year in Sand Springs. And while we humans can keep cool with a quick dip in the pool or a tall glass of ice-cold lemonade, our furry friends need a little help from us making sure they don’t overheat. Here are five ways to keep your pet safe this summer: Know the signs of overheating in pets Drooling, vomiting, excessive panting or difficulty breathing, and mild weakness are common symptoms of heatstroke. Other signs may include seizures, bloody diarrhea, or an elevated temperature. The condition may cause permanent organ damage, so it’s important to call us if your dog or cat is exhibiting symptoms of overheating. Keep in mind that animals with flat faces, such as bulldogs and Persian cats, are more susceptible to overheating because they can’t pant as effectively as other breeds. Take walks during the morning or evening Because midday tends to be the warmest part of the day and the pavement heats up quickly, it’s best to get your dog’s exercise in early or late. To make your daily stroll with your pup even more enjoyable, try going during sunrise or sunset. (Oklahoma is known for its gorgeous skies, after all!) Never leave a pet in a parked vehicle Even with the windows cracked, the temperature can soar to 120° in a matter of minutes. Your pet can easily experience heatstroke, and even leaving the air conditioner running isn’t a failsafe. Instead, always bring your pet indoors when you’re out and about or arriving home. Haircuts are okay, but don’t shave your pet The layers of fur on your dog or cat’s coats protects them from sunburn and overheating, so shaving their fur is counterproductive. Your pet only needs a trim, and regularly grooming and brushing your pets is the best way to help them stay cool. Provide extra water that your pet can easily access Dogs and cats can become dehydrated quickly, so offering plenty of fresh water is key. (Don’t be surprised if you have to refill their bowl a couple times each day!) You can even toss a few ice cubes in your dog’s water dish for some refreshing entertainment. SAND SPRINGS FAMILY DENTISTRY Recipe: Memaw’s Pink Fluff In a large bowl combine: 1 24 oz package cottage cheese *1 large box of strawberry jello (powder) *1 cup of fresh chopped strawberries 1/2 cup of chopped pecans 1 large container of cool whip Stir all ingredients together. Chill in the refrigerator for 30 mins and serve. *Other options are orange jello and mandarin oranges or peach jello and diced peaches
EL PATRON COCINA MEXICANA Recipe: Margarita 2 ounces tequila 1/2 ounce orange liqueur 1 ounce lime juice, freshly squeezed 1/2 ounce agave syrup Garnish: lime wheel Garnish: kosher salt

GINA MYERS Recipe: Yummy Strawberry Cake 1 box white cake mix 4 eggs 1 small box strawberry jello 1 cup smashed strawberries Mix all ingredients together and bake according to directions on the cake mix box. ICING: 1 cup smashed strawberries 1 stick melted butter 1 box powdered sugar Mix well all ingredients. Put icing on the cake while it is still warm. Enjoy!
REBECCA DAVIS Recipe: Blueberry Cream Cheese Squares 1 & 1/2 cup of sugar 1/4 cup of cornstarch 1/2 cup of water 3 cups of blueberries 1 cup of flour 1/2 cup of chopped nuts 2 8 ounce packages of cream cheese 2 teaspoons of vanilla 8 ounces of cool whip Extra chopped nuts for topping Mix flour, butter, and nuts together and spread in the bottom of a 9 x 13 glass pan. Bake at 400 degrees for 12 minutes and let cool completely. Combine 1/2 cup of sugar, cornstarch, water, and blueberries in a pan. Bring to a boil, cook until thick, and let cool. Mix remaining sugar, cream cheese, and vanilla together. Spread over the cooled crust. Spoon blueberry mixture over cream cheese mixture. Garnish with Cool Whip and nuts then refrigerate until cool.
LEEANN FOLTZ Recipe: Ranch Seasoned Bacon Wrapped Speared Pickles 1 packet of ranch seasoning 1 package of bacon 1 jar of speared pickles Turn the oven on to 400 degrees. Take your pickles out of the jar and lay them on a cutting board. Sprinkle the ranch seasoning over all the pickles, then wrap the pickles with the strips of bacon. Then, set them on your cooking pan and put them in the oven. Let cook for about 10 minutes, or until bacon is cooked as desired. Take the pan out, let them cool for about 5 minutes, and enjoy! eing a Sandite is something that adults and children from Sand Springs say proudly. Proclaiming the greatness that comes from Sand Springs. But have you ever thought
about what being a Sandite means? Do you know what a Sandite is? We think that to have Sandite Pride, one must be able to identify what that pride is. The word Sandite is actually a substance that is used on railroads to help with leaves that are on the tracks.

Sandite?
When wet leaves fall on the track it causes a loss of friction between the track and train wheels. Sandite helps with this problem and the substance is made up of sand, antifreeze, and steel shot. Now… that is the technical term of sandite, but we think it is so much more. The people of Sand Springs are who make up the term Sandite. The history itself can be fun and interesting to learn and hear about, but ultimately it comes down to the people in our town. Charles E. Page, town founder, helped mark the idea of what Sandites are made of and why they are the way they are. He brought with him resilience, hard work, and a kind heart when he arrived in Sand Springs. This paved the way for how the town of Sand Springs would continue their legacy. We asked the people of Sand Springs what being a Sandite means to you. The words that were used to describe what being a Sandite meant to this town were words like loyalty and possibilities, and we could not agree more. Being a Sandite does not mean that we simply put a mascot on our shirt and cheer on our school teams. While that is a good thing, being a Sandite means more. It means that we support each other in times of need. It means that we provide help to our neighbors. It means that we bring resilience, toughness, and hospitality to everything we do. It means that a Sandite is who we are not what we are, and we are proud of it. What does being a Sandite mean to you? 74063 HOW TO BE A SANDITE ON $74.63 WITH BRAYDEN AND ASHLEY BLAUW
W
e love the businesses and town attractions that Sand Springs has to offer, so we wanted to check some out! With just $74.63, we sent Brayden and Ashley Blauw out to make a mark on our town. Brayden and Ashley are the youth pastors at Reach Church in Sand Springs. They have a passion for the youth ministry and love being a part of this town through their work at Reach Church. We thought they would be the perfect couple to explore Sand Springs.

During their excursion, Brayden and Ashley started out at Livi Lee's Donuts with a glazed sprinkle and cake donut. What better way to start out the day than at Livi Lee’s?! This donut shop, which now has five locations, started in Sand Springs and is a staple in the community. They spent $3.28 at Livi Lee’s Donuts. After a tasty breakfast at Livi Lee’s, Brayden and Ashley made their way to YellowHouse Kids Boutique to do some shopping. Brayden and Ashley are four months pregnant
and wanted to find the perfect baby outfit for their baby boy. After spending some time looking at all the cute outfits, they finally decided on buying a camo outfit that will be perfect for their first child. There is no doubt, the Blauws will be making their way back to YellowHouse once their little boy arrives. They spent $29.35 at YellowHouse Kids Boutique. Located right next door was the Blauws next stop, The Candle Warehouse, which is a candle bar and boutique. This event was one of the highlights of the day! Brayden and Ashley participated in the store’s candle pouring workshop and created their own candles. The owner and staff were extremely friendly and helpful, guiding them through how to measure the wax, blend the ingredients, and insert the wick. They then picked out their scent and jar to pour the candle into. Because Brayden is about to become a father and it was right before Father’s Day weekend, of course they had to pick a dad-themed jar! They spent $35.00 at The Candle Warehouse. They ended the day with snow cones at Sandlot SnoBalls. This was the perfect way to cool off and end the day as it started - with a sweet treat! The flavors they decided on were Barbie, which is a mix of strawberry and pink lemonade, and Strawberry Kiwi. Brayden and Ashley took their snow cones to Case Community Park to eat them and relax from their full day of activities. They spent $7.00 at Sandlot Sno-Balls. We are so glad Brayden and Ashley made the most of their day and visited five different places in our beautiful town of Sand Springs. Sa nd Spr i ngs Educ a ti on Fo unda ti on The Sand Springs Education Foundation is a nonprofit that was founded in 1989. The first fundraiser that helped form the base of the Foundation was the “Box Supper,” where the Sand Springs community was asked to bring school supplies or cash donations as their ticket to receive a free meal at the high school. A man named Montie Box led the fundraiser which then helped with the formation of the SSEF. The creation of the Foundation was to provide private sector and community support for the Sand Springs School System by allocating financial contributions. Their primary focus is on their Grants to Teachers program where teachers are able to write grants for supplies or materials they may need to further the students’ education and their teaching efforts. The mission of the SSEF is, “to serve as a private partner of the Sand Springs Public Schools, providing grants to support programs and teaching projects for which funds are not amiable from federal, state, and local sources.” The SSEF has many goals, all for the betterment of the Sand Springs school system and community. With the help of those involved in the organization, they give new and greater opportunities for students and teachers. The Foundation encourages the community to become involved in various ways. Volunteers are welcome at numerous events throughout the year that are held to raise funds for the Foundation. Monetary funds can be made by calling the office at 918-2456779. opportunities for students, providing enrichments to the school curriculum, stimulating creativity by funding teaching projects and materials, encouraging community involvement within the school system, and much more. Students and teachers within the Sand Springs school system are growing their education and curriculum with each donation. One of the many ways the SSEF involves the community into their efforts is by inducting past Sand Springs students into their Hall of Fame. Since 1989 the SSEF has invited two recipients to join those who embody what it means to be a Sandite into the Hall of Fame each year. The recipients must first be nominated to be considered. To be considered, the inductees must have spent three years in the Sand Springs schools after sixth grade, spent eight years in Sand Springs schools, or spent the last two years of high school in Sand Springs schools and graduated from the high school. The individuals who receive the honor of an inductee have gone above and beyond in their personal life and professional career. They have attained a position of respect, impact, or influence in the Sand Springs community or achieved regional prominence or exceptional level of accomplishment in their field or area of speciality. The SSEF honors their Hall of Fame Inductees each year during a banquet for their support and
time donated to the Sand Springs School System. During the event, the foundation also holds a silent auction with themed baskets to raise money to provide grants and other opportunities for the schools. The banquet honoring their inductees has been held since 1990.

he Sandite athletic teams work hard all year long, practicing for their awaited season. Here you can find the upcoming calendar season full of games for all teams. The Sand Springs Volleyball team will start their regular season games before Sandites have their first day of school. With many games on the schedule, the Sandite volleyball team looks forward to the season with a new coach. Skylar Jackson recently joined the Sand Springs volleyball team as their head coach. Skylar’s husband, Derek Jackson, was the coach of the Sand Springs volleyball team until December 2021. Skylar soon took over as head coach and has held tryouts and a summer camp for the Sandites, prior to the season beginning at the end of July. Previously, Skylar was an assistant coach at Broken Arrow High School and coaches for Club Virago. Skylar started playing volleyball in 6th grade and continued to play and 30 WeAreSandSprings.com | July 2022
love the sport into her high school and college years, ultimately leading her to become a coach.

“I played four years of varsity volleyball and went on to play at SNU,” said Skylar. “I had many coaches who poured into my life and I wanted to be able to do the same for others. I know quite a few of the girls already, so I look forward to getting to know the rest of the girls and building lifelong relationships with them. We are excited to get better and do some big things this year.”
“Show up, come to games, and be a part of supporting our kids in person,” said Skylar. “Not much feels better than looking into the stands and seeing those faces of the people who support you. Of course, another way to support is to participate in our fundraisers. They help us do things for our girls so that money doesn’t stand in the way of opportunity.”
Junior high and high school sports are an integral part of students' lives in their teen years. It provides them with a team, a community, and skills that will stick with them throughout their lives. Sand Springs is encouraged to support the local school’s sports teams, cheering them on as they learn life lessons and as their athletic skills improve. Showing up for the teams shows that what they are investing their time in is important and they are supported by the town. It is key for the community to join together and they cheer on the athletes’ hard work, persistence, and diligence. Skylar
