President's Message Hello Ellerslie Community!

JUNE 2020 | ISSUE 4

HIGHLIGHTS:

President's Message Did You Know? Neighbourhood Watch Solidarity Message from our Social Director

These past months have been drastically different and have challenged us to figure out new ways of doing life, family and work. Balancing it out has been a new venture for all of us. Remember that your neighbors, friends and family are in the same storm, but not in the same boat. We are going through a time when our perceptions and needs are completely different from one another. Please be safe, kind and courteous. Think of others as you go through your day. IN EVERY ISSUE: When we do, life becomes more pleasant, fulfilling and Upcoming Events joyful. We also want to remind you that although some restrictions are being lifted, it is important that we continue to be safe and use caution. Playgrounds opened May 22nd. Â Please continue to social distance, bring your own hand sanitizer. and monitor your kids. COVID 19 relaunch guidance: https://www.alberta.ca/assets/documents/covid-19-relaunchguidance-playgrounds.pdf We really appreciate seeing people taking care of our community and its members. Families have taken time to help clean up garbage around ponds and trees, posting lost pets on our facebook page and working together to make this unique situation just a little better. We thank you for your time, effort and commitment to your community. Our Ellerslie Community League Board continues to meet on the 2nd Tuesday of the month. We have moved to an online format and you are still welcome to join us. We will continue to move forward on how we can impact Ellerslie and be a resource for our neighbors. Dan Schultz President of Ellerslie Community League

Did you know? You can use and buy temporary timber permits to harvest wood in designated Crown land areas! Backyard firepit season is upon us. We are constantly connecting with friends who own acreages/farms or buying the expensive wood from local stores. But what do you do if you don't have either of these options? In Alberta, a valid temporary timber permit (TM66) is required for small-scale, noncommercial or personal access to timber and trees on provincial Crown land. This permit grants the holder the legal authority to harvest in designated areas. If you wish to obtain a timber permit, you must be over the age of 18, be a resident of Alberta, and be in good standing with the Crown relating to timber, grazing and land use. Forest Product Tag (TM66) Cost is $5.00 (plus GST) and is valid for 30 days from the time of purchase. This permit entitles individuals to remove one of the following: 1. Three Christmas trees under 2.5 metres in height OR 2. 20 trees less than 2.5 metres in height for transplanting OR 3. Up to 5 cubic metres of roundwood timber (usually used for firewood). The number of trees cut depends on tree species and size, but it is approximately: 5 to 7 large coniferous trees (generally trees with needles) OR 4 to 6 deciduous trees (generally trees with leaves). Trees and timber are to be cut from designated Crown Provincial Land only. The permit must be with you at all times while cutting or transporting.

This information has been taken directly from Alberta.ca. For more FAQ's and Crown land locations, please visit https://www.alberta.ca/tree-cutting-permits.aspx

NEIGHBOURHOOD WATCH We have seen an increase in members posting about missing animals, bikes and vehicle break-ins. We just want to remind our community to lock up your possessions in your garage or backyard and to always lock your vehicle. While we are always on the look-out for these lost items, criminals have more time on their hands than ever before and are watching and waiting for us to slip up. The Edmonton Police Services is still here for us, just in a slightly different way!! Here is an Edmonton Police Services post that was shared on our facebook page that advises us the steps they have taken to protect their health and safety. "The EPS takes the health and safety of the public and our officers seriously. Just as we encourage the public to practice safe social distancing, we ask our officers to do the same when on and off duty. While this is not always practical in frontline policing, we are modifying some practices during these challenging times. One example is the use of smart phone cameras to photograph documents at vehicles stops and other interactions to provide adequate social distance and minimize the handling of documents. Theses images will only be used for reference during the time of the vehicle stop and will not be stored beyond the conclusion of the interaction. Officers are also encouraged to follow adequate social distancing when not involved in investigations or during well-needed breaks. These are challenging times and we are responding accordingly to serve the community in the safest possible way."

Solidarity While we were looking forward to what a new decade would bring, we were not thinking or preparing for a pandemic. There is no doubt that 2020 has seen some unprecedented measures to keep COVID-19 under control. Amidst self isolation, event cancellations and school closures, our community pulled together. It was wonderful to see neighbours reaching out to each other, offering child care to those who have no other options, and trying to keep positive during this difficult situation. That is true solidarity!

While we have made it past the peak of the outbreak and are seeing a phased re-opening of the economy, we still have some healing to do. Whether you were affected financially, emotionally or physically, we need time to get back to living healthy again. We still need to continue to look out for one another and be that smile for your neighbour who may be struggling to see the sunshine. This is what it means to be a community. THANK YOU ELLERSLIE!!!!

No act of kindness, no matter how small, is ever wasted.

Message from our Social Director Thank you Community of Ellerslie I want to thank our amazing community here in Ellerslie for being up for anything! Thank you for participating in events that we are having to come up with during these crazy times we are living in right now: Social distancing scavenger hunts; Online cooking classes; Book and recipe clubs and so on. It truly amazes me what people can do in time of crisis to help out our neighbors. Special shout out to a few people who have come forward to help us all through this time. Stephanie Markakis-Plouffe of Treats Baked by Stephanie for doing your Friday afternoon cooking classes. My daughter and I have enjoyed making fun items such as cinnamon buns and apple pie. You love what you do and it shows. I highly suggest you join in on her classes Friday. You will have a good time. Megan Yibba for putting together a virtual book club for you book worms out there to enjoy. Karen Baranec for creating fun weekly posts with recipe ideas. I know we are all probably running out of interesting ideas for dinners these days. Also, to Deanne Powell for getting started on posting some ideas and tips on decluttering and organizing. I know I have a lot of spare time these days and these tips are greatly appreciated. As well as Navdeep Singh Gulati for his fun little quizzes that I am sure everyone is getting a kick out of. If I have missed someone I’m truly sorry. This community makes me smile and I am grateful to be a part of it. Thank you everyone for all you do and I’m praying for “normal” life to return to us soon! Stay well and stay safe. Sincerely, Gisselle Willimus ECL Social Director

As Alberta continues to restrict gatherings during stage 1 of relaunch to protect Albertans’ health and limit the spread of COVID-19, we continue to postpone organizing any in person events. This hasn't stopped us from virtual events though! As per the "Message from our Social Director" on page 5, we have had many community members step up to provide virtual cooking, book club, regular recipes, organizing tips/tricks and quizzes to keep you on your toes. And we can't forget the two successful virtual Scavenger Hunt organized by our social director! Please keep your eyes on our facebook page for any virtual events that may be of interest to you, or if you have something virtual you can to offer members, please feel free to post it or contact one of our board members. Our ECL board meetings continue to happen virtually:

Puzzle All things related to our community! We have bunnies running around our community. Let's try the BUNNY BRAINTEASER! The puzzle, created by Hungarian artist Gergely Dudas, also known as Dudolf, shows 29 adorable bunnies sitting in five loose rows. Each rabbit has a combination of markings on its ears, face and chest, setting them apart from each other. But while 14 of the bunnies have a twin, there is one lone rabbit whose markings are totally unique. Can you find it?
