Welcome to this edition of the Crudwell Parish News. This is the last edition that will be edited by us, and we would like to take this opportunity to thank those many individuals who have given us such generous and positive comments about the quality and professionalism of the editions for which we have been responsible.

As we look forward to the dawn of a New Year, the sun rises over fields at Crudwell. Photograph taken from the A429, looking east (obviously!) From the lay-by opposite the Post Office.

FROM IAN MACE - OIL TANK THEFTS Many of you out there have oil tanks and I thought it might be a good idea to forward on to you so that you can keep an eye out. We have had 2x thefts of oil from properties in Seagry Hill. Approximately 200 litres of oil has been stolen from each oil tank (the entire tank). Suspects would have had to have knowledge that the tanks were there as they are in the rear garden of the properties, they are situated in a no through road in a rural location. The suspects have made a tidy job of taking the oil, hardly any spill etc, and in one case have even secured the bolt back on before leaving. First theft happened on 8/11 and the second on 20/11, both thought to have happened overnight. Please be vigilant if you have an oil tank in the garden, sensor lights and secure fencing will deter thefts of this nature.

WARNING FROM CHIPPENHAM POLICE

CHURCH CLEANERS

I just thought I'd let you know, we had another incident at Morrison's yesterday where an elderly male was approached by an Eastern European female. This female had a £10 note in her hand saying it was the elderly male’s. Then an Eastern European male approached the situation and said the £10 was his but asked the elderly male for change. During this interaction the elderly male’s debit card was stolen.

Our pre-Christmas coffee morning for the Church cleaning rota turned out to be a real damp squib as we were all so busy or poorly, so how about we have it in January on Monday 9 at 11am at the Mayfield Hotel.

Can you please let me know by phone 577572 or email: margaretenglish261@btinternet.com and I will very happily book the coffee/tea and lovely Mayfield goodies. Have a very healthy and happy 2013.

The Club held its club competition in the Village Hall recently. Twenty-one players competed. Triples were drawn and a knock-out tournament followed. The champions were newcomer Tony Hill, playing with Sandra Doel and Neville Doel who beat Keith Carter, Mike Lynch and Carmel Rogers. A Plate competition for first round losers was won by Denise Doggett, Anita Smith and Geoff Lane. Club Members provided a sumptuous buffet for all players and a number of non-playing club members.

MALMESBURY GARDEN CLUB

The Malmesbury League Knock-out Cup game between the two club team was eventually won by the Curlews who now take on Little Somerford for a place in the final. The Curlews remain at the top of the league and are still undefeated. The Coots are in third place and remain handily placed.

A Talk by Andrew Tolman on Gardens On Our Doorstep at Charlton Village Hall

We have played only one County League game in the recent past but what a game it turned out to be. Trowbridge were undefeated this season and have rarely lost on their own mats. Happily in a superb team performance, we managed to win 5 to 3 to cement our place at the top of the County League North. There are still many games to go but hopefully we can continue with ‘our winning ways’.

On Monday 14th January 2013 at 7.30pm Non members £1.00 donation.

CLARIFICATION In last month’s edition we published the winning entry in the Creative Writing competition. It was stated that the prize of a load of logs had been donated by Jonathan Capper. Mr. Capper has asked for it to be made clear that this should have been under the name of his business, Dirty Boots Estate Services Limited, and not under his own name. We hope that this clarifies the situation.

Short mat bowls recently featured on Saturday Live on Radio Wiltshire. We play a competitive but friendly sport. Whether you have played before or not, if you fancy having a go, come along to the Village Hall on either Thursday afternoons (2.30pm start) or Sunday evenings (7.30pm start). CRUDWELL CE PRIMARY SCHOOL Vacancy for Community Governor Our village school is a thriving, lively place for our children to learn and was awarded ‘outstanding’ at the last Ofsted inspection. The governing body requires a member of the local community with an interest in the future of education to join them for this to continue. Part of this role will be to liaise with village organisations when required. For further information please call Sarah Lindsay, Chair of Governors on 01666 575335 for further details. If you are interested in this role please get in touch by the 14 January.

NORTH WILTSHIRE VILLAGES FLOWER CLUB Wiltshire Good Neighbours has grown! The scheme has proved to be very successful over the last 2 years and from January 2013 everyone living in rural Wiltshire will have a Good Neighbour Co-ordinator to call on. This has meant a few changes and the Co-ordinators are now based around the Wiltshire Council Area Board areas. I now cover the whole of the Malmesbury Area – hence the change of contact details – see below. For the magazines, I try to do a topical theme and in Spring was foolish enough to talk of how to keep cool in the summer – did I jinx the weather? In the hope of a similar effect now, I am thinking of winter weather with snow and ice etc. You never know, it may not happen, but if it does….are you prepared? Its good to keep a list of emergency contacts close, e.g. friends and family, local tradesmen, electricity, oil and gas suppliers etc. Also a good idea to have a “kit” handy including some long life food, a torch, matches, candles. But most important is keeping warm. Make sure that you have easy access to blankets etc. If you are concerned about your safety in extreme weather conditions, call me for more information or to be part of the “Winters Journey” scheme. My number is 07557 922020 or email me at

We are looking forward to 2013 and a very exciting programme of events for the Flower Club. Wednesday 16 January we have a demonstration given by Marie Munday and the theme is ‘Going to the Movies’. There will also be a competition for club members of an ‘Arrangement with 5 Flower Heads’. Wednesday 20 February there will be a workshop tutored by a floral teacher, Marie Blackman for both beginners and the more experienced. Meetings are held at Crudwell Village Hall and doors open at 7pm for a 7.30pm start. Visitors very welcome. Telephone Sue on 01666 577125 for further information. Pamela Loftus, Committee Member.

WATER, WATER EVERYWHERE - Part 2! Flood Update at Old Byer, Crudwell

By Louise

I realise that Bob and I have already thanked our friends and neighbours in Crudwell for help during the flooding at the beginning of November. But we were flooded again on Wednesday 21 November. I would sincerely like to thank Nigel and Gill Kelly for their help, along with Bob, our neighbour, and our friends that fed us the following weekend. Best wishes to you all for a good (and dryer) 2013. Bob & Linda Perry

COFFEE ‘N’ CHAT

ANOTHER SCAM TO BE AWARE OF

What a lovely end to our Coffee ‘n’ Chat year we had in the Church on Wednesday, 12 December.

The Police have just informed us that a team of Eastern Europeans are targeting customers at Morrison's in Chippenham in a very slick operation the objective being to get your credit/debit card details then hey presto £2K out of your account.

It was a jolly cold morning but the friendship and laughter soon warmed us all up. The Christmas Sales table and usual sales table were full of donated and home-made goodies, and combined with the raffle and sales of coffee made a wonderful £139.84. Our next Coffee ‘n’ Chat will be at The Rectory in Days Court (by kind invitation of Barry and Avril Raven) on Monday, 14 January 2013. Let’s hope our lucky raffle winners will manage to win another prize in January. Now for our list of winners: Lynn White; Bobby Gibbs; Jean Pearce; Carmel Rogers; Jenny Ward; Tony Pain; Anita Smith; Kathleen Gifford; Eve White; Joy Everson-Goddard; Les Pearce; Shirley Lewis; John Wiggins; Joan Mundy; Phyl Collins and Paul Gifford.

If your suspect something, IMMEDIATELY inform Morrison's staff and insist they notify the police!

Emergency Planning Service Flooding Update 22 November 2012 As you have seen on news reports the poor weather has been causing some flooding issues throughout the county, predominantly in the north. With the forecast predicting further rain as well as strong gusts of winds tonight and over the weekend, and with the increased threat of groundwater flooding in chalk catchment areas, it is advisable to familiarise yourself with the council sandbag policy. Sandbags If your property is in imminent danger of flooding please telephone 0800 232323 or out of hours call 01722 413834 to request assistance. Please note sandbags will only be provided in response to emergency situations. You cannot collect sandbags from any of our depots. If you require sandbags as a precautionary measure you will need to make your own arrangements to purchase them from local suppliers. Wiltshire Council has in place an Emergency Management Plan and will respond to flooding events. We do not have a statutory duty to provide sandbags, but experience shows that the community expects the council to help if flooding is imminent. It is important that we handle enquiries sympathetically but in accordance with the following principles: · We will maintain a stock of sandbags at depots across Wiltshire with a minimum of 500 bags at each storage location. · We will supply sandbags free of charge on a “needs” basis in response to flooding emergencies. · We will not supply sandbags in advance based on forecasts. · If requests for supply or delivery are received during an emergency situation, we will consider them sympathetically on a case-by-case basis according to apparent vulnerability. · We will encourage property owners in known flood areas to adopt a “self help” approach and prepare in advance and respond to forecasts or flood warnings. We will encourage people making enquiries for · sandbags at these stages to look to local suppliers such as builders merchants where they can purchase them or possibly have them delivered. This will help to preserve our stocks for emergency response. · The Environment Agency promotes self-help schemes and we will refer people to their website. · Once issued to householders the disposal of contaminated sandbags following a flooding event will not be the responsibility of Wiltshire Council. Information can be provided on the most appropriate method of disposal but once issued the sandbags become the property of the occupier or organisation. Notes: 1. We have limited supplies of sandbags and these can disappear quite quickly if we supply too soon. 2. We try and time it right but flooding is notoriously difficult to predict with any degree of accuracy. 3. Builders Merchants / sandbag supplier details for the various areas - see Builders Merchants in yellow pages or carry out a search on the internet. 4.Visit National Flood Forum for helpful advice www.floodforum.org.uk and supplier information from www.blupages.org.uk 5.The Environment Agency website is www.environment-agency.gov.uk 6. Wiltshire Council Flooding Website www.wiltshire.gov.uk/communityandliving/civilemer gencies/floodinganddrainage.htm Community Resilience Parishes that hold Community Emergency Plans which may incorporate specific flood related information should ensure that these plans are current and up to date. Also remember that flood water holds hidden dangers such as lifted drain covers, pollution, trip hazards etc and that fast flowing water can easily lift a person off their feet.

CRUDWELL CE PRIMARY SCHOOL Children from Oak and Beech classes have participated in the Tag Rugby Festival at Minety as well as the football and netball festivals in Malmesbury. The girls were lucky to be offered some cricket coaching sessions; they were then able to participate in the ‘Chance to Shine’ indoor cricket competition at the Chippenham Dome. All the children in Beech also successfully passed their Bikeability training. To raise money for this year’s Children in Need, the School Council asked everyone to bring a £1 to come dressed back to front. They also had a house group competition to see which house could make the longest paper chain! They raised just over £115, fantastic! Their fundraising didn’t stop there; in December they raised £83 by encouraging everyone to wear a festive jumper for the day in aid of the Save the Children Fund. December was extremely busy. Mr Mead took the choir to the Young Voices event at the LG Arena in Birmingham, which was a fantastic experience for all involved there were 6300 children participating! The Friends of Crudwell School very kindly funded theatre trips – the older children went to Stratford Upon Avon to see ‘The Mouse and his Child’ whilst the infants went to the Wyvern to see ‘Aladdin’. FOCS organised a very successful Christmas Fair to raise money to refurbish our library area. The infants learnt lots of new songs for their Nativity play and performed to a packed audience! The term ended with our traditional Carol Service in the Church.

CRUDWELL LADIES LUNCHEON CLUB As per last year, all our Lady Lunchers will be busy sticking to their New Year Resolutions, like no more new shoes, handbags or crash diets, and these promises lasted the whole of first week of January. So it will be with some trepidation that we meet up again on Monday, 21st January 2013 to see how little weight we have put on over the Christmas festivities. It will be lovely to welcome you to our 12 year of lunching. Without you lovely ladies there wouldn’t be a Crudwell Ladies Lunch Club, so thank you all for your friendship and support over the past 11 years. It’s been great fun and without the magnificent patience of the Mayfield House Hotel staff, who have been such fun and so tolerant of our misdeeds, it wouldn’t have been at all successful.

So on to our 2013 programme, hopefully we have managed to get the mix of speakers and topics sorted for you, and you will all enjoy the very many subjects on offer. We start our New Year with a great guy called Michael Lunts, who does wonderful rendition of Noel Coward songs, and even dresses up in the evening dress. You are in for a treat on Monday, 21 January 2013, ladies. We say goodbye to a couple of our long serving members and welcome to 2 ladies who have been very patiently coming as guests for a couple of years. If you would like to join us, please give either PAT MANNING-577647 or MARGARET ENGLISH-577572 a call and we will be delighted to see you. We meet every third Monday (except Christmas and August) at the Mayfield House Hotel at 11.30am, and sit down to an excellent lunch at around 12.15pm, served by very patient and helpful staff.

We offer a comprehensive, professional service covering Design, Planning, Building Regulations, and if you wish - Full Construction.

Equally unusual - everything we design is in 3D on our computer systems, so that you can see exactly how your project will look, as with the computer images shown here.

Most Architectural practices aim for the large, glamorous projects, we however, specialise in bringing considered design to domestic houses, extensions and refurbishments.

We do things a little differently

It is with regret that the Crudwell Parish Council have to announce that Tony and Wala Thresher have resigned. We are therefore asking for volunteers within the community willing to work together to continue with this very important communication medium. This is a demanding but worthwhile task with significant importance to our community. We envisage a team of up to four members will be needed to share the total work load. Please contact any of the Parish Councillors or the Parish Clerk if you are able to take up this challenge. Content and contact for future editions: can be transmitted to any of the Parish Councillors pending revised contact details in next edition. Contact details are published on Page 2.
