Taylorsville Bennion Heritage REMEMBRANCES

With summer in full swing, we at the Taylorsville-Bennion Heritage
Center thought it might be the right time to advertise that we have school yearbooks available for your perusal. We have a limited number of yearbooks (whatever has been donated) from schools across the Salt
Lake Valley. Come to the museum and take a look! Summer allows folks more time to devote to searching out local ancestors so we are featuring a few of the yearbooks that we have to help you in your search. Yearbooks can be a fantastic, rich resource for learning about the lives of your ancestors — especially when it comes to learning about their childhood and adolescence. But that’s not their only benefit. Often, ads are included in the yearbooks and from them, you can glean information about old family businesses. You can also gather information about school administrators, faculty and staff who are generally listed yearbooks. You can get to know more about the students, too. Besides student portraits, many yearbooks list the awards a student achieved. It’s fun to see what school events were popular, including dances, school trips, spirit week and spelling bees. They are all usually listed, along with photos. Lists, lists, lists!
Yearbooks are filled with valuable lists of students, their areas of academic interest, their clubs/sport teams, and there often are lists of even custodians and lunch workers who worked at the school. You can get to know a lot about a community and the time period from yearbooks. An important postscript, too: Most yearbooks are not copyrighted. Visit the museum to see the yearbooks we’ve collected and much TaylorsvilleJournal.Com more. We’re located at 1488 W. 4800 South.
